Well, you've read the notes, the notes were hooked and Danish, and now it is time for you to post until the Danish cows come home.

Good morning, all! I detest this weather; it's no good for sleeping: too warm, the bed has too many blankets, and I will not turn the AC on before May. One day it's too warm, nexy day it's back to low temperatures. I don't know how to dress, and I hate what it's doing to my sleeping patterns.

So, today I have a morning at Encores!, going over transpositions for Leslie Uggams with Joshie. I'm waiting on a full score for DEAREST ENEMY, but I have started getting posts on availability of singers for the recording: I've lost my favorite juvenile, Dean Power, which is a bummer. but I hope that means he's getting some better work elsewhere. My beloved Rachel will be back, and that's great news.

Before I head to Encores!, I have more bars to write for the ROBERTA stage band. and this dump still needs tidying up.

The last time I saw DR Rodzinski, I thought he told me he was coming back. That was several months ago!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy Birthday Wishes to E&T DR Rodzinski !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Watching that video on CNN of the 3 year old being patted down in 2010, which people are saying was uncalled for.  It seems the security person is going out of his way to be considerate, and I'm puzzled why people are seeing this as an example of what's wrong with security.

Here's the video

just looks like someone doing his job, and rather gently.

Today is my father's 86th birthday.  Here is a picture of him with his guitar taken a few years ago - I combined it with a picture of his mother and all his brothers and sisters.....he is the baby in his mother's arms.  This picture was about 1928.

His father died of TB in a sanitarium in North Carolina.  He had gone there for very expensive treatments, and once his money was gone, they sent him home.  He owned the general store and lumber mill in Liberty, Kentucky....and was also the local school teacher.

My grandmother sold both businesses but never received her money from the men who took it from her.  She moved to Indiana where her brother and sister had families in the early 1930's.

When he was about eight years old, my father contracted polio.  He had several operations on his legs and used a wheelchair for awhile and then walked on crutches.  He has always walked with a limp.

He and my mother will be married 64 years this September.   ;D

Last week I listened to Philip Roth's "Nemesis," which was about the polio epidemic and the hysteria surrounding it. It's not an era you encounter much any more, and it must have been scary living during the spread of an illness that no one knew the cause or how to prevent it.

Laura - it was the early twntieth century:

No Pill
No Condoms
No Diaphrams

And with the mortality rate, your needed more than "a pair and a spare" to ensure population growth

Also:

No Social Security
No emploer provided retirement plans
No 401ks

Your retirement plan consisted of rearing  adequate breadwinners to support you in your old age).

der Brucer

Note also:  in rural communities added children were an ecconomic plus; from about the age of 8, kids "gave more" to the family than they cost to keep.

You bethcha, Red Ryder!

I remember the films of the kids in iron lungs that preceded the ushers passing the can for the March of Dimes at the local movie theaters.

There was a general fear of using public swimming pools for fear of Polio - sure made for lousy summers in the suburbs!

der Brucer

Also, most folks my age had a relative or two who died at an early age of influenza or a Great Aunt Tilly who succumbed to "consumption", as TB was called.

The Sound of Music Blu Ray - 45th Anniversary BIG BOX collection is available at Amazon today only for $24.99.   I couldn't resist buying it!!!

I have the movie on DVD - but it's something I watch a few times a year, so I guess it's money well spent.  I think this version was spoken of here on HHW, but I forget what was said about the transfer.

And Roth's central character (hard to call him a hero) is a gym teacher who is a camp counselor during the outbreak, as the children start coming down with the disease. And he feels personally responsible, as if he's Typhoid Mary.

DR RP - I just read the only letter that survives from my grandfather.  It seems it was the Ambler Heights Sanitarium in Asheville near Edgemont Park....but it was on the Black Mountain State Highway.

In the letter, written on April 22, 1927, he encourages my grandmother to get her garden started, not to let the kids stay out too late on the cool spring evenings, pick up some potato plants he ordered, and to make sure the banker gave her the money he was supposed to.

He sends messages to all the children and promises he will be well and home soon....   They sent him home in the late summer that year - and he died on December 29.  He was 39 years old.   :'(

My father also came from a huge family--we didn't even know about some of the kids, many of whom died in infancy, until my sister found birth certificates in England and then later we got the foster home records from New York.  I may still have an Aunt somewhere out there we haven't been able to find (Keith--get on that, would you?)  :)

Are you talking about Sylvia or Catherine?

The baby that was given up for adoption.  Sylvia I knew about, and Kathie actually remembers her.

Was Catherine, born 6/19/22, the name of the baby?

I think the baby was just given the temporary name Catherine because that was my grandmother's name, but, yes, the baby whose birth led to my grandmother's death and who was given up for adoption.

Tell Keith it's just as important to find out what happened to my Grandfather and oldest Uncle.  ;)

He and my mother will be married 64 years this September.   ;D

A Very Happy 86th Birthday to DR JRands Father!! :D

Keith now remembers that merry-go-round & is still recovering.

If Keith is searching for a person that was formally adopted he could well end up on a never-ending merry-go-round. Upon my adoption I was issued a new birth certificate phonied up with my new name and adoptive parents' identities.  The original is locked away in a state vault (where not even I can see it). The phony birth certificate gives no indication that it does not reflect truth. Indeed, I can't even be certain that the place and date of birth are accurate.

Unlike all those "guests" on TV shows and subjects of Lifetime movies, I have never felt "a piece of me" was missing".  I will confess to childhood fantasies of being a long-lost prince.

Of course there was the time when I was six that I went home and told my Mother that my teacher had called me aside and had chastised me for mentioning that I was adopted and told me that it should be my secret that I should never shared. I gather that poor Miss Williams had quite an earful the following day! My Mother had always made me feel that being adopted made me special, so when the teacher asked all of us to share "where came from" - I shared.

When others learn more details of my family situation, they usually jump to wrong conclusions: my parents lost a child when he was 18 months old, and adopted me when I was 18 months old - didn't I resent being a "replacement" baby.  Nope! (When my parents were told shortly after my older brother's birth that they could have no more children, they decided to adopt another so they would not be raising an only child; Bobby died before I was adopted. The only thing I resented was not having that older brother. When 8 years later on, my Mother found out the hard way that "couldn't have any more children" really meant "shouldn't have any more children she gave birth to Chuck, it seems I was expected to feel eternal resentment because they now had a "favored" natural son and I was just an also run adoptee. Well, wrong again. If anything it was Chuck who probably had the resentment of growing up in the shadow of an older, seemingly more favored, brother.

I bet my story would drive a Psychoanalyst nuts.

Zef really seems to be settling in. To start he was very stand-offish - he loved playing with Moose, but generally ignored the rest of us. Now he is demanding more and more attention. He follows me all over the house, sits on my feet when I'm trying to put on shoes and socks, and regularly pokes at me to get patted. I'm giving  him "K9 Glucosamine with Chondroitin and Hyaluronic Acid" to help ease his artritic hips. (The damn stuff has to be refrigerated - a dose is two teaspoons which I measure out into a 1/2 cup measuing cup and he happily (thankfully) laps it up ( it does seem to be helping - his "after-hingement" is still clunky, but he does not seem to be uncomfortable).

As our reward, he has now decided we need his protection - so he sits on the side stoop and barks at everything.

Thanks for sharing all of this, Jack.  I Googled "TB Sanatorium, Black Mountain NC", plus variations like replacing the location to "Buncombe County, NC".  A lot of different documents turned up indicating that this region was one of the most prolific areas for the treatment of TB and that there were as many as ten different facilities operating at any one time.

Back at the turn of the century, TB was a plague and folks either survived or succumbed.  Treatment wasn't on a par with what came by mid-century.  It's a shame your grandfather's treatment wasn't effective.  39 is too young!!!

Last week I listened to Philip Roth's "Nemesis," which was about the polio epidemic and the hysteria surrounding it. It's not an era you encounter much any more, and it must have been scary living during the spread of an illness that no one knew the cause or how to prevent it.

I remember when I was quite young, that people still thought that cancer was contagious.

Are you talking about Sylvia or Catherine?

The baby that was given up for adoption.  Sylvia I knew about, and Kathie actually remembers her.

Was Catherine, born 6/19/22, the name of the baby?

I don't know what anyone is talking about.  I feel like Mikey.

He and my mother will be married 64 years this September.   ;D

What a fantastic picture....and my gosh, his parents went through the ringer, didn't they.

And 64 years...wow, even the total of my mom's three marriages (beginning in 1948) don't equal that.

For over a year I have been looking forward to going to Bernese Mountain Specialty in Gettysburg.  I just canceled my reservation.  I'm not sure if I'll still be charged for the 2 nights I booked.

Now I have to tell all the people I had planned to hang out with I won't be there. :(

Watching that video on CNN of the 3 year old being patted down in 2010, which people are saying was uncalled for.  It seems the security person is going out of his way to be considerate, and I'm puzzled why people are seeing this as an example of what's wrong with security.

Here's the video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNO-AzPxS4U

just looks like someone doing his job, and rather gently.

I would think that if I was a terrorist trying to sneak a bomb aboard a plane, that a darling little boy in a wheelchair would be the perfect place to hide it.

I read, before seeing this, that changes are being made to make it easier for children & elderly people.  What the changes are I don't know.  Next time I fly maybe I won't be lined up with all the old people for a body check.  The body check I don't doubt will happen since I doubt I qualify.

The elderly applies to anyone 75 or older.

TOD - Muffins, Danish, and pastries (Oh, my) were removed from my diet on August 3, 2010.  I love almond-y bear claws and, in the fall, I have to have just one pumpkin spice doughnut.  One of my all time favorite pastries is the fried Danish from Central Pastry here in Middletown:

Yuck!  They look like small intestines.

That is what I thought, also...but I figured I had just been watching too many episodes of THE WALKING DEAD.

I am trying not to spend too much time in front of the television while I am home this week (otherwise I will get nothing done), but I did take time today to watch a rather obscure movie that arrived from Amazon.com yesterday.

The film is THE SCAVENGERS. It is one of those made-in-the-Philippines-but-starring-American-actors movies. It looks to have been filmed around 1959 but not released in the US until around 1963. Stars Vince Edwards and Carol Ohmart.

As much as Vince Edwards was a very unpleasant person (according to many of my interviewees), I do enjoy looking at him.

Ok, sorted through piles of 8x10 movie stills that have been accumulating over the last few years, and which I have just been moving around from box to box, pile to pile.

Found a ton of Allison Hayes photos I didn't even remember I had, still in the envelopes from the Ebay dealers that I bought them from! LOL!

I have to start a new binder for Allison. The first one is bulging at the seams...just like Allison in the skimpy outfit she wears in MOWHAWK.

DR Danise, don't worry if it's too much for them, it isn't.  Just let them do it for you. You deserve it
I hope so.  I think about all those who lost their whole homes in those tornados, like your friend Joe.  I feel bad.  Truly for complaining when I do have a roof over my head.  Even if they do think it might be leaking.

DR Danise, years ago I was in the hospital with an infected hand.  The nurse basically told me to shut up when I complained she was wrapping it too tight & it was painful & proceeded to tell me about someone who had lost both his hands.  When I told my father he said I should still be permitted to complain about my hand, which did hurt about as much as having a baby & has only been topped by a broken shoulder.

The next day the hand specialist had a fit when he saw how tight the nurse had wrapped my hand.  Lesson learned, there is always someone worse off, however, when the pain is your own you don't need to feel bad about complaining.  :)

DR George, I was wondering.....even hate to ask..... but could I send you some blank DVD's to have more copies made of the AC show?  I had to give two the copies you gave me away today to the contractor and the rep from Lowe's who came to look at the  house.  They need them to show their boss and I don't think I'm going to get them back.  I've had many requests for a disk and I'm not even sure how many more I need.  I am NOT giving away the one copy I still have.  That's for ME.

I was amazed by how much they said they were going to try to do to the house.  And had a lot of gulp moments when they said "I can't BELIEVE he did (or didn't) do this or that." and "Would you look at THAT!".  I just hope it isn't going to be to much for them to do~

Don't worry about sending me any discs...just tell me how many copies you want. :)
I don't know.  Maybe 3 or 4?  I didn't expect to lose 2 this quick and i have a feeling the news or paper may want to see the show as well.    I do want to send you something.  I can't take all this taking and not giving.  I feel so self centered right now.

I collect keychains. :D

I forgot.  I didn't see any on this last trip or I might have remembered.

Today our side of the courtroom was packed with my client's former coaches, both from high school and college, as well as a big group of friends.   There was no one on the prosecutors side.  (It's like a wedding - bride side, groom side).   Don't know if the jury knows who everyone was, but the sheer numbers show the support for my client

Thank you DR Jane.

Got just a touch of bad news.  I got the results from last months Colonoscopy.  I won't go into a lot of details but I have confirmed "Severe diverticulosis" among some other problems.  Sigh.  All that stress I was under took time to show up so I guess I can say thanks to Mr. Turner for this as well.
I just told to go on a high fiber diet.  I'm doing the best I can.

I'm sorry about this.  Have you been given a special diet so you can get that down to diverticulitis?

They used to say don't eat seeds, as mentioned by DR Cilla.  Recently I've read the strict diet, including avoiding seeds, wasn't necessary, yet people I know with the problem say it does make a difference.

I don't think I have a problem with seeds.  I don't know what triggers it.  It just seems to happen when I'm very stressed.  I confess I didn't think I was stressed this weekend but I had the attack anyway.  Who knows?

My mother in-law had to stop eating jam with seeds which she enjoyed every morning.  She switched to seedless jams.

Health vibes for Danise.

I, too, had severe diverticulitis, but it went away after the doctor waved his magic wand and removed a section of colon. I will say, however, that I do have a persistent problem with corn, a food I shouldn't eat anyway because of my diabetes. All that leads to this moral: My body is telling me one way or another that I shouldn't eat everything and that I should be careful about what I do eat.

I would think that if I was a terrorist trying to sneak a bomb aboard a plane, that a darling little boy in a wheelchair would be the perfect place to hide it.

I remember the Viet Cong used to give a preschooler a genade, pull the pin, and send them down the trail to greet the arriving GIs.

I made three kinds of scones: plain with lemon glaze, blueberry with lemon glaze, and chocolate chip with vanilla glaze.

Sadly, there was not much publicity about this meeting, so there were LOTS of scones left over. I sent them all home with folks, except for one chocolate chip one, which I brought home to DR Sandra.
