Six goldfish have drawn the short straw and are all ready (or as ready as a fish can be when swimming in a plastic container in a car) for the drive to my sister's pond. I will report on how they get on - or even survive the 200 mile journey.

Of course on t he day I'm having dinner with a friend from London and I have to walk to the restaurant it turns out to be unpleasant weather. Ugh.

Anna Karenina. I'd like to talk with Tolstoy about so many things in the book, not the least of which were ideas about birth control and women's intelligence.

And I'd love to talk with Anthony Trollope about He Knew He Was Right and that sort of fatal obsession that destroys the main character.

It would be great to meet with J.B. Priestley and discuss literature. But he was not a fan of his own, "The Good Companions," or so he makes it seem in some of his comments, and  yet it is my favorite of his novels.

Good morning, all! The ghost struck at 3:30 this morning and turned on my computer, freaking me out and ;eaving me awake for some time. Beyond that I slept poorly, partly - I suppose - from sleeping too long the night before. I had one rather sad dream about friends aging and dying  - my only memory is being on the street with a lady I knew and her collapsing like a marionette whose strings are cut. I've been feeling rather melancholy about it since i got out of bed.

Last night I was up longer than I had intended, writing a synopsis of DEAREST ENEMY and dealing with emails. The Herbert songs are now arriving and I'm getting responses from the singers and acknowledged.
Today I head dwn to Toyland to assemble the full scores and get them to Kinko's for binding. I need to book appointments, one for tomorrow wth my barber and another with Social Security to put it into effect.

BK, I'm really happy the event went so well.  I look forward to reports from the usual suspects.

On the DEAREST ENEMY recording front, we have most of our cast now except for our juvenile.  I wanted my friend Hal Cazalet, who was avalable severalweeks ago, but his agent is really dragging his feet about getting back to us.

If you don't know this wonderful album, it's quite a lot of fun.

"Ghost"?

There are ghosts in my building that wander about. I occasionally hear voices both male and female and she speaks, I think in German, things fall, doors rattle and shake, and about once a month someone in the middle of the night passes through my apartment and I wake and know that there's someone else in the apartment with me. One of them is, I believe, the man who hanged himself in the apartment below me around 1981. Waiting for the elevator, I've seen him in the hallway and I saw him once in my bathroom while I was sorting laundry; he wears a blue shirt. The neighbors above me have a ghost that takes things off the shelves and leaves them on the floor.

I was thinking the other day I've got an idea for a vampire novel: a tenant moves into an old building and gradually becomes aware that several of the tenants are vampires and taking over the building by infecting the other tenants.  This all started because I've had two tenants above me, the lasty and the current, who seems to party all night and sleep all day, and the fact that my elevator the other morning smelled like something had died in it.

Ahrens & Flaherty.....there are some composers who become famous and who win Tony Awards - and whose music and lyrics still mean nothing to me.....nor does the idea of a movie of one of their "shows" or a Carnegie Hall presentation of their work excite me.

Why does mediocrity keep being rewarded?  Or is it because there is nothing grand to compare things to now?

A musical of "Rocky" -  really?  A musical of Rocky Jones Space Ranger, maybe....but ROCKY?????

Question: Have you ever tried to communicate with the ghosts?

No. I grew up in a house filled with ghostly activity and we did communicate with them; it was my maternal grandmother and grandfather. The ghost of the Siamese cat refused to communicate, although everyone saw it. My brother Randy, when he was around 7, hated to go to bed at night because of the oldman who came to talk to him. I asked him about it recently and he remembers nothing.

I don't mind most of the ghostly activity; it's just bumps in the night. Sometimes morning.  Several months ago, around 6:30am, a ghost slammed one of my closet doors really hard. It vibrated for several seconds.  I jumped.

I'll occasionally ask something like, are you in a bad mood today? or What are you doing over there?

It's the voices and the computer turning on that freak me out.

From Cilla:
Quote
You don't lose any books you bought on B&N.   Do you have the First Edition or the color nook?   Mine was the first edition.  One thing I probably did wrong was that I thought it was frozen and tried to turn it off.   That may have contributed, but not sure.  So if it looks like it's not doing anything don't do anything to it and call customer support.  You may not lose anything that way

The Nook Color.

I know Barnes & Noble should have my books stored, I'm not sure if I could download from other sources.  Once I lost a library book I was reading & was able to transfer it again.  I think I'm only permitted to do that 3 times.  I purchase a number of my books from my local book store (through Google books).  I think I could download the books I haven't read yet as they are still on my computer.   I hope I never have to find out for sure.

Thanks for the "frozen nook" tip.

TOD:  "To Kill A Mockingbird" -- Nelle Harper Lee

I'd want to sit and talk with her about the real people and events behind the story.  How much was based on her dad, her brother, her two sisters?  And which character, if any, represents her sister Alice, who is a real hoot to listen to on the DVD "Hey, Boo" documentary.

I don't think I'd call Ahrens and Flaherty mediocre.
I agree, to an extent. I'm not that thrilled with "Dessa Rose," "Anastasia" or all of "The Glorious Ones," but I do love "Once on This Island" and "Ragtime."

The sounds of a "Rocky" musical could be good. "Golden Boy" was.

Wow, just wow.

The talented composers of our time ARE talented.  Hence the reason they don't get backing to do a new show.  No one wants an unknown commodity anymore.

"Nice Work If You Can Get It" gets nine nominations for Outer Critics Circle Awards, but not one for best new musical. ("Bonnie and Clyde" and "Spider-Man" both got nods for best musical.) Strange list of nominations. If this is any indication, the awards race this season is between "Once" and "Newsies."

And I adore sister Alice Lee, too!  She could provide a lively and fascinating lunch conversation herself.

She reminds me of my dear departed Aunt Francis who was a school teacher in Virginia.  She had a similar voice, but it never got to the point that it sounded as if it were being squeezed out of a worn-out bagpipe!  LOL!

This got me thinking (a dangerous pastime, I know) and I looked up Stephen Flaherty on IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0280906/) and this movie version isn't listed yet.  But what is is a 2010 TV show from Australia called "Angels in New York (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1288699/)" and the synopsis:  Two rookie writer/producers from Sydney take on Broadway with new musical Angels.  It doesn't say to what extent Stephen Flaherty is involved, but who knew that there was another TV show about writing a new Broadway musical.  This, however, looks like a documentary, not a scripted fictional series.

I think if there were truly a movie version of Lucky Stiff happening in June it would not only be on the imdb it would have been announced everywhere.  In order to shoot in June they'd have to be fully cast and in pre-production now.  It sounds like a load of hooey, just like listing their upcoming productions as if they had anything to do with them other than having written them.  It's the usual sort of "let's keep our names current and out there."

Can we add:

Enjoyed last nights THE AMAZING RACE. I got a bit teary eyed a couple of times. Loved the Bollywood dancing....(the blonde) Rachel was amazing! I bet she could get a job in Mumbai film industry.

I got sick and tired of the Border Patrol guy constantly saying that only woman can dance...dancing is for women, men can't dance...blah, blah, blah...obviously he didn't see that half of the dancers in front of him were men.

;D

Electric Company:  Limelight
Hospital:  Lime Aid
(and my personal favorite, which I came up with):
Used Car Company:  Lemon Lime

I assume Lime’s official insect was the Deer Tick

It's fantastic news that we have an offer.  It will be SUPER fantastic once they accept the counter and then it will be SUPER DUPER fantastic once we get through inspection and close.  So continued vibes are much appreciated.

I am playing with the old nook.  I can transfer books to it, just can't download directly to the nook.  I'm going to keep looking to see if anyone knows how to recover a serial number.  I know what it is, just don't know how to get it back into the nook

I appreciate all the concern.  We were hoping for the lesser of two evils, lymphoma which has an excellent success rate with cancer treatment.  Instead they "think" he has malignant histiocytosis.  We need more info, Keith is doing research right now & I'm taking to my Bernese Mountain Dog friends on Facebook, to make a decision what to do.

Six weeks ago Sherlock's blood work was normal.  I fear this is moving quickly.  The prednisone does seem to be helping some.

Vibes and prayers for DR Jane, Keith, and our beloved Sherlock!

I thought it was an odd choice and probably expensive to film because of the overseas location, but I would welcome it. Stranger things have happened. That film of "Forever Plaid" went nowhere. Is it even on DVD?

Yes, it is. (http://www.amazon.com/Forever-Plaid-Stan-Chandler/dp/B004K4FUWA/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1335219319&sr=1-1)

It bombed because Jason Graae wasn't in it :-)

Finished with my marathon four films of Wallander - I couldn't stop.  Series one is done.  It would be almost five years between series one and series two, which I believe began airing in 2010.  I will have series two this week.  I have mixed feelings about it, since two key cast members from series one are not in series two - one ends the association with the show in the final episode of series one, and one, the actress who plays Linda Wallander, tragically committed suicide less than a year after series one wrapped - at thirty-three.

That final episode was one of the most powerful ninety minutes of TV I've ever seen.  It was originally shown in theaters in Sweden, one of three of the films that had that treatment from series one.  And it's as good as any movie shown here.  It's VERY dark and grim and there is no happiness in the entire episode, but boy is it compelling and brilliant.  The guest star is the actor who would go on to play in the second and third Stieg Larsson films, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest - I'm convinced he got the key role of Dr. Teleborian from the performance in Wallander - he is ICKY in both.  But a wonderful actor.
