Thanks for the Pipe Dream report DR ELMORE.   I have the CD of the OBC which I have listened to once or twice.  I bought when I was working on a production of A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING and I wanted all of the R/H show cd's for the display case.  I guess I like Me & Juliet a bit more than you do....but I only know the songs on the CD.

I don't watch this show since we don't get AMC here.

I don't know if you get the channel AMC, but on Sunday is the 2 hour premiere of SEASON TWO of THE KILLLING at 8pm.

Elmore, do you think "Sweet Thursday" would work with a new book? Or are the lyrics too much like the book for it to work?

I'm like JRand. I only know the score from the CD and I much prefer the livelier sound of "Me and Juliet." Am really glad this is getting a recording.

My boyfriend came over yesterday while I was at work and fixed all the things in the yard that needed to be mended with electric tool things.

He's really sweet.    :)

And has this look of total "what's the matter with you" on his face when I and my mouth are having tantrums.

It's rather quite uneasy for me to look at him.  ???

Good morning, all! I stayed up too late to watch the cast of ONCE on Letterman; the show ends at 12:37, and the ONCE number happened around 12:33!  While I waited I leafed through BK's new memoir and had a huge nostalgia trip looking at all the photos! There I am, in my Alice In Wonderland t-shirt, and it brought back so many memories. I look forward to reading it. I will most likely begin it tonight.

Today, I have laundry first thing, and then I need to hear the 4th Disc master before I can get into my continued search for a young Brit to play Captain Harry Tryon, our juvenle.

PIPE DREAM vs ME AND JULIET: I loved M&J as a kid, but I think a lot of it was my curiosity on how the set moved from stage to light booth, to dressing rooms. The book's a complete mess with a musical at its core making absolutely no sense, and I now find Joan McCracken, as I do in everything she recorded, a horror to listen to. The score to PIPE DREAM has grown on me, but I think R&H were the wrong writers for gritty derelicts and skid row whores, no matter how whimsical Steinbeck's characters might be.  Could a new book  fix the problem? I think it would probably point out further the split between the songs and the reality of the characters. Loesser succeeds completely in GUYS & DOLLS, but it's a complete cartoon. PIPE DREAM isn't, and it's hard to tell from what's onstage at City Center if R&H were trying to write like G&D. I think the score is too moving at times for the silliness and flimsiness of the story, and, when the score gets silly, it  doesn't always succeed: "We Are A Gang Of Witches" is a bad song, right up there with most of the bad songs in ME & JULIET. But, when the silliness is good - "A Lopsided Bus," the calypso of "The Bum's Opera" - I think Rodgers is writing better for the show than Hammerstein does. But, then, Rodgers had already done one great show about gritty characters and the seamier aside of show biz, PAL JOEY.

TOD:
DVD:  three Netflix including "My Week With Marilyn"
CD:  Herbert songs, PIPE DREAM, ONCE, Offenbach, Guy Haines
   VCR: oy!

BK wrote:  "I’ll probably check out Pal Joey and Demetrius and the Gladiators."

I guess "Pal Joey and Demetrius and the Gladiators" was a sequel to "Pal Joey" or maybe even a sequel to "Demetrius and the Gladiators."  I wonder if you can get it from Netflix.

We watched Criterion's A NIGHT TO REMEMBER earlier this week.

As much as I enjoy both the 1953 and the 1997 movies, TITANIC, I think that this is, by far, the best dramatic film that deals with the tragedy.

Equally as moving in the Criterion set is a 20 minute interview with Eva Hunt, one of the survivors, who lost her father that night.

Re:  UPS

Bruce, I have had several packages over the years not get delivered on the day they're supposed to arrive...and have seen the "Attempted delivery" designation.

As it was explained to me one evening near 8 p.m. when I, very upset, called from the place where the package was to have been delivered...the package for which I waited "out front" so the driver could not possibly be missed or miss me...and said package suddenly being reported as "Attempted delivery....", the drivers may have any number of reasons they didn't get to me, but they have only one choice for reporting and that's the "Attempted Delivery."

I had gone on and on about my having waited and having never seen the truck in the more than 2 hours I waited outside (yes, it was something I was ANXIOUS to get) and it was absurd that the driver had claimed he attempted to deliver when he was never anywhere near the building.

I suspect that your driver was delayed at some point and missed the closing of the UPS store...so he had to report the why of his non-delivery and had only one option to choose.

They don't tell you that up front....but if you are persistent enough, and can confirm you know the truck never showed up, they finally break down and tell you.

It may be awhile before I can sit down to read it as I have a couple of others ahead. Right now I am being entertained by the scandalously wonderful FULL SERVICE by Scotty Bowers.

Laundry finished, it's time for the vacuuming and dusting before I can listen to the 4th CD.

I spent the hour while the clothes were drying listening to British actors who'd been in London productions of Sondheim and Rodgers over the past 5 years: several good ones are Australian-based, so that's out. ne's a mediocre Tony from a WEST SIDE STORY, one from the last revival of INTO THE WOODS isn'tceertain he's a pop, opera, or rock singer and all fields suffer from this indecision. My favorite: A Mr Snow from the last CAROUSEL revival who sounds 25, but whose resume says he's 52! Since the clip is already 3 years old,  I don't want to commit to this one. Oy!

I'm up after a really good night's sleep, which I really needed.  I called the UPS hub and it's similar to what dear reader Ron says - my package was on the wrong truck yesterday.  The driver ticked the attempted delivery thing - and the woman at the hub didn't know why because there now is a place to put the real reason.  The package was delivered this morning so that's that.

We have another storm system setting up in the Bay Area.  Lots of rain expected tonight and tomorrow.  We need it badly as we're still below our annual average.  Weatherman this morning predicted we'd be having rain well into April (which isn't usually the case).  Last year, however, we had rain into June, so it looks to me like there isn't any "norm" any more.

Yesterday’s visit to the Ophthalmologist was uneventful; my eye pressure had reduced to near normal.  He dilated by eyes, did lots of measuring and chart reading and decided we should give the drops more time to work before we went for surgery (so much for our Drs doing unnecessary work for the charges); so, I was remanded back to my optometrist for further monitoring.

We had all sort of time to kill, but with my eyes fully dilated I was not in the mood for much. We went downtown, walked about a bit, and had a nice lunch at a Southern Mexican style restaurant. The lunch special was “Taco Salad” (the waitress did comment that it was made from Salmon, but I said fine. What arrived was delicious, but would not pass muster as a “Taco Salad” (except it was in a shell) – the meat was large chucks of nicely broiled salmon, the beans were cold and black (and tangy), there was no cheese, the greens were a glorious mix of everything but Iceberg, and it was dressed in a lightly spiced  vinegar and oil, no guacamole, no sour cream.  Graet dish – but not a “Taco Salad”.

We came home about 1 PM.  I expected the spend a miserable few hours of coping with the damn dilated eyes. Almost tripped over a large box the Mail Man had left on the stoop – I anticipated nothing that large from Amazon, it was too large for a slim self-published book – a bomb maybe?

Well, we got inside and while Woody paid the tax ( treats around for the dog, I set about diffusing the bomb. It had $10.85 of postage more than I would ever pay to ship a simple bomb.

Inside, lo and behold was a delightful tome and a nifty “Jesus” cup (Does Zack K have a Pat Pend?).

With my eyes, I was not about to read a book – but I couldn’t resist a peek.
So I peeked, and peeked, and peeked some more…I peeked till I could barely peek at all.

And was I surprised!  No “Poor Little Me” litany, no “Misunderstood” Creative Artist, no dish-the-bitch memories – just page after page of fast-paced re-creation of the creative (and in one noteworthy instance, destructive) process. And, most of the “dish” was that the bitch was charming.

You know how when as a kid you’d go to a Saturday matinee horror film and find yourself wanting to scream “Don’t go down the cellar steps!” – well that’s how you feel when you see the best laid traps of Madam Machiavelli and her hench-husband bring about the bloody abortion of a very special creative enterprise aborning. That our intrepid author continued what became eventually a lost cause for redemption (I’m right, god dammit!) makes us pause and reconsider our  measure of the man.

It’s fun to find all sorts of unexpected references to folks we know from other places - Lea Michele, from Glee. (of course there’s Barrett Foa, with nary a reference to his current high-profile status as a leading supporting character in the top rated NCIS-LA – an omission I attribute to the author’s not being familiar with every show new show on TV). But the author is no fancy famous-name dropper – the book is filled with kind professional references to all sorts of the great supporting cast behind the record business.

Any reader will move the author a few points up on their admiration meter.
To learn more about the makings of an album, and the makings of a man, read the book.
WARNING – reading this book with dilated eyes will make one teary.

I am back from a nice visit with my Mom.  Took her some grocery items that she'd been unable to find herself and helped her with some paperwork.  We chatted a while and sketched out some plans for our trip to Michigan at the end of next month for my sister's 50th wedding anniversary.

Sounds nice.

I had two Christmas Eves in a row, where the online tracking site suddenly switched to "Attempted Delivery."  Both times I ended up going down and standing around the lobby of UPS with a whole crowd of other people who were not home when delivery was attempted.  Finally aftter the second year, I asked one of the drivers and he told me that on Christmas Eve, their trucks are so overloaded, that by afternoon if there are a lot of stairs, or it is in an apartment building for the address; they don't even try.

Post by: bk on March 30, 2012, 03:47:29 PM

A book about hundreds of shows, and hundreds of albums’ and hundreds of people and one or two eateries, and no Index.  THERE IS NO DAMN INDEX!

What a heartwarming post.  I worked really hard to write this tome fairly and not have it be a "revenge" piece.  And the handful of times the poor pitiful me syndrome was starting, muse Margaret was there to stop it.  As regards the index - I didn't do it because I didn't want anyone who thinks they're in the book to be able to flip to the index to find themselves :)  And the proof of that decision being a good one for me happened the day my first copy of the book arrived - someone came over who thought they were in the book and immediately picked it up and flipped to where the index would be - I just smiled.

Now, since you've already written this beautiful post, how about just cut and pasting it over to amazon?  :)

Hi all.   Sorry for not posting last night.  i was so tired I went to bed very early.

Many thanks to Dr George for the DVD's.  I gave one to the finance guy for our retirement fund down at work.  I was asking him questions about the best thing to do about the money when I get it.  Got some good advise about that and on some other matters.

I found out that if i want the room I will have to pay $500.00 for the stamp/seal and I have to pay for the room to be drawn by an architect and all the permits.  Someone told me it could total a couple thousand.  Thank goodness I'll be getting that money from Frigidare.  I wouldn't be able to afford it.

Turner left several permits open so those will have to taken care of as well.  I was so upset because they will have to be moved to Sergios name.  I'm just so worried that there will be something Turner didn't do and somehow it will be on Sergios record.  That would not be right.  I can't stand the thought that someone who trying to help me might get hurt for something that monster did or did NOT do.

Dr Elmore, thank you for the Michael Ball email!  :)  I haven't had time to watch it yet but I will.

Vibes to all who need them.

DR TCB I'm so glad you got the phone.  I hope it works well for you.

DR Danise I wouldn't worry too much about the permits.  The new contractor should fix any error's the old one made. I'm not sure it is a terrible blight on a contractor's name if they don't pass inspection.  They will just be requested to fix any problems and it shouldn't be a big deal.  That's my take on it from personal experience.

Not really.  There is a large group of people called Lordites who have pushed over the years the beilief that the Californian was never close enough to have seen the Titanic, or vise versa.  They have tried to rewrite history to show that there were two other ships sitting between the Titanic and the Californian.

I like it specifically for that reason - it just presents the story, which I find more than dramatic enough.  Interestingly, the most moving thing in the film for me is when the musicians stay on and begin playing Nearer My God to Thee.  A wonderful moment.  Were the people on the Californian ever reprimanded or brought up on charges?

Not really.  There is a large group of people called Lordites who have pushed over the years the beilief that the Californian was never close enough to have seen the Titanic, or vise versa.  They have tried to rewrite history to show that there were two other ships sitting between the Titanic and the Californian.

It was my understanding laws requiring someone at the radio at all times were put into effect after the Titanic sank.

So whichever ship or ships didn't catch the distress signal there wouldn't have been any legal charges made against them.

It isn't a DVD, DR Danise; it's a bootleg of CD of the show.

We've had a pretty spectacular thunderstorm and it's cooled off quite a bit.  Very refreshing.

It seems too early for refreshing thunderstorms.

Yeah, but it's also too early for temps in the 80's, too!

I think you are needlessly worrying over these permits, DR Danise. For one thing, these companies working for you are loaded, and it's all publicity and advertising fees for them. If you're lucky, maybe they wll then sue the ass, too, for the extra fees.

There is still no agreement on whether or not the Californian was the other ship:

When I was out at the wreck site, there was a Lordite who was one of the guest speakers.  He and I clashed early on, and he wouldn't call on me after he found out that I didn't agree with him.  The last night we were at the site, he put on this huge demonstation to prove that it was impossible for the Titanic and the Californian to have seen each other.  First he had this other ship sail out something like 6.5 miles and then we watched from the deck as the other ship set off rockets, which were quite visable.  Then the ship sailed out another 6.5 miles (or something like that) and then they set off rockets again.  The Lordite was speaking from the bridge, and all of us were standing at the rails when he triumphantly shouted, "Fire your rockets."

Even without the use of binoulars, everyone on board our ship started shouting, "I can see them!"

Why are there always these people trying to rewrite history?  I've just read up on the findings and there's not much wiggle room for the poor Californian and Mr. Lord.  But no discipline seems to have taken place.

I hope so.  I just don't trust anything Turner did.

I doubt Sergio and team won't trust him either.

Cooking class canceled because the pig had been in the freezer too long and was mealy. The poor instructor was so embarrassed. I tried to tell him it was better that he canceled because the quality wasn't right, but he was still upset. He said he cried when he cut into it.

I told him to write it up for me and explain what could go wrong for people. It was a little fresh, but I think he'll do it next week when he can begin to laugh at it a little.

Went to the club.  The layout is a little peculiar to me and I'm hoping I can figure out the best way to play it.  I have to be comfortable - then again, I wasn't comfortable at Vitello's till our second show, so hopefully that will happen here.  The sound tests were not to my liking either, but I gave my thoughts and hopefully they will be addressed by Sunday - if not, I will be as strong as I need to be to get it the way I want.  Lighting is better than Vitello's.  Digital grand piano is just weird and funnily that may end up being the deal breaker.  We'll see how our MD feels about it.

Watched the second hour of Mad Men - when the power went out the other night, it was at the fifty-minute mark - I had no idea they did a two-hour opener - and of those two hours, I'd say about three minutes held my interest - what an AWFUL premiere show.  The two years off did nobody any good.  And now Jon Hamm is a producer?

I just finished watching the 1963 version of "Jason and the Argonauts."  I taped it off TCM a couple of weeks ago.  I hadn't seen it in years and I'd never seen it in hi-def.  It was thoroughly entertaining!  Even though the special effects aren't that special anymore, it just seemed so much more "real" than modern movies.  There weren't any over-the-top action sequences that just went on for forever.  There wasn't wall-to-wall "mood" music telling me what to feel.  When they were in the narrow sea passage and the other ship was crushed by falling rocks, there was no background music at all.  To me, that actually helped enhance the tension of the situation that they were in.  I even made my own DVD of it (even though that's not in hi-def).
