Well this is pretty cool...HERE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8KC7a4K3cI&feature=related) is a live TV performance of Julie Andrews singing "Show Me."  I love the staging!

I saw "When a Stranger Calls" in New York, the same week I saw "Time After Time". I also saw "Apocalypse Now" that week in 70mm at the Ziegfeld.

Good morning, all!  I was dreaming about performing in a play with several of the singers on  the Herbert songs when I awoke. I remember little else now.

This afternoon I have a coffee date with critic Andy Propst at 4:30 and a party at Steve Ross' after that. The guests of honor are Sheila Smith, George S. Irving, and Jack Lee. So, firstthing this morning, I am off to Toyland to use the office compuuter to burn some DEAREST ENEMY files. Then I can turn everything in to Rodgers & Hammerstein and consider the work on the score completed.

DR Ben, thanks for last night's HYSTERIA reviews. Did you notice that two of them, from Chicago and LA, are the same? The New Jersey review irritated me with its superior attitude; the film is much better than that pompous ass makes it appear.  DR Gerge will love it for Ms Criswell's scenes, if nothing else. I'd never seen Maggie Gyllenhaal in anything before, and I thought she was quite wonderful.

No, I didn't notice that they are the same. I didn't read the complete Chicago review. Yes, the NJ review is a bit full of itself isn't it. I do like Miss Gyllenhaal. I'll have to see the movie.

Anthony is going to a concert at Carnegie Hall this afternoon with a friend and then we are going to dinner at East of Eighth afterwards. I am otherwise engaged so I am not attending the concert but I am free afterwards for dinner.

Sheila Smith is great. Loved her on the "Sugar" recording and in "Taking My Turn."

I believe "WHEN A STRANGER CALLS" was originally a short film made by the same director and was just the first 20 minutes. It may have been his student thesis film

I saw "When a Stranger Calls" at the theatre when it came out and was very confident that it wouldn't scare me because I thought I knew what the kicker was with the movie.  What I didn't realize was that it was only the first 20 minutes.  It was all unknown and all suspense after that. When I  got home that night after feeling like I'd had a heart attack in the theatre (I don't handle these things well), I would not let my dog leave my side for the rest of the evening. I think I  may even just carried her around the house with me while I locked all the doors.

I think Colleen Dewhurst portrayed the perfect picture of loneliness in that movie, and there's an image of her walking home from the bar (near Bunker Hill maybe?) that still haunts me.

May I just say that people on the internet are idiots (technical term) sometimes.  A self appointed expert who went after me about To Kill a Mockingbird (until everyone from BK to Robert A. Harris disagreed with him) is now on a tear about The Sting.  I truly do not get why some people are so exercised about things like this.

For a moment I thought today's title was a reference to former Utah Senator Jake Garn.  :)

Jake was an officer of my father's and he and my Dad managed to save Utah's Fort Douglas from being bulldozed in the 1970s.   Some of the Fort had to be given up to the encroaching University of Utah, but the bulk of the most historic buildings (including my Dad's museum) are still there and they're lovely.

My parents were both very fond of Jake.  The same could not be said of their reaction to Orrin Hatch.  :)

Off to church, then to SF maybe.  It depends if we want to deal with post "Bay To Breakers" crowds.  It might be late enough so we don't have to worry.  We want to take the DP's mom to the Vera Bradley store and then to dinner and dessert.  That may be rethought, though.   It's a lovely day here in the Bay Area.  I hope we get out and do something exciting.

I've been watching the Metroplitan Opera's video of their 2011 baroque pasticcio The Enchanted Island; it's too long, but some of the scenic effects are wonderful, but I gotta tell youl, the only thing worse than a countertenor is two of them, no matter how well they sing! Placido Doningo was a hoot as Neptune, and Luca Pisaroni's Caliban is wonderful.

We went to the 3D showing of THE AVENGERS as the time was convenient.  It was interesting in 3D but I also found it distracting.  I still think HUGO was the movie to have seen in 3D.

There was a preview of the new 3D FRANKENWEENIE that had me crying.  It begins with the boy telling his mother he didn't want to keep his dog in his heart, he wanted the dog back.  We didn't need to see that.

Listening to the first part of our master.  One track has VERY bad wow and flutter, so I've suggested a little edit of thirty seconds that remove all of it - if he can do that smoothly that will be very helpful.  It's a wonderful score from a classic low-budget sci-fi film, with a score composed by Hugo Friedhofer, Franz Waxman, Aaron Copland, Leith Stevens, Victor Young, Hans J. Salter, and a few others.  Yes, you read that right.

Oh man, just last fall someone told me about a film with the music of a bunch of those composers.  Might have been more than one such film, of course.  Wracking my brain now.

This is a pretty rare occurrence - some films were obviously tracked with library music, but this film was not only designed with music for other films, it was newly-recorded back then.  Reason?  Musician's Union strike.  The film was low-budget and this saved them hiring a composer and then still having to record it overseas.  So, some smart person went through a lot of music and did a lot of editing and pasting and the result is really good.  It's like they'd temp-track a film today, but instead of replacing the temp track they just used it, albeit newly recorded.  The film itself carries no music credit.

Yes, newly recorded for the film in question.  Might be the same one.  All I remember is finding the composers referenced on the film's IMDb page.  Can't reach my friend till tomorrow to ask what it was.

It was my niece's birthday party at 4pm. There was way too much food. My sister's mother in law showed up with 4 huge dishes of food that my sister didn't know were coming. There was some really good Filipino food (not sure if she made it or her sister). But there were eggrolls and noodles. Love those two dishes.

I didn't really eat that many of the dishes. So i will eat some tomorrow. Hopefully. Although i did take home some of the stuff i made. And a hamburger that i didn't get to eat.

I'm watching the first film in the Van Veeteren series - another Swedish detective thing - very good so far.  The character in film one is retiring - of course he gets brought back to work on cases, but in his retirement he buys and runs an antiquarian bookstore, so that's fun.

The party was interesting. Sheila Smith and her husband were great and I love the great MD Jack Lee. I have worked with George S. Irving and I love his work, but i don't think I like him much personally. I hd nice visits with Michael Feingold and Jack Lee. I saw Zak Stains there. At the end of the night we saw a new documentary about Doris Eaton Travis, who died last year at 106. Her first Broadway show was the Zeigfeld Follies of 1918. Her sister Mary Eaton sang the Victor Herbert song "When The Right One Comes Along" in the Follies.

And the poster is great. Third billing after Cole Porter and Moss Hart. That's tremendous.

Sunday Show Vibes for DR GEORGE.

Today at 3 p.m. EDST is the first session of auditions for THE CURIOUS SAVAGE which I am directing.  I hope to have a good turnout today....although I also have another session tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Thanks, Jack!  It actually went quite well today.  All of my sound cues were executed perfectly...for once. ;) Now, I just have to remember everything for Thursday's show.

And Audition Break Legs Vibes to you!

Today was the first "Titus" auditions for Theater Artists Olympia, but the show and the auditions overlapped.  I'm going to tomorrow night's audition.

Yes...quite a bit longer.  About a dozen songs expand the evening to a two act, full-length theater experience. :D

Back from "Gypsy" which was damned good.  Sadly, the establishment worships at the altar of total amplification so that NOW EVERYTHING SOUNDS LIKE THIS.  It sounds to me like they've got a quality system, but everything IS TURNED UP TO 11 AND THERE IS NO NUANCE OR RELIEF WHATEVER.

I'm running the microphone board for "Good Night Moon" and I'm really trying not to do that.  Fortunately, our stage manager can hear the balance and has me tweak the mics when necessary.

Finished with Mad Men - not a great episode and only three more left, I'd say this series has pretty much run out of gas - I've liked two, I think, from this season - not a good batting average.
