As promised, here is the advance announcement of the new Kritzerland release - a wonderful undiscovered gem!  You know the drill - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping paid via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

MIGHTIEST ADVENTURER OF THEM ALL!

Kritzerland is proud to present a new limited edition soundtrack:

MARCO POLO
Music Composed and Conducted by Les Baxter

American International Pictures had begun making a cottage industry by picking up foreign-made films at reasonable prices and then releasing them in the United States, mostly with the original foreign scores replaced by brand new American ones.  Such was the case with 1962’s Marco Polo, a multi-cultural production directed by Hugo Fregonese and starring American Rory Calhoun, along with Yoko Tani and a large cast of multi-cultural players.  Shot in Cinemascope and color, the film was not exactly unerring in its historical accuracy.  In this Marco Polo, Marco Polo is a womanizing bon vivant, vagabond and rake who has to leave Venice because of circumstances of his own making (you get the drift).  A title card then tells us that Marco was an inventor and discoverer who is about to set off to discover many things, including spaghetti.   Along the way, he has many wonderful adventures and occasionally says pithy things like, “A song is an emblem of a gay heart.”  It’s all painted in very broad strokes with tongue firmly in cheek, and it’s a lot of fun in a Saturday matinee way.

The original Italian version’s score was by Angelo Francesco Lavagnino.  For the US version, American International went to their go-to composer, the great Les Baxter.  And Baxter turned in a wonderful score, chockfull of great melodies, including an addictive main theme that repeats itself many times throughout the score.  It was Baxter channeling Rimsky-Korsakov and other movie adventure scores and the result was a colorful, robust, and fun score that really helped give the film a sense of style, adventure, and fun.

Baxter had already made a name for himself with his 1950s exotica recordings, as well as several chart-topping instrumentals.  Prior to Marco Polo, he’d already done Goliath And The Barbarians, House of Usher, Goliath And The Dragon, Black Sunday, Goliath And The Vampires, The Pit And The Pendulum, Erik the Conqueror, and Master Of The World for AIP, and he would go on to score many, many other films for them.   For anyone who grew up going to these films, it was like American International and Les Baxter went hand in hand.

This is the world premiere release of the Les Baxter score to Marco Polo – none of it has ever been available before.  The complete score tapes were housed in the MGM vaults – they were, of course, mono, and in very good condition, and contained all the music that Baxter wrote for the film.   In the last few years, Les Baxter have been something of a Baxter renaissance, with a surprising number of Baxter soundtracks released on CD.  We’re really pleased to present a virtually unknown Baxter score and one of his most delightful.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price of the CD is $19.98, plus shipping.   Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the third week of July – however, never fear, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

You are amazing. Now that I've been paid, I'm sending my check tomorrow.

Cilla, I told one of my co-workers about the situation and she wanted to send a check, too!  Now that I have it, I'll be able to send both hers and mine today! ;D

She suggested that I put something in our staff room for even more donations...I might do that.  What do you think??

No DR JOSE - I knew of the Lucille Ball piece, but I hadn't read much about it or seen clips that I remember.

My problem with Lucy plays continues to be that all of the actresses playing her tend to look like drag queens......but then again.....there is a reason for that.

I have recently discovered when I feel nauseous or even need help when I am about to cough.....I use one of those new Listerine strips.....most helpful....especially during the run of the show.   I drink some water and put in a strip just before I go onstage....and it works everytime!

Good morning, all! I was going to sleep late but I had a phone call from Susanna Moross Tarjan that was more important.

I will spend the day on the Acy One Finale of EILEEN. Yesterday, it took me about  3 hours to proof around 80 bars of music. The finale is close to 400 bars long, so I have a bit to go.

Although Gale Gordon was a publicity client for many years and I often visited the "Here's Lucy" set, the truth is that I was never a big Lucy fan.

I didn't dislike her.  Indeed, I had a great respect for her, but she was just ever one of my favorites.

Vibes that the queasiness passes, BK.

Vibes for Ginny's Aunt Jo.

And many vibes that TCB feels better.

I did get to meet Jacques Pepin for a few minutes last night. Really a very nice and unassuming man. We spoke of the time he lived in upstate New York, in Hunter, when I was living down the road in Catskill and how gorgeous the country there still is. Very pristine.

He also said it was where he met his wife of 45 years, a fact that made his face light up. He's still very much in love and that was charming.

He was there to judge a food-and-wine-pairing contest, but he managed to circulate through the room and greet as many people as possible. The other judges didn't leave the dais on which they had been parked.

bk - I hope you're feeling less-queasy today. However, if you still are - and you don't feel like heading to a doctor's office yet - you may just have to resort of a bland diet for a day or two. Nothing too fatty, nothing too salty, nothing too spicy. In other words, no bacon-cheeseburgers and french fries. ;)

Finished leafing through the Reynolds Auction catalog.  There actually is an index, it's simply buried a few pages before the last pages of the catalog and I hadn't noticed it.

BK, there's a Danny Kaye costume from THE COURT JESTER being auctioned, and it's not expected to go for very much, just in case you're interested.

Also, belay my post of the other day about the Marilyn Monroe dress going for a paltry few hundred thousand.  The white chiffon "subway grate" dress from THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH is expcected to fetch a cool two mil.

That was the little town my parents moved to right after World War II ended.  It was of course 99.9% LDS in those days (it may be down to 99.899% nowadays), and one of the neighbor men came over and introduced himself to my Dad and told him all the men were meeting at the Stake House (the Mormon equivalent of a Parish) that night, and to come down and meet everyone.  My father spent hours driving up and down the Main Street of American Fork looking for the Steak House.  And thus my parents' 50 year adventure with Mormonism began.  :)

your poor father but it is funny in the telling.

I hope eliminating the drugs with corn helps with the blood sugar levels.

A wildfire in Arizona practically exploded overnight on (I believe) Wednesday. Overnight it went from a small fire to 100,000 acres. There is no stopping it. It is now at 140,000. The Monarch Scientist says there is a patch of milkweed where monarchs breed in the summer that she has been studying. It will probably go up in flames.

The area I went to this morning is Oak Flat. It is scheduled to be torn apart to be mined for copper. Lots of people love to go there, and many families camp there in the summertime.

Picked up a small package and an important envelope.  I noticed a few weeks ago that my iPhone's calendar has not been sycnhing with the computer, so I called about it and after about forty minutes all was well.  It seems that the calendar function of iCal and mobile me was changed and one had to upgrade to it to have them synch.  Nice.  So, the first guy I wasted twenty minutes with had me doing all sorts of irrelevant things - wouldn't you think the first question out of his mouth would have been "Did you do the upgrade?"  I was finally switched to someone who knew what he was doing and ten minutes later the synch issues were all fine.

T.O.D.

I am not a great fan of I LOVE LUCY, probably because during the 50s and early 60s, the episodes were repeated over and over again.  With only a few stations to pick from back then, I had my fill of that show.  Today, I would rather sit through a LUCY / DESI COMEDY HOUR marathon, than any episodes of I LOVE LUCY.  Nothing against Miss Ball, but rather a simple case of overdose.

I did love the episode with Harpo Marx, the Fred McMurray episode, and the William Holden episode.

I do like THE LONG LONG TRAILER and FOREVER DARLING.  As for MAME, I think all copies should be burned.

bk - I hope you're feeling less-queasy today. However, if you still are - and you don't feel like heading to a doctor's office yet - you may just have to resort of a bland diet for a day or two. Nothing too fatty, nothing too salty, nothing too spicy. In other words, no bacon-cheeseburgers and french fries. ;)

Or anything that tastes good.

How about Barbara Stanwyck's TITANIC coat.

Topic of the Day...ditto. :D

The Manhattan Transfer recorded a song called "Blee Blop Blues" in 1985 and the music video was a spoof of "I Love Lucy."  They recreated the set, they dressed up as Lucy, Ricky, Ethel and Fred and did essentially a whole new Lucy episode in one song.  It's pretty darned cool!  There's a weirdly squished version on YouTube, but if you want to watch the whole thing, go to The Manhattan Transfer's official website (http://www.manhattantransfer.net/main.html) (sorry, I can't link directly to the video), then scroll down to "City Sound" and click "off," otherwise it stays on throughout the whole site and is very annoying.  Then near the bottom on the right side, click on "Videos."  Once that comes up, click on "Vocalese" at the top (not Vocalese Live), then click on "Blee Blop Blues" in the list on the right.

Their Vocalese (http://www.amazon.com/Vocalese-Manhattan-Transfer/dp/B000002II2/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1307243954&sr=1-1) album is one of my favorite albums of theirs.
