After work yesterday, since it FINALLY stopped raining, I went out in the back yard and tackled all the weeds that have been thriving in this rainy weather -- I filled three large "contractor" trash bags and had to stop as it became too dark to see ( and I still have two flower beds and one 100 foot length of fencing to complete
They I came in and cooked dinner , cleaned up and started catching up here around 11 -
I was so tired I started dozing off again while reading - I have just woken up with a terible lower back ache
hopefully the Aleve liquid gel tab I just took will help

Good morning, all! Frst of all, thank you for the vbes for my frind Craig. I think we met on a Miami U Theatre production of LOOK HOMEWARD, ANGEL, one of my favorite plays. Craig was a freshman, cast in the role of the son who's been in the navy and comes back at the end of Act Two because his brother Ben is dying. I was the graduate assistant to the costume shop, and my first memory of Craig is dyeing his hair red since all of the Gant children had red hair. Somehow, we bonded over that experience, which was a first for both of us, and Craig and I were best friends after that. He was from Rock Island, and on free weekends, he would hitchike back to Illinois to see his girlfriend who was still in high school. On the weekends he didn't go back home, he and I would stay up all night Friday and Saturday nights watching dreadful horror films and getting drunk with the other theatre students. By the time he graduated, he was no longer a theatre major, but thinking about medical school. The last summer I lived in Oxford, OH, he was engaged to a wonderful girl, Sue Jones, in the Speech/Thestre Dept. I moved away, he went to medical school, and when I moved to NYC in 1979, he was heading the Pediatrics Dept of a hospital in Fargo, ND. He and his family now live in Dallas, Texas.
And before I forget, Vibes to DR MichaelS' s family!

So, this morning, first thing, I have to run to Kinko's and photocopy these two charts I quickly wrote yesterday. I hope they read down easily today.
DR Jose, I wish everyone of my friends a huge success with FOLLIES. I am elated for every good review they get and bummed at the negative comments because I know more about the rehearsal process on this show than I can say, but nothing's changed my opinion of the director's lack of talent. I don't want to see this production for two major reasons: the original was perfection, and I think that's what alienated so many folk. It was frightening, it was sad, it was haunting in so many ways, it had charm and sophistication, and it was brilliant and brilliantly cast. Every production since then has compromises: Susan Shulman's Pittsburgh CLO production, which was the first time I had thoughts about ever seeing FOLLIES again, had a good Sally and Ben and a lousy Phyllis and Buddy. There were great second-stringers in all the other parts. The Philharmonic concert version was the nail in the coffin for me: a happy ending, concert endings for the Rain on the Roof-Ah Paris-Broadway Baby Montage instead of the counterpoint chaos, an over-indulgent and over-indilged Many Patinkin, all wrong.
The second reason I don't want to see this production is that I still believe Bernadette Peters should be playing Phyllis. These idiot Sondheads wrongly think she's automatically a signed deal for a lead in every Sondheim show and she isn't. She's as right for Sally as I am, and no one will ever replace Dorothy Collins' mix of sweet "girl next door," chip-on-the-shoulder anger, and delusion. That character is the most closely realized stage picture of my sad mother in any show I can think of, and Bernadette Peters, for me, has none of that. I find the comment that Kevin H posted about some actors not auditioning very illuminating because they were offered roles and my first thought was, who gives a woman who can't dance "Lucy and Jessie"? Bernadette plays anger and bitch well, as she proved in the film IMPROMPTU and in a lot of Act One of SUNDAY IN THE PARK.
As to my mother, she was a mess: pathetic, lost in dreams of what never happened, angry at growing up poor in a depression that shortchanged her ambitions, hating people with money who fulfilled a lot of theirs, caught up in tv soap operas and reading pulp romantic novels, jealous, manipulative, unhappily married and feeling trapped, offering conditional love only when she came out of her long trances. I always thought she would kill herself long before she did it with cigarettes and fried food. Dorothy Collins was all of that and more; she is is irreplaceable.
End of soapbox.

I agree with DR Elmore that Bernadette Peters is miscast as Sally. It's not that I don't believe that she could act the role or sing the hell out of it--it's just that she is not a Sally. But I'm not sure I see her as a Phyllis, either.
I think Shirley Jones would have been a terrific Sally at one time or another.

1) What is happening with the Blu Rays of The First Nudie Musical and The Creature Wasn't Nice?
2) What's happening with the stage version of The First Nudie Musical?
If you've been reading the notes you know that I may finally have a decent element to work from for Nudie and that will be on its way to me soon. So, that one's coming. The Creature Wasn't Nice was originally going to be a DVD release - the elements I have are not good enough for blu-ray and so the hunt is on for a 35mm print, since mine is now lost.
Stage Nudie is on hold until we find someplace to actually do it. I am, at this point in time, bored of doing staged readings - unless perfectly cast with actors who are there to do the work and have fun, it's just too difficult.

BK, you do not look at all unhappy to be surrounded by such pretty ladies.

Finished with our little mini-rehearsal - Kim was great, as always, and the thirteen-year-old did her homework and was faboo - she's something else, this girl. I think it will get a huge laugh when we do the Big Spender vamp and she gives her sly smile, followed by a sly eyebrow raise on the second Big Spender vamp, then launching into Hey There Good Times - really funny.
-
I have returned from our rehearsal with an opening number to lay out. I will have to recopy some sections now that keys have been set, and there will be some some cutting and pasting, but it should go rather quickly. It is a long medley composed of these:
Bright Morning Stars Are Rising (sunrise on Christmas morning - the hostess/ family matriarch)
People, Look East (Della getting her family ready)
16 bars of "West Virginia Mine Disaster" (widowed Mamie dressing her autistic son)
Dame, Get Up and Bake Your Pies (the hosts in the kitchen)
There Was a Pig Went Out To Dig (Jarrod Emick and his children gettng ready)
Sing, All Men/Ring the Christ Church Bells (the new minister, leading into the company's arrival)
We began the morning with a new funny song, written by David Lutken and our director DJ called "Snowman on the Mountain," and it's a hoot. The read-down of the new choral parts for "I Wonder As I Wander" read down well, and I'm starting to feel that we will have a good presentation for Friday morning. The cast is truly an amazing group of performers and musicians. I like all thirteen of them enormously.

Not to change the subject or anything, but here's something that I don't understand...Amazon.com is now selling the Broadway cast recording to Catch Me If You Can (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004ZMHR00/ref=s9_simh_co_p340_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=left-2&pf_rd_r=1VB62PB65HA61RSKV20Q&pf_rd_t=3201&pf_rd_p=1280661782&pf_rd_i=typ01) (17 tracks) as a digital download. That's fine. BUT they're also selling the same thing WITH a digital booklet (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0050LLEEA/ref=s9_simh_co_p340_d0_i3?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=left-2&pf_rd_r=1VB62PB65HA61RSKV20Q&pf_rd_t=3201&pf_rd_p=1280661782&pf_rd_i=typ01) for the exact same price...and the same 17 tracks. Why the difference? And why would someone specifically buy the downloadable recording and not choose to get the digital booklet for free?
That's just weird. :-\

Good Evening!
Well... I got invited to a special promotional event for a new "adult beverage". There was a promise of free drinks and free food. Alas, the way they had set up the venue, getting the drinks was a piece of cake, getting the food, however, was a totally different story. The food truck kept preparing trays of food... and would then bring them over to the VIP Press area. Then friends of the chef and the promoter would just step into the truck and get food. Meanwhile...
I did have some good cupcakes, but after waiting in line for 40 minutes for food, I left.
At least I made it home in time for the season finale of "Modern Family".

*Best of all, all proceeds from yesterday went to Doctors Without Borders, and Mr. Bourdain matched all the proceeds and tips.
Ottavia is the husband of chef/author/TV personality Anthony Bourdain??
;)
I guess he meant Ottavia is the wife of Anthony Bourdain. Or Anthony Bourdain is her husband.
...Or maybe I just lost track of what I was typing.
Moving on.
-
Does anyone have a copy of the 1945 film WHY GIRLS LEAVE HOME
It is a very hard film to find to watch and hoping someone here might have a copy.
-
But, yes: Anthony Bourdain is the husband. Ottavia Bourdain is the wife.

and I finally got to listen to Camelot
I enjoyed it very much but I realized a couple of thing s-
I don;t think I ever heard the play score before - I think I have all these years been listening to the movie soundtrack
My upper range hearing is really shot --- I knew i lost some hearing after the radiation treatments but didn't realize how bad it was
I had no trouble hearing and understanding the men but Guenevere was almost impossible for me to understand - I could only hear the sound of her soaring soprano but could not make a out the words - the Vixter however could undertsand it allclearly so I know it is indeed me and not the recording

If anyone is interested in helping out in Joplin, PM me. My church denomination has a group working there. It is a small denomination, so I don't want to post publicly which one it is because I would be too easy to identify by strangers (Internet safety, you know). But I'll tell anyone who posts here.
ETA: This is especially for anyone who doesn't want to donate to the Red Cross. We go at the request of the Red Cross, but the money doesn't go through them.
this is great, Laura. I'm also collecting donations to go directly to Jon's friend Joe. If you didn't receive a letter from me and are interested please let me know. I sent them to whoever I had an email address for. These donations are not tax deductable

VIBES TO ALL IN THE PATH OF STORMS~~~~~~
-
Jon told me today that so many people are bringing water to Joplin that everywhere you look there are stacks of bottled water with "Free" signs on it
-
We had 2.8 inches of rain today. No storms though.
-
Yes. They are usually inundated with well-meaning people donating so much stuff that there's no place to store it.
-
One of Jon's friends is sending 11 boxes of clothes to their house. He had to tell her to stop already
-
Yes.
-
People mean well and want to help. We are a good people.
-
Yes we are. Sometimes it's difficult to know what to do
-
Usually, too many donated items means the charities have to rent storage space and trucks to haul it all. The needed items can be purchased closer to the disaster point at less expense.

Be safe in Indiana and Ohio....looks like another line of storms going through

I have a friend who is on a road trip to the midwest. She got to El Reno about a half hour after the tornado hit yesterday.

Yep, the 11 o'clock news just told us that it would be here in an hour or so. I'm considering just staying up until it's over...

VIBES FOR EVERYONE, THEIR FRIENDS, AND FAMILY. :) :) :)
-
The opening number is finished and copied for tomorrow, and my evening is my own. I am very happy at the moment. Tonight is my own. I've been looking at the beautiful edition of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: AN ANNOTATED EDITION from Harvard University Press and I may start rereading the novel tonight. The next volume in the series is PERSUASION, which is my choice for Austen's greatest novel.
DR JohnG, you sly dog! Asking me about the Jack Tales from the Appalachians. A copy arrived today and, since I didn't order it, I know it was from you. Thank you.
Enjoy. And you're welcome.

Vibes for all in the storms' wake. My brother-in-law was in Kansas City, Mo., this morning but managed to get out before storms hit there. He's apparently home now.

Nice pic bk. 8)

Eating leftover pizza from last night. yum. Ventura has good family run pizza joints. :)
-
Very funny TCB. ;D
-
Came home, took a walk down Main St., to the fountains at the end of the historic district, tossed in 2 dimes for myself and my life at the rose garden, and a quarter for my daughter at the courtyard across the street from the mission. Trying to do this everynight when I get home, it's very centering. And positive. Did I mention I'm becoming very spiritual lately. Calming.
-
Sounds Good Ginny. Or take a sleeping bag to your safe place in the basement
-
Did I mention I am also a little (a lot) nutting lately. Seem to be reverting to childlike behavior too often. ;D
-
That's all. Interesting huh. ???
Night.
;D

The storms are just getting to the west side of our county - we live on the east side, so it'll be about half an hour now. The good news is that they say it will move out quickly.
-
Right on time - we're having another thunderstorm. No sirens this time, though - I think I'll go to bed.
'night!
-
Night Ginny
-
I hope everyone stays safe tonight!
-
Oh...
I guess I dozed off earlier...
Goodnight.

On a cheerier note I hope
ASK BK
Didn't you get another print for Nudie Musical after the release of the DVD that was on another film stock? Or is the above print you mentioned the one I am thinking of?
Also did you have a video version of The Creature Wasn't Nice that was your original version including Broderick Crawford's voice?
Yes, after we did the DVD I got an excellent print on FUJI stock that pretty much had all its color. But in the batch of stuff I just got, I now have the internegative from which all prints were made. I'm hoping that will be in good shape because that's only one generation away from the camera negative, which is lost. But some internegs (called CRIs) fade, so we'll have to see what the story is.
And yes, I do have a video version of my cut - it doesn't look great but from a historical standpoint I think its interesting enough to include.
-
Finished with my viewing.
