Last night, we had a great opening night for "Good Night Moon." The audience was more than 75% filled...and since the place only holds about 120 people, it was a pretty full house. Everything went really well. At the beginning of the final preview the night before, I accidentally set off a sound cue early. Last night, I accidentally set of a sound cue early at the end of the show. Spoo.
It'll be perfect this afternoon. :D

Good morning, all! Ir's looking like a quiet weekend, which is fine, I have a lot of socalizing tomorrow, but today is quiet. I'm thinking I may see HYSTERIA this afternoon;there are shows at 1:10 amd 3:15 and I could make either.
Yesterday, I had two things hit me about my old job at the Drama Book Shop. As I was waiting for the bus for the physical exam, I ran into the husband of a rather frightening lady who had been the manager when I first started working there. She and he had been married in the book shop. When I asked about her, I learned that she had died last November. I believe she was younger than I, which is sad, ut she had been in poor health for years. I didn't dislike her; I never trusted her, but I was sorry t learn of her death.

I slept poorly last night: at my physical exam, I was given two vaccinations, one in each arm. The tetanus shot has caused no physical problems in my left arm, but the pneumonia vaccination is having a reaction in my right arm, which was painful to sleep on. It's still aching.
I may run down to Toyland for a bit and catch the movie on my way back uptown.

It always reminds me of Mrs. Chauvinet in HARVEY who keeps pointing out people at the party and asking who they are.....when she is told, she responds every time....."Why I thought (s)he was dead!"

I found this obituary; she died last August. I am happy to see that her mother Doris Grumbach, is still alive. I hadn't seen Doris, who seemed ancient in 1983, in 30 years. She's a wonderful novelist, who wrote the haunting CHAMBER MUSIC, a beutiful, elegiac novel based on American composer Edward MacDowell.

It seems that my stomach problems have resurfaced and basically incapacitated me for the past few days and this morning has not startd off well. I've been sleeping a lot. My insurance company has given the go ahead to repeat a test I did last year that was not completely successful the first time.

Vixmom, typically the earnest money is held in escrow until closing. But because the buyers put so little down (way less than 1%), our realtor added a clause that they had to release those funds as soon as the appraisal came in. It kind of "hooks" them into the deal, or at the very least gives us a pittance for our time and trouble should the deal not close.

As for critters and such: Rats, phooey. Make it creepy crawlies. Spiders. Certain insects. Sea creatures.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood.
We have errands to run and things to do.
There is a street fair on 6th Avenue between 14th Street and 23rd Street. Ugh, I have grown to hate them. They are nothing but a bother.
We watched one episode of a Britcom/dramadey called Cheers and Tears. We took it out because one of the stars is Martin Clunes. There are three episodes. We only watched one. We both found that, while it had moments, it's filled with annoying people doing stupid things and the fun moments were outweighed by the silliness. I'll return it to the library today. Nothing lost but 90 minutes on a Friday evening.

TOD: Probably being buried alive, though heights are fairly scary, too. I've confronted the last fear by periodically doing something such as skydiving, hang gliding, or ziplining. I've never asked to be interred, however. Think I'll skip that one. ;)

Yes, they should be likeable/loveable. When I first moved to NY 32 years ago they were an enjoyable diversion. Then they started happening every weekend and 2 or 3 companies control them and they are all the same. The same sock vendors, the same sheet vendors, the same food vendors, the same everything vendors. There is no unique feel to any of them. The vendors that are out here today will be at a different location tomorrow and for all of the summer and into the fall. All they do is block traffic and make a mess of the street for a few hours.

In that sense they're exactly like the little carnivals out here in the sticks that are set up and run by the same couple of companies. Sad.

Good morning. Off to a 5 hour Grease rehearsal this morning. Which equates to 5 hours of chaos. I just sit at the piano and be patient. Perhaps I'll post from the chaos.

I remember a NYC street fair from my childhood when I was back staying with my Uncles. I think it was in Little Italy and for a youngish kid like I was, it was incredible. I had never seen anything like it before and just remember walking through the throngs of people, amazed at the colors and sounds.

I still remember it was a really hot and humid summer day, but there was a nice breeze blowing and the fair had all these little colorful pennants strung up between buildings over the street, and they were all fluttering in the wind.

You can't even walk through the Little Italy one. You can only make forward progress by letting yourself be carried along by the crowd. I'd always wanted to go to that one, and did one day maybe a decade ago. Never again. I did always love how they crammed in that ferris wheel.

At least one person takes the birthday person's head and at least one person takes their legs. And you lift them horizontally in the air. Once for each year and then once for good luck.

Yes, the San Gennaro (sp) Festival (the Little Italy location) is not at all fun. As Chas said, you can't really move. You are swept along by hordes or people eating bad food and pretending they are Italian.

In my opinion cats should be kept inside for their safety and not to annoy the neighbors.

I'm not familiar with this custom. Paddling on the behind, once for each year, used to be a custom I never followed. Bumping sounds like fun, for a kid anyway.

Probably half serious.
Except for knowing how to write a press release, I really had not formal training or contacts as a publicist when I opened my office. I learned by doing the job, blindly at first.
Certainly I got proficient and became successful, but that feeling of being "found out" never really leaves you.

I cannot tell you how wonderful HYSTERIA is. I enjoyed it immensely. It's intelligent, silly, ribald, moving, and altogether something I recommend.
The cast is wonderful, and the screenplay is about the hypocrisy of high Victorian society and th paradoxes: Rupert Everett is marvelous as the "sexual deviant" son of a newspaper magnate and his wife, played by the wonderful Gemma Jones, who look out for our leading man, High Dancy, who plays Mortimer Granville, a doctor whose intelligence prevents him from working well with ingnorant fools ("It's no wonder that morgues are situated next to hospitals" he cries in resentment), Jonathan Pryce is an arrogant prig whose two daughters represent the "proper Vicotrian maiden" and the suffragette/feminist, played to a tee by Maggie Gyllenhaal. My friend Kim Criswell plays an Italian opera singer suffering from hysteria who has an orgasm needing ro be seen to be believed, but all the ladies waiting for treatment are funny and most interesting. Anna Chancellor, the evil Caroline Bingley from the Colin Firth PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, puts in an appearance as a patient. That I found very funny.
The show would be wonderful on Masterpiece Theatre, but PBS might have a fit over the ribaldry. The scenery and costumes, from the slums to Buckingham Palace, are really excellent. Go see this movie.
It's quite extraordinary, and yet it's so much more than a film about the invention of the vibrator; it's a wonderful study of a period where so much technology and advances are being made in all fields that affect our own lives. It's also quite a wonderful love story.

Did you see the play about this, the one that Laura Benanti was in? Is this a film version of that or a movie on the same topic?

There are people on IMDB claiming the movie is a ripoff of IN THE NEXT ROOM, but I don't know the play. It certainly doesn't use the name of the actual doctor, Mortimer Granvlle, nor does the plot from the review sound remotely similar:

I bought berries! Wild Blueberries from Trader Joe's. I love all the major berries, but the BLUES are something special. I, uh, then picked up a quarter of French Vanilla. To serve as a carrier, you understand.
I guess this wasn't my week to give up carbing.

I have to make a pasta salad for my niece's party tomorrow. And I have to decide if I am going to make some kind of chip dip. She has those scoops. I have sour cream but do not feel like making seven layer dip.

Years ago we rented an RV and had the best vacation with our children & one of our three dogs. While driving through Maine we picked wild blueberries that were incredible and had blueberry pancakes almost everyday until the blueberries were gone.

Sounds nice. I'm doing laundry after a good workout at the gym. I finally returned to the pool yesterday and had an entire lane all to myself for half an hour. It was heaven.

Watching a scary movie and then took a break to swim for thirty minutes. I've been in this house for close to eight years now and in all that time I don't think I've used the pool a half dozen times. I'm making up for that this summer - part of the reason I didn't is because with the old pump and heater it literally took five hours to heat the pool - with the new stuff it's heated in thirty minutes.

Oh, all of that. I still miss the abundance of L.A. Mexican food. Later, visiting Dallas a few times, I got to know some of the glories of Tex-Mex. And Texas BBQ. It's all such wonderful stuff. It's a shame we can't just spend our lives putting food in our mouths.

Oh, all of that. I still miss the abundance of L.A. Mexican food. Later, visiting Dallas a few times, I got to know some of the glories of Tex-Mex. And Texas BBQ. It's all such wonderful stuff. It's a shame we can't just spend our lives putting food in our mouths.
I'm very sorry for you, but Dallas Tex-Mex doesn't begin to touch what we have here in San Antonio. And sorry, Druxy, but Austin's Tex-Mex doesn't, either. It's like a whole new world. But then again, step across the border, and it's a whole new culinary world there, too.

Since both DR Jane and DR Vixmom had no clue what I was talking about I wonder if there is a different term in the US. It is not done so much now but we did it a lot when I was little. At least one person takes the birthday person's head and at least one person takes their legs. And you lift them horizontally in the air. Once for each year and then once for good luck.

Vixmom, in my vast experience with real estate purchases (that is a joke, by the way), we have never used lawyers. The realtors and the title people did the paperwork.
We bought a house, I sold my mother's house, and we bought my son a condo. No lawyers needed.

Today we saw the tour of La Cage aux Folles. It was probably the best show they have done for years (although we also loved South Pacific).
Sadly, the star could not sing, but Zaza brought down the house.

Going to see a "Gypsy" matinee tomorrow. Community production with some folks I know. I'd been asked to play "strings" on keyboard (they were having trouble getting people) but couldn't due to last week's road trip.

We just got back from a really interesting performance that one of Betsy's co-workers was in. It was in this huge warehouse that was virtually unfindable, even with Google directions. The warehouse houses a dance class where they work with these giant 2 or 3 story tall pieces of silk that they climb and do routines in and on. Here's a not very good pic from my phone:

It seems that my stomach problems have resurfaced and basically incapacitated me for the past few days and this morning has not startd off well. I've been sleeping a lot. My insurance company has given the go ahead to repeat a test I did last year that was not completely successful the first time.

Today, "Good Night Moon" had a good audience. I didn't get to eat anything until after the show, then I came home and watched four of the last five episodes of "Who Do You Think You Are?" and the last two episodes of "Cougar Town." I still have a lot of TV watching to catch up on.

Last night, we had a great opening night for "Good Night Moon." The audience was more than 75% filled...and since the place only holds about 120 people, it was a pretty full house. Everything went really well. At the beginning of the final preview the night before, I accidentally set off a sound cue early. Last night, I accidentally set of a sound cue early at the end of the show. Spoo.
It'll be perfect this afternoon. :D
