Title: FABULOUS FRIDAY
Post by: bk on May 21, 2011, 02:40:08 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were not all that fabulous and were certainly not written on a Friday, and now it is time for you to post until the Fabulous Cows come home.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I'm guessing my first slice of pizza either came from Pizza Hut or Shakey's. Although, there's also a chance it could have come from a box in my parents' freezer. Wherever it came from, it most likely just plain cheese, or at the very most pepperoni. And I guess I liked it. And I still do.

A pepperoni made with real pepperoni is still my go-to. -I especially like it when the pepperoni is cooked till it's crisp on the edges, maybe even a little burnt.

As for the exotic toppings: I do like some of the California Pizza Kitchen and CPK-inspired combos: BBQ Chicken, Thai Chicken, etc.

The "exotic" topping I still don't get is broccoli. I actually like broccoli, but it's just doesn't work as a pizza topping. If I want something green on my pizza, I'll go for spinach, or arugula that's been placed on top of the hot pizza right after it's come out of the oven.

And as for my Trip To The Library...

In short, I had a blast.

In "long"...

The only preparation I did for this "game" was to read the rules and guidelines - which were very basic and simple. I also signed up on "The First 500" Facebook group which became a sort of clearinghouse of questions and answers, as well as a way for some people to e-meet others before last night.

Once we all checked in, we gathered in Astor Hall for some introductions, and then we all headed upstairs to the beautiful main Reading Room. Then once we were there, we were divided into two groups: Patience and Fortitude. ;) Then it was up to us to "find" and organize ourselves into smaller teams, squads. -I actually ended up meeting a writer from the New York Times, Jenny8Lee, and she was there with two friends, and we ran into another friend of theirs as were getting things organized at our table.

The way the game worked involved using an app on your iPhone or Android to scan QR codes that were placed on or around various artifacts in the Library. Once you scanned the code, you would unlock some information about the code, as well as a "mission" of sorts. Each artifact was used as a springboard for some sort of creative project. You were provided some ideas, and then you either wrote some sort of prose, or you could even draw a picture to reflect the theme of that artifact. The squads did not have to find and scan every since QR code, nor did they have to complete every "mission". However, it was up to "The First 500" to keep track via various bulletin boards which artifacts had been found and which missions had been completed. This made it possible for every artifact to be found and each mission to be completed via a crowd-sourcing of sorts.

Some teams started off by dividing up and getting all the QR codes scans. Others had people who wanted to do less physical leg work, and stayed at the desks at their computer waiting for the team members to find an artifact, and then start working on one of the missions. Basically, even though it was a "game", and there was some competition involved, it was truly about collaboration.

My team sort of did a bit of each. We all started off together finding the first couple of artifacts just so we could see how everything was set up. Then two of them went back up to the reading room and started working on some of the writing assignments, while the rest of us - myself included - kept exploring the library.

Along the way we came across postcards from "the future" for other participants, and then we had to go and find those participants and deliver their postcard to them personally. In other words, it was a cool way to meet other people.

The game started a little before 9:00pm, and the last call for stories was at 4:30am. At 5:00am, we all reassembled for a closing ceremony of sorts, and, most importantly, to sign the copy of the Book we had all just spent the past couple of hours writing together. And the Book was actually being printed and bound throughout the night. Alas, it was not completed by the time we left, but it should be on display by early next week. And each of us who attended tonight and contributed to the book will now be listed as an Author in the catalog of The New York Public Library. :)

Otherwise...

For a game that depended so much on technology, the whole event ran rather smoothly. There were some problems early on with one of the computer servers, but there were no major crashes - none at all, actually - and the few glitches that did pop up were relatively minor. I also appreciated how the game was geared toward all levels of players, all levels of commitment.

There were some truly gung-ho and high-strung people. One guy even came dressed as a Ghostbuster. Others just chose to take care of things at a leisurely pace to fully take advantage of being in the NYPL during the overnight hours, and having access to places that the public doesn't normally get to see. I kind of shifted between modes throughout the course of the evening-into-morning.

One of the artifacts that totally blew me away was Tony Straiges set model for Sunday in the Park with George. It's set up in the library's Centennial Exhibition. It wasn't part of any of the missions, but I did end up spending a few extra minutes looking at it and into it. Beautiful.

So....

The online game should soon be opening to the public worldwide, and it's set up so that you can either come to the NYPL and use a smartphone app, or you can explore the museum via your computer at home. Or school.  In fact, I think some of the missions would make great creative writing assignments for students of all ages.

If you have an iPhone of Android phone (sorry, no Blackberry app), just go to your app store and search for "Find the Future".

If you just want to play the web-based game, just go to http://findthefuture.nypl.org -Sign up for an account and start playing.

And now...

Well, I'm actually feeling pretty good. The sun is coming up, so that's helping to sway any drowsiness. I'm also tempted to head out for a good hot breakfast somewhere. Maybe Chinatown. We shall see.

*Oh, they had some great food for us at the NYPL. Besides a never-ending supply of coffee, tea, Vitamin Water, sodas and Red Bull, they also had various snack and sandwiches from Whole Foods and local restaurants and bakeries. There were even some mini-ham and egg biscuits brought out at 4:00am. That was some good knoshing.

And Chris Lowell, who played "Dell" on "Private Practice", was also one of the participants. We were both in the Patience, and ended up sitting at neighboring table. As the event wined down, we ended up chatting a while. A very nice guy. *There's a pic of him on my Facebook page as well as in my Twitter stream.

Good morning, all! I'll be off to Toyland very shortly. I could accomplish my work here, but since I'm having a meeting at 1pm at 26th and Sixth and Toyland is at 27th, and close to Sixth, it seems silly not to accomplish what I need to do there.

Well, last night's dreams were weird and I remember moments of two of them: my lovely soprano friend Sara Jen Ford was recording NAUGHTY MARIETTA and she was married to this bounder-conductor that DR Ginny and I once knew who went through life and several marriages with an open fly. He's probably still paying child support to someone.  In the second dream I was in a very swank hotel and trying to return a credit card to one of the Real Housewives of Atlanta and retrieve mine!

I heard from Ron Raines. His opening night gift arrived and tonight's the night. I've heard much I cannot report but I wish Ron, Danny Burstein, and Christian Delcroix who's playing young Danny Burstein a big success.

OOOOOHHHHHHH!!!!!!

So, I check my Facebook messages sometime after things got started, and I noticed a messaged from a young woman that I met at a friend's New Year's Eve party about two years ago. We had discussed various shows at the time, and I had given her my card since I had some material she had been trying to track down. Well, she had lost track of my card, and as time went by, well...

It turns out, she's a major bibliophile, and had actually entered to be a part of "The First 500", but even though her "First Quest" garnered a lot of votes online, she was not ultimately selected to be a part of tonight's event. However, she kept following the tweets as well as the various updates on Facebook. -And one of those updates happened to be my interview! "Hi... Do you remember me? I just saw your video, and..."

What a coincidink!?!??! :)

I'm listening to one of those Broadway compilations from TER; John Yap tends to reuse tracks of my orchestrations for multiple singers, and I think I've got some songs I've scored with three or four different voices. He does a lot of "special event"overdubs for various concert people, and I'm listening to "Make Believe" with a good baritone and the wooliest soprano I've heard in some time. She's got the notes, but an awful tone.

Well DR Jose will be glad to know that i am on the way to the doctor now. My mom was nice enough to go and get me a number at the clinic.

I called 811 this morning. I don't know why i didn't think of this before. They have nurses that help you (you explain your problem to them). I got a very nice nurse. She said there is a decent chance that they will say it is viral (which is what they usually say). But that it would be better to just know for sure.

And since i was up for 3 hours in the night with a sore throat (yep that again). I am going to go.

Really the only reason i did not go till now is that i was sure it was viral and hate having to spend half the day at the doctors when they won't give you any meds.

TOD: I think Pizza Hut was my first pizza, but Mom's was always my favorite as a kid. She did a think crust and cooked it until it crackled. I think she used ketchup and herbs for the sauce, but the sausage and cheese were always good.

Best pizza ever was in Venice. Again, a thin crust and a few toppings, including pepperoni, artichoke hearts and olives. Very little cheese. That was 15 years ago and I remember it like yesterday.

Best chichi pizza. I don't know if any of you watch "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives," but the show has been running an episode filmed at a local place called Dough (the owner is Doug Horn). Anyway, he does a four-cheese pizza that's killer by itself, but for a little extra in season, the waiter will shave fresh black truffle slices on top, if you want. Yup.

Favorite toppings: anchovies, garlic, black olives, artichoke hearts, sausage, pepperoni.

I'll have to take a told you so from DR Jose.

Just got back from the doctor. Turns out i have a very bad throat infection.

He wondered why i hadn't gone to see him sooner.

Truthfully every time i've had a sore throat the doctor has always been hesitant to give me meds wondering if it could be strep throat.

The weird thing is that even though my throat had been hurting on monday and i lost my voice on tuesday. My throat had stopped hurting on wed. But it started hurting again last night.

Hopefully now these antibiotics will work. I already started to get a bit of my energy back before i went to the doctors.

It is such a nice day. And i want to ride my bike so bad. It's been 2 weeks. :(

DR Jennifer, thank you for the suggestion of that funny looking back stretching thingy....I am gonna get me one and see if it helps!

If you do get one I can point you to online videos showing how to use it. And there are special tips (like what level to put it on and how to get on and off it).

I used to have the worst lower back problems. And now if my back starts to hurt even the slightest i do the back magic right away. It's amazing.

I love pizza. But don't like pepperoni anymore.

I love bacon and pineapple. That is my favorite. Although usually here they make them ham and pineapple.

I also like chicken pizza.

Congrats on the success last night, Jose!

Topic of the Day:  I just had my favorite pizza a couple of weeks ago for my birthday:  pepperoni, pineapple, cashews, extra cheese and extra sauce from Dirty Dave's in Lacey, Washington.

I don't know when/what my first pizza was...it might've been one that my mom made from a box where you make the crust from the packet and they have a can of sauce and a packet of parmesan cheese.  I actually used to like that a lot, as simple as it was.

Today, I need to go to work for a couple of hours, then I'm ushering for matinee performance of a ballet version of Peter Pan (http://wcpa.squarespace.com/upcoming-events/2011/5/20/studio-west-dance-theatre-presents-peter-pan.html)!

Studio West Dance Theatre is proud to announce the Olympia Premier of the Ballet Peter Pan! Celebrate the 100 Year Anniversary of this magical novel and the fantastical adventure it reveals. All sets and costumes are provided by the Eugene Ballet and are spectacular! The company, Flying with Foy, will be working with us and the dancers will become airborne! The title role of Peter Pan will be performed by professional dancer Avram Gold from the Minnesota Ballet.

I've never heard of Studio West Dance Theatre, so I don't know if they're local.  It should be interesting, though!

Nowadays, I limit my pizza-eating to veggie only.  Green peppers, mushrooms, etc.  When I want meat, I use grilled chicken.  On very rare occasions we'll get a Hawaiian from Donato's - ham, pineapple, sliced almonds, with green peppers added.  Last night I made pizzas for our dinner and put pepperoni on the portions that Richard and Rob ate and green peppers ONLY on mine.

Or very old pepperoni!

Half a day to see a doctor when you are sick.  i hope the 811 clinic is faster.  Good news vibes!

DR Jose - thank you for the details on last night's event at NYPL.  Sounds like it took a lot of planning.  Was there a fundraising element or did it seem to be more of a friendraising deal?

There was no fundraising involved. It's part of the NYPL's Centennial Weekend celebrations. -I missed the free ice cream earlier today. Most of the artifacts are currently on display in a special "100 Years" exhibition. They've pulled a lot of items from their collection that have never been on public display before. And with the accompanying book, I'm guessing they'll be using it as an educational tool - and they may raise some additional revenue that way. Otherwise, it was a great way to get 500 people - basically strangers - together under one roof for one night to write a new book for their collection.

Yes, Laura, after the trucking debacle, was kind enough to go pick up all the Nudie stuff - I just wanted it before the guy changed his mind.  It's been a complicated ride, this, but it all worked out fantastically.  Back in the lawsuit days when I was being manipulated by wealthy, awful people in a lawsuit they could not win (and didn't) I was offered five prints of Nudie Musical along with the film's internegative (from which all prints were made) and separate soundtrack.  The guy wanted 5K for the lot.  I was busy giving all my money to the lawyer for no reason so I could not do the deal.  Instead, the co-director of the film bought it and that's where it's been.  Last year, we spoke and he said he wanted to get rid of it and I could have it for the 5K.  I immediately contacted Image Entertainment, who put out the DVD and who have made close to a quarter of a million bucks on it, about doing the blu-ray and getting them to pick up the cost of the stuff.  They told me it was "too soon" - soon thereafter, of course, they began issuing very low-selling blu-ray titles that few are interested in - had they not been so stupid, Nudie would have done them well.  So, I just let it sit because the thought of shelling out 5K was not so hot.

Flash forward to three weeks ago when he called and said he was moving and that he needed to get the stuff out of his storage facility and that he had a new deal for me - free.  And since then I've been trying to make those arrangements because he's so weird sometimes I was petrified he'd change his mind about the free part.  So, Laura went over there and got it, and soon it shall be mine, and I see no reason why I should now hand this to Image since they were so jerky about it - I think this will be a Kritzerland release.  I just see no upside to Image - there are no stores anymore and I can get it everywhere online.

Half a day to see a doctor when you are sick.  i hope the 811 clinic is faster.  Good news vibes!

The 811 isn't a clinic. It's just a nurse that you call and talk to on the phone.

And the half a day part is that usually at my regular doctor it takes so long to get an appointment. And the line is always busy. So you can have to go there just to try to get an appointment. Then you have to go back and wait. So it ends up taking hours and hours.

This new clinic i went to was really fast. I'm still not sure what their exact policy is. There is a certain time they give out tickets to be seen.

But i went at 9am got registered. And she told me to come back at 10:30am. So I went back and got seen within 10 minutes.

My mom and sister were shocked when i told him the guy was writing a prescription as soon as he looked at my throat They have been both extremely sick and the doctors never want to prescribe.

I was shocked that it was a throat infection and not sinus infection since my throat had stopped hurting. Oh well at least hopefully now i will feel better. But the pills seems to cause extreme drowsiness.

The most amazing puppet show! There's some French spoken at the end, but it's pretty obvious what's going on; those who don't speak it, won't miss much.

i can't remember the first pizza i had.  there was a place on pico blvd we went to sometimes.  i don't recall it was great, just enjoyable.

the best pizza ever was the four cheese pizza in Pisa, Italy while dining outside with a view of the tower.  After lunch we had one of the best gelate's of our trip, a carmel swirl-yum!

i enjoy french pizza very much since having it in Paris.

eat binding foods like a plain baled potato or basmati.  when you are done take acidophilus & bifidus if you don't already.  it not only helps the digestive system but fights east infections caused by antibiotics.

It's funny - I made a little comment about the Cy Coleman revue in NY on the Broadway World board - some folks were being a little critical that it's literally one song after another with not one word of patter or any historical context.  I chimed in that I was and am always surprised when something isn't that well received that no work is done on it.   A poster immediately challenged me to post ONE negative review from a major critic, because, according to the poster, the show received unanimous raves, from the LA Times on down.

First off, the poster doing the challenging joined the board - today.  Second off - their posting name - can'thumthetunes.  Third off, don't challenge if you're going to be disingenuous and bend the truth - because a simple Google search led me to the LA Times review which was hardly a rave - it was a decent review, lukewarm, and one of his main problems was the lack of patter and historical context.  And since I've heard that from every person I've talked to who's seen the show, well, if enough people say the same exact thing it's worth looking at, at least.  I don't think anyone's asking for endless chatter, but a few set-ups would probably do wonders.  I printed the review, welcomed the poster to the board, and asked whether it was David Zippel or Billy Stritch - certainly it's someone involved in the show from its inception.  But his followup post would have led you to believe it was some disinterested party - but no, I'm afraid not.  I'm afraid whoever it is (and I suspect it's either Zippel or Stritch) gave themselves away by somehow knowing about every review the show received.

I made one additional post, a very nice one, and wished them well.  These people should stay off these boards.

We are back from a delightful time at the movie and dinner at Bravo, one of our favorite restaurants.  It's prom night in that area and there were a lot of dressed up high school kids eating there and at the other 2 establishments in the complex.  We had our choice of being seated immediately outside or waiting 30 minutes to eat inside.  The evening was beautiful, so we sat outside under an umbrella.  After dinner we walked down to Barnes & Noble for a belated 6th birthday present for our friend Alivya.

i've been talking to craig who returned from a 7 hour hike.  i admit i was somewhat relieved when he returned home as my hiking group does the same hike in about 2 hours & we don't go fast.  he started farther down the road than we do & went in circles on the hike as the snow covered the trails, which are poorly marked to begin with.  he had a great time but is glad he didn't need to spend the night up there.  i told him i was sure i could have found some one to tell him where to find the trail.

I took a rest (much needed rest - I may add) and noticed smoke billowing past my window.  I thought "What the..." and heard a fire truck  So I ventured out and when I looked down the hill I saw smoke and flames, so I walked around and down the hill and watched the firemen put water on a camper that somehow had burst into flames when the owners tried to start it for the first time this year.  A lady who had clearly stopped mowing the yard mid-mow, said she saw the flames and the explosion as the propane tank or whatever was on board exploded.  Quite the excitement

I read some reports of people giving away their "worldly possessions"...

The preacher who started this campaign(?) was actually in Times Square earlier - and I happened to be there at 6:00. When the clock struck 6:00, a couple of cheers sounded, and then... Nothing. The preacher spoke to people and the press which was gathered in Times Square. He basically said, "I was wrong."

Today, I ushered for a ballet version of "Peter Pan," and it was quite good.  It guess it was a local ballet school that brought in the production and their local students danced most of the chorus parts.  I think that Peter (very attractive and quite athletic ;)), Mr. Darling, Captain Hook, Nana and three of the pirates were the only men.  All the rest were played by girls and a couple of women.  I didn't notice any students who were boys.  The set (all drops and a few rolled on pieces) were really nice.  There were about 350 people in the audience and they loved it.

Last night, I worked concessions for Kathy Najimy and the Seattle Women's Chorus.  It was a great show.  The chorus was pretty good and a lot of fun.  Kathy Najimy was very funny...not a great singer but she certainly performed with great exuberance. :D

This evening Wae-Ling came over and we cooked a zucchini and yellow squash that she picked. I was surprised when she ate some.

and then I wrote:

Quote
I brought a program from [a local production of] "Parallel Lives" (co-written by Kathy Najimy) that I saw the night before and the booklet for the London cast recording of Sister Act to see if I could have them sent backstage for her autograph.  I didn't get to meet her (nor did I expect to) and I also didn't get her autograph.  She didn't sign any and she didn't come out to the lobby after the show.  Our house manager did ask Kathy's manager and he said that if they take my stuff with them, she'll sign them later and send them back to me.  I thought...why not?  So, unless something goes horribly wrong, I'll eventually get my stuff back with Kathy's autograph.

It took three, count 'em THREE months, but my "Parallel Lives" program and CD booklet were sent back and were waiting for me at the theater! ;D

That's fantastic, BK!  Can't wait to see the finished product!

Exciting news about the Nudie material.  Alas, some of us haven't converted to blue and ray yet and don't see it happening anytime soon.

I bought several Blu-ray discs before I got a player...and back in the late 1980s, I started buying CDs about four years before I ever got a player.  I knew that I eventually would, and I did.

I'm not going to pass up this purchase. :D
