SOYLENT PINK - CHAPTER TWO

'Pink Slime' For Lunch: Schools Can Opt Out Of Ammonia-Treated Ground Beef Filler
 (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/15/pink-slime-school-lunch-opt-out_n_1347784.html)

Quote

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced today that it will offer schools an option between two types of ground meat to purchase for student meals. The move is in response to requests from districts amid a weeks-long firestorm of public outcry against the ammonia-treated cow product.

BEEF' ISN'T EXACTLY BEEF
Schools aren't the only ones affected. According to an ABC News investigation, lean finely textured beef is mixed into 70 percent of ground beef sold in supermarkets across the country -- but meat-packers and grocery stores aren't required by law to include "lean finely textured beef" on package labels because the USDA categorizes it as meat.

"They're calling this a meat; it's not. It's connective tissue and it is a much poorer quality protein even if they treat it, however they may treat it, to make it more digestible or more integrated," Sharon Akabas, associate director of Columbia University's Institute of Human Nutrition, told HuffPost.

"It's economic disclosure; it's an economic fraud issue," Zernstein said. "It's really not so much food safety. Put as much ammonia in it as you want. I don't care. Kill it. It still ends up being low quality, but you at least need to label it so much percent lean finely textured beef ... so I can say, 'I'm broke; it's low quality, but I'll buy it because I'm hungry.' The USDA knows better. Their labeling people blew it."

At least Tofu-Jane has no worries.

I hope you enjoy  "7 Brides." It was a favorite when I was a kid. I got to see the touring production with Howard Keel and Jane Powell when it rolled through Louisville way back when. I enjoyed that, too, though even I knew they were a bit long in the tooth by that time. Ah, the magic of wigs and makeup.

CD - The Fuzzy Pink Nightgown....a very fun score....and lots of photos of Jane Russell & Ralph Meeker.

DVD - My Week With Marilyn.....it was okay....and Williams was okay, but there is only ONE Marilyn....and I think the influence of Paula Strasberg was really treated in too light a manner.....the Strasbergs crippled Marilyn's acting....   As Stella Adler said when Lee Strasberg kicked the bucket:  It will take one hundred years to undo the harm he has done.

Good morning, all! I got a lot of sleep last night, which was good and very much needed. I have a lot of errands today to run, beginning at Toyland and working my way north.

We've encountered a problem with the Finale template/files/God-knows-what for the full score of the Act Two Finale of DEAREST ENEMY that concerns me. It will not convert to a pdf file, so it cannot be sent to me to print out. I am most distressed by this turn of events. Six numbers to go and this occurs. This project of rebuilding the score and vocal score is cursed. I hope it doesn't forebode ill for the recording.

I have no other news.

TOD:
DVD: Year of the Carnivores, several operas
CD:  Dearest Enemy (VLOG ootlegbay), ONCE (OBC), Irish pub songs, Guy Haines
  VCR: Three guesses

A librarian friend of mine saw the "new improved" PRGY AND BESS last night and just wrote me:
I don't ever want to see it again.  It's horrible!  Not the performance (which was, typical of today's direction, hyper-kinetic - the characters remade as lower but certainly middle class African Americans, and the revision made it seem like a recital of famous songs with most of the connective plot/character development removed) -

That got me thinking about the opera, and I sent him my thoughts on the piece:
I think the Goldwyn film was smart in setting it further back in time than 1934 - I think the play and novel are from the late 20s - because it deals with a poor uneducated ghetto-ized populace regarded as 3rd class citizens with little to no chance of upward mobility. The further back it's set, it's easier for contemporary black audiences and white audiences to regard it as a period piece about great-great grandparents before the civil rights movement ever improved things. For all I know, the Gullah population of Baltimore was similar to this until the civil rights movement.

Well, DR Elmore, last night's crowd was probably dealers, but today I'm sure today we'll see the kind of clientele you describe.  We also seem to be permanent tenants in our pitiful mall and Nina's youth performing arts center is our neighbor.

I don't think I have ever seen that movie. I couldn't watch the Trevor Nunn TV version because the dubbing was so horrible. I think I stopped it about 20 minutes into it.

Predominantly women, DR John G, and there are a lot of wedding pins.  But there's no "women only" restriction and I think anyone who wants to save a lot of visual content - artists, designers, landscapers, architects, etc. - would find it useful.  There are also a lot of cooking pictures, some of which make me drool and some make me gag.

The Oregonian published a long expose this morning of how they "misreported" the circumstances of the death of their ultra-conservative Editorial Page Editor last week (I mentioned it at the time).  It turns out an Oregonian reporter lied to them (LOL) and they didn't get the police report until the next day.

Listening to a fun 4CD promo released to promote Burt Bacharach's publishing enterprises.  Weird inclusion:  Lani Hall's version of "Love Song", the only non-Bacharach tune here (it's the Lesley Duncan tune that Elton John recorded).  I searched on ASCAP and saw it's administered by Hal David's LLP publishing entity (not very far from BK's home environment on Ventura Blvd.), which is kind of funny since it's a Bacharach promo.

I much preferred a cartoon I saw a day or two ago with St. Patrick driving a car filled with snakes. He's exasperated because all of the snakes were whining and saying things like, "Are we there yet?" and "When's the next bathroom break?" And the tag was something like, "St. Patrick drives the snakes out of Ireland."

After all, St. Pat could have treated those snakes like Shamus and strapped them to the top of the car.

I first learned about Pinterest from a story on Queen Ann (Romney), who posted on there that "Anna Karenina" was one of her favorite books. Rather strange, I thought, since one of the storylines is about how women should be in charge of their own bodies regarding conception and the use of birth control.  Or at least Anna thought so.

Anyway, the story also described Pinterest as being something women were flocking to. I don't need another form of social media in my life, so I left it alone.

Quote
Although she met the height and weight requirements for the "Techno Jump ride" at RodeoHouston on Wednesday, a 3-year-old was thrown from her seat once the ride began, KHOU TV reports.

According to the station, the girl's mother reportedly decided she didn't want to ride along moments before it began-- and left her daughter strapped in with her brother.
Despite the lap bar and restraining belt, the girl slipped out of the moving chair and fell to the ride's platform -- suffering a contusion on the side of her head and abrasions, the station reports. Luckily a CAT scan and X-ray at the Texas Children's Hospital revealed no serious injuries.

Well, this is a no brainer –SUE THE RODEO OPERATORS!

They were clearly negligent in not posting a large bill board at the park entrance , another at the ticket booth, and a third at the ride entrance that clearly states:

RESPONSIBLE PARENTING ENCOURAGED:

Since I am still living in the 20th Century (and will be until the arrival of my Smart Phone from Danise), I have a question for all of you, techies.  There is a commercial that seems to play repeatedly.  It shows a woman and her daughter sitting of the floor talking about the daughter being cast as a tree in the school play.  Part way through the commercial, it shifts to show the mother is on an airplane, but still talking to her daughter.  The commercial is for American Airlines. It leaves me with the impression that American Airlines is somehow unique in their technical abilities.

Is that so, or can you do the same thing on most airlines?

Just finished "Murder at the HHS" - the kindle version.  Even though I own the hardcover, I guess I can't read books anymore, go figure.  I purchased "Murder at the Masquers" - the kindle version today, even though I have the hardback.  So, bk... two royalties from me.

When I got my Kindle last year, the first books that I bought were the three Benjamin Krizter books.  I'm still going to buy "real" (made of paper) books, but I've gotten quite a few public domain and inexpensive titles for my Kindle.

Hi all.  I'm just popping in and out real quick because I am so very tired tonight.  Last night I couldn't sleep at all and now I can't keep my eyes open.  I think all the excitement is catching up with me.    I stopped off at walmart and found a monkey toy for the dogs.  Toby is just in love it.  He took it outside right away and now is laying on the couch with it.  I guess I'm going to have to go back and buy one for Sheena.

Have a good evening all!

Thank you DR Ginny.  I don't know why I added the h to Case, not a good thing to be doing.  I'm very excited he has such a great residency & think it is better than the ones in Chicago he had hoped for.

What can you tell me about Cleveland, that isn't "so" bad?  Bryan hasn't a clue yet where to live.  Are there even areas where he can walk to the shops, etc. that are conveniently located to the hospital & hopefully in a nice area.  He did a quick search on Craig's list & said the rents seem reasonable.  They will have two apartments to maintain now plus he has to begin paying back student loans soon.  Kate has two or three years of school left.

Thanks DR Jennifer.  We don't know yet.  She has one year in Chicago & a second year someplace in Europe (?).  I think in the 3rd year she can be with him, with trips back to Chicago if she is still finishing up her PHD.  I don't remember when she is done.

This matching for residencies is somewhat confusing.  Bryan received a letter from a program in Chicago that he was their number one pick, out of 2 positions.  A friend of his received an identical letter.  Bryan placed that program 4th on his list while his friend put it at the top figuring it was a safe bet.  Neither of them were matched to that program & Bryan's poor friend didn't receive a match at all.  I don't know how that is possible if you & the program both put you at number one.

Bryan sent a letter to his number one pick in Chicago letting them know he was doing this.  They sent back a very nice letter basically saying "we will see you in July"  ???

DR Jane, I don't know enough about Cleveland to answer your questions, but it seems to me that the University Circle area is pretty nice.  I've been to the Playhouse Square area frequently on business at the Cleveland outpost of DR Ben's employer.  Mostly I've stayed out in the 'burbs, probably not where Bryan wants to live.

Is that so, or can you do the same thing on most airlines?

no  - only American Airlines has the Star Trek Transport Technology
