Title: TEENY-TINY NUTS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were tiny and nutty, and now it is time for you to post until the teeny-tiny cows come home.

Good morning, all! Yesterday was quite a long day and my hurdle of a weekend is not yet over. The most tedious and time-comsuming is the booklet for the Herbert songs. I've found a few things already, but the most involved part is checking the layout of the German texts with the English versions andassuring that I missed nothing when I converted my files per the New World Records request. I've already found one spot and it looks like there may be several others. Oy.

I've also got Joshie's newest corrections to the DEAREST ENEMY vocal score, which have to be proofed along with the last four numbers in the score so he can begn the final round of work, which he's juggling between Encores! and a couple of other jobs, and at any time now I'm due for another orchestra score or two for the Rodgers & Hart show (seven full scores to go!). I plan to work my proverbial butt off this morning on the booklet, see at noon where things stand, and make a decision about attending the HHW meetup this afternoon. Work and play in New York, as a self-employed person, have always had their conflicts for me, which is why "Finishing the Hat" moved me so much when I saw the original workshop of SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE:
 Finishing the hat
How you have to finish the hat
How you watch the rest of the world
 From a window
 While you finish the hat

 Mapping out a sky
What it feels like, planning a sky
How it feels when voices that come
 Through the window go
 Until they distance and die

That's my day, and that is the end of the news.

More coffee,

I just had a fire in my kitchen. In my preoccupied state I set an empty bag of chips on a low flame, went back to work and shortly smelled something burning. Luckily the fire involved only the counter, sink and stove. It could have been much worse, although now I need to make time and clean up the damned mess.

Good morning, DR Danise! I am fine, thanks, grateful that there wasn't a worse fire, and there could have been if the burning bag had fallen into the recyclable paper bin. Everything's cleaned up now, and I've discovered that Ajax scouring powder and a god brush will clean melted plastic off sharp knives. I'm also thoroughly pissed over my stupidity in not turning off the gas burner when I finished my coffee. That was the stupidest move so far this morning.

Maybe you wanted to subconsciously invite a fireman into your home DR ELMORE.

I'm surprised DR MBarnum hasn't used that ploy!

Since I call 911 at any hint of smoke in the air, the firemen have been here far too often! Remember in 2008, during the bed bug mess, when the bitch neighbor down the hall was so terrified that I was send bugs down to her apartment that she called the fire dept. to make me remove the cartons I was sending to Miami University Library from the hallway, and they came and issued me an order to remove the cartons within 24 hours or be fined? She's never called to complain about the slob across the hall who leaves stacks of cartons and newspapers outside his place for months!

Was reading the posts from yesterday--the idea about a smartphone for TCB.  I have a spare LG Optimus model phone that I would be happy to give to you, TCB.  It works with the Virgin Phone network.  It's a pay as you go type of phone and I believe the cost is now $35.00 a month for unlimited internet/text and I think 300 anytime talk minutes.  The reason I switched phones to the LG Optimus Slider was because it didn't have the slide out keyboard.  I was having problems with using the on screen keyboard because of the arthritis in my hands.  I don't know if that would be a problem for  you.

If you think it would help, I would be more than happy to send it to you.

We all do "why did I DO that" things from time to time.  I'm just glad you were not hurt.   I saw something cute on Facebook the other day:  I've learned so much from my mistakes that I'm thinking about making some more!  :)

I have to say I LOVE my new phone and used it quite a bit while in NYC.  It was such a help with the GPS and the maps.  I used one app to mark the hotel location so no matter where I went, I just had to look at  a map to figure out where I was and how to get back.

That was how I found MOOD as well.  The only problem there was figuring out that you had to go inside the building and up to the 3rd floor.  I kept passing by the spot the map showed but there was nothing on the outside to tell you MOOD was in the building.

On the subject of proofing:

Yesterday, while reading Stephen Citron's book about Sondheim and Lloyd Webber, I came across a photo from A Little Night Music of Desiree (Glynis Johns, her daughter (Judy Kahan) and her maid (Despo). The latter looks nothing like Hermione Gingold, yet the woman is identified in the caption as being Desiree's mother. The book makes some other deplorable mistakes, including writing about how "Every Day a Little Death" is composed in a variation of 3/4 time, when it is not. (My vocal score has it in 4/4 and Sondheim himself has spoken a great deal about how it is not one of the waltz variations.)

This morning, in the musical overview, "Strike Up the Band," author Scott Miller writes about "composer Noble Sissle" and his score for "Shuffle Along" before repeating a quote that was from the show's real composer, Eubie Blake. Sissle was lyricist.

Yet, hard as we try when we edit, mistakes will get past people.

Spent the day in Austin yesterday at SXSW. Rain, rain and more rain through the early part of the evening. But the food was really good and the music fine. Saw a group called Quiet Company that included cello, trombone and zylophone amid their hard rock sound. And the band was entirely dressed in suits. You couldn't understand a lyric because the sound mix was way off, but the sound was fun.

Next Saturday, the parties get kicked up a notch because it's the closing. Looking forward to Racheal Ray's, with Jimmy Cliff and Train among the performers. And maybe we'll get back to the Cooking Channel's shindig.

I had a great day yesterday!

I saw "Seminar," starring Alan Rickman, Jerry O'Connell and three other actors  (including the guy who played Julia Louis-Dreyfus's brother on The New Adventures of Old Christine).
The acting was great and I mostly enjoyed it, but it's really not my kind of show, I guess.

I later saw "Once," which certainly lived up to DRs Ben and elmore's raves!  I loved it---such talented people on stage.  The two leads were perfect as was BK's friend Andy Taylor , who really fooled me with his Irish accent!

To top of my day, I was invited by BK to join him and his friend Walter at Joe Allen's after the show.  I spotted them right away --they had a great view of the entrance.  Walter was interesting and friendly and BK was as funny as ever.

Brent and Bernie joined us not long after.  I do believe they were quite surprised to see me, but were gracious as always.

I really enjoyed myself and heard some discussion of Brent's possible participation in Outside the Box--I'm sure it will be hilarious!

Thanks again to BK for inviting me----it was so great of you!

I tried using the internet in my room ($14.95 for 24 hours) and it didn't work.  Went to the lobby for the free wi-fi---didn't work. So I walked across the street to another hotel and voila, free internet!  Shh--don't tell anyone I'm not registered here.

Elmore,  how terribly frightening!  I am so glad you were able to put the fire out in time !  I hope that the clean up is not too onerous

The cleanup went very quickly, thanks to Ajax powder, a good scrub brush, Fantastic, and a lot of paper towels. I am a bit concerned that something burning might have fallen behind the stove and is waiting to burst into flame when I turn my back.

In August 1971, the building in Oxford OH next to my apartment burned and collapsed, killing a fireman. My building was closed so I spent 3-4 weeks driving from home to and from work with no possessions and the few clothes I was able to retrieve before the fire got out of control. In 1973, one of my brother's rooms in my parents' home burned up, due to his clutter and something left in the garbage (I've always assumed it was a joint he and his friend Kenny were smking). All of my property suffered smoke and water damage. I do worry about fires.

Beautiful day here in New York, New York.  Had a fun meeting with Kevin - I just had a small English muffin, so if I don't eat any bread later, that will be fine.  I've also walked one mile so far and will walk at least two more before the evening is done.  While I didn't get to bed until three, thanks to the time change, I slept really well - VERY comfy bed and for once a pillow in a hotel that's actually comfortable.  I slept until ten, so seven good hours of sleep.

Yes that is the very phone I'm talking about.    Thanks for the photo, Der B!   It's in very good shape, about a year old but I never had any problems with it (except for the on screen keyboard).  The phone I bought to replace it is the very same one except it has the slide out keyboard.

I would love to see it get used by a friend who needs it then sit in a drawer.  I would appreciate the help with getting it changed over to TCB because I've never done that but I would guess I would just need to call Virgin and let them know that he is the new owner.

The only other thing I can think of is that you might want to go on Ebay and invest in a longer lasting battery.   Going on the web eats power like you wouldn't believe.  I just bought an extended battery for the new phone and it only cost me around eighteen bucks.   It makes the back of the phone a little larger and you can't buy a snap on case but it is well worth it so you don't have to keep charging the phone as often.

The serendipity of foot-dragging – or how I got a Smart-Phone at no added cost)

Some 5 years ago, to appease my daughter’s attempts to drag me into the 21st Century, I bought a call phone. I opted for the cheapest deal I could find – a Virgin Mobile dumb-phone with a pay-ss-you-go plan.  The basic cost was $20 every 90 days to keep the phone active; calls would be charged by the minute ($.50 every day I made a call, plus 20 cents/minute for each call. Daughter was, of course, appalled:- I would go broke paying by the minute).

Well, the reason I wanted the phone was to enjoy its “mobile feature”, so, I left it in the car, turned off, unless I was on the go.

I’m not a big “on the go” phone chatter, so I never once needed to add money; in fact, the unused dollars kept accumulating in my account

As time went on, I found the idea a better mobile phone desirable – my aging eyes and shaky fingers made using the phone’s old-fashion keypad entry awkward – and texting by numeric keypad is a night-mare (unless you’re teen-age enabled).

I wanted to keep my old plan and buy a new phone, but Lordy, what ever happened to the $20 cell! The cheapest phone available with a touch-screen for data entry was $90.

On a lark, I emailed Virgin and asked them if I could apply any of the balance of my account to purchasing a new phone; sure, was the reply, you can use you account to purchase anything on our web site.

Well, Mr. kept-his-mouth-shut for five years had accumulated an account balance pushing $400!!! All that money either for a shopping spree or texting contributions  at $5/pop to Haitian Relief.

Charity begins at home.

I spent $280 for the best smart-phone available (A Motorola Triumph) and bought an up-grade for Woody for $90 – and still have money left. To make internet usage cost effective I did have to upgrade my plan to a $35/month version (which a great deal cheaper than most competitive services); that gets me unlimited 3G Internet and 300 minutes/month of vocal chit-chat.
I left Woody’s plan at the $20/90 day limit (he can get Internet by the minute, but it’s pricey) He can however receive text messages and reply with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

I am having fun learning the neat things I can do with my Smart Phone:

A.   I have a text version of my Medication list available for Dr. Visits
B.   I have the 1500 record Excel spreadsheet of all our DVD’s handy for viewing when shopping. (And I have a quick-link to IMDB to check on film details) (See Note 1)
C.   I can send photos of merchandise from a store to my daughter to see if that’s the thing she wants.
D.   I can check on restaurants and use a phone hot-link to make a call to check on daily specials or make reservations)
E.   I can check on show times at Movie theatres and buy tickets ahead (at a premium).
F.   I can amuse myself in the Dr’s waiting room reading the current news updates. (Or catch up on Haines His Way – see Note 2)
G.   I can use Amazon to check on prices while out shopping.

Note 1. The Outlet Mall has a recent addition – an OOPS store that sells deeply discounted books, CDs, and DVDs (no Blue Ray yet DVDs are 3 for $15! Lots of Al Pacino, Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, etc)
Our last DVD shopping binge was at Blockbusters whose close out sale included virtually everything, including Blue Rays, at $3.00 each!

Note 2: Haines His way is a bit clunky to use on a Mobile – even in landscape mode, easily readable type size throws most messages off screen. Plus, you need to expand the screen greatly to be able to touch-activate the page numbers to navigate. Someday maybe we’ll have a Mobile-friendly version that puts the left hand side avatar/stats window on top of the messages (at least puts the Users name in the message heading so you can move the screen to the right while scrolling down).

I would appreciate the help with getting it changed over to TCB because I've never done that but I would guess I would just need to call Virgin and let them know that he is the new owner.

The only other thing I can think of is that you might want to go on Ebay and invest in a longer lasting battery.

A: "GIFTING" YOUR OLD VIRGIN PHONE (http://virginmobileusa.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/934/kw/giving%20phone%20to%20a%20friend)

Quote
Earn free airtime after you swap your phone
If you've just gotten another Virgin Mobile phone for yourself, why not give your old Virgin Mobile phone to someone else?

Pass it on to a friend and they could get 60 minutes in bonus airtime when they reactivate your old phone and Top-Up for the first time.

Better than that, you could get a 60 minutes airtime bonus, too.

Just make sure to switch your phone number to a new Virgin Mobile phone before you give your old phone to anyone else.

B. On battery use.

Those of us who are mobi9lity-challenged have nifty work-arounds:

In the home environment have a AC-to-USB cord connector at the end of an extention cord by your arm chair/sofa and another by your bed; move your phone with its mini USb/USB cord attached.

In the on-the-go environment - have a 12VDV/USB charger in your car to hook up your phone.

Rearely are you going to out and about with your phone on draining the battery.

(Now if I were gadding about on day trips using mass transit I might have second thoughts on a bigger battery.)

I only use my Cell Phone if I have a flat tire.

Well, actually they come in quite handy if you're running late for an appoinment; a quick text is a lot easier than stopping at a gas station to make a phone call and a lot more polite than letting your host hanging.

der Brucer

Also, if you have relatives in a rural area that always fail to plan more than 20 minutes ahead, it's nice to text "Will be passing the Market in 10 minuts - need anything?" when driving up to a family get-together.

(It also helps to have a passanger to do the texting.)

I normally don't have battery problems but when I was getting all the phone calls/txts/emails from the AC show producer, my battery was barely making it though the whole day at work until I could get it home and on the charger.  I expect the same will happen when things get going with Angies List so I thought a better battery might be a good investment.

I also love the new SkyVi app and the Advanced Task Killer Froyo.  SkyVi makes the Android more like the Apple phone in that it can talk to you and you to it.

I just had a fire in my kitchen. In my preoccupied state I set an empty bag of chips on a low flame, went back to work and shortly smelled something burning. Luckily the fire involved only the counter, sink and stove. It could have been much worse, although now I need to make time and clean up the damned mess.

elmore, I am certainly glad that the fire wasn't any worse.   I think you need a bit of a diversion this afternoon.

Is a god brush only good to use on Sunday?

I'm very glad the fire wasn't uncontrollable.

VIBES YOU DON'T EXPERIENCE ANY MORE FIRES!!!

That is a very kind and generous offer, Danise.  Let me check things out and I will get back to you.  I definately need a keyboard that  I can actually use.

If memory serves, when you left Varese Sarabande you took your catalog to The Label Whose Name Can Not Be Spoken (TLWNCNBS).

With the demiise of the high-jacked TLWNCNBS, what happened to the catalog?

I ask becasue I was looking up the Cast Reording for PLAY ON and found no new producers (just off label sellers).

The author probably asked Ms Johns on one of her drinking days who was in the picture with her.

I only use my Cell Phone if I have a flat tire.

Speaking of Brent, I was curious to know if Brent had any desire to return to Vegas to do POTO one more time before it closes.

DR Ginny, the fire in my parents' home was in September of 1973; I didn't know you then.

I didb't go to the gathering; I lost time this morning because of the fire, and Iwas really leery about going out for a couple of hours in case a bit of burning something was smoldering outside my sight. It's better for my peace of mind to work here.

I finished all of the full scores that need editing and Josh's vocal score, so now I cn buckel down to the recording booklet.

I want to be a Grammy but my children aren't cooperating. :(

I managed to get to HHW on my cell phone, and I even managed to get to today's posts; but, 1) the font was so small even my cheaters didn't help that much, and 2) I had no idea how to post from there.

DR TCB - Richard had trouble with the on-screen keyboard on his iPhone, but has started using this stylus/pen combo (http://www.staples.com/Targus-2-In-1-Stylus/product_369693) and it's been a big help.  If you end up taking DR Danise's phone, I will send you a stylus as a get-well gift!

Sorry, Ginny, I forgot to respond to your post.  If I opt to use Danise's  phone, I would be delighted to receive a stylus.  Thank you.  I feel like I am back in the early 90s all over again.  In those days, my techmology score was a -5.  Now I feel the same way about LG, androids, ipads, ibrows, think pads, and all the rest that I don't even know the names.

You're welcome, DR TCB.  Just let me know if you get any kind of device with a touchscreen.  Otherwise, I'll sent you something else...

The author probably asked Ms Johns on one of her drinking days who was in the picture with her.
After "Mary Poppins" and "The Ref," Ms. Johns can do no wrong.

I had a couple of run ins with that author at the Drama Book Shop. He was married ro some lady who was more well-known than he. He was not the brightest bulb in the lamp.
Which one, Citron or Miller?

To top of my day, I was invited by BK to join him and his friend Walter at Joe Allen's after the show.  I spotted them right away --they had a great view of the entrance.  Walter was interesting and friendly and BK was as funny as ever.

Brent and Bernie joined us not long after.  I do believe they were quite surprised to see me, but were gracious as always.

I really enjoyed myself and heard some discussion of Brent's possible participation in Outside the Box--I'm sure it will be hilarious!

Thanks again to BK for inviting me----it was so great of you!

Speaking of Brent, I was curious to know if Brent had any desire to return to Vegas to do POTO one more time before it closes.

or indeed to the lovely state of Washington to perform a private show

That is a very kind and generous offer, Danise.  Let me check things out and I will get back to you.  I definately need a keyboard that  I can actually use.
No problem.  I don't know about the pen/styles thing DR Ginny spoke of but it would be GREAT if that would help. :)

Please forgive my stupidity.  So, the keyboard is on the screen?

No problem.  Believe me I didn't really understand it either when I bought it which is why I want to make sure it is something that would help you.  The keyboard is on the screen and you touch the letters to type.  The problem I was having was that I don't always feel right in my hands with the arthritis and I would touch something harder then I wanted to and get double letters  kk for example which can be a pain when you've already typed another sentence. I have to be 100% honest and tell you that I do use the slide out keyboard and I will never buy another phone without one.

Do you have a Best Buy or a Target near you that you could get to so you could look at the phone and ask questions?

I need to go to the store anyway so I'll check out what they have.  I wish they made a better selection of fanny packs.  I find wearing the purse around my waist is easier on my shoulders.  The travel belt bag is pretty but I think it is too small.

Were you friends?

No. I never met him. But my business partner, Bonnie (the one who's off in New York now), did a lengthy and wonderful profile of him a few years back. Turns out he had pretty much turned over his restaurant to family in recent years to take care of his parents. His father died about a month ago. I feel really bad for his mother to have lost both husband and son in such a short period of time.

So, the reputation was of a good man who also happened to be a good restaurateur.

I don't mind those stories.

I just had a fire in my kitchen. In my preoccupied state I set an empty bag of chips on a low flame, went back to work and shortly smelled something burning. Luckily the fire involved only the counter, sink and stove. It could have been much worse, although now I need to make time and clean up the damned mess.

:o Yikes!!

Glad that it wasn't as bad as it could've been!
