Well, you've read the notes, the notes were falling asleep, and now it is time for you to post until the sleeping cows come home.

First Post!  Yay!

I have bad news.  I woke up because I was HOT.  Had to get the ladder and go into the attic.  You guessed it.  The pan was full of water.  What's scary is that only took 2 days instead of 2 weeks!  I shall have to call the company on Monday.

Saturday is another work day.  Oh well.

Turned off the Opening ceremonies after about 20 minutes - well ten minutes of ceremony and ten minutes of commercials.

On another subject, shouldn't a person stop running for president until he has been nominated at the convention?  I am hoping for a big fight there and a dark horse - because no matter what they say - once that curtain is closed, I can't imagine a MAJORITY of people voting for a Mormon for POTUS.  :o

Good morning, all! I slept far too late, even though the alarm went off at 6:00am/ Tw hours later, after debating for 15 minutes or so on what the hell I was doing today, I got out of bed.

I was going to cart more books to the office, but I am frankly so angry at the situation and the mess there - not to mention how sore I am from dragging, lifting, dropping, unpacking around 40 cartons - that I need a day away from the mess.  I need at the moment a crew of younger men around half my age to lift the cartons out of the one room for me because I cannnot. My colleague Curtis, who's  known this month was going to be horrible for several months, decided to instead take on work to remove himself from Manhattan until Sept 20 or so, so I've got sound equipment, a prnter, a computer wrapped and waiting to be set up, chaos in every room, I still have no idea if the office has electricity after July 31, and I am tired of trying to do this alone. Our paralegal Geri, who's dealing with two friends in terminal stages of cancer, two young boys home from school, and other work, couldn't tell the movers during the move which cartons go into which room, and as a result, I've got cartons I need in one room buried under tons of cartons in another. No, I am not happy at the moment. So, I need a day off to regain some some good humor about this mess and to stop hatng nearly everyone on this project with me.

I will later go down to Home Depot and look at air condiitoners. Maybe that will cheer me up.

DR JRand61, I'm hoping the GOP candidate manages to offend enoungh people and countries to  become a loss and not get the nomination he and Queen Ann are so clearly certain of. Much as I dislike the politics of the Mormon (and Catholic) Church, I dislike Romney because he's a Moron. And I don't trust him.  Why are so many politicians more interested in what they can get out of the job rather than what they can put into it?

What is he hiding in those tax returns?

Very strange. After getting a phone call from Dell recently saying my warranty had expired and offering a further year, which I turned down, I received a phone call today from someone claiming to be from Microsoft (he was obviously calliing from India - as was the Dell call). He said they had been getting reports of a problem with my computer and that it could be affecting my security. He suggested making some changes to the computer which he would guide me with over the phone. I said "no thanks" and terminated the call. Seemed very suspicious to me. And how would Microsoft have my phone number - I've never given it to them?

Actress and author Kirstie Alley
Model and actress Pamela Anderson
Race car champ Helio Castroneves
'NSync singer Joey Fatone
Gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson
98 Degrees singer Drew Lachey
Hunky Sex and the City actor Gilles Marini
Soap star Kelly Monaco
Speed skater Apolo Ohno
Reality star, political daughter Bristol Palin
Bachelor star Melissa Rycroft
NFL star Emmitt Smith

Plus, the Viewer's Choice All-Star choices -- vying for the final, 13th slot -- are:
Cheetah Girls singer/actress Sabrina Bryan
Disney star Kyle Massey
Celeb stylist and TV star Carson Kressley

This was only announced yesterday afternoon.  Not really such a great cast, especially for the women.

Some I would not consider allstars. And too many winners.

The most interesting part will be to see who each is paired with. I am curious if most will be paired with their original partners. I would have either done everybody with their original partners. Or nobody. Not fair otherwise.

Not looking forward to Pamela Anderson or Bristol Palin at all. They were both terrible dancers.

I really hope that Sabrina is the vote-in (even though i really like Kyle). She was a fantastic dancer and got voted out way too early.

I also really hope that my favorite pro Derek does not end up with Pamela or Bristol.

I had an Elmore-like dream last night in which I was directing Jim Dale and Andrea Martin in a production of "Candide" and the problem was the show wasn't funny, not the performers.

TOD: About 15 years ago, when I was living in Florida, I found myself in charge of the newspaper office that I working in for about 15 days straight. We covered -- and dealt with -- freak floods, local politics, murders, all the great things that newspaper life is all about. On the last day, we got word that a pod of whales was threatening to beach themselves because one of the mothers had a sick calf. So, I got a photographer up in an airplane to get images of the pod, and I arranged for a reporter to get on a boat to go interview the rescuers that were trying to head them off. I also talked the rest of us into getting on the boat. Off we went. Every energizing trip, and the rescue attempt was successful, even though the calf did not survive. We had everything written, edited and in before deadline, and it was good work. I still have a photo hanging in my house of the pod. Oh, yeah, and the competition didn't have the story, which is always a good feeling on top of everything else.

You won't believe it - someone DID open a paypal dispute saying they haven't received Follies yet.  I took the gloves off and if the e-mail I wrote goes through (he's on AOL and obviously a complete idiot) he will understand just how quickly he'd best shut it down.  He's in Palm Springs and probably will get his CD today, but I have his tracking info (waiting for the helper to get it) and I will provide it to paypal and they will shut him down.

Just watched a little of the opening ceremonies in 3-D.  It's quite impressive, even given that in certain shots the resulting resolution on TV is more akin to standard def than high def.  But well worth enjoying for a while.  I didn't get up at 5 a.m. to see the beginning, so I'm hoping this channel will repeat again later on so I can see the Danny Boyle extravaganza in 3-D.

I've been to Best Buy; the only portable air conditioner brand they're carrying is Frigidaire. the price is $379, which is good, but I had a lot of questions - like if I plug it into a regular power strip will I blow every fuse in the apartment - but I couldn't get any clerk to give me the time of day. I finally left, and on the way out, I stopped a clerk and told him they had employed a lot of asses and left.

So, I am still not sure of how to proceed. I sent an email to my landlord this morning, telling him I was still awaiting his return phone call and that we should discuss a new stove and refrigerator since I'm still using the ones that were here when I moved in 33 years ago.

The air is so humid it's like walking through a fog. Ugh.

The guy responded with a one-sentence reply that was snippy and concluded with sorry for the inconvenience - not addressing one single point in my e-mail about having the courtesy to contact us first (we're easy to contact - phone numbers, e-mail - it's all on the site and easy to find) or doing a complaint.  Then he wrote back and said he's not an expert on paypal, etc. and that he was on the phone with them to shut it down.  I responded and reiterated all the points of my first e-mail, told him I'm happy to get his tracking number to him, and to let me know when the dispute was dismissed, which it STILL isn't.

Last night's rehearsal dinner was amazing. Funny, moving and joyous! A swath of rain just moved over the area, and, hopefully, it will stay clear until this afternoon. The actual ceremony is short, and that's the only part of the nuptial festivities that were rehearsed "en plain air". Everything else can take place under the big tent that's been set up on the property.

He's "trying" to get hold of Paypal.  Meanwhile, I've already provided paypal with the tracking information, and I also sent the guy the tracking information, which shows his package arrived at the Palm Springs post office at eight this morning.  So, I don't know if that means he'll have it today or Monday but it will be one of those two days.  And it shows that it was shipped on Thursday.  He's trying to call paypal - I told him to just go on their site and shut it down.

Hi all!  There is indeed  FOLLIES sighting right here in beautiful uptown Seffner, FL!   I went out and ran a few errands, came home, opened my mailbox and there it sat!  I quickly brought it into the home environment and will enjoy it shortly after I get everything purchased put away.

The dogs made out like bandits again.  They got everything from food to treats, a new ball (I bought that because it was the kind that Toby likes and the last time I needed to replace it I had to go to 4 different Walmarts to find it) and a large economy popper scooper.  Not the most glamorous purchase but one of lives necessaries.  All thirty dollars of it.

I also got my hairs cut.  Then I had to come home because one of the things I hate is all the little hairs that are on your neck when they get done.  It didn't take long with the heat to make me start to sweat and those hairs were tickling.  Couldn't wait to get home and take a quick shower.

Well, I am looking forward to comments.  Someone has already complained about one page of the booklet - the song list (which is on the inlay card) - we simply used the insert of the song list that came with the LP, which we thought was fun.  It's a little hard to read but isn't really there other than for fun and, of course, it doesn't have One More Kiss because that wasn't on the LP.  Otherwise he thought it was great.  There's one post on the Cast Recordings Facebook page - all the stuff I've seen so far have said it's a revelation and like you're hearing it for the first time.  This guy clearly likes it, but basically just says it sounds smoother (it does) and with the vocals clearer and the balances better.  All good.

Larry, hate to open a can of worms for you but if your landlord replaces your stove and fridge, he has the right to increase your rent to cover the cost. Even if you purchase the appliances, he can still raise your rent, in perpetuity, for new appliances. It's part of a rent-stabilized lease. I know, I've looked into the situation. You may be able to negotiate the increase with the landlord. Just be aware of his advantage in this matter.

This was only announced yesterday afternoon.  Not really such a great cast, especially for the women.

Some I would not consider allstars. And too many winners.

I also really hope that my favorite pro Derek does not end up with Pamela or Bristol.

Remeberr Jennifer, a lot of the "all-stars" may have no desire to do this competition again.

I heard yesterday on the news that Derek was leaving the show to make a movie.

Is the AC in a window?  Can the broken one be replaced with a working air conditioner & if Larry ever moves he can take the new one with him & replace it with the broken AC.   It seems to me if an appliance is movable it doesn't belong to the landlord.

TOD:

I've worn so many hats over the years, that it is difficult to pick only one thing that has given me pleasure, so I'll break my answer down into categories.

PUBLICIST:

The Best Song Oscar campaign for "A World That Never Was," written by Paul Francis Webster and Sammy Fain

The campaign is still talked about today. I have tried to track down a copy of the film with no success. The movie "Half A House" is a "lost" film. :-)

I actually like the song very much, but I don't think it had a chance against "Evergreen", but it was better  than the love song from "The Omen" (Ave Santani aka Hail Satan).

I had voted from 1st to 5th it would have been my third choice.

Thank you, BK. The sound is lovely, the voices have never sounded crisper or more present and alive. It was as if Sally were standing in the middle of the floor not going left and not going right with all those weird channel changes.

The aural fog has lifted.

Back from stuff.  I'm afraid that after two months of biting my tongue I just went ballistic with the workers who are doing heaven knows what to the house across the street, which we're now finding out may not belong to the daughter of Annette.  They've been taking up every parking space around, including all the spaces in front of my house.  They eat their lunch in the shade on my lawn by the street.  And today, having to squeeze into the only tiny place available I'd had it.  I began getting very angry and none of the fellow standing around would even answer or look in my direction.  Finally, one of the tree trimmers came to me and asked if I wanted to see the boss - yes was my answer and a minute later I had the boss.  I told him that other people actually live in this neighborhood and that we've had it day in and day out with all the spaces being taken by workers.  He promised it would not happen again, apologized, and had five of the trucks instantly moved.  Frankly, I think they're prepping the house to sell - you can see in the windows see-through things hanging where there were never things hanging and there's no furniture anywhere.

Had another complaint about the booklet - so funny - this guy was upset we didn't list the orchestra!  Say what?  No cast album in history of that era EVER listed the orchestra.  Had they and had it been part of the original LP's credits we could have and would have done it - not in the booklet, but on the site, as we do for our soundtracks.  No one listed orchestras until the 2000s and even then late into the 2000s.  What IS the matter with people.  Listen to the damn CD, enjoy it or not - The End.

But there are more wonderful comments on various boards, so that makes up for all of it.  And there is a classic on the All That Chat board where a long-time poster, in response to someone saying they got theirs, said, "What CD?  The new cast album has been out for months.  Or is it some other reissue?"  Can you imagine?

You won't believe it - someone DID open a paypal dispute saying they haven't received Follies yet.  I took the gloves off and if the e-mail I wrote goes through (he's on AOL and obviously a complete idiot) he will understand just how quickly he'd best shut it down.  He's in Palm Springs and probably will get his CD today, but I have his tracking info (waiting for the helper to get it) and I will provide it to paypal and they will shut him down.

Not only that - it's not even a complaint so that I could have responded right on paypal - he took it directly to a dispute so that I can not respond.  What an ASS.  I'm calling paypal when I get back.

The guy who complained about the musicians not being listed is - a musician who, in fact, played on the Follies revival.  I told him if he wanted to call Tunick and get me a list of the original band that I'd put it on the website, as we do for our soundtracks.  That seemed to make him happy.  elmore probably knows him.

Saturday afternoon greetings!  I went this morning to the Methodist church that Richard and I used to attend for the memorial service for a special long-time member.  She had been a good friend of my mother-in-law's and was very tolerant during the several years that I sat behind her in the Temple Choir.  Sat with my niece Jennifer, who, along with her husband, just did a big favor for me.

I may have mentioned that Richard is at the seminary in Wisconsin until after church next Sunday.  Just before I left this morning our smoke detector started chirping, indicating that the batteries need to be replaced.  I can't reach it and was not about to get up on a step ladder.  I told Jen about it and she and Scott just stopped by to disconnect it for me.  Rob and Mary Linda will be here tomorrow and he'll put it back up after I get new batteries - it takes 2 and, of course, I only have one of the right size.

Follies, second listen. "One More Kiss" is especially wonderful.

Thank heaven they found that weirdly filed eight track session master because I REALLY didn't want to use the old album mix.  One More Kiss is the only track where I actually had to "fix" something - know one has figured it out or noticed it yet.  On the original CD (wherever that awful mix came from) at the final note, you'll notice that young Heidi stops early and then they quickly fade out old Heidi, which is WRONG.  On the tapes it's obvious what happened and their attempt to fix it is ludicrous - young Heidi was very hoarse - it was the last thing recorded - and she simply stopped singing early instead of holding her note out to the end.  Old Heidi holds her note properly to the end.  With a little digital trickery, they are both holding the note now and it's finally correct. :)

Plus, the Viewer's Choice All-Star choices -- vying for the final, 13th slot -- are:
Cheetah Girls singer/actress Sabrina Bryan
Disney star Kyle Massey
Celeb stylist and TV star Carson Kressley

This was only announced yesterday afternoon.  Not really such a great cast, especially for the women.

Some I would not consider allstars. And too many winners.

I also really hope that my favorite pro Derek does not end up with Pamela or Bristol.

Remeberr Jennifer, a lot of the "all-stars" may have no desire to do this competition again.

I heard yesterday on the news that Derek was leaving the show to make a movie.

There are still plenty of good dancers who wanted to do it.

I think Derek said this was going to be his last season. Not sure if it's forever. Hope not. Him and his sister have been my favorite pros. They are such talented choreographers.

Good morning, world.

I'd like to thank the cats for letting me sleep in a little this morning.  It was sorely needed.  Now, just let this coffee begin working.

Nick got his breakfast at five, instead of six.  Then I went back to bed till eight o'clock.  Four and a half hour Opening Ceremony?  They couldn't start that at four o'clock our time, instead of seven-thirty?

I read a lot of negative comments on NBC's facebook post about the Olympics. People were super mad that they couldn't watch the Opening Ceremonies live. I know I would have been fuming too.

NBC should have shown it live from 4pm-7:30pm eastern and then replayed it at 7:30pm.

Sorry, I am probably wrong.

Nope, you're not wrong. AC is not built in for most buildings like Larry's and mine (meaning central air). You usually have a unit in the window. The stove and fridge are part of the apartment.

Why is the pan filling up so quickly?  Is it partly due to the humidity?

I'm heading out to meet a friend for lunch.  After lunch we are going to pick up some flowers to take to a woman in our book group who is recovering from a stroke.  The woman sounds great on the phone & I believe is progressing well.

~~~~~~~~~~Vibes to your book group friend!~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thank you.
She said it is scary thinking it might happen again.  There is no history of strokes in her family & her cholesterol is good.  She mentioned her blood pressure is up due to pain but didn't mention if she took meds for it.
I was surprised she didn't go to the hospital until the following morning.  Her husband knew the questions to ask if you suspect a stroke & she only failed one, the smile test.  Apparently by the morning she also couldn't raise her arms over her head.
Good evening, DRs!
Another library sale today, which I actually had forgotten to look up and get the date and time, so I wasn't there when the doors opened -- but this is probably the best one around for selection and I grabbed a few things.  Couple of examples:
"Double Life" - The Autobiography of Miklos Rozsa.
Some cast album CDs of those I have on LP but want for listening in the car, and, in some cases, just better listening.  A new one for me was BEN FRANKLIN IN PARIS.
I thought this was supposed to be another "scattered thunderstorm" day, but a line of short but violent storms moved through this afternoon, and everywhere I went after that was in continually varying amounts of rain.  I'm sure we've had enough rain to service many of the country's drought areas.
I finished watching the Brit series MONDAY MONDAY, took a dinner break and watched THE COMPANY OF WOLVES, with the wonderful Angela Lansbury, right off the SWEENEY TODD tour, as the storytelling grandmother, who's fixated on tales of men, wolves, and girls who stray from the path, before she's eaten by a wolf waiting for Rosaleen in her red cloak to show up. I hadn't seen this film for years so I'd forgotten most of it, but it's  quite an amazing dream-like trip through a pubescent girl's subconscious and a rather frightening horror film.  The young girl playing Rosaleen delivers a stunning performance, running from innocent school girl to erotic tease, and the cast is quite wonderful, even if there may be too many different European accents going on in this neck of the village.
Visually, the filmreminded me a lot of SLEEPY HOLLOW and the Rackham fairy tale illustrations.  There are no bright days in this village terrorized by wolves and werewolves; it's all dark and the woods are dangerous. And very creepy.
The surrounding story is set in the present at a wealthy country home, but Rosaleen's dream is set squarely in the 18th Century; the use of color, from the deep blacks to the scarlet cloak, is beautiful. There's one shot from a distance of Rosaleen at the top of a tree she has climbed, where bird's eggs hatch blue human babies, and there's a distant shot of a lot of black trees against a gray sky and this speck of scarlet in the middle of the screen at the top of the tree.
Along with all of the wolves, four-legged and two-legged, there are lots of slimy frogs, huge spiders, phallic symbols employing animal, insect, and serpent: Rosaleen's trip to Granny's house is a walk from adolescence  to functioning sexuality and girls who get involved with wolves just might get hurt or learn a few things Granny prefers they not know.
in othre news FOLLIES arrived today -  I have not been able to listen to it yet  but I did take a quick look through the booklet  and the case
beautifully packaged, BK, I cannot wait to hear it - unfortunately I have no sound system in the basement and even if I did between the washer, the dryer, the dehumdifier and the wet dry vac I would not have been able to hear a thing anyway
The sidewalks are still wet, so I guess we have been having some nice gentle rain. Usually the storms are very dramatic in the summer. Boom! Flash! Pouring rain! Then it quits.
If you get cable tv you can go to nbcolympics.com and sign in with your cable log in and watch all the olympics and they do have opening ceremonies.  They also have live streaming of everything
We had enough rain to get the ground wet where there are no trees.  The trees prevented the ground from getting wet. In other words, it just spit out there
Better get some sleep.  I was really sore today.  It still hurts to drive because the seat belt hits right where I'm the most sore so other than the farmers market and the grocery store, I didn't go anywhere.   I also had to get a refill on my 5 gallon water jug for my cooler and carrying that probably wasn't the smartest thing I've done lately, but I like my water, so.....   I did take a nap with the cats this afternoon for about three hours.  That was nice. Anyway, tomorrow I have to go to the office so I better get some sleep.
Back from dinner and Spelling Bee - cute show - not sure why something like it would need to be on Broadway, since it is so off-Broadway in feeling, but there is no real off-Broadway anymore, I guess.
Just watched "The Frighteners," which may be my favorite Peter Jackson movie. Yet, it may have been a little too soon since Aurora, Colo., to have watched it.
Good question.  Definitely "Off-Broadway".
I played Keyboard 2 in a local one a couple of years ago.  Fun.
People are so funny.  I was listening to the cast album of Zorba, seeing if that was something I might want to revisit like we did for Follies.  I had the original CD with the green cover and hearing it I was actually shocked at the ineptitude of the mix - horrifying.  Then I read that the Angel Broadway redo was much better so I bought that - it's actually worse.  I will now try to license it because I suspect we can work some magic - it certainly wouldn't be hard to improve it at least 1000% and I really like the score.  We shall see.
Well, I must be going.  I have to take a shower and make myself presentable for this barbecue that I've been invited to.  I expect to be back before the show tonight.  I can't imagine it lasting four hours...but you never know. :)
Have a good day, all!
The barbecue did last 4+ hours!  I met some very nice people and we ate some very good hamburgers and Polish sausages and bratwursts and played Qwirkle.  It was a lot of fun.  The show tonight...well, that's another story.  The actors were great and the audience really enjoyed the show, but there were technical problems.  The projector keeps overheating and shutting off (at least it shuts off quietly).  Anyway, we can't seem to remedy the situation yet.  I brought a fan to see if that would help and it didn't.  The show works well enough without the projections, but they help set the scenes and add to the show.
I would LOVE to get a Kimmel-ized Zorba!
Follies, second listen. "One More Kiss" is especially wonderful.
Thank heaven they found that weirdly filed eight track session master because I REALLY didn't want to use the old album mix.  One More Kiss is the only track where I actually had to "fix" something - know one has figured it out or noticed it yet.  On the original CD (wherever that awful mix came from) at the final note, you'll notice that young Heidi stops early and then they quickly fade out old Heidi, which is WRONG.  On the tapes it's obvious what happened and their attempt to fix it is ludicrous - young Heidi was very hoarse - it was the last thing recorded - and she simply stopped singing early instead of holding her note out to the end.  Old Heidi holds her note properly to the end.  With a little digital trickery, they are both holding the note now and it's finally correct. :)
It's great when you're able to fix things like that...a Miracle of Modern Technology!
I just saw that comment from "dramedy" on All That Chat.  I'm howling with laughter.  He only buys CDs of cast albums of casts he's seen.  Oh, lord.
??? What's the point of that?
It should be available in 2-3 weeks.
What happened??
Sadly it looks like DR George's theater manager friend, who vanished last weekend, is now facing additional problems.  He has apparently now been arrrested on child pornography charges.
Yup...Capital Playhouse director arrested by Olympia police on suspicion of possessing child porn (http://www.theolympian.com/2012/07/27/2188824/capital-playhouse-director-arrested.html).
