And a very happy haineshisway.com birthday to the errant and truant and probably gone forever dear reader Sam. I probably know the reasons, which has nothing to do with this here site, me, or anyone else here.

What, I'm the first one up this fine vertiginous Saturday a.m.? It's because I must drive from Cincinnati to Columbus and later to Morgantown WV. Then back home tomorrow evening. I must look up and look down whilst watching my speed on I-71 and I-70.

More than happy to provide a body and purchase a book or books on June 15th.
Typed July at first. Which is odd, because on July 15th I'll be far far away in the Sunrise State.
Or is it Sunshine State. I shouldn't try to type or think this early.

Thanks also to DR ELMORE for the BLONDES report. I have only seen the movie.....but from the moment Jane and Marilyn appeared onscreen in those red dresses and singing "Two Little Girls from Little Rock" - it became one of my favorites.
And I also especially liked it when that man accused Marilyn of marrying his son for his money.....and Marilyn replied: "I'm not marrying him for his money.....I'm marrying him for YOUR money!" And when she doesn't know how to wear a tiara and toys with putting it on one breast or the other and is astonished when Jane tells her to put it on her head: "I just adore finding new places to wear diamonds!"
And of course Jane, who after coming up with a plan to get the film out of the pocket of the detective: "If between the two of us, we can't get a man's pants off, we're not worthy of the name woman."

I enjoyed seeing my nephew's band last night, in a rather small jernt called Locals Only. Everyone in the band is a fine musician, and their songs are good. I am glad I went. This was their third gig in a couple of months, and now they are off until September - unless something else comes up.....
The other band was good, too - but their drummer didn't show up....show it was hard to tell about their music.

Good morning, all! By the time I got to bed it was 1am, about 2-3 hours later than I usually turn off the lights, so I slept in this morning until 8:15. I remember dreams but they're quite vague now.
DR John G, the Styne estate is funding a new recording of BLONDES. Rob Berman didn't have the recording dates last night, but I think the recording will be wonderful, and it will be great to have more of the score.
DR JRand61, I, too, love the Monroe-Russell film, but it's not as funny as the stage libretto, which is closer to the novel, and I think you would love the novel. I do think the great Monroe is funnier than Hilty, but the film's a different show nd Hilty's not giving the musical the drop-dead comedy center it demands; the people around her, expecially the two the French attorneys Robber (Robert) and Louee, are so outrageous, that Hilty seems cautious and too real, and not funny enough. Miss Piggy wold be a great Lorelei.
Since Monroe's line about finding new places to wear diamonds is in the novel, I was surprised it wasn't in the show last night, I wonder if David Ives' "stage adaptation" cut it? I like him personally and I love his plays, but Im not always happy with his Encores! edits.
So, today I'm here until 11 or so, then I head downtown to the Encores! luncheon, which I have not attended for some time. I'll see a few friends and a few people I'd never want to see again, and I'll hopefully make a few new ones. After that, I'm back here to chill out.

I just read his column. I disagree with both him and Brantly: Hilty's good, but she's not a natural clown and she thinks too realistically. Good moments do not make the role. She might be better with another week of rehearsal, but wouldsn't everyone?

Saturday morning greetings! My friend Tamara and I had an interesting trip to the University of Cincinnati to hear Myriam Chancy speak and read from 2 of her novels. Friday afternoon traffic made for nerve-wracking trips both ways, but we stopped at Panera for a light supper and that calmed me down quite a bit. I vegged in front of the TV with Richard and went to bed early.

I'm up. Helper has been here already. And had an e-mail from the East Coast Singer - who missed her flight. She got there "a few minutes late to check-in" - you really have to be more than a few minutes late to miss a flight, but I suspect it's not the first time. She'll arrive now at one and come straight here, but it's an hour less work time now - I originally said we had to work a full week - and even that's not enough - to shape and change and fix. That became three days. I think you can see the problem and it's not one that's going to change, I think. So, we'll do what we can in three days, and we'll have three days in NY before that show.

I've been back from the Encores! luncheon for about 90 minutes. I've spent the time redoing the furniture to open up space for the air conditioner. I saw a couple of friends I hadn't seen in far too long, and it was a lot of fun.

For the past few years (I can't begin to remember for how long), I have been working on a cookbook of Mom's recipes. There were questions on so many. She'd have ingredients listed but no directions (or vice versa).
Well, yesterday I remembered that she turns 85 this July, so I have decided to finish this cookbook. I've roped in some friends to do the copy editing after me. And the fun begins again in earnest.

I just spent an hour on the phone with her getting the questions answered on the last dozen recipes. She has no memory of some of these cookies, which she made more than 50 years and not a lot since.
But she knows what to do. So, she can take the sketch of a recipe or the ingredients and figure out how to do that.

We did everything from an odd gingersnap that uses oil instead of butter or shortening to something called Velvet Cookies with peanut butter in them. One recipe has a dough with nothing but butter, heavy cream and flour for the dough. You press the dough into sugar before baking it. Then you make sandwiches out of them with some butter cream frosting at the center. (I want a plate of those now.)

There are more than 125 cookie recipes, about 50 cake recipes, who knows how many pies, breads, etc.

Many of my favorites are the ones you never find anymore, such as a Tennessee jam cake and Transparent Pie. I have tried a number of the recipes to see if they work, but I haven't tried Pork Cake yet. High on my list of the ones yet to try.

I'd say i'm probably at about 70%. I still don't have my usual energy. But other than that I feel pretty decent. But i really need to do some hard core exercising. I hate the way i feel. Need to lose 10lbs. So i would like to start biking a lot. But i don't know if i should push myself. Because i'm not sure i have the energy.
Although i did go biking with my niece today for over an hour. But it doesn't take much energy to do that even though i'm always moving. The speed just isn't fast enough to tire me out!

I just knew what my almost 3 year old niece would say. And she didn't disappoint. "But i like french toast"

To clarify an earlier comment: The two publishers I'm looking at are not self-publishers that just print whatever you give them. But I'm instigating the publishing. Or rather, my sisters and I are.

Just had my favorite kind of salad with dinner: sorrel, mint, chives, thyme, cilantro, parsley, tarragon and dill, all from the garden, tossed with a few spring field greens, a drizzle of olive oil and a few flakes of sea salt.

Finished with work session one. We ate first and discussed my problems with the act. Then we came back and I had her run it as we did it before, sans the one song I knew was getting cut. I made notes. We're adding Lanny's great arrangement of Kickin' the Clouds Away/I Can't Be Bothered Now, and I was trying to figure out where that would come. Basically after hearing the show again I was satisfied that the material and the point of the show is fine - all the set-ups are not right yet, and that's the biggest problem we have to deal with, the patter. But other things were bothering me, mostly from a storytelling point of view - things just seemed out of place in the show order - for me, a show has to have clear forward momentum in terms of storytelling. So, the last third of the show had one problematic song (great song, wrong place) that was making us go backward in terms of storytelling, and it just seemed wrong to me. It took me an hour of futzing, but we made a new order, switching around four songs - that's what we'll start with tomorrow - no patter at all - just to make sure the song order feels good. Then we'll go number to number and discuss exactly the function of each section of patter and how it has to set up the song and the point of it.

Listening to the newly released complete soundtrack to Rosemary's Baby - I, of course, would have killed to do this, but I'm not tending to get the A titles from Paramount, something we're trying to address, since I prepaid for a lot of the transfer work done. Lady in a Cage is fun, of course, but Rosemary's Baby, in addition to being something personal for me, would have sold very quickly. It's great to have the score. It's mono and from a variety of sources, but the stereo album rerecording is there, too, so you have the best of both worlds.

Tomorrow I will cut down a tree that is about 4 inches in diameter. It's pretty tall so I'll have to be careful not to hit the garage. It really needs to come down now. It's growning into a big old tree and there isn't room for both in the same spot.

Back from the staged reading of Come Back, Little Sheba. I'd love to see a first-class revival of this where the actors have enough rehearsal time and with a brilliant cast. Faith Prince would be great to lead that revival - she's wonderful and with only one rehearsal.

I just listened to this recording at work yesterday and it's absolutely beautiful. We did it when I was going to Western Washington University and fell in love with it.
Carl Orff: Carmina Burana (http://www.amazon.com/Orff-Carmina-Burana-Carl/dp/B000001G5X). We also did this when I was at Western. This was the very first CD that I ever owned.

BK, Thursday I was so exhausted from driving all over town that I came home around six or so, fell asleep reading and did not get up till ten that evening when the phone rang. Friday I had to see my friend Pat (whom you may remember from the memorabilia shows) and then an early night to catch my plane on Saturday. I'm home now after spending twelve hours or so in various states of transit. But I got to spend probably more time with you than anyone (even Larry who I was staying with, but didn't see all that much of). Three terrific meals and your great cabaret show! We were so happy you came to Cat & Fiddle and got to see Julieanne. I've decided LA is a nice place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit there. The driving is worse than when I lived there and the parking has become torturous. Am listening to the sublime Genghis Kahn and the latest edition of your scribblings now grace the other volumes of the Bruce Kimmel memorial library on a shelf all their own.
