Title: THE DINNER PARTY
Post by: bk on June 21, 2012, 12:04:01 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of a dinner party, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they were at a dinner party, too, and were happy they were served chicken rather than beef.

Good morning, all! Last night I dreamed about Goodspeed. chorus girls leaving the business from frustration or romantic problems and the dread Victria Clark. Lordy!

Today, I am staying close to home, although I will cart this score to Kinko;s and have the 10 copies run off. DR George, I scrwed up my post last night with my poor typing. It's a score of 220 pages. Ten copies printed on both sides (110 pages when finished) would cost me $220 at Staples, which is $0.10/page and seems a bit much to  me. I think Kinko's estimate of $95 is way off as well and the actual price form them is smewhere in the middle. I'll report back.

When I finish the trip to Kinko's, I will throw the laundry into the washers and work on the EILEEN notes. Time's getting short for my deadline.

TOD:

I love to throw parties, but I haven't in the past few years because of finances and school work. But  this Easter I held my usual get-together, which is generally for about eight friends who are without a place to go. I usually try to cook something I've never made before, such as prime rib. This year, the invite list grew to more than 15 and it didn't matter. Two friends decided to take over the main course, which freed me to do a deep cleaning. Everyone had their full, and about eight of us sat around outside at the ending of the evening with drinks and watched the fireflies dance about. I  think BK had it right. It's more about having a good balance of people than anything else.

Cillaliz: I had deep-fried butter at a concert in Louisville a couple of years back. It was a dessert. Think of it as ravioli with cinnamon-sugar lightly dusted on top. The butter complemented the dough and was quite nice -- if you like butter.

I've ordered butter soup, so you can imagine my thoughts on the subject.  :)

Hi all.  I just had the AC guys come and look at my unit.  It's cracked and that why the pan keeps filling up.  They have to order a part but they said it is an easy fix.  I'll take their word for that.  What do I know about central heat/air units?

I'm thrilled that the darn thing is going to be fixed and i won't have to climb up in the attic every 2 weeks to drain the pan.

Hope your install goes smooth DR Ginny.  I confess that now that I'm used to having it, I can't imagine going without the ac/heat.  Can't believe I lived in this house for over 30 years without either.

We lived in Fort Lauderdale throughout the 1960s ... without air conditioning.  To this day, I have no idea how that was possible.  It's unimaginable to me now.  But people told us we'd adapt (like, after a year or so!), and adapt we did.  And that was way more common then than you'd think.  I remember "heat waves" in which I'd be particularly uncomfortable, but I think that for the most part it was something we didn't think much about.

My parents finally put a window unit into their bedroom because my mom had a night job at the hospital that she loved, so in order to get decent sleep during the day there was no choice but to have some a/c.  And boy, did that room feel like heaven.

TOD

A good dinner party is an ideal way to spend time with ideal people.  And it doesn't have to be something ridiculously formal.  There have definitely been times that friends and I have experienced this, if not actually calling it a "dinner party", and those times are unforgettable.  They're also all too infrequent.  (Which needn't and shouldn't be the case.  Note to self.)  And it needn't or shouldn't be just people you already hang out with.  Bringing a couple of new people into the mix might be a happy accident, or an art, but when it happens right, that's what makes this kind of thing so perfect.

P.S. -- I highly recommend the East Coast as a perfect locale for MR BK reviving his Beef Stroganoff skills.

I am back from Kinko's, and the $95 extimate was about a third of what they told me today: $292. Now, that's approximately 2250 copies at $0.13/page, which is outrageous and I will call kinko main offices and complain. If it had been $0.15 for each double page, as I was led to believe last night when I questioned the $95.00, that would have come to around $169.00 which seems fairer, given the number of copies. The toner is aeound $60.00, which they get at a lower rate, I'm sur, and $20.00 for the three reams of paperfor the entire job. Something is wrong with this greedy picture.

Anyway, I may simply go with Staples and finish the damned thing.

It's too damned hot to be so pissed off, but the check from the Man from Philadelphia hasn'ty arrived and I don't know how the hell he expcts me to pay fpr any work without the fuckin money.

Our new AC is installed and doing a great job.  The new unit is much bigger than the old one, but much quieter.  That's good, because it sits right outside our bedroom window.  Scott and Rob have left for now to go take care of others' AC, ice machine, and commercial freezer problems.  They'll be back next week to finish up the heating part of the job and clean up the mess they've made in the basement.

I find THIS (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/167314-Classic-Albums-of-Working-Desert-Song-and-Call-Me-Madam-Get-Digital-Era-Release) rather interesting.  Well, mostly the bit about the Working cast album.
I saw that. I've got the "Working" and "Madam," but I'd like to get "The Desert Song." I wish they would release the studio album of "Rose-Marie" with Julie Andrews and Giorgio Tozzi.

Yeah, but I was wishing somebody else would release it in this country. Sepia is a British label, and their versions of "Hazel Flagg" and "Make a Wish" were not great in terms of sound. There's something flat about both that is different from how vibrant they sound on vinyl. Perhaps if BK remastered them ... (Columbia Masterworks, or whatever the label is, has redone "Make a Wish" and the sound is supposed to be great, but I haven't bought it yet.)

In the Wow! Kimmel (Bobby, it turns out).  I highly recommend this to anyone who likes/liked The Mamas & The Papas or Free Design.

BK, you should get it just for the liner notes--you will love the details about late sixties L.A.'s recording scene.  Several synchronicities for you, too, including Dinah Shore and Stu Phillips.

Interestingly, I was so fascinated by this album I managed to track down Perry Botkin, Jr, who contributes absolutely insanely Baroque orchestrations.  He had absolutely no memory of the dates--it was just another job for him.  The liner notes, written by one of the surviving members, talk about the album being partially written at Botkin's Laurel Canyon A-frame.  Funny.

I'll ask for some class finding vibes for Craig.  He has four co-requisite classes he needs to take.  Of course he prefers to get as many out of the way before beginning the program at Johns Hopkins in September.  The problem is he can't find all the classes he needs and three of them have pre-requisites.

He got one of the pre-requisites waived leaving only three left.  The class that had the pre waived is not offered on line which means he will have to go to Maryland next month to take it.  Which means we will have to cut our L.A. trip short to return in time to watch Yogi & Kitty for a week and a half.

He is still working on the other three classes.  Finding on line classes would be the best option.  There is one possibility for a class beginning on Monday, with in state fees too.

I just spent a satisfying hour and a half watching WHEN A STRANGER CALLS, which has to be one of the more unnerving movies ever made.  My nerves were thoroughly unned.

What a great rediscovery.  For me it's a companion rediscovery to Walter Hill's THE DRIVER, with which I recently reacquainted myself, as they connect in certain great, and gritty, downtown L.A. locations.  Did I say gritty?  The whole film is gritty.  The first 20 minutes, and the end, are classic.  But I was happily along for the ride throughout.  Even got a couple of surprises, because (cue the cliche department):  they don't make 'em like this anymore!  The modern day ripoffs are predictable in ways that sometimes the originals aren't.  I love 1970s thrillers, and what an incredible example to bring a decade of them to an end.

Just back from PROMETHEUS in IMAX 3D.  Friend is a manager at the local plex where they just converted one screen to IMAX, so I saw it for free in a dress rehearsal for employees, family, and friends.  I guess no one has many family or friends because there were only eight people there.

Very enjoyable.  At this point I'm not even trying to figure out how good the film is or isn't.  The 3D was wonderful, and all eight of us had a rollicking good time.

Higher Education Vibes for DS Craig~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I didn't watch the last episode of "Fringe," because I wanted to watch tonight's "Kathy."  Her special guest is the one and only (and close personal friend of DR Danise) Anderson Cooper!  He's very funny with her and obviously likes her.

You mean this one?

Julie Andrews Rose-Marie Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Rose-Marie-Selections-Julie-Andrews/dp/tracks/B002S4DN7S/ref=dp_tracks_all_1#disc_1)

I bought the Broadway and London cast recordings of Flower Drum Song on Hallmark Records.  I got them from Amazon.com, but they're imports from London.  They BOTH were the mono versions and the listings didn't specify that. :P They were cheap, so it wasn't too bad.

I was able to copy the London cast recording in stereo from the library.

The B'way stereo version should be readily available on CD and I don't think it's that hard to find the UK one in stereo either - I may even have an extra copy here somewhere.

Tomorrow night, some friends and I are going to see some other friends in The Lakewood Playhouse (http://www.lakewoodplayhouse.org/)'s production of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.  There's a pretty good review of it HERE (http://www.tacomaweekly.com/citylife/view/a-funny-thing-indeed-at-lakewood-playhouse/).  I'll need to get cash to pay back the person who bought the tickets.

In 1992, 20 years ago last month actually, I played Hero in a local production and it turns out that the guy who played Pseudolus 20 years ago is playing Erronious in Lakewood's production!  I don't think that I've seen him since then.  I wonder if he remembers me.
