Title: THE MELODY LINGERS ON
Post by: bk on April 30, 2012, 12:09:55 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes lingered on and had melody, and now it is time for you to post until the lingering cows come home.

Good morning, all!

Before I went to bed, I took  some codiene-laced aspirin I purchased last August in Dublin and slept comfortably most of the night.  At 9am today, I wll call my doctor about a possible appointment. Around 9:15 I will leave for a consultation with Kinko's, before I head to my date with social security. The office I use is on 48th Street around the corner from the No 1 subway. I liked the lady who helped me with Medicare last year, and I'm hoping I see her again. Following that, I will head down to Toyland  and ponder orchestra parts.

BK, I'm happy the show went so well.

Almost every party I have ever attended is fun......BUT the most interesting party I have ever attended was in January, 1974, when I went to a gathering that included Jean Ratcliffe and many other friends of Frances Farmer.  It was very intriguing to hear about her, and the book that was promoted as her "autobiography" which Jean freely admitted she wrote - DR JMK has sent me several papers that explain just how that came about.....

TOD: I used to throw a derby party every year when I lived in Florida. I had a great house on a canal that the alligators used to swim in and occasionally crawl up into the backyard. You could fish back there for catfish or just sit and watch the turtles play.

Anyway, the first Saturday in May is always the Run for the Roses, and every year I would get people to play something new outside, bocce, croquet, what have you. The bocce  worked well, but a couple of the croquet balls ended in the canal (and no one was willing to fetch them out).

I would smoke a turkey and make hot browns, and about 30 or so people would show up to chill out, eat too much and drink too much, and just enjoy each other's company. They were great days.

I'm having people over this Saturday, but not because it's derby day. I will have mint juleps and my version of the beloved chocolate-pecan pie, but since I don't get TV, I doubt we'll even pay attention to the race.

Last week and this week were/are so busy.

Last week, I sent off the script I was hired to write, and also finished formatting work (over the weekend) on another screenplay I'm going to publish via CreateSpace.

This week, I'm getting reading for Texas Frightmare Weekend in Dallas next weekend.

I have to write FOUR DVD reviews today, so I guess I should get started.

Yesterday at the Bored Meeting, we had two gentlemen from Putnam County Emergency Management in to talk to us.  They were very informative and gave us a free Weather Radio.  The question came up - what do we do in the event of a tornado.  There was a pause from both men, who had heretofore been talkative....and then the man said:

"Well, we have been over the building......and it is our opinion that in the case of a tornado warning - you should evacuate the building......"

It IS a barn after all.....and not even our new rehearsal center was deemed unsafe for occupation during a tornado.....hopefully we will NEVER have to deal with the situation, but it IS Indiana.....

Greetings from Toyland!

My SS visit was too early;I'd been either misinformed last year or I misunderstood. I can't do anything about registering until 3 months before my birthday, so I have to book an appointment for around June 19 to register. I liked the clerk who assisted me very much, and I return then.

Great photos, DR JRand61! You must feel very proud of the PCP accomplishment.

Orchestra part dilemma: I can't get the reduction on the printer to work so do i want to print everything on 8.5x11 and enlarge it? I am not happy at the moment.

The old hand-copied parts were generally 9.5x12.5. With the printer, I can print a nice part that's around 11x13, after cutting down the 11x17 paper, but it seems awfully large to me. The only way I can get a copy onto 9.5x12.5 is to copy it on 8.5x11 and enlarge it by around 115%.

My mother, the nurse, wasn't shy about giving us codeine cough medicine.  Even when we weren't coughing.  She also used to bring home empty ether cans for me to play with, since I loved the smell of ether when I was a kid.  Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind.  ;)

I still have a memory -- (and perhaps it's never been anything but a fragment of an impression of an imagined or dreamed moment) -- of the ether mask being place over my face for my age-four tonsillectomy.  At times I've thought there was smell attached to that memory, but I can't lock in on it.  Bizarre, the things that stay with us.

I remember quite clearly the gauze mask being put over my nose and mouth and then the doctor dripping the ether onto it!  It was a sickly sweet smell, but I loved it.

I'm the third with an ether memory. We (my two sisters and I) had our tonsils and adenoids out at the same time around 1957 and I can still see in my mind being wheeled into the operating room on a gurney and having the mask placed over my face and being told to count back from 10. I made it to 9.

I think three children between the ages of 7 and 4 having their tonsils and adenoids out at the same time and then coming home for recuperation helped lead to my mother's breakdown soon after that.

I just got a mother lode of old movie-play programs, including several duplicates.  These are for sale for a reasonable offer (these are large format souvenir programs, not Playbills and the like):

Camelot (film)
The Godfather II
Barefoot in the Park (Bway, but with Tony Roberts and Penny Fuller)
June Havoc in Affairs of State
For Your Eyes Only
Frenchman's Creek
The Hiding Place
Claudette Colbert in A Community of Two
A Tale of Two Cities (it's the Bogarde version, JR!!)
Apocalypse Now
Funny Lady x 2

A few really rare ones that will take serious offers:

Design for Living
The Garden of Allah
The Wanderer
Salome

Also, daybills for A Free Soul (Norma Shearer and Clark Gable), John Barrymore in "his first talking picture" General Crack (hmmm....) and two early Vitaphones, The Terror and Cohan's The Home Towners (these both on heavy ribbed stock).

And, yes, I got all of these because I wanted  one Frances Farmer item.  :)

One winter  when I was in 11th grade I had a bronchitis & my father gave me a bottle of cough syrup with codeine.  In L.A. lunch was spent outside and I since I coughed more in the colder climate I did a lot of sipping on that medicine.  I got in soooo much trouble for talking too much in the class that followed, plus I flirted with a a senior guy I knew because he played tennis with my brother.

We actually dated for awhile.  I feel bad about it because my sister, coincidentally, began dating his older brother at the same time & then we both kind of stopped dating them at the same time though I thought she should have stuck with the older brother.

In high school it was fun receiving letters with a Stanford University sticker on the outside.;)

I have distinctive memories, which have been proven, from when I was 2 & 3.  I don't see why you shouldn't remember something so traumatic.

Your poor mother!!!!

I can now say that I have added to my life's achievements by having googled "ether mask".

So, bright and early -- before dawn's early light -- my Birding Buddy and I headed up north to check out a lovely spot that is always noisy and birdy in the spring.

Sadly, in the dark I grabbed the wrong canvas bag. I had plenty of bottled water, but no binoculars or camera.

OH NO!!!  Did your birding buddy have either?

I just came back from the dentist.

1.5 hours in the chair.

Thank god for novocaine and laughing gas and of course my favorite Ibuprofen 800mg

I hope it doesn't hurt too much tonight.

Hello!  I'm back from New York, New York.   I went to the Laurie Beechman Theater and saw "True Colors," a benefit for the Trevor Project.  There were about 12 performers-most were very good.  I honestly had never heard of any of them except our own Brent Barrett, but they were very talented.   Most of the perfomers sang 2 songs, but Brent only sang one ("Romantic Notions," which was great).  The audience was very enthusiastic--it's a very small place and I think there were less than 40 people.

What a co-inkydink!  I just read an article about the possibility of ‘Murphy Brown’ Returning to TV (http://xfinity.comcast.net/blogs/tv/2012/04/30/is-murphy-brown-returning-to-tv/).

That could be fun!

Well, my sister Linda is still in need of vibes. They went in today and blasted one of the two too-large kidney stones, but they couldn't find the other, so they will have to go in again next Monday and look again. That means she still has the stent in and will likely be on painkillers for most of the week. She's needed to catch up on her sleep and I think that will happen. But keep those vibes a'coming.

There's a local radio station, KBRD (http://www.kbrd.org/), that plays songs like this all the time.  I love it.  This is from the website (which streams 24 hours a day!):

Quote
Whether you like piano rolls, pre-1920 cylinders, 78s from the 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s or early 45s and mono LPs, this is your station. Over the air we transmit full bandwidth with uncompressed sound to beat even the fm stations in quality.
On the internet we maintain full spectrum by streaming in the original monaural and not wasting bandwidth. Better than CD quality.

:D
