Dessert recipe? I had one recently that was really easy and quite wonderful: Local ricotta made from goat cheese mixed with really ripe strawberry quarters, a drizzle of honey and a sprinkling of crushed fennel seed on top. I'm sure it would work with blueberries, blackberries or raspberries, too. And if you didn't like the licorice flavor of the fennel, cinnamon would work.

Good morning, all! I have no idea what's going on in my subconscious, but I've been having colorful dreams every night. I remember bits of three from last night: George Balanchine's ballet DON QUIXOTE and my inability to sing "Home on the Range" (I couldn't remember the last lin about cloudy skies), a police murder investigation and concealed evidence, and a summer/regional/community theatre production, a car, and a philandering husband.

The laundry is in the washers, and I will tidy a bit before I get down to work on the Appalachian piece. At Toyland yesterday, I determined the keys for two numbers, "Beautiful Star of Bethlehem" and "Christmas Time's A-Comin," and transcribed "Good Ol' Mountain Dew" from a recording. I have until my meeting on Saturday at noon to copy out leadsheets for these three with a few vocal harmonies and finish up a clean copy of "West Virginia Mine Disaster."

That's my next couple of days.

DR Jose, I too liked THE HANGOVER, although it took me about 30 minutes to get into it and find it funny. I remember that I took Charlotte to see it and I kept thinking, this is funny? Once I relaxed and went with it, I laughed myself silly.

I don't have no stinking recipes.

I have to take my brand spanking new suit to the cleaners to have it pressed for the anniversary luncheon and open house one week from Saturday.

And I have to decide what to wear for tomorrow when we meet the Mayor for her proclamation for Putnam County Playhouse, and be photographed for the newspaper!

We invited all past presidents to join us....so I am not sure how many people we will have, but shall see in about 24 hours.

I love the new CAMELOT recording and can't recommend it enough.

I've always liked that recording, and I never thought I'd wind up with a fantastic CD reissue. EMI London was pretty lousy about reissuing their show recordings, but we have it now, thanks to BK.  I have a copy of the London production, which reflects all of the changes made for London, like the new overture with chorus, and the new dance music. I'm still sorry no one's recorded "The Persuasion."

DR JRand60, did you know I have a complete performance CD of the 1960 Broadway production?

TOD:

I don't have any dessert recipes handy, but I do have tips on making Rice-Krispie treats:  Do not cook the marshmellows in the microwave.  This will cause your treats to be too dense.  Cook them in a pan on the stovetop.  For a tasty variation, stir in a bag of Nestles morsels to the mixture after you remove it from the heat.

Well, we've had some excitement here. On my way to the laibdromat, about 30 minutes ago, I could hear in my hallway an alarm going off with a high-pitched series of beeps. I couldn't tell if it was a smoke detector, carbon monoxide alarm, or an alarm clock, or which apartment it was coming from, but it sounded to be on my floor. I rang all three apartments at the end of the hall where the sound was loudest and no one responded. I got my laundry, came back and arang the super's bell; no response. When I got up to the third floor, the alarm was still going off, so I rang all three apartments again; no response. I called 911 and gave the operator all the information and, since I was dubious about what it could be, she directed me to a fire station and I explained everything again. Five minutes later a fire truck, five or six firemen showed up, and of course the alarm had stopped. They checked out the building and left. They were all very pleasant.

In August 1971, in Oxford, OH, the building next to my apartment caught fire and burned to the ground, killing a fireman when the building collapsed. My building was closed for structural examination so I had no apartment for nearly a month and had to drive to and from my parents' home to Oxford every day. In August 1973. my brother Randy, then a 16 year-old pothead and general screwup, coming and going from the house around midnight, left something burning in his room - I always suspected a joint although the report blames it on too many outlets heated up - and around 4 am, his room went up in flames and my room suffered extreme water damage from the firemen going through my room to his. I do not want to live through a third fire, so I get jumpy whenever something's suspect.

DR MBarnum, I believe you should stop cruising retired sword & sandal bodybuilder/actors and concentrate on retired firemen: no egos and they're in great shape.

I really don't wish the NYC Gay Men's Chorus any ill will, but their complete ineptitude really drives me mad.  Two years ago, during the whole "Appalachian Carols" mess, to keep peace, I ordered a set of band parts from my publisher, paid for them and gave them to the Chorus to use for the December concert in 2009. I called the Music Director yesterday to see if I could use the parts for next week's workshop, and he has no idea where they may be! The Chorus no longer appears to have an archive of orchestra parts from their concerts. What total ineptitude is this?

DR JMK - You can just tweet at them - or @ them - via the main page. -They need to be Following you in order to receive a Direct Message - DM - from you. So...

Just start off by asking them if they have reports of a problem in your area. In the "Tweet" box, just start off with "@TalkToQwest" then the rest of your query - in 140 characters or less. -Continue it in another tweet if needed. Then wait and watch for a response from them. They will usually say, "Please DM us with your name and account number."

To send a DM to them: Click on "Messages" along the top. Click on "New Message". A pop-up box will appear. Type in "TalkToQwest" in the "To" box, then your message - again in 140 characters or less.

*I also noticed that they list an email address and 800 number in their "bio".

Nope. Those came out a few years ago as a "Limited Edition", but they seem to come back from time to time. There are even mini-ones in White Chocolate.

And usually they'll be chummy with the older folks if you're nice to them, also.  A lot of teens first reaction to older people is negative.  It will build cast camaraderie.

The Chorus has been run by several idiots in the past 13 years since they sacked me. The one who left two years ago threw out the entire library, saving one copy (often an incomplete copy) of each number on the grounds they were paying too much to store 200 copies of each song they've ever sung. When I was sacked in 1998, I asked for the return of all orchestrations and orchestra parts for my charts and they are now either with my publisher or my collection at the Library of Congress. The original Chorus Music Director, Gary Miller, returned all od my original scores with his markings to me last year and thy're all at the Miami University Library. God knows wher everything  else is now. The idiocy of the organization is amazing.

I'm hoping my check arrives today. I am low on money. I'm also due for a royalty check from my publisher. I hope I had good sales last year.

I'm off to my meeting and some errands - bye for now!

DR Ginny, I keep forgetting to ask if Rob and Mary Linda are registered with any merchant? I've misplaced the invitation so I can't RSVP, but you do realize that my schedule will prohibit my getting to the wedding?

DR Elmore - the mailing you've misplaced was just a "save the date" card.  Invitations have not gone out yet.  And, yes, I fully understand that you, along with many of the people we asked them to invite, will not be able to attend due to distance, schedules, etc.

Laura, there's a lot of film cans - not quite sure how many, though.

Rent her a large U-Haul.

"What do you think, Ethel?  With a trailer this big, we can stop by your father's house in Albuquerque and pick up that Holstein furniture set he wants to give you."

"Oh, I don't know, Lucy.  There's an awful lot of moutain roads between here and Albuquerque.  And besides, have you ever driven anything this big?"

"Oh, how hard could it be?  Come on. let's go pick up those film cans..."

Well it better work or Ricky and Fred will be planting their footprints someplace, and it won't be Graumann's Chinese.

What is a white chocolate reese peanut butter cup? Never heard of this. Is it new?

Nope. Those came out a few years ago as a "Limited Edition", but they seem to come back from time to time. There are even mini-ones in White Chocolate.

-It's just a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup with a white chocolate shell instead of a milk chocolate shell. My favorite are the Dark Chocolate ones.

Here's a picture of the Limited Edition version:

UPDATE: The guy worked a miracle and the stuff will be picked up by six and to me on Monday.

You know the drill - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping (23.73) via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.  Or just wait till morning and order through the site.  This is seriously gorgeous, stunning music from Pino Donaggio.

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack:

THE BERLIN AFFAIR
Music Composed by Pino Donaggio

In 1974, director Liliana Cavani made the extremely controversial film The Night Porter, which divided critics and audiences all over the world.  A decade later, she was back with The Berlin Affair (based on the novel The Buddhist Cross by Junichiro Tanazaki), which, while not as controversial as The Night Porter, still explored hotbed topics of sexuality and homosexuality, race, jealousy, torment, deception, betrayal, all set in 1938 Berlin and involving a Nazi official, his wife, the daughter of the Japanese Ambassador, an art teacher, all of whose lives intertwine in ultimately destructive ways.  The cast was excellent, with German actress Gudrun Landgrebe elegant and beautiful as Louise, Kevin McNally as her husband, and alluring Mio Takaki as the object of many people’s desires.  The film was beautifully photographed by Dante Spinotti, who would go on to photograph Manhunter, Crimes Of The Heart, The Last Of The Mohicans, LA Confidential, and many others.   Capturing the seething passions, eroticism, intrigue, and atmosphere, Pino Donaggio’s score is as much a leading player in the film as any of its characters.

Donaggio had been scoring films for over a decade, starting with Nicholas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now (1973), and continuing with his work for Brian De Palma (Carrie, Dressed To Kill, Body Double, Blow Out and others) as well as cult classics like Tourist Trap, The Howling, Piranha, Tex, Hercules, as well as providing quite a few scores for Cannon Films, of which The Berlin Affair was one.  The score for The Berlin Affair is Donaggio at the top of his game.  With its sinuous, swirling, hypnotic melodies capturing all the underlying complexities of the characters and the story, the music is like a symphonic fever dream in the film, and a wonderful and completely satisfying listening experience away from the film.  In fact, the music is mixed quite low in the film, and many cues are truncated, so it’s especially lovely to hear them complete and in gorgeous sound.  The themes are some of the most beautiful Donaggio has ever written.

The Berlin Affair was issued on LP, but this is its world premiere CD release.  The LP presented forty-two minutes of music, including a title song (inspired by but not used in the film), and several source/pastiche cues.  We present all those, plus all the cues not used on the album, and they are many.    The CD was mastered from the original Italian two-track mixed score tapes housed in the MGM vaults – they were in pristine condition and the recording is absolutely stunning.  The CD runs just about an hour and contains about eighteen minutes of never before released score cues.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price of the CD is $19.98, plus shipping.   Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the first week of July – however, never fear, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

JRand - your newspaper spread is very nice !  It must be very gratifying that the town is so appreciative of your theatre group!

Elmore Iam very glad that you did not have a fire in your building.

Kudos for getting involved - most people would have just ignored it

Do you know what we had here today?? ?? ??  We had haze. The day after wind and rain.

They said it came FROM CANADA. Yes, from wildfires in Canada.

Watching a motion picture on DVD and still trying to work everything out in terms of the pick-up, but it's now clear that the trucking thing is not going to work and I only can hope they'll be honorable and refund my money.

I still feel so crappy. But my sore throat has now turned into a very runny nose and a cough. So maybe this is progressing? Not sure.

But I feel so bad. This is the worst illness i've had in so long. First the fever. Then the sore throat. And now the constantly running nose and cough.  Yuck!

DR Jennifer - Sounds like you should go see a doctor.

Now no more cough or sore throat just a runny nose and head cold. I feel like it's running its course. Doctors here do not like to give antibiotics. And even though i feel like crap i don't know that i need them.

Everyone in my family has been really sick. So it's going around. :(

As long as your throat is better & your chest is clear you are more likely to catch something else if you go to the doctor.

I tried to take a sudafed tonight. I don't normally take them because they usually don't agree with me. Usually i get very tired even if it says non-drowsy.

No far it has not put me in a coma. My nose stopped running a bit. But it has made my throat very dry (i know this happens).

I really do not feel well. I'll see how i feel tomorrow to decide if i go to the doctor. My head is very congested. So i might have a sinus infection.

Back from the flash mob rehearsal.  I bit too stagey for my taste, would like to have had it begin a little more organically, but the choreographer isn't Catholic so he couldn't understand how we really wanted it to start.  Oh well, it's beginning to sound great.
