Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of gushing without actually gushing, and now it is time for you to post until the gushing cows come home.

It was over 80 degrees in NYC yesterday!

It's already 71 now at 5:35am. It's scheduled to get up to 76.

After that it returns to regular spring weather with some rain.

TOD:

The earliest dancing I can remember was in primary (elementary) school at the age of around 7-10 where we had Country Dancing. We had to pick partners and there was a certain girl who always made a bee-line for me. I wasn't keen on her though because she had sweaty hands!

Country Dancing was like this (obviously they still do it):  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yjbbLGejXfs

Good morning, all! I didn't sleepwell last night, thanks to the neighbor above me who, for the past several days, seems to have either herds of animals tromping about between 10pm and midnight or movers packing him up. He's usually very quiet, so I'm at a loss to decipher what the hell is going on.

So, we have no leading man for the recording. James Cleverton's agent offered us a greally good Verdi baritone who's dark voice is all wrong for the role. we're waiting to hear from Richard Morrison's agent today about his status.

So, i've been googling "young british baritone" and getting names like Christopher Maltman, who would be perfect but who's now such a big star we couldn't afford him, or Bryn Terfer, whom I love but who hasn't been young for twenty years.  I did find a couple, but I can find no vocal clips to hear them!

Today, I see a podiatrist at 9:30 on Park Aveneu and 22nd Street. After that, I am off to the Encores! orchestra reading of the score to GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES. I hope when I get back there will be god word on a baritone.

I am sick of this damned hot weather.

Well today is the day.

Yes, Messala, today is the day.

I am cleaning out my closet - for the first time in three years.  Last time I had 18 bags of clothes and shoes for Amvets.  I bought a box of 28 bags - just in case.

I hope to be done....SOMETIME today.

I am not sure what discoveries I will make.

Twice Betsy and I have attempted to dine at an Italian jernt in Lake Oswego.  The first time was a few years ago when we just showed up there one night and were basically laughed at by the host when we went inside and informed him we didn't have a reservation.  Yesterday I booked a reservation for our anniversary dinner and then received a call at 5:30 that their power had gone out so they were canceling our reservation.  Why do I suddenly want to go watch GENTLEMAN'S AGREEMENT?  ;)

So we went to ANOTHER Italian jernt and had a wonderful meal and some very good wine.  The hilarious thing is this place was just hopping, which we assumed was because the other place had closed down for the night.  They only had one poor waiter who was just doing a mad scramble to wait on everyone.

I received a very sweet email this morning from the writer of a small scale Christian film I just reviewed.  It's always nice to hear from folks actually involved in the filmmaking process, or at least tangentially related.  I'll never forget how gobsmacked I was when Samuel Bronston's son started emailing me out of the blue after I reviewed Fall of the Roman Empire or maybe El Cid.

I have been on a nonstop Alfred Deller Consort listening spree since I stumbled upon the fact that all of their Vanguard recordings were released on CD, evidently years and years ago.  But I managed to track down the complete set, which I tend to be obsessive about if I get one volume of something.  :)

TOD:  When I was about 9 or 10, my brother (a year younger than I)  and I went to a Saturday evening dance class to learn ballroom dancing for about ten weeks.  It seemed like every kid I knew in my small town was also there (a conspiracy by our mothers?).  It was held in a long ballroom at the Women's Club and, though I can't remember how partnering was achieved, we were all in a large oblong sphere that reflected the shape of the hall where we were taught your basic box step and we kept moving forward around the hall, but since we'd only learned the box step moving one direction, the oblong sphere kept moving onyl forward and inward to where at regular intervals we all had to move back out to the perimeter of the floor.  I don't recall if we ever learned to move the other direction or how to reverse or any other subtler moves.  The class was taught by a rather grand dame who was the wife of a local Cincinnati TV personality, Len Goorian (who hosted a local amateur talent show onTV, if I recall).  Coats and ties a must for the boys; the girls, party dresses.  At the end of the evening, the young gents had to get their partners cake and punch.  Our instructor's chant of "slow, slow, quick, quick" is for ever burned into my brain and I used it in PSYCHO III when Tony Perkins teaches Diana Scarwid the basic box step.

My first dancing, to my recollection, was a square dance that we put on for the benefit of our parents in the library at Griffin Creek Elementary school when I was in the 3rd grade.

I wore my fringed, leather vest, so popular during that time, for the event. It went well with my psychedelic, multicolored polyester shirt...of course this was 1973.

I believe my dance partner was Jackie, the girl with half a foot (half of one foot had been cut off in a tragic lawn mower accident...and she liked to show it off whenever possible.)

TOD

At age five my mother decided tap-dancing lessons were needed, so once a week we went to Philly for group lessons. I remember having to perform in a Dance School recital in a tux with bowler hat and cane imitating Ted Somebody-or-other.. I still remember the echo of those horrid directions:

Brush, back, stamp; brush back stamp, brush, back, kick!

And, so was born my ignominious career as The Reluctant Dancer.

Grade school years were filled with local Square Dances – I was a klutz, but could remember complex routines.

I took a Junior High class in Folk Dancing (which got me out of P.E.) – my Polka specialty held me in good stead for years. My Mother also taught me to Charleston and Black-Bottom.

High School years meant formal Ballroom Dance lessons at the Women’s Club. We did the classics, waltz, fox trot, polka, but in a nod the current rage we also learned to Cha-Cha (slow, slow, quick, quick, quick) – to maintain terpsichorean rigor we also had to learn Mambo and Rumba.

College years at Annapolis were amusing because I was one of the few guys who could lead the ladies in the specialty dances. (With The King and I movie still playing and the show on perpetual tour – my show-off polka was often on display.

After graduation I got snagged by a little theater group in Key West, Florida, to play in Pajama Game (another damn polka!!!) – a casting decision dictated not by “how ell can you” but “will you”. (The hours trying to learn a Steam Heat specialty number were grim).

Graduate School got me caught in being cast as Mordred in Camelot. Out Morgan LeFey fashioned herself quite the dancing star and the director “called in a favor” and had a professional choreographer work with us.. To complicate my rehearsal schedule, the director (Cole Weston, son of Photographer Edward Weston) asked his wife Maggie (an erstwhile cabaret singer from South Africa) to do “something” about my disastrous attempts at singing (I did have the “Seven Deadly Sins” solo!).

Of course my real fame to fancy footwork came years later at a weekend gathering of gay motorcycle clubs .at a mountain resort. For an afternoon’s entertainment, the host club had set up various competitive events around a large swimming pool. One event was “Walking on Water” Running lengthwise down the entire pool was a floating string of 4x8 plywood panels loosely linked by ropes. The competition was to see who could walk across the water in the best time. A bunch of guys lined up for the competition, but one after another they all ending up loosing their balance on the ever-shifting panels and taking a header into the pool. It was then that your humble big-mouthed correspondent yelled out “What a bunch of wusses – I could walk across that water, and I could do it in high-heels”

Open mouth and insert high-heeled foot!!!

Needless to say, said shoes, with four inch spiked heels, magically appeared and the dare was on. Standing at the pools edge, I wondered how far Miss Goody Two shoes would make it. Well. she wouldn’t!  There was only one hope – How would Ethel Merman get to the other side? So with strident determination and firmly planted toes, I brusquely strutted my stuff. – and made it all the way  across!!!!

I remember taking dance lessons when I was a wee sprig of a girl...probably 4 or 5.  I was never much good at it, but I had fun.
The first "partner" dancing was at summer camp, where we used to hold square dances.  It was surprsingly fun.
In high school and college I used to go swing dancing, which I always loved.

I am back from the GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES reading. I left early. I wanted to get back and see what was going on with the casting situation.

My appointment with the podiatrist was at 9:30. I was there by 9:05 and didn't see thedoctor until 10:20. I was not amused by the wait. I headed immediately to the reading and got there around 11. Rob was prepared as usual - I can mention former previous MDs at Encores! who sometimes seemed unprepared for these things (I was the whipping boy at one readthru for his being unprepared and I said to Ted Chapin "I don't lie being the scapegoat for his incompetence") - and it was nice to see friends in the band, Joshie, and friends from the Styne office.

So, I got home to find that James Cleverton's agent had got James out of his August 17 commitment. I also had an email that Richard Morrison, my other choice, was also available. What do I do now? Yesterday I had no leading man and today I have two. Either one would be perfect.  I told the Dublin management to go with the best offer.

So we went to ANOTHER Italian jernt and had a wonderful meal and some very good wine.  The hilarious thing is this place was just hopping, which we assumed was because the other place had closed down for the night.  They only had one poor waiter who was just doing a mad scramble to wait on everyone.

I'm glad you had a nice celebration.

Not so grim. Can it really be only 32 years ago?

I've made myself a western omelette with cheddar, ham, and salsa,  and I suspect I will be in bed in another hour. I slept poorly last night and need a good night's sleep. Tomorrow I'm meeting Kyle Guglielmo, Curly in the North Carolina School of the Arts OKLAHOMA!, for breakfast at 8:00 to discuss operetta roles. After that, i will take five vocal scores of DEAREST ENEMY to Kinko's to be bound, and then head down to Toyland to meet my colleague Curtis.

Back from the dentist, where we had a horror movie in my mouth, with more blood than any Friday the 13th movie.  But it's all clean and sparkling now, but he's putting me on once every three months to clean for the next year, which I will completely abide by.  In three weeks I get two porcelain caps to repair the two chipped teeth.  The gold crown that's been painful is fine and the pain was coming from gum problems - as those abate so will the pain.

Was all the blood also due to gum problems?  Did the dentist give you a rubber tipped gum massager?

Well, if James let go of the other offer to do this might he be the one to pick?

Either way, good news for you.

What do the initials GCB mean?

The original book that the TV show is based on was called "Good Christian Bitches."  That was going to be the name of the TV show, but it was decided to soften it and then it was going to be called "Good Christian Belles."  Then that got shortened down to "GCB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GCB_(TV_series))," which can pretty much stand for anything you want it to stand for.

Toby has this bedtime ritual. When Jed is the one to put him to bed, he goes and brushes teeth and such and then "sneaks" up on me on the couch to say good night. I, of course, cannot turn my head to look at him him, and when he says "boo!" I act very surprised.
Tonight, Toby added a variation to the game. He made sure I was not looking at him, waited until he was about a foot from my left ear, and proceeded to crash two pot lids together as loud as he could.

Later, after Jed had peeled me off the ceiling and I had checked to make sure I did not need a change of underpants, Toby remarked that it was the best surprise ever.

I'm finally leaving work.  It's been quite the day of invoicing.  Today is our (new) cut-off for invoicing for next Wednesday's board meeting (it used to be just the Friday before the Wednesday meeting) but our huge Amazon.com invoice just arrived TODAY!  This month, it was only 35 pages long...in the past, it's had as many as 48 pages!  That's a lot of inputting.  Anyway, I was able to get the whole thing done today so that when I run a particular report tomorrow, all the information will actually be on the report.  Then I have to make sure that the report is absolutely correct.  There are always mistakes.  But that part takes a lot less time. :)

Until later!

Back from THE THREE STOOGES....hmmm...it had some funny bits, but otherwise it was not all that enjoyable. The guy playing Moe was good, but the other two actors (Sean Hayes, being one of them) were trying too hard. A couple of the supporting cast were funny.

You are probably better off just watching the old Three Stooges.

Cole fell asleep about half way through the film.

DR Jane, Cole's parents (my neice and her husband) were taking him. Cole just called to invite me to go with them.

In my zeal to preorder ADAM 12 season 7, I accidently ordered it twice...so now I have two sets.

I did the same darn thing with PERRY MASON season 4, volume 1. I must start paying more attention.

I've been replacing some CDs that were stolen a few years ago and a few that I thought were stolen weren't actually in any of the the boxes that were stolen, so I now have two copies of the OBC of Jelly's Last Jam, the revival cast recording of The King and I and three, count 'em THREE copies of The Birdcage soundtrack.
