Ginny, just wanted to check in. Unfortunately, both Tuesday and Wednesday are no-gos for us. Things going on at work and other places. I think you're leaving for DC on Thursday so we will miss you this trip. Sorry.
I will, however, be at the Book Signing on Friday, June 15th, 2012 at the Drama Book Shop on 40th Street. Don't know how long afterward I will stay though because the next day, Saturday the 16th we are heading out very early for a weekend in New Jersey for a Wedding and won't be back until sometime Sunday.

The 10 part Swedish/Danish co-production "The Bridge" ended last night. It's been an excellent series, well acted, directed and written although it was let down by the ending. A second series is planned.

Good morning, all! I was out way too late and up far too early. UnlessJoshie needs help at Encores! today, I'm staying close to home and not doing much else.
BK, I don't keep up with Theatermania much since it dropped Peter Filichia, so I hadn't seen Andy's review. Thanks for posting it. I knew he he had read the book because he had mentioned it in one of his emails about meeting up. I enjoyed meeting him, and I hope we'll become friends. We went to the French Roast, where my beloved goddaughter Charlotte was waiting tables. As we parted, he mentioned something about your visit in June, and I thought, that would be nice if it happened.
I have no more news this morning. A trip to Staples, and, later, a trip to the post office, as well as the EILEEN libretto will take up my day, along with, at some point, when I start thinking clearly, a phone call to our DR Ginny.

I saw a Superhero film on TV, "Captain America: The First Avenger" which I actually liked and which wasn't just mindless action and CGI.

TOD:
If the group I am hanging out with goes bowling, I go.....usually end up with a score of about 160-181. In fact 181 was my highest score ever.
My favorite bowling story is when the show I was stage managing challenged another show running at the same time to a match.....it was The Heidi Chronicles VS. The Bad Seed. We managed to win!

Practically no bowling history whatever. No one in my family bowled, even during the REAL bowling years. I went with someone or other as a kid, and performed miserably at it. Back in the '90s there was a resurgence of it -- don't know if that was widespread, or just among a group of friends in the city, but we went one night to the alley on University Place in NYC, with no intention on my part of trying to play, but it was fun to be there and watch. I'm one who gets into this kind of thing on a nostalgia basis. I appreciate the bowling alley as the archetypal 1950s blue collar social destination place -- complete with bar and what not! :)

I think the last three times I went bowling it was for various fundraisers. Lots of fun!

TOD: When I lived in a tiny town in Florida, there was little to do but go to the movies or go bowling, so a bunch of us went bowling for about a year. I never got good at it, but I did enjoy the beers. ;D

Monday morning greetings! It's pouring rain in Midtown, so we're easing into the day. Richard's been next door to "Smoky Mary's" for morning prayer and we've been downstairs for breakfast. We may put on our rain gear and walk over to the box office to try for the ONCE Wednesday matinee.

We took the Chinese kids bowling while they were here. They had an interesting technique: they would hold the ball with both of their hands in front of them, run up to the lane, stop abruptly and then just drop the ball. :)

We're going to be in your neighborhood this afternoon, at the Rubin Museum to see the illuminated manuscripts. We may head to Chat 'n' Chew for an early dinner before heading further downtown for HERRINGBONE.

I have theCD and like Irwin Kostal's arrangements, but I wish the songs were assigned to the correct characters and that the plot followed the original book a little more closely.

THE FACTS
In Manhattan, there is a plaque at the corner of Park Avenue and 37th Street, erected by the Mary Murray Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and commemorating Mary Lindley Murray, wife of Robert Murray, for her contribution to the American Revolution by delaying General William Howe and his overwhelming military force from intercepting General Isaiah Putnam's retreat on Bloomingdale Road to join General George Washington in the Bronx:
This tablet marks the geographic center of the farm known in revolutionary days as “Inclenberg,” owned by Robert Murray whose wife, Mary Lindley Murray (1726-1782), rendered signal service in the Revolutionary War.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
On 4 July 1776, the American Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence and declared the American Colonies independent of English domination. The first battles of the American Revolution were the Battles of Lexington and Concord on 19 April 1775, but the tension between the Colonies and British rule had been escalating for some time; the notorious Boston Tea Party had occurred in 1773.
After the Battle of Bunker Hill on 20 April 1775, General Isaiah Putnam (1718-1790) progressed to temporary commander of the American forces in New York, while waiting for the arrival of commander-in-chief George Washington (1732-1799). By March 1776, Washington had forced the British out of Boston, and joined Putnam in Manhattan. By mid-September, Washington and his army had moved north to the Harlem Heights, leaving Putman and his army situated on the Battery at the very bottom of the island.
On 15 September 1776, the British fleet landed 4,000 soldiers at Kip's Bay on the East River to establish order in Manhattan, separate the Colonies, and to break the Continental Army. It was imperative that General Putnam's forces march to Harlem before the British took control of the island.
And that's where the story of Dearest Enemy begins. The history is correct, but the events in this musical are completely fictional.

Have fun at the Rubin. You will indeed be just around the corner from us. The Rubin is a beautiful space. It used to be part of the old Barney's before they moved to the East Side. Chat and Chew has redecorated. Still the same fun food but less kitsch in the decor.

TOD: My folks used to bowl in a co-ed league and each had their own bowling balls, I believe. We used to go as a family and I have enjoyed bowling on and off over the years...with long periods of not doing it at all. In the mid-late nineties, I actually got rather good at it and, for a while, a group of cronies and I used to bowl every few months at some lanes in Burbank. It's one of the few sports I actually enjoy participating in. I think one of the reasons I like bowling is that you can pursue it as an individual sport and work toward your own personal best rather than it always being competitive and having to "beat" the other guy.

Frances Farmer was a member in good standing of the Ladies' Bowling League at St Joan of Arc Catholic Church. I have a suspicion that the beer was the best part of the game for Frances as well.

I love DEAREST ENEMY! Of all the 1920s and 1930s musicals that took Gilbert & Sullivan for their role model. I think it's the closest American equivalent. It was Rodgers & Hart's first Broadway show and they were trying to dazzle and produce something literate and charming. One of the critics caled it "a baby grand opera," which I believe is quite aprops.
As to my billing for JUBILEE; it's in the contract. The Porter Trust was very good to me on this show.
DR Ginny and I just spoke. They got their tickets for Wednesday's matinee of ONCE, and we're meeting for lunch at 2pm tomorrow.

In college, I was so lousy at team sports and swimming that the only phys ed requirement I did well in was bowling. I thnk I was in that phys ed class for three years of undergraduate school, and I loved it. I usually bowled one game with a very high score, got my team's spirits going, and then bowled the second game dreadfully, to everyone's chagrin.

March 1992 - The Heidi Chronicles goes bowling......but I forget the name of the show we competed against - and Theatre On The Square doesn't have an extensive production history on its website.

We just swam to the Jacobs and back and have ONCE tickets for the Wednesday matinee. Came back to the hotel to wring ourselves out before venturing out in the rain again.

As I listen to this cast recording, I'm appalled at the use of electronic instruments for such a period piece. Piano/Bass/Drums would have sufficed. I'm looking forward to the new recording, which I'm assuming will NOT include electronic instruments.

Friend gave me the name of two (2) 1950s flicks utilizing the existing film music of several composers, neither of which matches MR BK's very general description of the one we're waiting to hear about. Just to be safe in the meantime, since I subscribe to the "Neither a Spoiler Taker Nor Leaver Be" rule, mum shall be the word.

Blythe Danner wants to keep acting but a broken bone could change all that.
I love her but I sure hate her overly coy and overly sincere commercial. She was great when I worked with her at Williamstown in June, 2000.

I am with MR BK on last night's episode of MAD MEN.
I would have enjoyed seeing Harry interact with some of the new people at the agency rather than the story line they gave him last night.....going nowhere with nobody interesting....
And Lane's story is pretty boring......with Lane....and Megan, also.....doing things way out of character for them.

The funniest thing about that stupid Blythe Danner commercial is the wonderfully cheery backstage staff, all of whom just love, love, love Blythe and smile approvingly as she walks on stage. Unlike every single stage manager I have ever known. ;)

And yes that is a stage full of REAL SAND.....the show being produced at the same time was COASTAL DISTURBANCES....and we used their sand for an 11 p.m. performance of our show....usually drawing twice the audience numbers as they did....which did not please the COASTAL DISTURBANCES cast.

DR Ben, it finally hit us as we were waiting for our plane yesterday just how short this stay is. We're going to be in your neighborhood this afternoon, at the Rubin Museum to see the illuminated manuscripts. We may head to Chat 'n' Chew for an early dinner before heading further downtown for HERRINGBONE.
Have fun at the Rubin. You will indeed be just around the corner from us. The Rubin is a beautiful space. It used to be part of the old Barney's before they moved to the East Side. Chat and Chew has redecorated. Still the same fun food but less kitsch in the decor.
Well, we went to do an errand on the Upper East Side and ended up walking down Madison Ave. to 55th and across to one of our favorite restaurants, La Bonne Soupe, for a late lunch. We've decided that it's too late in the afternoon to do justice to the illuminated manuscripts at the Rubin, so we're relaxing a bit at the hotel before making our way to the Lower East Side to find the HERRINGBONE venue. "Flexibility" is one of our travel watchwords...

Glad to know La Bonne Soupe is still open. I love that place but haven't been for years. I'm almost never in that area. I might have to make a trip just to go to LBS.

DR Ben, I've been going to La Bonne Soupe for almost 35 years. The last time we were here it was closed for remodeling after a fire. I was so afraid it had, either, not reopened or become something different. Not to worry, it's exactly the same - just a bit more expensive. But, then, isn't everything?

I don't know the internal workings of Encores! but even I know that you ain't gonna see the shows that Musicals in Mufti present. There isn't an audience clamoring to see the likes of "Make a Wish," "Lolita, My Love" or "Three Wishes for Jamie," even for a weekend. There has to be some name attached or a famous song or some hook to get 'em in.

He was going to give me a shot of Novocain, but I remembered last time I got a permanent cap I went without, so that's what I did this time and it was just fine. I'll be back in a week-and-a-half for the next tooth. Then when I get back from New York I get that permanent porcelain cap and thus ends these dental problems.

I used to love bowling, but I haven't done it in years.
Not good for my back.
My wrist went first. Now of course my shoulder can't bowl. I remember impressing the children with my decent bowling skills, managing a good number of strikes. Craig really got into it and had a couple of bowling birthday parties. Keith bowled a lot before I met him and was pleased I enjoyed bowling. He was really surprised to find out I also watched professional bowling on tv which he enjoyed. Funny though, we never really watched it together.

I myself have always enjoyed bowling, but have never done it regularly as it is rather expensive. I do wonder if that is what made it a less desirable pastime over the years.
When I worked at Bi-Mart we had, for a short time, a bowling league. It was a lot of fun.
And of course as a little kid my parents were on a bowling league, so the sounds of a bowling alley are always very nostolgic for me.
And bowling is one of the few sports (live or on TV) that I can actually watch and stay interested in.

We had another bowling alley in Medford, DR ChasSmith, which was even more 1950s retro looking, but I could not find a photo of it. It still existed when last I visited down there a few years back, but I don't know if Roxyanne Lanes is still around or not.

Great photo of the bowling alley, MBarnum. Reminds me of one of my favorite Ida Lupino movies, Roadhouse, in which Richard Widmark owns a bowling alley, nightclub and community center place. Ida smokes and plays piano, and she leaves her unfiltered cigarette butts on the piano, leaving burn marks in her wake. "One for My Baby" was one of her songs. Then Widmark goes crazy and the fun begins.

Bowling was big in Buffalo when I was growing up. In college, we had to take at least two phys-ed courses. I took skiing and bowling.
At our first class we bowled a game. The idea was to improve the score from your first game as the semester went on. I don't think we knew that at the time.
By some fluke, I bowled a 182. I never got that high a score for the rest of the semester. Since i didn't improve, I got a C.

We are back from a fabulous evening on the Lower East Side. Skip was at the place where we had our drinks and snack beforehand and Fred was at the theatre when we arrived. It was a delight to see them both and seeing HERRINGBONE was a treat. B. D. Wong is an amazing performer - we were honored to meet him afterwards. We taxied back to our corner and stopped to pick up some munchies and a bottle of wine, which we're now enjoying.
