Happy Day to Dear Jennifer.
And the word of the day is: RIPOSTE!
Mega vibes to everyone.Amen.
:)
Wishing DR Jennifer a very happy birthday!
A Very Happy Birthday to DR Jennifer!! ;D
Happy, happy, DR Jennifer.
I've been up since five. The rain is very noisy
Happy Birthday, Jennifer!
Inspection vibes for DR JMK.....
I could have sworn Jennifer just had a birthday, as I recall typing:
Happy Birthday to my almost initial twin Jennifer.
If anyone has any extra left over vibes, please aim them at the inspection process starting this afternoon at 3. Thanks muchly. :)
Happy Birthday to DR Jennifer!
For my birthday dinner I always have ribs (my favorite). But i've eaten at this restaurant a few times in the past few months and they discontinued the rib special (at full price it makes me feel like i am getting ripped off). So since my nieces begged me ... I will be going to my favorite Chinese restaurant (and i do love Chinese food). And some Chinese restaurants have excellent ribs.
I am on a rather bizarrely eclectic listening jag these days. My attempts to find cover versions of the Lullaby from Rosemary's Baby has led me to all sorts of outre offerings, including a Polish duo who appear to be that nation's Ferrante and Teicher, as well as Jewish jazzman Harvey Averne. Yesterday I got an old Doc Severinson album, as well as a Roger Williams outing. The Williams arrangement recasts the tune as a French Impressionistic number, with lots of dominant 13th structures--funny.So, maybe those dominant 13ths are sending vibes of their own through the air. ;D

I think it was BK's daughter who had the last Jennifer birthday.
There's some famous deli in L.A. I remember we went to when we were down there for our nephew's bris. This was early in Betsy's and my marriage and she had been insisting to me that her parents never argued. Well, they got into a very intense but whispered verbal scuffle at the deli that morning and I later told Betsy the only difference between how her parents argued and how my parents argued was the volume level. :)
Inspection vibes for DR JMK.....
That St. Joseph is still buried on the property LOL. I'll have to go dig it up if this sale finally closes. ;)

Happy Birthday to Jennifer!
Hmmm....I don't think we have any real delis in Salem, Oregon, USA. Those that call themselves delis are actually gambling joints.
So...I would guess that my first deli food would be sweet and sour tongue which I had on my first NYC trip. My mind is foggy this morning so I can't even think of the name of the place, but Elmore will know since he was there with me.
Isn't there a parody on some Jerry Herman live concert or cabaret recording where they actually sing "Hello, Deli"?Was that a part of "Perfect Hermany"?
re Santa - when the Vixter was 6 she said some of the kids in her class told her that Santa was their parents - so I asked her - are these NICE kids?
Well not really - she answered they're kind of mean
Well you know Santa only visits nice kids. But even mean kids' Moms and Dads love their children and they probably feel bad that Santa won't come to their house so they buy presents for their kids...
The other day I was sitting in my classroom with a few children, watching the clouds gather, and I began to sing Soon It's Gonna Rain. Not exactly the kids music they are used to, and in a matter of seconds I had all three of them sitting on my lap around me, listening. It was nice.
Nice pics DR John G.Thank you. She really doesn't look that odd on most days.
Tom & Jerrie-funny.
(The songbook has tons of pics of Tony with Joan).
Jane, I had to make a similar decision with my beloved 19 year old cat....yes, she was an old lady, but still a kitten to me.
Sending vibes to you and your family.
I am having a good time though. ;D
Thursday morning greetings! Just a quick HELLO before Mom and I head north for the weekend. I need to leave here in about an hour and make a couple of stops before I pick her up.
Happy Birthday, Jennifer!
Thanks. I'm a little bit sad because my mom is out of the country and I won't get to see her or talk to her today.
It's still cool here today. We need some sun and heat!
If anyone has any extra left over vibes, please aim them at the inspection process starting this afternoon at 3. Thanks muchly. :)

Before my mom left she left me a bag with my favorite treats. I guess she knows me because there were pistachio nuts and Reese's peanut butter cups!
And last night I picked up a new book from my library by my favorite author!

And she traveled on your birthday!!! ;)
Is she someplace fun?
For DR JMK: :D
Nice review of "Pillow Talk", but I will nitpick your comment about Doris Day:
She was never showy, and she frankly never really was cast in anything totally demanding...
I submit "Love Me or Leave Me"...very demanding, very dramatic and very Oscar-worthy, IMO, even though she wasn't nominated.
And as perfectly at ease as she was in her Universal comedies, "comedy is HARD". Very few dramatic actors have ever done it well or successfully.
Awww, your mother had better not miss her granddaughter's birthdays ;) I'm sure you are happy she is having a good time on the cruise, at least I expect she is.

DR elmore was it the Stage Deli you took me to when it was just the two of us?
The three Kritzerland S.T.A.G.E. CDs have arrived! ;D
Welcome, DR ChasSmith.
Anyone remember the Carnegie's short-lived appearance in Beverly Hills? Is there still an outpost of the Stage in Century City?
I put a tuna fish can outside this morning. Here is the rain it caught. I tipped it to the side so you could see it all.

2nd Avenue Deli.
I am listening to Manhattan Transfer Extensions right now. Birdland is finishing and now I have Wacky Dust.

Ah, the heady days of one's first deli. The cheese blintzes at Diamond's Deli, Severance Center Mall in Cleveland, around 1970. Pre- and post-movie food, and a blissful discovery. Can't have a blintz anywhere without recalling that. Thereafter (whilst still a student in Cleveland): Solomon's Deli, and Corky & Lenny's, both of which I think were in Cedar Center.
Fast forward to the years in L.A., where my attendance record turns suspiciously spotty: Factor's was a favorite now and then. Nate & Al's a couple of times. Canter's once or twice. (Did you know Canter's used to be a theater called the Esquire, hence the somewhat-marquee-style sign? I didn't either till recently.) There was something in the Beverly Center I indulged at a few times, don't remember the name and it's probably long gone. Anyone remember the Carnegie's short-lived appearance in Beverly Hills? Is there still an outpost of the Stage in Century City? First time there was on my way to the Lawrence of Arabia restoration at the Plitt. What else? If Jerry's -- on Ventura? -- is the place I'm thinking of, I did enjoy that a few times when on some Valley mission or other.
Nowadays I swear by the Carnegie and its pastrami and cheesecake and kick-ass waiters. The Stage looks great but never quite satisfies. Katz's is wonderful for what it is (and I've just discussed that backhanded compliment with friends who grew up within walking distance and swear by it) -- an old neighborhood takeout hole with a great neon sign, where the Experience is to die for, but the food is more to do die From. One chap calls it the crude version of famous deli food, and I'd go with that. But don't miss it.
Isn't there a parody on some Jerry Herman live concert or cabaret recording where they actually sing "Hello, Deli"?
Is that the one with Karen Morrow and Leroy Reams? I love that album, but I only had it on cassette.Isn't there a parody on some Jerry Herman live concert or cabaret recording where they actually sing "Hello, Deli"?
On "Jerry Herman's Broadway at the Hollywood Bowl," they go through the different ways that the tune had been used over the years. Hello: Deli, Lyndon, Artie's, etc. :D
My ASK BK Question (a day late, as usual): reading the Bricusse commentary included with the songbook reminded me of your long ago mention that you were going to release the 52 song demo collection that Jacobs put together for GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS. Whatever happened to that project?

ChasSmith has been trying to register for a while now, but we just get so many damn spam registrations (sometimes fifty or more a day) that I've just been nuking them sight unseen. But he's here now and we're glad to have him. He was interested in posting about the Mahler 6th and I look forward to his thoughts.
Larry, I also love Artie's!Me too!!! I was sooo proud of myself when I found it by myself when I was in NYC back in February.
No STAGE CD's today :(
Car is serviced. Needed new rear brakes - not too bad, though, cost-wise. Also two tires had nails in them - those were patched but I know exactly where they came from, whether inserted deliberately or not - the jerk daughter of Annette is having a lot of work done and there are work people taking up all the parking places for the last two or three weeks. They either drop nails or don't like the fact that I somehow have the temerity to park in front of my own house.

There has been a bluebird perching on the deck right outside my window here for the past two days. I am taking it as an omen of good fortune.
Greetings from beautiful downtown (well, not quite...) Grand Blanc, Michigan! Mom and I arrived at my sister's about 4pm and she got in her car and led us over to the hotel and helped us get settled. She's now gone home and we'll join her there for the chili dinner she's prepared.I hope you have a wonderful time, DR Ginny!
While I was out and about I got it in my head that I wanted some chocolate licorice. I've been thinking about it ever since Bruce posted that he can't get it out in CA. Well to make a long story short, I couldn't find it anywhere!

My phone rang thirty minutes ago. It was the Facebook friend from 20 years ago. After about a minute, the phone went dead. No cll back. My problem with Tome Warner Cable: where the hell is the phone call record? I need a caller ID machine.

Aside from the fact the dropped call is annoying are you saying you don't have his number to call him back?

If I had his phone number, perhaps we wouldn't have been out of touch for ten years!

He called you and you didn't get his number in time-what a shame. Caller is nice when the person is identified.
I USED TO HAVE CALLER I.D. I HAVEN'T SINCE MARCH. NOW THE CALLING NUMBER SHOWS UP ON MY TV SCREEN. IF THE TV IS ON.My phone rang thirty minutes ago. It was the Facebook friend from 20 years ago. Of course if you don't, I guess that explains why you always answer the phone when I call.

Thanks! I will try that, DR Danise, as soon as this phone call with the Man from Philadelphia is over!
This is the card my niece made me today:
Here is the inside!
Jennifer, that's so sweet!
She was so proud of herself that she applauded for herself as I was opening it :)
I am super happy. I was autoapproved (on netgalley) for a book that comes out in June that I am dying to read. It's called Timepiece by Myra McEntire. I loved loved love the first book Hourglass.
I don't really know why I was autoapproved (it means you don't have to request the title you are automatically allowed to get it). I see that i have the same option for 3 more books by the same publisher. Need to read up on these books to see if they interest me. This was a nice birthday surprise!

DR Jane, we're going to do a drive-by in Ann Arbor on Monday on our way home, but we will have just finished a Italian lunch in Brighton with some long-time family friends. I doubt we'll be ready for Zingerman's by the time we get to A2.
I see the family resemblance, DR Jennifer.

Zucky's. Somebody said Zucky's. I can practically see it in my mind's eye, but don't know where it was.

The last hour of "Mildred Pierce" is beginning to get to me. I hate the character of the daughter so much that I don't have patience for the mother.
I see the family resemblance, DR Jennifer.
Vibes needed for my sister, Linda. Like me, she is prone to kidney stones (she's passed hundreds over the years). She passed three around Easter. Now, she's facing surgery on Monday because she has two stones that are too large for her to pass, so they have to remove them. One, she says, is in the shape of a piece of candy corn.
I had the same procedure with one stone a few years ago and wouldn't want to repeat it.

They don't have any here in Iowa either
Someone asked about the Carnegie in Beverly Hills. NE corner of Beverly Dr. and probably Dayton Way,
…
Seeking the solace of salami and the balm of brisket amid the aftershocks of the 1993 earthquake, a long line of people gathered outside Nate 'n Al's, the venerable show-biz delicatessen here. When some customers grew antsy at the wait, a counterman reminded them that they had a choice: they could always go down the block to the Carnegie Deli.
The Carnegie Deli. In New York, the sound of those words would have been like chicken soup to shattered nerves. But something was evidently lost in transit between Seventh Avenue and 54th Street, site of the flagship Carnegie, and the corner of North Beverly Drive and Dayton Way, its West Coast outpost. At Nate 'n Al's that morning, no one even budged.
Today, the Venetian blinds at the Carnegie Deli here are pulled shut, and the glass door is covered with the greasy white paper normally used to wrap sandwiches too thick to finish. After several lean years, it became increasingly clear that this Carnegie couldn't cut the mustard. Two and a half months ago, it quietly closed.
…
It was not as if Los Angeles had no delis. In addition to Nate 'n Al's, there is Langer's (famous for its pastrami, but in a dicey neighborhood); Art's in Studio City (where, as they say, "every sandwich is a work of Art"); the Stage in Century City (from which Mr. Davis once ordered half a pound of nova, a pint of cream cheese and six bagels daily for his "early-morning nosh"); Jerry's Famous Deli (said to have the best chicken soup, but also serving "Chinese" and "Mexican" food), and Canter's on Fairfax, a slightly down-at-the-heels place with a good bakery.
…
He brought in Mr. Trager, who ran the New York Carnegie for seven years and spent much of his childhood at Murray's Sturgeon Shop on the Upper West Side. But some things could not be so easily imported. Local health codes and the spacious, ritzy site kept Pat Kuleto, the noted San Francisco restaurant designer, from recreating the endearingly chaotic quality of the original Carnegie, as did the tendency of Californians to sit around forever.
"Everyone is looking for a power table in L.A.," Mr. Trager said. "You 'lunch' in L. A. In New York, you eat."
...
