Well, you've read the notes, the notes were happy and posted on a Monday, and now it is time for you to post until the happy Monday cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ELAN!
-
As promised, here are the two new Kritzerland releases - if you desire them, just go to the website to order - they'll be "live" at six.
THE BARBARIAN AND THE GEISHA and VIOLENT SATURDAY
Music Composed by Hugo Friedhofer
Based on a story by Ellis St. John, 1958’s The Barbarian and the Geisha recounts the story of Townsend Harris, who arrives in Japan in the 1850s as the first American to serve as Consul-General to Japan, and who was a key figure in opening relations between Japan and America. The film stars John Wayne, and is directed by John Huston. Much of it shot on location, the film is beautiful to look at and features Twentieth Century Fox’s usual top-notch production values.
One of The Barbarian and the Geisha’s strongest elements is its absolutely stunning score by Hugo Friedhofer. By that point, Friedhofer had already written several masterpieces, including The Best Years of Our Lives, The Bishop’s Wife, and, at Fox, such glorious scores as An Affair to Remember, The Boy on a Dolphin, The Rains of Ranchipur, Soldier of Fortune, Seven Cities of Gold, The Revolt of Mamie Stover, Between Heaven and Hell, and, the same year as Barbarian, The Young Lions.
Friedhofer’s score for The Barbarian and the Geisha manages to have Oriental color while remaining tonal in a completely American way. It’s a thing of sublime beauty and one of his best scores. His main theme is heartbreakingly beautiful and is repeated many times throughout the score, and the rest of his music complements and enriches every scene in the film – this is Golden Age movie music the way we remember Golden Age movie music – melodic, dramatic, tender, suspenseful, and evoking a different time and place through orchestral color and knowing how the orchestra can be utilized to also evoke Oriental textures without resorting to triteness.
Violent Saturday, based on the novel by W. L. Heath, was made three years earlier and is a taut and suspenseful film about a small-town robbery. Almost fifty after its release, it’s considered a classic (the DVD was recently released by Twilight Time and is a must-have), with terrific performances from Richard Egan, Lee Marvin, Ernest Borgnine, and the large cast, excellent writing (screenplay by Sidney Boehm, who wrote the screenplay for the noir classic, The Big Heat), and great direction from Richard Fleischer,
Hugo Friedhofer’s score for Violent Saturday is perfection and a textbook example of how and when to use music. All told, the score is only about twenty minutes long, but it’s the perfect amount of music for this film. It does exactly what film music is supposed to do – propels the film, underscores the scenes that need it, and stays out of the way when music would serve no purpose. There are no classic Friedhofer themes to be found – just music that functions sometimes as subtext, sometimes as suspense, and sometimes as violent as the goings on in Violent Saturday.
Both The Barbarian and the Geisha and Violent Saturday had previous CD releases on Intrada, both long out of print and instant sellouts. The Barbarian and the Geisha was a standalone CD and Violent Saturday played second feature to Warlock by Leigh Harline. It’s great to be able to couple the two Friedhofer scores together, and make them available to those who may have missed out on the prior releases, or who’d like to have these two scores together on one CD. This release has been newly-remastered by James Nelson.
THE GOOD OLD BAD OLD DAYS
Original Cast Recording
Music and Lyrics by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley
On July 20, 1961, a new musical opened at the Queen’s Theatre in England. The musical was called Stop the World, I Want to Get Off, and was co-written, directed by, and starred Anthony Newley. The show was a smash, went to Broadway and Newley became an instant superstar. From there it was more shows (Roar of the Greasepaint, Smell of the Crowd), films, as writer, director, and actor, sometimes all three at once (Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness, Willy Wonka, Doctor Dolittle), TV (tons of guest shots on every variety show of the era), and concerts all over the world.
In 1971, while on tour doing concert dates, Newley and Bricusse began work on a new original musical entitled It’s a Funny Old World We Live In – But the World’s Not Entirely to Blame, a musical that Bricusse described as “a modst little saga about Man, Life, Death, God and The Devil, with the history of the world thrown in.” The show got as far as pre-production in New York at the end of that year. But then producer James Nederlander got cold feet and pulled out. Original Stop the World West End producer Bernard Delfont came to the rescue and the show, sporting a new title, The Good Old Bad Old Days, was slated for a short tour then a West End opening in December of 1972.
The reviews were lukewarm – some were okay, and some were blistering, however Newley the performer was well received by almost all the reviewers. The show would hang on for nine months. Being a Newley and Bricusse score, of course it abounds with catchy melodies and some genuinely good songs. Listening to the score forty years later, divorced from the show itself, the score is very pleasing to hear, and the performances are wonderful.
The Good Old Bad Old Days was released on LP on EMI in the UK. This is its first CD release.
Both CDs are limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98 plus shipping for each.
CDs will ship by the first week of May – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early). To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Sorry to have been E&T again, but my Mim is in the hospital again. Her atrial fibulation is acting up keeping her heart rate too high. When they use drugs, her blood pressure drops too low. Plus she has a touch of pneumonia and she's not eating as she should. This morning they are going to determine if she can go through a procedure called ablation which would shock her heart back into the proper rhythm. Please send some vibes her way.

Good morning, all! I wasn't in bed before 1am, so I slept late (for me). I'm still tired, but I am washed up, dressed, and on my first cup of coffee. I have to make the bed, tidy the apartment and vacuum before I tackle the Intermezzo from DEAREST ENEMY. Five numbers to go!
I posted these clips from ONCE several weeks ago, but after its reviews, it's time to post them again.

The Chicago Tribune's fantastic review has some great things about the adaptation:
But this is no traditional screen-to-stage adaptation. Rather, it's a textbook example of how to do it right: Chapter 1 being, forget most of the movie and build a show. Along with director John Tiffany and movement artist Steven Hoggett (whose unusual work is this show's most potent emotional weapon; you should see the moment when a mother wraps around a distressed soul with her body, as if she were a piece of clothing), Walsh understands that you don't need all the clutter of short scenes, merely the essence of the story that will allow human actors to forge a direct, live connection. Everything you see, hear and feel is inherently theatrical — literality drops away like Dublin street noise as you head to an undiscovered country, and you start to feel things that the movie simply could not make you feel. The characters deepen, and their dilemmas seem to pulse directly to you.

As I continue my "Company" fixation and class this semester, here's an audio clip (no video) of Dean Jones singing "Happily Ever After" before "Being Alive" replaced it. I always liked this song and think even more of it now. It's too much to take in in one or even three hearings, so I can understand why it flopped. But, boy, does Jones knock it out of the park.

Elmore's adventure at the ER yesterday reminded me of a few years ago when I broke my ankle and a neighbor dropped me off at the closest hospital's ER, which turned out to also be a Methadone dispensing clinic. With the perfect logic of an ER, they were dispensing Methadone first to each and everyone who walked in while letting the rest of us rot in a corner. I waited for about an hour, called Betsy and told her I couldn't stand it any longer, to bundle the kids up and come get me to take me to a better hospital. I went and told the ER admitting nurse I was leaving, which made her very upset and she yelled at me, "All right, but I'm marking you down for eloping triage." I burst out into hysterical laughter. Eloping triage has become one of our favorite terms Chez K.

Another Good Old Bad Old Days memory: It must have been the next year after I had seen the show, and I was asked by the debate coach of my high school to come on a debate meet in Tempe, Arizona, despite the fact that I wasn't on the debate team. She wanted me to give some sort of "Persuasive Speech", which I wrote about the then-recent obscenity trials regarding "Carnal Knowledge." I was verklempt--as many of you know, my love for Sergio's music is fairly unbounded. But anyhoo I went to Tempe. Sondheim on Sondheim
(https://www.roundabouttheatre.org/upstage/lecture_sondheim.pdf)
...
Peter Filichia: This was really fun for me; it was like a time machine. Since 1965, I’ve seen every original cast of every Sondheim show. What was really exciting was growing up in
Boston because many of the shows were tried out there, so the memories really came flooding
back today. Especially when the song “Happily Ever After” was being sung because I was there
the first night of Company in Boston. There was Dean Jones singing that song, and while he was singing I saw his eyes widen, as if he were saying, “Oh my God, they hate this song. They hate me. I have got to get out of this show.” And he did. He quit the show.
I swear this is a true story: about thirty years later, I was asked to go down and do a press conference for the Alabama Stage and Screen Hall of Fame. (Yes, there is one). That year they were inducting Jim Nabors, the guy who played Gomer Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show, and Mary Badham who played Scout in To Kill a Mockingbird and Dean Jones who had been in Boston doing Company.
And Jones said, “I’ll never forget that first night, singing ‘Happily Ever After.’ I was saying,
‘Oh my God, the people hate me. They hate the song. I’ve got to get out of this show.” So that
came back to me today.

Here in the UK the BBC has shown series 1 and 2 of the Danish THE KILLING. Series 2 recently finished and in it's place is an Italian language feature length crime series INSPECTOR MONTALBANO which is very entertaining (incongruously humorous at times amongst the violence) and is particularly well made - great photography.

Back in 1991, I went on a job interview in Sarasota, FL (coming in from upstate New York), and did well on the interviews and tests, but it was nothing compared with going to a used book store with some recordings in it and finding a used copy of "The Golden Apple." I had been searching for that beauty for more than a decade. I eventually got the job but it seemed like second-rate news after finding that album.

Thanks, der Brucer. Jones also said elsewhere that he could never get a handle on Bobby. I think that's why he was so good. He was as lost as Bobby is, and in his singing, he's not afraid to show it. Hard for an actor to do that. And in the clips of the 1993 reunion, he's so self-assured and just enjoying himself that he's all Dean Jones and no Bobby at all. He's still good, but it's not the same.

But do you remember how many stars were on the flag then? I honestly don't.

July 4, 1912 – add Arizona and New Mexico 48 stars
July 4, 1959 – add Alaska – 49 starts
July 4,, 1960 – add Hawaii – 50 stars
der Brucer
I have an extremely rare 49 star flag which was part of my father's commissioning ceremony when he made the rank of Brigadier General in early 1960. I've been told it's worth a lot of money.
You should take it to Antiques Roadshow...I think it's coming to Seattle again. :)
-
Finally able to post. I was up at six, announced, went back to bed briefly, got up, printed out a huge number of orders, found that morning meeting was not happening (pushed to tomorrow morning), then a surprise early lunch with David Wechter, then printing out more orders.
-
I forgot to mention and I know this will excite Jrand - in Andrea Marcovicci's show she sings Zing a Little Zong.

Excellent vibes and xylophones for Dan the Man's mum.

It's a very clear night, at which times I like looking up at the night sky and gazing at the stars. It always gives me a wondrous sense of the infinite.

Prayers and vibes for your mom, Dan!

Well, elmore, I am glad that you have finally admitted that you are washed up!
And thanks for the set-up, Lar.
-
Thanks for the notes on GOBOD, JMK. (Can I get any more initials in that?)
You could have signed it J.G.

DR ELMORE thank you for all of the ONCE links. I don't think I watched the movie all the way through - but this really looks like a very entertaining show. It's nice when something good is embraced by the reviewers!!!
Yes, and I was glad that Egbert and Egberrt liked it, too.

As a promotion, I'm giving away (through Goodreads) two (2) copies each of five (5) of my recently published screenplays: MATRICIDE, UNCLE LOUIE, SARAH GOLDEN HAIR, GHOUL CITY and BARRY & THE BIMBO.

if you desire them, just go to the website to order - they'll be "live" at six.
I went to the webssite and was surprised that the new CDs didn't show up on the opening page.
A little clicking found what I wanted, and I ordered it.

I couldn't get the page to open.

Shocking news from France.
Horrible news.
That is! AND several local schools are in lock-down because of a reported triple shooting in Lacey (http://www.theolympian.com/2012/03/19/2036620/police-respond-to-report-of-triple.html), WA!! :o
What is this world coming to??
And, no doubt, the shooter will be from JBLM.

DR JMK at least you didn't come to a competition in Indiana - here you would have found an LP of GOBOD by the Terre Haute String and Brass Orchestra augmented by the General Lew Wallace Elementary School Chorale.
He wrote BEN-HUR. Not JMK, but Lew Wallace.

Good to see that the New York Times redid its review of "Once" and liked the show more now. I, too, had friends who hated the movie and I would steer them clear of the stage version

See the bottom of this "review" for a complete musical sequence.DR Ben, I don't agree with you about the movie and the musical; i think the musical is an imaginative revision and not an attempt to put the film onstage: the songs are in different places, the cast iis utilized more imaginatively. I wish more movie adaptations treated the films they're based on so loosely rather than try to present the movie onstage.
Thanks for the link & comments. I sent the link to Keith's cousin & aunt who will be in NY in May.

I just came quickly to a computer to google something. I was cutting some cheese and the knife slipped and cut my pinkie. It does not seem deep. But it hurts and will not stop bleeding. I actually ended up doing what it said online- cold water, then wrap tightly and lift hand over your head. Ouch.
Sounds like a good fix. But yes, ouch!

Vitamin E can also do that as well as other "healthy" things we take.

DR Jennifer how is your finger now? I have found cuts like that usually start bleeding again & have a tendency to needs lots of band aids.
I don't think it has started bleeding again. But i've had it bandaged for the last 5 hours. I am going to take off the bandaid in a minute and check. It doesn't seem like it will bleed again. Because it was scary heavy for 90 minutes. And then on and off for 2 hours.
It is sad this happened today because i cleaned off my bike and filled the tires and had everything ready for me to go out. But my finger is still hurting.
I know for sure it is supposed to stay warm for another 3 days and maybe thru the weekend.
-
I did a google search. I think advil can (boy are there a lot of side effects) and ibuprofen works similarly to aspirin.
As mentioned finger tips do tend to bleed a bit, but your finger bled longer than expected. It sounded like it might have needed stitches. Since the bleeding has stayed stopped I wouldn't worry about it unless you need surgery.
-
I expect you will be fine to bike by tomorrow. A tight bandage makes the finger hurt more.

Can anyone explain to me the difference between LCD and LED televisions?
LED is the newer technology, the TVs tend to be much lighter and incredibly slim (some less than an inch thick). Light life is much longer and energy use less. They also tend to be more expensive than LCD for the time being.

Yes, and the other child the principal's. :( There are plans to give Jewish & Muslim school extra protection though they don't think this is a hate crime, "just" a serial shooter. The gun has been used in other random shootings.

I really needed this on the cruise. I went for the more sedate colors so I can take it on my next cruise, whenever that might be.
Very good choice, DR Jane!

TRIAL VIBES for CIllaLIZ
-
Thank you DR Ginny. It doesn't hold much, maybe just enough for an evening out when I'm traveling, or a summer evening out here. It is lightweight and flat for putting into a suite case. Unless I need something dressy it should be ok.
-
Can anyone explain to me the difference between LCD and LED televisions?
LED is the newer technology, the TVs tend to be much lighter and incredibly slim (some less than an inch thick). Light life is much longer and energy use less. They also tend to be more expensive than LCD for the time being.
I noticed that last part, which is why I wondered what the difference would be.

Page eight.

G'night!

I heard from former DR Tomovoz, whom I alerted to GOBOD. He needs our vibes as he is recovering from another bout with cancer.
Thanks for sharing this news, DR JMK.

TRIAL VIBES FOR DR CILLA!!!!
Thanks Jane. The pretrial motions went well. Tomorrow is the big day - the first day of trial.
-
DR cillaliz is traveling?
How did I miss this?
How embarrassing
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Travel Vibes for DR Cillaliz! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DR George, if you want your ONCE recording to be really complete, download Mendelssohn's piano solo "Songs Without Words," Op. 30, No. 6, the Venetian Gondoliers' Somg. It happens just before "Falling Slowly."
Not traveling, starting a very serious jury trial tomorrow. The facts aren't serious but it's overcharged ...WAY overcharged, so it's serious
Vibes for Tomovoz~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OK I am going to try this again - yesterday we saw this bird on a telephone wire - I happened to have my camera in the car so we pulled over and I shot this picture from across the road
I guess do not put a badly cut finger under running water. I was just tring to clean it. But it made it bleed again. Well it just opened the cut and there was a little blood.
-
the it flew across the road and landed in the tree right next to the passenger's window - the Vixter shot this picture(http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff302/HHWgroup/HawkMarch2012640x480-1.jpg)
-
I hope Laura can identify it for us
-
I did a google search. I think advil can (boy are there a lot of side effects) and ibuprofen works similarly to aspirin.
As mentioned finger tips do tend to bleed a bit, but your finger bled longer than expected. It sounded like it might have needed stitches. Since the bleeding has stayed stopped I wouldn't worry about it unless you need surgery.
I am surprised that advil cold and sinus has a lot of side effects. I am quite sensitive to medication and i get no side effects from it. Maybe it did bleed longer because i have had to take the advil.
-
Gorgeous owl.
-
Watched "Warrior" tonight. It's long, but it's also very good.
-
Btw this might sound dumb but how do you know if you need stitches? Since the cut did not seem deep to me it did not occur to me that i might need them.
-
It looks like a hawk or an eagle
Gorgeous owl.
Is it an owl? We thought it might be a hawk
if you haven't stopped bleeding for 90 minutes you might need stitches
-
Thanks for the vibes. I have a few more things to do to get ready. This case is total BS. The stakes are high and it's all over burning toilet paper. I hope the jury has a little common sense
-
Better get back at it
Could Jane or Laura, whoever it was, remind me about your recommendations for lodging in The Grand Canyon?
Trial vibes for DR Cillaliz!
-
DR Vixmom - I think it's a hawk or falcon of some kind.
-
We have stayed at the Bright Angel (right on the rim) and at Yavapai Lodge (away from the rim).
If you have lots of money to spend, you would want to stay at the El Tovar. If you like rustic (as in tiny and sink/toilet only (shower down the hall), you want one of the cabins at the Bright Angel. The Yavapai was like a regular motel room.
We ate at the cafeterias in the Yavapai or Mazwik (near the Bright Angel). If you have money to spend, eat at the El Tovar.
We don't have lots of money to spend, so they don't let the likes of us in the nice places.
-
If you were out here, Vixmom, I would say it's a red-tail hawk. You have different hawks than we have, although you do have red-tails.
I have asked an expert, and I will let you know when she answers.
Great shots, by the way.
-
JMK, make your reservations early!
-
Cooper's Hawk
Immature
Thin streaks on breast
Rounded tail
Banded tail, with broad white terminal tail band
Yellow Eye
I think I may have identified it - I wonder if Laura will concur
-
That was another thought. Cooper's are medium size. How big was it?
thank you it was sheer luck -- we were on a road with very little traffic and it flew right next to the window = the Vixter gets credit for the better shots
-
I have consulted our Peterson Field Guide and think it's a Northern Harrier. Richard and I entertain ourselves on our way to and from Lima on Sundays by seeing how many hawks we can spot perched along the highway. You and The Vixter were very lucky to get such a good view. Great pictures!
-
Was it flying through the trees?
-
maybe a foot tall - when it flew across the road we were impressed by it's wing span , definitely much smaller than a canadian goose though
-
'night!
-
here is a slightly different angle if this helps at all
(http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff302/HHWgroup/100_5539.jpg)
-
Was it flying through the trees?
it was sitting on a telephone wire when we first spotted it - there was the remains of some animal on the road that had apparently been struck by a car right by where he was sitting then after I photographed it , it flew across the road in front of us and landed in the tree right next to Vixter's open window - after these photos it flew off and we saw not where
-
I see a red tail on the second photo. A Cooper's often flies through the forest. Although we've had one that flies over our house lately.
-
well it is nearly midnight so beddy bye time for me
good night all! I would be very interested to hear what your friend has to say Laura!
-
VIBES to all what needs 'em!!
-
It looks like a hawk or an eagle
I think you're right. I saw an owl photo earlier and have been thinking about owls ever since. Nice birdy.
Night owl. And night, all.
Yes, I saw Tomovoz's order come in. JMK, why don't you tell him everyone is sending our patented vibes and simply suggest he come on back and get the support that might make him feel a little better.
Must write the notes now.
