Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a blow out, and now it is time for you to post until the blown out cows come home.

Good morning, all.  Coffee is in hand.  Well, not exactly.  I need a third hand like the foreign gentleman in the diner in that Twilight Zone episode; that way, I could be sipping my coffee whilst typing this very post.

Friend and I drove up to Burlington, VT on a Saturday morning for the pure heck of it.  It was my first time in the upper reaches of NY and VT and I was enchanted by the number of still-operating mid-century motels and cabins, ice cream stands, and the lovely Sunset Drive-In where we watched the then-new "South Park" movie with locals who knew not the treasure they had.  Stayed at a just-then-converting-to-something-else Howard Johnson's which evoked memories of family trips long ago; visited Fort Ticonderoga; and briefly saw Lake George for my first time, again being blown away by the abundance of mid-century wonders, including their original A&W stand and Howard Johnson's restaurant -- still one of the three remaining, though this, sadly, might be its last year.  A perfect spontaneous overnight trip that felt more like three days for all we crammed in.

(Yes, DRs, by now you've guessed it.  I'm one of THOSE.  A Howard Johnson's aficionado.  I paid my respects for hours in the Times Square one before it was to be razed.)

Good morning, all! I slept really poorly last night; I guess it's the frustration with the leak, the check, schedule, the workload, same old news, but I could not settle. So, I ignored the alarm and slept in an extra hour. The final fragment of my last dream was in Carnegie Hall, I was sitting next to Robert Kimball, and I had a portable desk, and the aisles between the rows of seats were 2-3 feet wide; then I seemed to be getting prepped for surgery nd I woke up.

I'm still aimless today. I have no idea if I will hear from the plumber, so I'll work here. I have more work on my liner notes, so that's good. I'll call Joshie and hear how last night's Obama broadway event went, and I'll fret.

BK, I'm happy the tire situation went so smoothly. The rotalty check means one of two things: the book is selling really well or the lovely southern millionaires who mistreated you and the label that shall remain nameless are buying up all copies!

Meant to post this one for DR Elmore:  A few nights ago I took the Suskin orchestration book off the shelf and flipped through it again with a better understanding of what's there.  Will read it straight through soon.  Anyhoo, woke up the next morning from one of those very irritating REPEATING dreams in which I was stuck trying to play a section of some song.  Over and over and over.  It seemed like "Be Our Guest" from Beauty and the Beast, but wasn't quite.  Either I wasn't getting it right, or didn't know what came next, or -- whatever.  With dreams like that, you might as well have been awake for all the actual rest you were getting.

I usually have those Jesus-get-that-tune-out-of-my-head obsessions when I'm drugged out after surgery. I lie in that hospital bed and the blasted melody won't go away! It turns up, turns over, and turns up again like the proverbial bad penny. It won't turn off and it won't change to another! Usually, it's an insipid simple ditty like "Master of the House" that wants to worm inside your brain and eat it alive.

BLOW-OUT -- and not the great Brian De Palma movie.  Don't think I've had one while actually driving.  At least not at any great speed.  Flat tires happen so infrequently, though, that in my case, the first reaction is denial; or, more accurately, a completely wrong diagnosis as to what the problem is.

Glad to hear MR BK was able to avoid taking the Forest Lawn turnoff, since things are almost certain to have gone badly, with a dead end road leading to an old abandoned office and shed with the drunk caretaker and the night becoming dark and stormy, and the whole damned situation heading swiftly downhill.

BK if the tire that blew out is indeed the tire that was patched up a month ago do you have any recourse? Unless you happened to run over another nail it seems like the patched job should not just blow out while driving.

DR CHAS SMITH the Dream-O-Matic 6000 says that your dream of trying to play the same section of a song over and over indicates that you do not like change just for the sake of  change, but that you want to know the reason why.  You are more a perfectionist with yourself than with others - although you are disappointed when others do not meet your expectations.

I had a very scary blow out years ago.  I was in my 20s and had a really dangerous older car, a station wagon I had bought for $100 that probably shouldn't have been on the road.  My parents had driven up from SLC and I had met them on the Oregon Coast.  I was driving back very late in order to be home to go to work the next day and was probably going around 90 mph (hey, I was young) when my rear tire blew.  I almost lost control of the car but managed to bring it over to the side of the road.   I knew I had a spare in the back but I found out there was no jack.  There was a farmhouse up the road and I walked up there and knocked on their door and asked them if they had a jack I could borrow.  They did, I changed my tire, and drove SLOWLY home.  :)

I'm up - I was up at six, fell back asleep, the alarm went off at seven, I fell back asleep briefly and had one of the all-time wackiest dreams ever - Ben and Ant were in LA celebrating, I was playing the piano at the Ahmanson for something I'd written that Kathleen Marshall was staging, some beauty pageant kind of thing, then suddenly someone and I were backstage as Follies was about to begin, looking out at an almost empty house, then we went out there and took a seat next to Bernadette Peters and someone (we all seemed to be friends), and then Tommy Lee Jones came in and sat in the row behind us.  Follies began, but the sound was of a guitar being played for whatever was rehearsing elsewhere - and then I was in the mountains holding a rope and there were spiders and I woke up.

TOD: Back in college, my friend Bill and I ended up in Chicago (about seven hours from school) after a night in which we didn't get quite enough to drink. It was near Christmas and as we left the city at the end of the next day, snow flakes began to fall, which was a great sight from the rear-view mirror.

We planned a return trip the following Christmas with another friend in tow, and it, too, was quite memorable.

The following year, however, Bill, two women he was sleeping with and I ended up in the Smokey Mountains around Gatlinburg. When we went down one hill, the brakes gave out on the car. I was not amused, but we were  able to pull to a stop at a garage. That was back in the days before every college student had two or three credit cards, and we were able to scrounge together enough money among the four of us to pay for the brake work. We didn't have enough money to get any food on the way back, however ...

Since then, I have loved taking spontaneous trips here and there in Texas. It's so huge, you can drive wherever and never visit the same place twice.

If you copy a URL, especially a long one, go into reply and paste it in, as it appears below

http://archive.org/search.php?query=subject%3A%22Copyright+Records-+Musical+Compositions+including%3A+List+of+Copyright+Renewals+List+of+Notices+of+User+with+Annual+Index%22

Then highlight it and click on the globe. It will add these two things, one at the beginning and one at the end of the URL

Beginning  and End  (http://and End)

Replace the second bracket in the first URL  with an = (equal) sign so it looks like this [url=http://archive etc.

Add a bracket to the second URL  (http://with an = (equal) sign so it looks like this [url=.

Add a bracket to the second URL) so it looks like this ]

Once you have done this you can put the cursor between the ] and type whatever you want to describe the link for example ]Library of Congress

You can then, if you like, highlight your description and click B to bold the description and then you can change the color, if you like, by highlighting it again and clicking on Change Color. Choose the color you prefer and it adds the code to the link

]Library of Congress

The above is an example so you see how it will look in the reply box. IT WON'T LOOK LIKE THIS (IF YOU'VE DONE IT CORRECTLY) ONCE YOU CLICK POST. IT WILL LOOK LIKE THIS

Larry's Library of Congress Link (http://archive.org/search.php?query=subject%3A%22Copyright+Records-+Musical+Compositions+including%3A+List+of+Copyright+Renewals+List+of+Notices+of+User+with+Annual+Index%22)

Although, to do all the work I described you do have to be in the Reply mode.

Does anyone have the CD of Carmelina - I don't know the score at all - that and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue - looking for a few interesting songs from those shows and need suggestions.  I'd have to assume there's something decent in Carmelina since it's Burton Lane.

"One More Walk Around the Garden" is fantastic.

There is no official recording of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue since it was a huge flop. There are recordings of songs from the show and bootlegs are floating about. It was released with changes (IIRC) as White House Cantata and it's available on Amazon, and probably other places as well.

I've got Carmelina, but not with me. And I have the recording of White House Cantata, which is the score of 1600.

Best song is "One More Walk Around the Garden" from "Carmelina." Also, love the young girl's "All That He'd Want Me to Be" from that score.

"President Jefferson Sunday Luncheon March" from "1600" is fun, as is "Duet for One." "Take Care of This House" is moving.

Patricia Routledge, whose comment about her costar was "That man was never sober!," stopped the show completely with the classic "Duet For One," but I don't think it comes off well on recording since you really need to see her play two characters at the same time. Judy Kaye used to perform it, and she recorded it for McGlinn, who was obsessed with the show, on his "Broadway Showstoppers" recording.

BK, I may have a vocal score for "White House Cantata." I checked and I do.

In reference to yesterday's haul, I watched THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN last night.  Recognized a few obvious scenes, but I don't think I'd seen this one in decades.  Loved every minute of it.  I'll have to watch the two Colossal films together and in order sometime soon.

(And how bizarre, now -- ordering, receiving and loading a VHS tape!  Would it work??  How would my player handle it??  Well, it handled it beautifully, and the film looked great throughout -- on 50" plasma, yet.  Better, in fact, than transfers of other Gordon finds on DVD, such as TORMENTED and PICTURE MOMMY DEAD, which I only briefly sampled, to find they are very obviously from VHS sources.)

After a half and hour of this, Jed declared that they were going to find out for themselves just how wild Hollywood was.....and Jethro said: "Hot dog!  Are we goin' to a Hollywood party?"  And Jed replied: "Nope, we're heading for that mill in Springfield!"

TOD

It sounds like a wonderful trip.  Keith introduced me to Howard Johnson's.  I like their peppermint stick ice cream.

Finally a reason to be glad I can't hear tunes in my head.  Mostly I feel cheated.

That's funny. I dreamt about a spider last night but can't remember what it was doing. I think spiders are common in dreams. I'm sure JRand61 can say why, for a nominal sum.

Really weird.  Until I read these posts I had forgotten last night I had two spiders in my dream.  They were crawling on me and I wanted them off of me fast but didn't want to harm them.  I did eventually, gently remove them.

Hi all!  Sorry I didn't post last night.  I had a few phone calls about it being my first day back at work.  Needless to say, I made it though.  Can't say I was happy to be there.

Is it bad to be back at your job for 2nd day sitting at your desk thinking "I don't want to be here anymore?".   Sigh.

I'm so glad that you are safe, BK!  What a scare that must have been.  I've never had tire blowout (thank goodness).  I did have a car stall on a RR Track once.  No train!

Vibes to DR Ginny's friend Amy!  Prayers for a very speedy recovery!

Plumbing vibes to DR Elmore!

Congrats to DR Vixmom's Vixter on her job!

And lastly--oh DR Ben and Dear HUSBAND Ant--I am so very, very, very, very, very happy for you!   Many congrats and much love to you both!!!!

Have to share something I saw on Facebook.  It was an add for our lotto--it reads:  Tallahassee Man Wins Gas for a YEAR!  I had two thoughts when I read that.  A.  I'm glad I don't live in Tallahassee.   B.  I wonder if they also supplied him with a years supply of Tums!

Well, a shed is better than nothing.

DR Danise did you have the option for a smaller space with smaller machines?
True about the shed but only going to be an 8 X 8.

Finally a reason to be glad I can't hear tunes in my head.  Mostly I feel cheated.
I get stuck with (and I'm not sure if this is the title) a Michael Crawford song--"All is well".  That phrase repeats and repeats.  I guess I'm just glad I woke up.

Title: Re: BLOW OUT
Post by: Jane on June 05, 2012, 05:55:34 PM
A good number of years ago I began losing the hearing in my left ear.  When I had my hearing checked the doctor also ordered a cat scan as loss in only one ear can be an indication of a tumor.  Knowing 3 people at the time, including my sister, I was grateful for the scan and that it was normal.

Eight months ago my hearing had gotten so bad I went to the audiologist (actually my third time there over the years tracking my hearing) and was told to return in two years & that even then I might not be able to tolerate hearing aids due to my sensitivity to loud noises.

For eight months, really more than that, I've been driving Keith & Craig crazy with my inability to hear.  Before we left for Chicago I had my ears rechecked to make sure nothing was wrong and that the constant sensation of being plugged could not be corrected.  I also had my hearing rechecked.

As of today I am wearing hearing aids and trying not to feel old.  Really, I'm too young for this.  Most of all I hope I can adapt to them and hear properly.

I have to slowly up the sound levels.  It is amazing all the sounds that are annoying because I can hear them.  Crinkling paper sounds very loud as does scratching my ears.  Craig was pouring juice and I realized I hadn't been able to really hear this in a long while.

Everyone who wears glasses can relate the feeling of suddenly seeing to suddenly hearing.  That little boy yesterday truly captured my expression.

I also have a soft level to turn sounds down if I want a break from them.

Well, it's pretty heavily edited, so I'd assume it's from last night.  All I've been able to see of the Jubilee festivities is clips on CNN in the workout room at the Y, so I'm watching this.  Katie Couric looks like she's started down the plastic surgery road.

Back - replaced the tire, and one other in the rear - tires have gotten pricey, haven't they.  Since it took an hour I went to Du-Par's and had two poached eggs on toast.

That reminds me, BK, I saw something on the innerweb yesterday which showed an old 1920s or 30s photo of a strange diner shaped like an airplane which was where Dupar's on Ventura now is.

There used to be--maybe still is--a chain of restaurants in Southern California called the 49TH AIR SQUADRON or something like that, and they had a aeronautical motif. But I doubt that they went back to the 1920s or '30s.

94th Aero Squadron.  World War I aeronautical motif.  There was (is?) one at Van Nuys Airport, and at a few other spots around the country.  I'm under the impression some of them are still around, but I need to look it up.  Fun place to relax and eat and drink and be around planes.  If you're into that sort of thing.  I am, having gotten my private pilot license at VNY in the late 70s.  (Not my late 70s, the twentieth century's late 70s.)

Darn. I think they got deleted some time ago.

I took my then teenage daughter to Las Vegas to see Forever Plaid several years ago. We had always been fascinated by the tackiness of casino carpets. Well, we had the whole day to kill before showtime. So to keep busy, we decided to see how many different casino carpets we could photograph in a day. Kept us busy.

I am delighted to say that a Google search brings up a good number of 94th Aero Squadron locations, including Van Nuys:

They all seem to have their own web page.

After we wore out casino carpets, we moved on to ceilings, light fixtures, and I believe doorknobs.

Are they similar to traditional movie theater lobby carpets, that kind of thing?

Does anyone have the CD of Carmelina - I don't know the score at all - that and 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue - looking for a few interesting songs from those shows and need suggestions.  I'd have to assume there's something decent in Carmelina since it's Burton Lane.

1600 Pennsylvannia Ave:
I have the concert version (White house Cantana) and I have a recording of the original Broadway cast Ken Howard and Patricia Routledge. Not sure at what point the recording was made, but I think it was before the official opening.

Carmelina really has only three good songs in the score. One More Walk Around the Garden (Great male Trio), Why Him? (Carmelina) and Time For A Love Song (Male lead)

I have a version of Judy Kaye doing Duet For One from 1600 Pennsylvannia Ave and a few other cover versions of various songs from the show

I thought you said "A very dangerous car, a stolen wagon"

And don't forget the transit of Venus across the sun at about 6 p.m. EDST.

Did you notice the sun spots?

I didn't either, but I can unfortunately count on doing so a couple of times a year.

G'night

Tonight two professors from Morningside College had telescopes set out so we could view the Venus transit.  It was fun.  Not like the glorious NASA photos, but it was fun.  They even gave us a free constellation chart and had make it yourself sundials for the kids

What kept going through my head was "God save Venus, I just saw the Queen....no wait God Save the Queen, I just saw Venus"  I have no idea why it was going through my head, but it wasn't spiders or damselflies eating other flies :)
