Well, you've read the notes, the notes had the music and the night, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently singing The MOOsic of the Night.

Wow I keep getting first post!

Sergio will come to County Center today to talk with the permit dept and I will have to go down to give them the letter turning the open permits over to him.

We didn't have that meeting yesterday that I was dreading so it might be today. Ugh.

Vibes to all.  Pain free vibes to dear TCB.  Hoping all Moms are doing well.

TOD: I have no idea what the first music I was  exposed to would be, other than I was taken to "Lady and the Tramp" when I was about six weeks old and I'm sure I heard hymns from then on, too. But the first music I really remember was the score to "Mary Poppins" which I first heard when I was about 3 years old. Those Sherman Brothers get the credit.

Good morning, all! It's seems to be a nice day in NYC. I slept rather well, with one peculiar dream involving my friend Leigh Beery, aka Mrs Jonathan Tunick, a drive, a pie, and a 2nd floor balcony needing guard rails. I think Joshie and Jonathan were in the dream as well, and I have a memory of Goldman Park in Middletown, OH. Oy!

The laundry is in the washers, and in about 10 minutes it goes into the dryers. Following that, I am off to City Center to go over the vocal score fixes for DEAREST ENEMY. That's pretty much my day.

I was reading by the age of four, perhaps earlier, thanks to my mother, grandmother, and aunts reading to me daily while we lived at my grandmother's house, and the family parlor game was having me select 78's from the record collection. My favorite was Khatchaturian's "Sabre Dance," recorded by the Boston Pops, but I must blame this game for my attachment to popular songs of the 1940s.

TOD:

I liked to listen to the radio when I was small...country music or popular music.  Then I heard "See You Later Alligator" - which struck me as the funniest thing I had ever heard in my life.....so I sang that for a long time.

Elvis Presley......and some song about a guy named Jimmy who died.....around the time James Dean died....I had just turned 5 when that happened.

Classical music - Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto as played by Van Cliburn on the Ed Sullivan Show and the Steve Allen Show.....

And then the vocal groups like The Four Aces and movie music!!!

My sister is almost 10 years older than I, so she was a teenager when I was becoming aware of my musical surroundings.  She was a big Pat Boone fan and she loved (loves) musicals.  The first music I remember asking her to play for me was her 45rpm set of the OKLAHOMA! soundtrack, which I requested upon my return from the hospital without my tonsils and adenoids.

My eldest sister is almost 12 years older than I (something I try to remind her of as much as possible), and it's due to her that I love a lot of the music I do today, especially Sergio Mendes, whose first three Brasil '66 albums she brought home from college when I was a kid, and I just fell flat out in love with them.

I see my library is in the process of releasing all the dvds they got 2 weeks ago. I am only first for one of them: Something Borrowed. But i am a big fan of Emily Giffin (the author). So i am really hoping they made a good movie out of the book.

I see my library also got Footloose and My Week with Marilyn. But those aren't released yet.

I need to get Breaking Dawn back from my sister (i lent it to her). It's due today.

I am really hoping that the book i am dying to read (which is the sequel to a book i really liked) will be released today (it's in verification). Although i don't know that i'm first in line. So i guess i shouldn't get my hopes up. If that book is released today i will read it first.

I know the library has the Hunger Games movie companion waiting for me. I'm curious to see what the book looks like and how much background info there will be. I heard the director has decided he will not do Catching Fire.  I hope that having a new director does not change the tone too much. Although since i didn't like the shaking cameras maybe the new director won't do that.

Reed books for Annie are done for the orchestra read-through on Saturday.  Using two players, one solely on flute and one on clarinet/sop sax/alto/tenor sax.  There are 5 in the orchestration with crazy doublings as they all play flute and they all play some form of sax and/or clarinet.  Of course, I don't have the budget or the room to put them in our pit.  I think this will work as the keyboard will fill in the rest.   Now, to program the damn keyboard....

TOD:   It's hard to remember which music first got to me, but my grandfather lived with us for a short time and he had a hi fi console and a bunch of 78 rpm recordings that I loved to play.  My favorites were Les Paul and Mary Ford doing "The World is Waiting for the Sunrise" and "Whispering Hope."  Then there was the radio and the hits of the era.  My parents would have friends over and we'd all end listening to some music.  My most vivid memories of those "early 50s" revolve around a bunch of us doing the "Bunny Hop" in the living room.

My favorite actress/singer of that era was Gail Storm.  I used to sing along with every Gail Storm song that was played on radio while I was listening.

The highlight of the week was watching "Your Hit Parade" on TV, sponsored by Lucky Strike.  All the hits of the day were performed by Dorothy Collins and Russell Arms and Giselle McKenzie and Snooky Lanson.  It was TERRIFIC!

Between my sister's listining to rock'n'roll and Motown and my parents with their big band music and the popular vocalists of the early 60s (not to mention Lawrence Welk, Kraft Music Hall and Bell Telephone Hour on tv), I was surrounded by all kinds of music as a youngen.  But it would be a while before I developed my own tastes.  I do recall that my first personal music purchases were Millie Small's "My Boy Lollipop" and the MARY POPPINS soundtrack.

Hitting a few minor snags on Mom's recovery.  Her doctor has given her a new diuretic in order to rid her of the final vestiges of fluid in her lungs.  While this has delayed her going to rehab and prolonged the hospital stay, I'm glad that they are making sure that she is in a good state before discharging her.

I wasn't happy to find on Wednesday that they had moved Mom for the third time since being in the PCU.  I'm sure this contributes to her occaisional confusion about her whereabouts.  Also, she now has a roommate who has a HUGE family that is constantly visiting her.  Last night I counted ten people crowding her side of the room.  I'm surprised that the nurses are allowing this--I though my sisters and I were pushing the limits with three.  My mom was getting agitated with the noise and the parade of people passing by her bed and wanted me to help her out of bed so that she could find another room.  Before we left, my sister and I complained at the nurse's desk about the situation and requested another room.  As much as I don't want to see her moved yet again, I don't want her to stay in that room if she has to spend another day in the hospital.

I just read THIS (http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/entertainment/20120412/US.Film.Cabaret.Renewed/) article about "Cabaret" finally being restored and why it hadn't been before.  I would assume that it'll eventually be released on Blu-ray, but it doesn't specifically say that.  Here's what the article says about the restoration:

Quote
"Cabaret" has been sold on standard-definition DVD from Warner Bros. But it was unavailable in high-def or for digital presentation because of a vertical scratch that ran through 1,000 feet, or 10 minutes, of one of its reels, said Ned Price, vice president of mastering and restoration for Warner Bros.

The damage apparently was caused by a piece of dirt that had rolled through the length of the reel, starting with a scene in which York's character has a confrontation with a pro-Nazi boarding house resident, and cut into the emulsion.

With the damaged images digitally "painted out" using bits from surrounding areas, "the difficult part was matching the grain structure so the fix was invisible," Price said in an email.

Repair attempts using automated digital processing failed, so all 1.4 million frames of the damaged reel were painted by an operator using a computer stylus. The restored version is expected to play on TCM later this year.

I also spent a good deal of time on the phone regarding filming in this neighborhood.  Last night's missive that there would be filming over a two day period this weekend and blocking both sides of the street in front of my house and five blocks to the west was the straw that broke the Kimmel's back.  Somehow my little neighborhood has become the poster child for film shoots and I've had it and most of the neighbors have had it.  So, first I spoke to the location manager, who was appalled to find that whoever did the paper got almost all the information wrong - my street is not involved, as it turns out.  He was a very nice guy and totally understood - I also told him that even though this block wasn't involved that every time that's the case crew and actors always end up parking there rather than going to the lot that the production company is PAYING for them to go to.  He said to call him the day of the shoot if that happens, which I will.

Then I raised a little hell with Film-LA, the service that books these film shoots and suggests where to shoot.  I got very strong with them and told them this was happening three times a month now - he told me he's had a bunch of other complaints from my neighbors, so he said they will now look carefully at the frequency of shoots here and not allow that to happen anymore.

I'm under the impression that Warner Brothers plans on releasing this on Blu-ray this year.  It has been months since I read whatever it was I read about "upcoming" (i.e. in the year ahead) releases from them, but "Cabaret" WAS one of the titles.

I don't think that this has been mentioned here (yet), but J.K. Rowling's next book: 'The Casual Vacancy.' (http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/entertainment/20120412/EU.Britain.JK.Rowling.Book/)

I forwarded this article to our adult fiction selector and she had me put in a temporary record in our catalog...I placed the first request.

The 4 library books i was waiting for were not there. I am going to read the Hunger Games movie companion tonight. And if my books aren't there tomorrow then i will start something else.

I have a series (well the first two books) to read. But i don't want to start that if the library books will be coming in. Plus i have 2 ebooks i want to read (including BK's book).

On the bus, I checked my phone messages: too many tension-filled ones about things, not all of them pleasant and one of them jeopardizing the recording, which concerns me. While driving about in the car Woody commented that it was time to put in a new CD because we were listening to the same one again;” I know”, said I. “This time I want to concentrate on the orchestrations.” The orchestration of “Don’t Fence Me In” (of all things) had got my attention –so I tuned out Miss Luker, and concentrated on the accompaniments.

The Harry Potter books are FINALLY available as e-books AND for libraries, so I would assume (but you know what that means) that this will also be available to libraries.  The article makes it sound like a physical CD won't be available, though...just the audio download.  It doesn't mention a paperback, so it's the hardback only, at first.

TOD:

Earliest memories are listening to Gracie Fields broadcasting from England during the War; that plus Kate Smith were my early radio day music memories.

In elementary school years my folks had a 78 Phonograph and my Mother loved playing “The Ink Spots”  I had been given an album set of a narrated Peer Gynt (with Grieg’s Music).

The first pop song I remember singing was a Sammy Kaye ditty:

Chickery chick, cha-la, cha-la
Check-a-la romey in a bananika
Bollika, wollika, can't you see
Chickery chick is me?

My next favorite was Gene Autry’s “Home On the Range”.

Fifth grade brought about Violin Lessons so I was all about Humoresque and Barcarolle

Junior High meant Music Appreciation class and The New World Symphony and Pictures at an Exhibition were favorites.

By the time Mom the folks were home listening to Bing Crosby’s Blue Hawaii album, I was off discovering Eartha Kitt and The Weavers.

All time favorite classical:

Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini and Franck’s Symphony in D

I guess it's non-PC to say how much I enjoyed the annual Minstral shows.

Penguin pulled its books from library distributor Overdrive because it distributed Penguin’s ebooks to Amazon’s Kindle Lending Library — which had no contract with Penguin allowing them to do so.  But that meant that most libraries in the country couldn’t get ebooks of Penguin titles. As a School Library Journal report notes, Penguin’s move proved temporary, but it had a “chilling effect” on libraries doing business with the company.

Meanwhile, of the remaining Big Six publishers, Hachette, Simon & Schuster, and Macmillan, simply don’t sell ebooks to libraries.

The fuss centers on the publisher's desire to limit the numer of readings of an Ebook sold to a library.

The Harry Potter books are finally available as e-books from libraries through OverDrive.  Although there isn't a limit on the number of check-outs (readings) for these titles, there is a limit on how long they're available once purchased.  They actually have a five-year license...unlimited use, but five years from time of purchase, they're dead unless more "copies" are bought.

I came home to face a crisis needing an emergency phone call and I think everything has worked itself out well for now. I had a great time with Joshie today. We got all the fixes into the vocal score and it looks great. By 4:30, though, my mind was fried, and I had several emails and phone calls about this "crisis" today, needing my attntion when I go home.

then I got a surprise phone call from Kyle Guglielmo, who was so wonderful as Curly in the North Carolina School of the Arts production of OKLAHOMA! this last year. He wants advice on operetta roles, and I'm looking for another good snger for my recording roster. that's not a euphemism!

Considering it works like a regular book I don't understand the problem.  Reduce the number of books they will sell then, those who prefer not to wait in a long queue & can afford to purchase will.  Those who can't will still have access to books.

Medical Update (and stuff)!

I just wanted to announce that:

I survived my back surgery on April 3
I left St. Joseph's Hospital on April 9
I entered the University Place Care Center on April 9; and I then left that facility (today) on April 12, 2012
I will continue my recovery from my own home.

A different ebook/library question.

In the US which ereaders can borrow library books?  Here i believe it is only for Kobos. Not that my library has the books i read as ebooks anyways.

I guess it is becoming bigger in the US to borrow ebooks?

It all depends on which vendor (seller) the library buys from.  Different companies that libraries get their content from license different formats/e-readers.  I don't think that there's any kind of standard.

Today I had dinner on the Titanic.  I sat at Margaret Brown's table.  My name is Miss Mary Natalie Wick.   Captain Smith was there and quite the gentleman.

The Last Dinner on the Titanic was very fun.   We only had 6 of the 12 courses, but the food was great.  We also didn't have a different glass of wine with each course the way the real First class diners did, but it was good.

Captain Smith (aka Dutch Haling) kept us updated on what was happening on the ship.  It was very well done.

The whole trip was quite nice.  I will take more day trips with this group.   My friend Fiona was fabulous.  She has been leading these trips for a number of years, but this is the first time I've gone on one of them.
