I love Randy Newman's songs, but I'll bet there are a million I don't know.  "I Love L.A." is iconic for me, and the film songs are almost sometimes heartbreakingly beautiful.

Good morning, all! I've been up snce 6, but the past two hours have been writing emails to Dublin and the Library of Congress. The madman has look up on the computer the names of the foundation members and is sending requests for acknowledgement along with his hyperventilated credits in the world and stirring up more of a mess. This fool doesn't work for God; he is God!

So, I'm back to Toyland this morning to deal with the second song for Valerian's recital. While I'm there I will proof another ROBERTA number and work on my recording schedule.

Too much to do.

Yes, it is autobiographical.

At one point, Kirk Douglas was attached to this project, but we couldn't get the financing.  The studios and the networks felt it was "too soft".

Thursday in Indiana!

Nothing happening, as usual.

The Ebay seller sent me a note that read:  "I am sorry.  I sent your camera to the wrong person, and I don't know how long it will take.   So I am giving you a refund."

To me, that means...."I think I can get more $$ for the damned thing, sucker!"  So now I have to start looking all over again.

Thursday morning greetings!  We had a delightful early Mother's Day dinner last night with my Mom and Rob & Mary Linda at Montgomery Inn.  The ribs, as usual, were delicious.  I gave my Mom some 8x10 (so she can see them) prints of some photos from our recent trip to Michigan and Rob & ML gave me a UC thermal coffee mug to replace the one Rob lost at work.  He'd given me the original for my birthday his freshman year (2004).

Re the New York Times article on why Leap of Faith failed.  They have all sorts of wags saying all sorts of things giving all sorts of reasons, all of them based on this new "movie business" model of how to do Broadway - they didn't have a big enough box-office draw star (movie business model), the film brand it was based on wasn't current enough (movie business model) - all of it twaddle and ridiculous and while they are spouting this "knowledgeable" tripe they keep neglecting to mention one word - ONE word - and that word is: ONCE.  Based on a movie few saw and know.  No stars.  Small.  And: A hit.

Leap of Faith failed for one reason - it was not good.  It wasn't good in LA thanks to a director who doesn't have a clew how to guide the team writing a new musical and whose ideas about this musical were pedestrian, and from what I've read and been told, it was worse in New York, thanks to a director imposing some weird concepts on the show.  Yes, they did work on the show between LA and NY but they didn't do the right work, if there WAS right work with this particular show.  And they would have known that if the work had actually been done during the LA run, which is where work SHOULD have been done.  Little to no work was done.  So, they do the work in a vacuum, and the composer tweets how marvelous it all is because he has lost all objectivity, and they invite all their pals to a workshop of the new version, just like they invited all their friends to the workshop of the OLD version, with the same result: Their friends clap them on the back, say GREAT show don't change a thing, and they all believe because they want to believe - especially apt with a show called Leap of Faith.  And IF someone had some notes you can bet that the producers and/or writers didn't listen, thinking, "But everyone else loved it."

They found out differently in previews, but in previews it is too late to make sweeping changes, thanks to the other problem new shows now face - they are slaves to their technology.  When Sugar was doing its out of town tryout, at some point Mr. Merrick had the sets thrown out and completely redesigned - WHILE THE SHOW WAS RUNNING in the few cities it was trying out in.  You could do that then - you can't do it now.  That's why the out of town tryout was so necessary and important - they could work on the fixing of the show in a tense, heated atmosphere where they HAD to do the work, HAD to put in massive changes, and could then see IMMEDIATELY what effect they were having on a REAL audience not filled with back-clapping cronies.

Leap of Faith never had a chance because in eight years of the development process, no one figure out how to tell the story well.  It's really that simple.  Would Hugh Jackman have helped the show limp along for a while - sure.  Would a Joe Shmo in the lead have been fine if the show were brilliant and delivering - absolutely.  In the end, one has to blame the creative team for not solving things, two directors (more actually) who kept taking them into wrong places, and, most importantly, an idea that was perhaps wrong-headed to begin with - turning a middling and not successful film into a big musical - the appeal was surely not a reason to do it - that appeal being, "Wow, we can have all this gospel music, that always brings people to their feet."

But it's easier to blame all the wrong things.  The team responsible for Leap of Faith have talent.  Its lead producers are like all of today's lead producers - and to be kind let's just say they are not David Merrick.  They don't know how to talk to a creative team to get them to do what's necessary - you can't always be sweet about these things, even if the creative team is made up of successful people - in the end, all that matters is fixing your show.

Loving Disc One of the Victor Herbert set.  Makes me miss playing for classical singers.

I think the great Margaret Jane Wray will become of the the prominent Wagnerian sopranos very soon. Wait till you hear her "Kate Smith" number!

I have too many favorites, but  I do like these immensely:
Indian Summer and everything Rebecca Luker sings
    In Mondeslicht
    Heart O'Mine
    When the Sixty-ninth Comes Back
    Tell Me, Daisy
    I'm Going In The Movies

There are 5-10 I'm not crazy about.

And I am home from Toyland. I may run to the market for some water cress and alfalfa sprouts before I buckle down on this DEAREST ENEMY rehearsal schedule.

Chaplin also write songs, like "Smile" and the Petula Clark standard "This is My Song" - my guess is it's the Little Tramp character that's silent, and Chaplin himself will be very vocal in sharp contrast.   But I haven't read anything about this treatment of his life.

Quote
I have done a great deal of reading about the two of them, and the two features I seem to like best about the nook are the lighting and the battery life. For the trip to Europe, the longer battery life will come in handy.

Is that the Nook or the Nook Color?

Whatever you decide on make sure you turn off the internet access to keep the charge longer.

On our last trip I carried a couple of paperbacks to be safe and never needed them, but then we had night flights so I didn't read as long as usual.

I got a Paul Glass classical CD in the mail today - it's the only classical CD of his music in existence (I may do something about that if terms can be met) - but this is one of the most ineptly packaged CDs EVER - forget the ugliness of it, but let's just tell you what happens when you put the CD in your computer.  It opens in iTunes and there we see the track information.  The first four tracks, instead of being the four tracks of his symphony, are labeled with the pieces subsequent to those four tracks.  Therefore they run out of track names and call everything else "bonus track" - I fixed all that.  Then they attribute this wonderful Paul Glass CD to Philip Glass.

Too bad.  I find focusing on suspense novel easier when I don't feel well.

If you love MGM musicals and, especially, the Conrad Salinger sound that goes hand-in-hand with them, I invite you to check this out.  It's from the 2011 BBC Proms (late last August).

I think it is much better to have an early Mother's Day lunch, restaurants are too crowded on the actual day.
How right you are. The  worst day of the year to eat out is Mother's Day. Valentine's Day is next.

An interesting comment in Charles McNulty's review of "Follies":

Although its 1971 premiere is more distant to us now than the Weismann Follies is to Sally and Phyllis, the show, which combines extraordinary Broadway showmanship with the consciousness of Proust, is still light years ahead of us.

I would seriously doubt that Mr. McNulty, for all his posturing, was out of knee pants when the original Follies premiered.

For some reason i never feel like reading when i'm under the weather.

Too bad.  I find focusing on suspense novel easier when I don't feel well.

I started reading again today. I have 2 books from the library plus the one i am reading from the library.

Plus 2 ebooks i really want to read in the next 2 weeks.

Plus I won a copy of Insurgent (the sequel to the highly acclaimed dystopian Divergent). So i really want to read that. But i think it's like 600 pages long.

I had to give back a bunch of new release library books that i really want to read. I'll have to take them out again in a few weeks when i've caught up.

I wonder who will get voted off of American Idol tonight? I hope it's not Phillip. I know he's not the best singer of the four left. But there is something about him. He has so much star quality and charisma. I love watching him sing. I love the sound of his voice. And i love the quirky way he sings. Plus he is so cute! :)

John Wilson and his orchestra!

Matthew Ford is the vocalist.  The number lasts about 9 minutes.  Ford sings the opening 3 minutes and the rest of pure MAGIC.

John Wilson is a friend of mine! I mentioned having coffee with hm about a month ago. If you have a nonregional DVD payer, his Rodgers & Hammerstein and Hollywood Proms concerts are really fine.

I have the DVD of proms Celebration of MGM Musicals, but I've not found the R&H one.  I do have an all-region blu-ray player.

Wilson is beyond fabulous.  He has an ear that gets things RIGHT!

ABC has renewed a slew of its most popular returning series Thursday ahead of making any new pickups.

Producers on four dramas--"Once Upon A Time," "Grey's Anatomy," "Castle," "Revenge"--and three comedies "Modern Family," "The Middle" and "Suburgatory" all received official notification they're getting another season.

Not on the list but still not counted out: "GCB."

None of the renewals are a surprise.

More to come...

Any news on BODY OF PROOF?  We'd heard that its status was questionable because, even though popular, it didn't have the right demographic.

Anyway, we asked some questions, got some answers and can only hope that when a couple of e-mails go out, that we'll get more people at the next meeting.  We definitely can't (and don't want to) do this all by ourselves.
