Well, you've read the notes, the notes were rainy, and now it is time for you to post until the rainy cows come home.

Breakfast:

My grown-up version of PB&J

Toasted Challah
Skippy Toasted Honey Nut Creamy Peanut Butter
Dickenson’s Seedless Black Raspberry Preserves

(Long gone are the Wonder Bread, Peter Pan, Welsh’s Grape Jelly days of my youth!)

DR Jane might approve.

der Brucer

This is my “Premium” PB&J

The everyday version would be toasted sourdough or whole wheat bread with lo-Fat Skippy Peanut Butter, and Smucker’s Seedless Red Raspberry Preserves

Lately, my PB&J's have been made with JIF and strawberry preserves.

I LOVE strawberry preserves on toasted muffins.

I prefer Welch's grape jelly on my PB&J's, though.  It's how I was first introduced to them.  And the jelly came in Howdy Doody glasses.  I had one for Howdy, Clarabelle and Mayor Bluster, IIRC.

It's early for me.  It's because even though my mattress warmer was on and my fleece blanket was warm I felt cold air.  That comes from keeping the thermostat on 60.  Yesterday's storm front was blown away overnight by a mass of cold air.

I got up to turn up the thermostat and realized I was more than "normally" congested.  Then I realized I had a scratchy throat.

So it was off to the kitchen where I made myself a cup of peppermint tea (Trader Joe's brand...the BEST I've ever tasted).  I'm feeling better, and I'm halfway through my tea and posting here.

The last time I was up this early posting, DR JoseSPiano was posting.  I now note it has been a while since I've seen post by Jose.

I looked it up and February 10 was the last day he posted.  That was 36 days ago.

It seems I'm destined to be more a "Guest" and less a "Poster".

While Woody is hogging taking his fair share of time at the computer, I've taken to brousing HHW.

The problem is that HHW is unintentionally Smarrt Phone hostile.
The problem lies in both lay-out and man-machine interface.

Problems:

The left-side containing the poster data (avatar, stats, etc) eats up a lot of the post area; when you scroll right to see more test you lose the ID of the poster - and even in landscape mode with the screen scrolled right to chop off the User data, there are still many messages that run-off screen (Sites that have Mbile versions either have smaller margins are provide automatic text wrappinbg based on viewing area. Think of the Smart-Phone viewing experincing just like when HHW is driven into CinemaScope.

To execute page jumps, one must scroll eith all the way up or all the way down, then greatly enlarge the viewing area until the page numbers are large enough to press-select.

When trying to respond with quote, one is presented with a very small window in which to edit (remember, over half the Smart-Phone Screen is taken up by the keyboard display when posting.

None of these problems are insurmountable - they just add up to a very cumbersome interaction.

der Brucer

On the plus side - the posted photos are gorgeous in Smart-Phone HDTV resolution!

Ah, yes, the '50s version of recycling! Our kitchen cupboards were filled with Jelly glasses of various types, and our local dairy delivered Cottage Cheese in reusable colored aluminum water tumblers.

My mother's sprinkle bottle was always a soda bottle with a speinkle-cork installed.

And there was always the cardboard box filled with Mason Jars waiting for the summer canning season.

der Brucer

Note to young-uns - sprinkle-bottles were from the world of clothes lines and their associated pins and props (clothes poles). My well-to-do Godmother had her own home mangle!

Yesterday there was a Van Williams- Bruce Lee GREEN HORNET marathon on ME Tv.   I watched several episodes when I got home from work.  Very enjoyable show - particularly because of the two leads.....

Wende Wagner played Britt Reid's secretary, and she was very capable....AND beautiful.  IMDB says that she was an accomplished underwater swimmer and started her career as a stunt double in television and films....including doubling for Lloyd Bridges in SEA HUNT.

Married first to stuntman Courtney Brown and then to James Mitchum....she quit show business and moved back to the Bahamas....and passed away suffering from cancer at age 56.

I kept thinking I had seen her in something before.....she played Rosemary's girlfriend in ROSEMARY'S BABY.

vixmom Quote " jelly is what we know as jello or gelatin here - Doug it is a peanut buttter and what you ight call "jam" sandwich - traditionally here we use grape - what we call jam I think you call preserves"

That explains a lot. My idea of jelly is what you know as jello, which would make very soggy sandwiches! In Britain preserves and jam are the same thing.

I was watching "Paris When it Sizzles" which I had never seen before. What a total misfire! Audrey Hepburn and William Holden can usually do no wrong for me but they were saddled with an appalling, stupid script and William Holden in particular seemed completely miscast and over-forced the comedy.

Good morning, all! I slept very late.

I'm in a quandary at the moment over a 30-year friendship's falling apart badly, and that has me rather depressed. I don't know if at this point it's salvageable. and a major part of the problem is my own stubbornness. I've been slapped once too often in the past year and a half to want to forgive and make amends. It's eating at me, though.

Today, I have to locate in this apartment some Jerome Moross scores for another project, proof a couple of full scores for DEAREST ENEMY. and weed out some iTunes files.

Well, my unsolicited opinion is that a 30 year friendship is certainly worth the "forgiving" - the nature of amends needs further thought.

With luck, a 30 year friendship will welcome the "forgiving" and forego the "amends".
That friend is suely aware that your "stubborness" is part of the package.

Some ( I hope) relatively non-political musings on Health Care Reform
News report today:

Quote
Death, taxes and now health insurance? Having a medical plan or else paying a fine is about to become another certainty of American life, unless the Supreme Court says no.
People are split over the wisdom of President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, but they are nearly united against its requirement that everybody have insurance.
No one seems willing to embrace the whole problem and develop a set of integrated solutions.

As long as we have a medical system that by judicial fiat or medical practice delivers services to those unwilling/unable to pay, those of us with Health Insurance will be picking up the tab. One way or another, Health Care providers must meet costs! Anytime a patient does not pay the full cost of his care (either because he is an uninsured indigent or his provider pays less than true cost - Like some Medicare and virtually all Medicaid - or hard-boiled Insurance Companies that negotiated tight contracts, the “lost” costs are recovered from the deeper pockets (The Insurance companies who than pass these costs along as higher premiums).

The above results in a convoluted system of cost accounting that is hostile to attempts by others to instigate cost control/containment measures.

The system needs changes that enable providers to bill true coasts – any costs not reimbursed from patients and their coverers should be reimbursed from a Federal Fund established for that purpose. (how that fund is financed is a separate issue).

Address the un-reimbursed care problem. Clearly codify what services hospitals are required o provide indigent/un-insured patients. County Hospital in LA was providing free dental care as part of their Emergency Unreimbursed care. In many Hospitals, walk-in indigents get more extensive treatment then do patients with chintzy health plans. Is there no reason we can not treat the “needy” in 12 bed wards rather than private or Semi-private rooms?

Bring the issue of Healthcare Rationing out of the closet and deal with it.
We already have Healthcare rationing – read your Insurance Policy!
12-month waiting lists are a form of rationing.
Transplant waiting lists are a form of rationing

Non-Formulary prescription drug denial is a form of rationing.
There are neither the physical assets nor the funds to provide “the best Health Care money can buy” to everyone who presents themselves for treatment.

Aggregate data to provide a complete picture of the problem:
Assuming everyone is “covered” what services will be provided that are not now being provided? (It’s nonsense to look at “who will be covered” who is not currently covered when many of the “not currently covered” are still receiving treatment.

Evaluate the current Medical Delivery system to ascertain what will be the future needs based on universal coverage and set plans in place to provide it. Where is the master chart that shows all current physicians, by specialty, projected need for all physicians by specialty, and training programs to meet those needs.

Do the above for non-MD Health workers and facilities (hospitals, rehabs, labs, etc.)

Since the issue of Mandatory Insurance seems argumentative, I suggest we take a Medicare-like approach:

Determine the cost of a minimum approved Health Care plan; devise a payroll tax to collect that amount; and provide for a short-form tax credit for anyone who has qualified insurance (purchased or employer provided) – dedicate these funds to the fund discussed above for unreimbursed hospital costs.

(I would prefer a consumption tax rather than a wage tax, but that’s a different story).
I am still waiting for the Government to define a minimum acceptable Health Insurance policy (one that will be listed on the soon to be exchanges.

Whatever these requirements are become the minimum acceptable employer provided health plans. (We obviously won’t let an employer get away with a plan that has a $9000/year deductable , 90% co-pays, and does not cover heart or liver problems – so we need to define what is the minimum acceptable plan). We’ve already seen the problem with mandating inclusion of birth-control – imagine how many other pitfalls lay ahead – alternative medicine, chiropractors, experimental treatments, etc

It’s sure tough to argue details of solutions when we can not agree on the details of the problem.

Definitely NOT the sales technique.  I can see them having an exclusive on a title that folks will be clamoring for.  But, honestly....the Clifton Webb "Titanic"?   Is Best Buy desperate for those of us who would ONLY go there for this one DVD?

I know...they had an exclusive on that Universal set that included "The Incredible Shrinking Man."  Thank goodness I had it on a DVD-R.

A thought I had about it centers around Fox Home Video's new arrangement with Screen Archives Entertainment.  SAE has, apparently, an "exclusive" deal with Fox to issue Blu-rays of vault titles, starting with "The Grapes of Wrath" and "Zorba the Greek".  There's a "chance" that "Titanic" may have been moved into that batch that SAE will issue over the coming months.

As long as the BD isn't being cancelled, I don't care which it is.

What's odd about the Best Buy exclusives is that some of them are only for a week or two while others stretch on for months.  They also don't seem to do a very good job of advertising their exclusives--we find out about them rather late as a matter of course.

Thank you for the advice. I'm notsure how this will go down, and I've been carrying this feeling about the friendship falling apart since mid-January. My initial response is to say, screw you, consider him no longer a friend and go on. It took me years to disown the Macbeths - which I did not want to do - but whichproved one of the smartest things i've done. Oy!

On a happier note, ONCE opens tonight, and I have no idea what its reviews will be like. If you're buying the CD, I suggest going to Barnes & Noble for their "special edition," which includes the Czech number and David Patrick Kelly's wonderful rendition of "Raglan Road" that ends the cast's onstage warmup before the show actually begins. Yep, curtain time may be 8:00 but around 7:40 the fun begins.

And goddaughter Charlotte is back safe and sound from two weeks in Equador, visting a friend.

I definitely approve.  IMHO the lo-fat Skippy isn't any better for you than the regular.  I believe it has equal amount of calories & more sugar.  The fat isn't trans-fat.

Well, I finally got the sleep I've been craving - ten hours of it.  Man, that felt GOOD.  I'm up now.  As to Jose, I saw him twice, both times he said he'd post and he hasn't.  He hasn't even responded to an e-mail I sent him asking an unrelated question.  As I've said frequently, there are times I simply don't understand people, but that's just me, I suppose.

Yes, it seems that A Man and a Woman should have all been left in bloody English - the 'un' 'une' is my stupidity for just copying what was written on the tape boxes, where it was un.  Either that or I was just blind to the "e" which is doubtful.  Oh, well - stuff happens.

My mother liked her English preserves.  I don't even remember eating grape jelly at home.  The only jelly I've ever liked was Smuckers mixed berry.  Knotts had a good plum preserve or jam, can't remember & it was discontinued years & years ago.

None of these problems are insurmountable - they just add up to a very cumbersome interaction.

vixmom Quote " jelly is what we know as jello or gelatin here - Doug it is a peanut buttter and what you ight call "jam" sandwich - traditionally here we use grape - what we call jam I think you call preserves"

That explains a lot. My idea of jelly is what you know as jello, which would make very soggy sandwiches! In Britain preserves and jam are the same thing.

No wonder the thought of jelly sandwiches made you laugh.

Robertson's sells both jam & preserves.  I always found preserves to be thicker than jam with more of the seeds of the fruit.  Their marmalade was my mother's favorite.

I still have a couple of Golliwog pins.  I'm sorry most of them were lost during moves.  I have a couple of knitted Golliwog dolls my mother made.

I was watching "Paris When it Sizzles" which I had never seen before. What a total misfire! Audrey Hepburn and William Holden can usually do no wrong for me but they were saddled with an appalling, stupid script and William Holden in particular seemed completely miscast and over-forced the comedy.

Yup, it was a bit silly.

Sunday afternoon greetings!  We are back from Lima, where I caused a little commotion.  After the service and coffee hour, Fr. Richard and the mission committee had a meeting and I was sitting in the lobby reading my book.  The woman who'd hosted coffee hour today was cleaning up in the kitchen and called for me to help her get the top off the coffee pot.  As I charged across the fellowship hall, my heel hit a slippery tile and I went down, crashing into the furniture on my way.  I'm sure it sounded worse than it was and I wouldn't let Judy interrupt the meeting.  My left arm took the brunt and I have bruises developing on my upper arm, forearm, wrist, and pinkie.  I may have our family doctor check me out tomorrow, just to be on the safe side.

Other than that, it was a delightfully smooth trip up and back...

I just listened to Side One of Tony Sings The Great Hits of Today, the album that evidently made Mr. Bennett vomit on the floor before the recording sessions.  I'm not sure I have the fortitude to make it to Side Two.  Despite some nice (if at times odd) arrangements by Peter Matz, something was definitely off here.

I believe I may have an answer, though I haven't gotten confirmation yet.  Our listing has a click-through only to Best Buy.  When that happens, that typically means it's a Best Buy exclusive for some time (actually for months on some occasions), before the title is released to other retailers.

Ahhh.....it all begins to make sense now.....well the scenario NOT the sales technique.

Perhaps, King of the World Cameron has some strange contract that will not allow the sale of any other film titled TITANIC, while his 3D version is being released?

Profits AT the Pump

Quote
...

From New York to Philadelphia, refineries that turn oil into gasoline have been idled or shut permanently because their owners are losing money on them. Sunoco Inc. is expected to close the region's largest refinery in July, taking another 335,000 barrels per day in production capacity off the market.

The East Coast refineries are getting squeezed by the soaring cost of crude oil, the major component in gasoline. The cost of oil has jumped in the past year due to global economic growth and rising tensions between Western nations and Iran, a major producer. Refineries haven't been able to increase their own prices enough to compensate.

...

So now gasoline will get even more expensive!

Had some lunch.  As always on Sunday every restaurant in Studio City has lines out the door.  I guess the days of home-cooked Sunday meals for the family are a thing of the past.  Thankfully, I got into Art's Deli right away and had a tri-salad - two scoops of turkey salad, one scoop egg salad, a scoop each of potato salad and cole slaw and some rye bread.  Very good.

Good heavens is this morning's paper full of THE HUNGER GAMES.  Betsy and Zach are going to the midnight premiere this week with a gaggle of Zach's school friends and his English teacher.

I am dying to see this movie. But I don't know how well i'd do at a midnight showing. I know a lot of people are doing that.  I think I am going to wait a few days and go on the Tuesday, since I don't really love crowds.

Let's hope by Thursday your past the "My God, Ginny, what happend to you?" stage.

My book group friends are so used to seeing me bruised I doubt they'll even notice.  One is a retired physician and 2 are nurses, so I'm in pretty good hands when we're together.

If they get excited you should be worried. ;)

 WASHINGTON POST  (http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/dream-big-as-long-as-you-fit-the-right-demographic/2012/02/28/gIQAxHfb1R_story.html)

Quote
Smash’: Dream big, as long as you fit the right demographic
By Jessica Goldstein, Published: March 9

Unless your definition of minorities includes “redheads” and “people with accents,” you’d have a rough time finding many in the cast of NBC’s “Smash,” a drama about the goings-on behind the scenes of a Broadway musical in the making.

There is a half-Puerto Rican actor who plays a disgruntled assistant. Dev, the boyfriend of Katharine McPhee’s character, hails from England and is of Indian descent. And, as far as series regulars go, that’s it.

Technically speaking, there are a handful of minorities who pop up in the ensemble or as Friend No. 3, and the invisible baby Debra Messing’s character will never actually adopt is Chinese. (No work-life balance allowed for women on TV; don’t want to give us any ideas.)

But wait, there is hope! There is hope because settled inside “Smash” like a Russian nesting doll is a musical-within-the-show. This musical could be where all the interesting, complicated, exciting parts for, say, African-Americans are hiding. This diverse portion of the cast will be revealed as soon as we get done watching the blond girl flirt with a Jonas brother and have sex with the blondish guy.

Oh, wait. It turns out, the focus of this original musical is Marilyn Monroe. I use the term “original” here to mean “there will be songs that haven’t been written before,” not to suggest that creating a narrative around Marilyn Monroe is an even remotely original idea, because come on.
Marilyn the Musical! Get excited to watch two white girls duke it out for the Role Of A Lifetime! It’s cool though, because one is a brunette.

After that, a trio of white men will audition to be Marilyn’s three most famous love interests: Joe DiMaggio, Arthur Miller and JFK. We are looking at a show set to be even less diverse than the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

If the “Smash” folks were so set on making a nostalgia-fueled musical, why not create a show about Motown instead? “Hairspray” and “Dreamgirls” were both ( . . .wait for it) smash hits in theaters and on film. Motown provides ample opportunities for diverse casting, not to mention that it would allow the cover songs featured in every episode to be thematically relevant. This would save us all from watching McPhee attempt to jam the square peg of “Redneck Woman” into the round hole of a karaoke bar in Iowa.

And, should the wildest hopes of the “Smash” production team be realized and the musical-within-a-show become a real-life musical, there would be that many more leading roles for non-white actors on Broadway. As “Smash” would encourage us: Dream big, people.

Whoa...wait just a minute.

Quote

So for diversity let's create a show about two shows written by (...wait for it... ) white men!

Note: two of those white men are writing SMASH!

I am back from Shrek the musical.  People really don't know at what age to bring kids to the theatre. I get that it can be a tough call. My sister did not even consider bringing my almost 3 year old niece.

Nobody brought kids under 2. But there were quite a few 3 and 4 year olds. And really they are much too young.

We had great seats (9th row). And there ended up being a little kid sitting in front of me. But half way thru the first act he wanted to go. I get that his parents paid $150+ dollars for tix. So they put him in their lap. But left after the intermission.

Many of the younger kids did not really seem to be able to sit. My 6 year old niece loved it and was cackling so hard. I had no idea her laugh was so distinctive.

I definitely enjoyed it. Especially because I have not been to any musical theatre in quite a while.

I guess the days of home-cooked Sunday meals for the family are a thing of the past.

Many of those went away when Mom started commuting an hour or more a day to a forty plus hour job.

Many working Moms would rather treat the Family to a nice Sunday dinner-out after church than to be busy in the kitchen while Dad watches football.

I was wondering why anyone would take a 2-4 year old to the theatre. My mom figured it was because the parents knew that this was the only time the show would play here. And so they probably thought their child could handle it.

I don't think that many kids left. But i could hear the girl behind me saying she was bored and she was asking if it was over. And like i said the kid in front of me left.

It is a kids show. But i don't think kids under 5 would really be able to handle it (being quiet, not fidgeting, not being bored).

June 17th: It seems everyone who has seen ONCE loves it.  Is this play based on the movie?  Keith & I didn't like the movie at all & especially didn't enjoy the music.

June 18th: I'm surprised on DR JMK responded to my question regarding ONCE.

Jane, I'm responding so you don't think we're ignoring you.

Yes, the musical Once, opening tonight on Broadway, is based on the movie. If you didn't like the movie you won't like the musical. They made some minor changes to the story which make it more theatrical and they added two new songs but, basically, the movie has been transformed to a stage musical.

I think Celtic/Folk/Roots music can be an acquired taste. That being said, I think the music in the movie and on stage added to the beauty of both pieces.

I respect the fact that you didn't like the movie. You're not the only one (or you and JMK are not the only ones) but it has garnered more praise than dislikes. It isn't a matter of right or wrong. That kind of response is rude and, I feel, useless. I liked it. You didn't like it. As BK says often, that's the horse race (or something like that). I've had the idea that I'm wrong because I didn't like something, or "I'm sorry you didn't get it" thrown at me too many times to buy the argument. It's art. Many people have different feelings and interpretations of art. It's not a one size fits all affair.

I don't know that there is much more to say about it. Again, I'm perfectly fine with you not liking the movie. There are MANY movies that people here adore which I can't sit through (The Court Jester being one, the pestle sequence makes me run screaming from the room). I just chalk it up to my eclectic tastes  :D

The reason I'm asking is I didn't realize they were the same & wanted to see the musical, not to be critical of anyone who likes the movie.   It may just be I didn't like the singing voice of the lead in the movie since I don't think I'm anti Celtic music.  I really wanted a comparison of the two, to know if not liking the movie didn't mean I wouldn't like the play.  Thank you for responding.  From your response it appears chances are strong I would feel the same about the Broadway musical as I did about the movie.

I bought the regular CD from Amazon and got the iTunes bonus track, "Chandler's Wife" from iTunes.  I was able to get the two B&N tracks (don't ask ;)), so I have all three.

Many of the younger kids did not really seem to be able to sit.

Then again I suspect there were some who sat still - enthralled by the whole experience (but they would probably go unnoticed). My four year old grandson was better behaved during Lion King then were some of the adults - he talked to no one, had no cell phone, and had no candies to unwrap. There was no question about taking him - you can’t take  the 7 years old and leave the 5 year old behind because he might not behave; you take the five year old and are prepared for a parent to take him to the lobby if he has trouble with theatre manners.

If you know your child can do it then fine. Also if you are prepared to take your child to the lobby if there is a problem that is also fine. But almost every kid i noticed who had a problem was not taken out during the show. Even the family in front of me who left at intrmission. They should have taken him out during the first half. He was disruptive. I do think it is possible to take only one of your kids to a show if you do not think the younger one can handle it. My almost 3 year old niece did not go. And when The Lion King was here a friend took her 5 year old but not her 3year old. I do think that thease types of shows are a good place to get kids first interested in theatre. But the kids have to be ready. I just think that many kids under five are too young.

DR Cillaliz do you have any Nook friends you lend books back & forth with?  I just borrowed a book from DR TD.  I'm trying to figure out how to invite you as a Nook friend from my computer vs the Nook.  Are you interested?

A few photos from South by Southwest. A night bloomer amid some gallardias.

This is datura. I have this in my backyard. Last summer I posted on youtube a short video of the flower opening.

I don't know how many varieties of datura there are in the southwest. I would call this sacred datura, datura wrightii.
Thank you, Laura. I remember that video. It was wonderful.

Made lamb tonight for an early seder service with my church group. And a flourless chocolate cake. Both came out quite well. And the abbreviated service was nice.  I just couldn't get the rest of my group used to two things: A) You have to wait before you can drink the wine; B) no dairy with the meat. So, we broke the rules at little and had creamy horseradish. And we had a little more than four glasses of wine. And we were good.

Sure!  Most people I know have Kindles, so I haven't shared with anyone.  It would be great. I don't know how to do it, though

Good to see that the New York Times redid its review of "Once" and liked the show more now. I, too, had friends who hated the movie and I would steer them clear of the stage version. But I surprisingly enjoyed the movie. The music is not my style at all, but I was bowled over by "Falling Softly." And I enjoyed the rest of the movie soundtrack. Looking forward to getting the cast recording.

Watching "Fatal Attraction" for the first time from start to finish. The script is horribly cliched, but Glenn Close is better than I thought and Michael Douglas is his usual sleazy self. I feel no sympathy for him.

I have a jury trial starting on Tuesday.  It's terribly over charged and the penalty is extreme if we lose.  So I could use some vibes here.  We have our last pretrial conference in the morning.  I'm ready for it and for trial.  Not expected to last long.  When it's done I'll have more time to stop by

The next time my arm and hand are tigly, I will die becuaw I will never waste six hours of my life waiting around an ER for things to happen. I had a very pretty and wonderful doctor who would check out things, ask  questions, and then vanish for long periods of time. Around 5:30, i had an EKG, byy 7:00pm, it was determined it was no heart attack, but blood was drawn to check electrolytes and blood levels. They wanted me to have a brain scan but I wasn't interested in waiting around the rest of the night. Around 9, I started getting antsy, and a very nice male nurse at my request found my doctor, and she told me that the bloodwork looked good and as soon as the tests were all in, I could go. Three hours later, i was told my tests were great and then I waited annother 40 minutes to be dismissed.

That was my evening. I am in good health. so WTF?

DR George, I just purchased "Chandler's Wife" from the iTunes store. It's another one of the warm up songs, along with "Raglan Road." I'm happy that at least two of them got recorded.

So, "Chandler's Wife" and "Raglan Road" are both pre-show music.  Do you any idea where "Este Si Ja Pohar Vina Zaplatim" might fit in the score?  Or if it was cut or used in the movie?  Inquiring minds want to know!

See the bottom of this "review" for a complete musical sequence.DR Ben, I don't agree with you about the movie and the musical; i think the musical is an imaginative revision and not an attempt to put the film onstage: the songs are in different places, the cast iis utilized more imaginatively. I wish more movie adaptations treated the films they're based on so loosely rather than try to present the movie onstage.

I believe I am one of two HHW-ers who actually saw THE GOOD OLD BAD OLD DAYS.  The other was former DR Tomovoz.  I asked BK about it a long time ago and I thought he said that EMI didn't have the paperwork, so I'm thrilled it's being released.  For any of you who haven't heard it, it has some really pretty Newley-Bricusse ballads in it.  The night I saw it the theater was about 1/3 full, so I simply moved right up to an orchestra seat and was within a few feet of the inimitable Mr. Newley.

When I went back years later and looked at my diary of that European summer, I was somewhat aghast to see that I had been considering seeing Angela Lansbury in GYPSY that night in London, but decided on Newley instead.

That was the same summer I went to NYC and saw PIPPIN and A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, and my thought after seeing GOBOD was that someone had seen PIPPIN and was trying to do something that fantastically theatrical, but didn't quite have the mojo to pull it off.  Tony played the Devil and Paul Douglas was G-d, who was thinking of destroying the world.  The Devil wants the world to be saved so that he can continue wreaking havoc.

There were a couple of questionable moments in the show, including a number in blackface and another burlesque type thing that presaged ASSASSINS and had bullseye laden posters of victims like JFK and RFK being turned on turnstiles to face the audience.
