Title: TOOTH AND NAIL
Post by: bk on March 15, 2012, 12:04:33 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes fought both tooth and nail, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently fighting tooth and nail to not come down with mad cow disease, even though they are, by nature, quite angry.

Good morning, all! Last night was another long, rambling Drama Book Shop dream. I remember very little about it now.

I've got these Tunick charts to finish proofing for Joshie, and that will take up a good part of my day. I may do laundry, since tomorrow and the weekend are busy with Toyland matters.

That is the end of the news.

More Coffee!

I have never gotten Mr Olivier and find him fairly UNhandsome and hammy in most things - perhaps he was best onstage.

I will say that the only performance of his that I really like - and that may be because of the subject matter is the title role in:

Richard III

Thursday morning greetings!  We had a great time last night at the Rick Steves event sponsored by my former employer.  It was nice to see several library friends and even one of my grantwriter friends.  The event was held in the beautiful auditorium at the Dayton Art Institute and Rick gave a fabulous presentation.  To answer DR Jane's question from last night, we don't have specific plans for another trip to Europe but will probably do something in 2013.

You probably know Rick is a Northwesterner and his show is syndicated by Oregon Public Broadcasting.  I reviewed several of his company' Blu-rays last year.

Last night I watched a war film titled SNIPER'S RIDGE (1961) which starred Jack Ging, Stanley Clements, and John Goddard. With that cast you can correctly guess that it was a B film, but it was certainly good...and short.

I think that both Jack Ging and Stanley Clements are very underrated actors.

Thanks for the vibes, I'm back not really much worse for the wear.  Part of my anxiety is I've only had one "real" cavity in my whole life (I have a couple of other fillings from my adolescence caused by my braces, believe it or not).  I found out today the issue is age, not lack of dental hygiene, which I find incredible considering my extreme youth.  :)  But today's filling (for age related root decay) was easy.  The bad news is my dentist thinks I should have two teeth pulled by an oral surgeon, again due to age related root decay.  I asked him if I waited long enough if they would just fall out, and he stared at me, agog.  ;)

I asked him if I waited long enough if they would just fall out, and he stared at me, agog.  ;)

I want a second opinion, Jeffrey.   Of all the dental ills I have endured (including an abscessed tooth that had, less than 6 months earlier, been crowned...badly, as it turns out), I have never had anyone mention "age-related root decay."  That's not to say I think something like that is unlikely...I'm just saying I spent my teenage years in a dentist's chair...being treated with minimal anesthesia.  I used to squeeze dents into the arms of the chairs with my hands to tolerate the pain of drills against raw nerves.  My dentist told my mom I was a difficult patient and that I was properly anesthetized.

I was in the Navy when I learned that I wasn't supposed to feel pain.  And if I did feel pain, then "normal" application of anesthesia was not sufficient.

Big revelation.

Anyway, I've had a laser treatment (LANAP procedure) done on my whole mouth...followed up with some sort of injections into my gums.  Had a DNA test done and discovered I have a rare bacteria in my mouth that affects gums.  The injections rid my gums and roots of the bacteria, and the toothpaste (gel) I now use (kind of pricy at $15 a tube) keeps it all in check.  My teeth are probably healthier today than they've been since I was a kid (the military dentists did nothing but fill, refill and re-re-fill teeth that should been crowned).

ALL OF THAT SAID...it seems odd that I've never had anyone mention "age-related root decay."  It seems like something that would be right up my alley.  Unless, of course, you're "considerably" older than I.

Everytime I see DR Mike, I think it is me...so don't get us mixed up.

That appears to be the case.  There is no longer a "Michael Shayne" in the member listings....but "Mike" has over 9,000 posts.  I think Mr. Shayne did a name change.

When we were in Dublin I purchased Twiggy's book & was pleased to find she mentioned Bruce in it.

Today at work, we had our annual St. Patrick's Day potluck.  I brought some sparkling lemonade (I know it's not Irish, but that's what I brought*).  I also brought the original cast recording of The Irish ... And How They Got That Way (http://www.amazon.com/Irish-They-That-Original-Members/dp/B0000060EJ/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1331849372&sr=1-1) (album produced by our very own BK!) to listen to.  People thoroughly enjoyed the music! :D

I also brought a DVD+R that I made of the video (http://www.amazon.com/Frank-McCourts-Irish-They-That/dp/B000N0T3Q4/ref=pd_sim_m_1) and I'm listening to that as I work.  It's longer than the CD (of course) and was filmed live.  It's very good.

*I was planning on bringing spinach and mozzarella ravioli that I bought at Costco last night (even though it's not Irish either...the spinach is green, though), but I had a brain fart and left it on my kitchen counter overnight.  Spoo. :P

Based on the novel SISTER CARRIE by Theodore Dreiser? I think the flm is better than the novel. I read it during the BABES IN TOYLAND periodwhere I was reading about the scandalous life of a chorus girls around 1905.

If he could drive himself he would skip the doctor's appointment.

The vet looked at his ear and exclaimed it looked painful.  He has a minor yeast infection and the top section of the inside of the ear looks like a bacterial infection.  We got a third medication to add to the two we picked up for the yeast infection.  The new med is a spray which also has a steroid in it to help with the itching & pain.

After the vet appointment we took him for a hike.

I'm listening to the new version of Casino Royale - yes, ours wasn't enough, we now have a new one.  The big difference with this release is it contains the entire score taken from the music stems - hence mono and not great mono at that, and made worse by putting unnecessary reverb on it to make it spread - never a good idea.  And I have to say what Burt assembled for the original album is just about all I'd ever need of the score, but for completists this is nice.  The second disc in the package is the album, not taken from our rather amazing master, but from a tape copy found in Spain, used for the Spanish release of the LP - hence, a second or third generation copy and it sounds like it - not a patch on the butt cheeks of what our James Nelson was able to do.  Thankfully this is being pointed out by several people - that for sound, the Kritzerland release is still the one.   One silly person posted that they'd gotten rid of our disc when this new one was announced, never a good idea until the release actually happens.

Betsy thinks I should get a second opinion, too.  He showed me the digital x-rays and explained that I *could* have a $4000 root canal on this tooth but that the tooth probably wouldn't be saved in any case, so why not just remove it.  It's resting right next to a wisdom tooth and so getting to it to do a filling is impossible, evidently.

He said age related root decay is very common for those over 50 (I still don't know why he's including me in that group  ::) ).  He said what happens is the gums recede and then tiny cavities down where the gum used to cover them up are exposed.  That's what he's calling age related root decay.

I asked him if I waited long enough if they would just fall out, and he stared at me, agog.

:D

Is Mike your name preference vs Michael?  Reading your posts I knew who I was reading until I noticed the name Mike  :o ;D  then I had to check your posts to confirm it was you.

OK, I read that as tooth decay, not root.  Still, I would get a second opinion before pulling teeth.  Ask around for recommendations.  You didn't mention how old the dentist is.  If older you might try someone younger for the 2nd opinion.

I had a horrible oral surgery incident in my 20s when I had a wisdom tooth pulled and so I am loathe to go through that again.

I will say I was pleasantly surprised at how little the novocaine shot today hurt.  When I had my only other "real" cavity a couple of years ago they had to go right into the mandible and I thought I was going to scream.  I have a very low pain threshold.  :)

Having bangers and mash today.

We had great Bangers and Mash at

Benjys in Earl Court (http://www.google.com/maps?q=&layer=c&z=17&iwloc=A&sll=51.492872,-0.193988&cid=13769837641000776577&cbp=13,58.6,11.8,0,0&panoid=ZDNcJGjEHNGxlO8-7nu3uA&q=%22earls+court+ROAD%22+'BENJYS%22&ei=LDFiT-C-Guj50gGV_-mnCA&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=streetview-image-link&cd=1&resnum=4&ved=0CBYQnwIoADAD)

when we were last in London. It's been too long, it was 2003!!! I miss my London and my Dublin!

Unfortunately one of the reviews on that link says Benjy's closed down last August.

I didn't read the reviews. That's too bad. Oh, well. It's not like we can't get Bangers and Mash the next time we're in London.

Or you could make your own while you are in New York City.

It's easier to go out and get them. We will have to go to Tea and Sympathy for a B&M fix.

I can get them in Sioux City...the bangers are imported from Ireland

A friend was telling me yesterday about what looks like a very cleverly executed case of identity theft against one of his accounts. We don't know for sure yet whether it was intentional or accidental, but in checking into it he discovered a big hole in security procedures. I then called my bank and they verified what my friend discovered. I don't wish to publicize the hole; let's just say that it's much, much easier to steal from someone than most of us would imagine. My friend is quite a cynic and even he didn't think this could be done. The only recourse we've found is to check all your bank and credit card statements regularly and very closely. This was very cleverly disguised.
