TOD: There were two costumes I worked on back in junior high. One was an island native (horribly politically incorrect these days, I realize). I made grass shirts out of green potato bags and bought some sort of body tan goop to make my skin brown and I had a drum at my side.

Second was as the headless horseman. I made a papier mache head with bulging eyes and fangs that I carried around with me while I shoved pillows on my shoulders inside a trench coat and covered my head with black cloth.

Both of them were fun.

TOD:

I don't recall any specific costume I wore on Halloween...just the fun of walking up and down our street (23rd Ave.E) in Seattle doing the "Trick or Treat" thing.

Last night, we had several kids come to the door.

One little boy, dressed as Spiderman, would get his candy, then go to the back of the line and come back for more.

He will do well in life.

Good morning, all! I had a strange dream involving Barbra Streisand, my evil brother Macbeth, and a flower shop where I was trying to help a customer buy plants. That's all I remember now. Any dream with Streisand can only be considered a nightmare in my book - sorry, DR KevinH! - so I guess it was a Halloween nightmare.

Yesterday, when I got home from rehearsal, I had a little dinner, wrote out the new bass part for "The Cherry Tree Carol," read the mail and fell over. This morning is a quiet one; we don't begin until noon, so I can spend a liesurely morning, then do some banking on my way downtown. Today, we go from noon to six pm. We're staggering lunch breaks between 2:30 and 4 today so the men can learn "Good Old Mountain Dew" while the ladies are out and then the ladies can learn "How Far Is It To Bethlehem" during the men's break.

The group handled some of my crunchier harmonies quite well yeterday: I expected a revolt after 8 bars of "I Wonder As I Wander," but it was sounding quite good by the end of its session, and the new finale of the show, the New Year Carol, sounds realy good, although I'm still not sure if I like what I wrote for its 16-bar finish. It will either grow on me or I'll rewrite it for the next go-round.

We now have a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Christmas-Up-the-Holler/224697947591482?ref=ts&sk=wall

My favorite Halloween costume lately....well there are two of them.....different years of course...

DR EVIL KURT and I went as crewmen from the Titanic in our caps and turtlenecks....and blue ghostly makeup.

And also another year I wore white tie and tails and carried a cabbage patch kid - since I was the Valet of the Dolls.

Speaking of which, after our discussion of BEN CASEY yesterday, I went online and got several old CDs of TV themes, including collections conducted/arranged by Nelson Riddle, Neal Hefti and Pete Rugolo (who just passed away), all of them containing the BEN CASEY theme.  Whatever happened to Valjean?  No, not the Les Mis one.

TOD:

My favorite costume was the year a friend who was working in the Temple University theatre department invited a few of us to do a last minute raid on the department costume closet.  The pickings were slim, but I managed to put together a strange costume consisting of an Elizabethan leather vest over a neon green puffy shirt with bright red tights.  I added a navy blue velvet waist cape, armored boots, leather gloves, an orange and yellow sombrero and a commedia dell'arte mask with a broken nose.  I also carried a sword.  I had no idea what I was supposed to be but I was easy to spot at the party that night.

A very quiet Halloween in my building.  We don't have trick-or-treaters in the building.

I believe trick-or-treating in Oakland is confined to various neighborhoods. Parents always walk with their kids, too.

My 6 year old niece actually loved handing out the candy. She asked me later if she could stay home from trick or treating next year so that she could hand out the candy at her house. I told her that would mean she would not get any candy and she said that was okay.

Surprising since she loves candy. And she actually loves trick or treating. She just really liked handing out candy.

Listening to the original CD for a title we're doing soon.  For what it was back then it sounds okay, but we're completely remixing from the sixteen-track tapes, so it should sound much better when we're done.  Hoping there's some extra cues, too, as the score is fairly short on the original LP and CD - thirty-two minutes.  But even if it isn't, we've unearthed a fun little extra - the film had its original score replaced by the one that's now in the film.  We found that original score and I have to tell you it's no wonder the studio was in shock after the film was previewed with that score.  It's composer, not really known as a film score composer despite having done a handful, is one of my faves and while some of the music is interesting and fun on a certain level it did not belong in this particular film.  In any case, that score is even shorter but we've got it all and it will make a nice little addition.

I understand that he died several years ago, but I am probably wrong about that, too.

After being shot down by the surgeon in September, I had really looked forward to today's first injection.  First of all, the nurse asked me to climb up on this gurney.  I told her I would need some help since I couldn't walk.  We fianlly got me up there, and the doctor spent about forty-five minutes talking to me and asking about symptoms.  When we finished the interview, he said, "I hope you realize that this injection is only a pain blocker.   It is very doubtful that it will help any other symptoms."   He then said (are you sitting down?), " I think you are going to have to face the fact that you probably going to have to have additional surgery."

After I got thru explaining what the surgeon had told me, we both just looked at each other and shook our heads.  The doctor said he had no idea why the surgeon would tell me that I didn't need more surgery.

I have now booked an appointment with the other surgeon.  That appointment will be on December 16.

I am back from a very god rehearsal.we spent most of the day learning the rest of the new music, and at the end of the day we ran "I Wonder as I Wander" and the finale "New Year Carol," which are both coming together very nicely. The cast is starting to sound like an ensemble, and I was very happy with what we accomplished today.

Passing the London Palladium today I was reminded that I used to often visit the theater in the '60s when it used to have regular variety shows. One of the most wonderful shows which I will never forget was seeing Sammy Davies Jr in a one man show - what an amazingly talented and energetic performer he was!

I enjoyed Tommy Steele.  It was just an eye-opener to me that there is really nothing enjoyable about a stage musical that is made out of a movie, when they go word for word from the movie.

Of all my costumes, I think one of my favorites was when I was 8 and I dressed as Shirley Temple -- the wig, the little dress, and a very big lollipop.  None of the kids knew who I was, but I remember winning a contest at school.  (I'm glad they didn't figure height into their decision.)

Speaking of Shirley Temple (several posts back), I wonder why the lyric of "I'm Still Here" in Follies differs from production to production, notably the current Broadway version vs Chicago's.   On Broadway, Elaine Page is singing:  I've been through Shirley Temple.,  while in Chicago, Hollis Resnick refers to "Brenda Frazier.   I think it makes sense to sing about Brenda Frazier,' who was famous for being a debutante, I believe.  Shirley Temple is a beloved (for the most part) entertainer, so it doesn't make sense to me that Carlotta would have a negative memory of her.

Maybe it's because the name Brenda Frazier is not familiar to most people now?

Apparently, a long-running show just posted their closing notice backstage.

Or not.

*I'm still checking Twitter and BWW.

DR KevinH - That's the reason. Both are "official".

How long do you have to wait until the next injection?

January

Another strange thing.  When I left "the miracle worker" doctor's office in September, he told me to not come back and see him unitl after my third injection.  So i asked today's doctor if January was going to be the second injection, when was the third one goiing to be.  he gave me a rather stange look and said, "We don't do a third injection."  WTF?

I keep thinking I have landed in a TWILIGHT ZONE episode.

Is Wohns is a back surgeon specializing in your specific problem?

I believe so.

He also did my neck fusion about a hundred years ago.

The guy you wanted to go to in the first place? :(

No, but the guy I should have gone to in the first place.

VIBES THIS IS TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it has to do with the dumbing down of America; I believe most of the current audiences for FOLLIES wouldn't know who Brenda was but they probably don't have the skills or intellectual curiosity to look her up.

I don't want to jump the gun, but it seems like my back pain might not be as bad as last night.  I am going to follow today's doctor advice, and just lay low tomorrow.  I will sleep in and turn on the electric blanket so I don't get chilled.

:) :)  CONTINUED VIBES IT IS WORKING!!!!!

Today the dermatologist removed a small, recurring, skin cancer off of my face.  She also biopsied it first & I should have the results back in a week or so.

Thank you.  I prefer not to have any of my face cut out but if I do at least it is on the side of my face.

Last night's "Castle" was wonderful!

It is just me, or does anyone else find that Stana Katic's "look" has become very chic.  She's a beautiful woman and she looks particularly fantastic this season.

She's in love!

Cilla, will you be participating in the caucuses?

I don't know.  I usually do, but this year I'm not sure.  There isn't a politician I like.

Well, TCB here is a nice classic publicity shot of two favorite 1950s actors, Tab Hunter and John Bromfield, to make you feel better....some say this photo has gay subtex, but I just don't see it  8)

Of course not, Mike.  No more than this publicity still.

DR TCB - That truly made me Laugh Out Load during tech.

And then I showed it to some members of the cast, and they got a good laugh from it. A much needed laugh. :)

DR Cillaliz - I always know where I am when I wake up. The only thing I usually I have to keep track of is whether or not I paid - or got paid - in advance.

:D

I only asked because sometimes after I've been traveling I wake up and it takes me a minute to figure out where I am and it's usually my own house.

And on that note (D-natural), I'm going home, after a stop at Costco for some gasoline for my car...and maybe a quick trip through the store to see what movies they have for sale.

Be back later.

And...

We still have about 35 minutes left to go tonight, and once the stage manager excuses us for the evening, I will be dashing to the subway to head back to my brother's place and then right to bed since I have another long day of tech tomorrow. So...

I shall bid you fine folk adieu...

Goodnight.

Had a really good stumble-through - a couple of ragged things we worked through afterwards, and while we were running I saw that I'd put two songs too close together so before we got to them I flipped them around, which was much better.  So far we've got a little over thirty reservations tomorrow night - hoping that ten people just show up, which is what usually happens - forty fills the room very nicely.  It's so nice to hear these incredible voices doing my songs.

Tonight I put all the outdoor furniture etc away for the winter. Luckily I only have one car in my two car garage.  I can get everything, furniture, grill, tiki cat, etc in the other side of the garage.   I may pull it all out and clean and rearrange if we have some nice days, but if the weather turns before I get to it, all will be well.  One less thing to worry about

Listening to some not so good acetates of The Night Of The Hunter score - I know I could clean them up really well, but unfortunately RCA retains the rights to the old narrated LP and so MGM can't license this.  What a shame.  What music.
