As promised, here's the new Kritzerland title.  It will be live at six - if you want it before then, it's 23.73 (including shipping) to kritzerland at adelphia dot net via paypal.

Kritzerland is pleased to present a new limited edition soundtrack CD – two great scores on one CD:

DEAR BRIGITTE

Music Composed by George Duning

and

MR. HOBBS TAKES A VACATION

Music Composed by Henry Mancini

By 1965, the family comedy film was about to hit rough times because the world was changing and we were entering a more challenging time and the movies, of course, reflected that change.   This was especially true of the quirky family comedy about quirky families doing quirky things.  In the 1960s, James Stewart, then in his mid-fifties, made two such comedies at Twentieth Century-Fox – Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation and Dear Brigitte.  Both were directed by Henry Koster and both were likeable and amiable comedies that had warmth, quirkiness, and laughs, all that you really needed back then.

Dear Brigitte, which did not make much noise at the box-office, came at the end of the cycle.  The screenplay was by Nunally Johnson and Hal Kanter, adapted from the novel, Erasmus with Freckles by John Haase.  The supporting cast could not be more wonderful, with the lovely Glynis Johns, the young Billy Mumy, John Williams, Ed Wynn, cute couple Cindy Carol and Fabian, Jack Kruschen, Alice Pearce and Jessie White.  Dear Brigitte has a score that is as delightful as the movie it accompanies, aiding immeasurably in making the film so entertaining.

Duning’s music was always tuneful, always served the films beautifully, and his comedy scores especially were models of what great comedy scores should be and Dear Brigitte is one of his most charming.   Right from the main title, with xylophone and banjo leading the way to a classic Duning theme (a three-note motif – many composers like to do this – it’s literally the syllables of the title set to music), you know you’re in good hands.  The score is fun, frothy, and classic Duning.

Three years earlier, the Stewart family comedy was Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation, which also had a stellar cast, including beautiful Maureen O’Hara, John Saxon, John McGiver, Marie Wilson, Reginald Gardner, and Lauri Peters (fresh from Broadway’s The Sound of Music), and Fabian, along with Michael Burns as Stewart’s young son (and an uncredited appearance by someone named Herb Alpert, playing a trumpet player).  The film was a huge hit and is as delightful today as it was then.  Once again, it’s a perfect match between film and composer, in this case, Henry Mancini.

In 1962, Mancini would write four great scores in a row for four different studios – Experiment in Terror, Hatari, Days of Wine and Roses, and Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation.  Each score is completely different and each brilliant in its own way.  Mr. Hobbs is the lightest of them – a wonderful compendium of classic Mancini music, from the delightful main theme (in its many guises), to Mancini’s usual great source music tracks, to his deft way with underscoring both comedy and scenes of emotion.   As with most Mancini scores of this vintage, there is a surprising amount of dramatic scoring that works beautifully in the film.

Dear Brigitte is making its debut on CD.  The tapes were mostly in good shape, but a handful of tracks were beyond repair, so badly damaged that there was no way to include them.  Thankfully, thematically all that material is covered in other tracks.  We’ve done our best to minimize the wow and flutter present on a couple of tracks, but most of it sounds pretty great in stereo.  Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation was previously released by Intrada – it sold out and hasn’t been available for years now.  The Intrada presentation put all the tracks in strict film order, but because there were quite a few source music tracks in a row, we felt that interrupted the actual score too much, so we’ve switched it up a bit and moved some of the source music cues to the bonus track section. Again, there is a bit of wow and flutter here and there, but we’ve remastered the sound, cleaned up some little sound problems from the previous release, and put a few of the really short tracks together, which, for us, makes for a more seamless listening experience.  Any way you listen to it, Dear Brigitte and Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation are smilers – music that just makes you smile, makes you happy, music filled with memorable melodies in a delightful variety of guises and settings, by two great film composers – Henry Mancini and George Duning.

Dear Brigitte/Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.

CD will ship the first week of September  – however, never fear, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Good morning, all!  I slept poorly, because, even with the temperature drop, it's too hot in this damned apartment. I had to be up eatly to insure that I get to my 9:00 appointment on time. I have another round with Social Security that I thought had been resolved a month ago.  I was wrong.

After that, I will head to Toyland to lug around a few more cartons; yesterday, I shelved several hundred unpacked vocal scores. I'll continue opening cartons today and get a few more books onto the shelves. <y goal is to unpack all of the books and printed music so there's at least room to move about. The manuscript and photocopies, which will go ontp shelves and into filing cabinets, can wait for the nonce.

More coffee!

I'm up, even earlier than six.  Announcing in twenty-eight minutes.  Another soundtrack label from overseas has now decided to announce in exactly the same way I do - so a day that should have been all mine has now been compromised.  This guy has never released on a Monday morning in his history - always on Thursday or Friday.  So annoying.

I've come later than most to silent films, but am loving them and accumulating some now, and shall make up for my past neglect in the coming years.  My favorites derive from the relative few I know, so please ask again later.

NOSFERATU
PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI
M
METROPOLIS
WINGS

Based on cursory looks at THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE and some Chaplin on Criterion, I have little doubt that they will be joining the above.

DR ChasSmith, for some reason I am unable to get REFORM SCHOOL GIRL to copy properly. I have tried several times and each time the copied disc begins the movie already in progress. The original DVDr works just fine, so there is something screwy in the software or something.

I will look for something else amusing to send your way, instead. Of course if you are wanting to still see REFORM SCHOOL GIRL it is available on a region 2 DVD, I think.

My sister is getting together her inventory lists and everything....the office was ransacked and one jewelry case emptied.....several thousand dollars worth of sterling silver rings & pendants & gemstone rings & pendants.

I have a feeling that some of our inventory will be on sale just NEXT DOOR where a competitor is holding a NEW AGE FESTIVAL in a couple of weeks...some if not all.....

I hope not too much.   Is money covered by insurance?  It seems it might be difficult to prove how much you had.

Yes, it is, DR JANE.  We have a cash report everyday that we use to keep our books with - so we have a sales total, divided into cash sales & credit sales.

The majority of our sales are by credit card, but we do have a big cash business as well.

Busy printing orders, answering the telephonic device, I had a sandwich and onion rings, picked up a package that contained an early draft of Psycho, the script to the Psycho trailer, and a letter from the censorship board about what was and wasn't acceptable in the script - let's just say this: Despite the letter and its contents, Hitch and company got away with murder. :)

My warmest memories, sadly, are of my Aunt Jenny coming over to wash all my accumulated laundry and to iron my shirts and trousers so I could go back to school.

Her death tears my heart out that I now can never tell her how much I appreciated and loved her for doing that.

This is so very sweet, touching & sad.  I'm sure your aunt knew how much you appreciated her.  She obviously loved you very much.
I know you can be hard on your mom, Elmore (I can be the same about mine at times). But perhaps your aunt knew her in ways that you couldn't, which is why she helped you as she could. Again, my condolences.

Mikey, there's probably a "Good Taste" mode you need to turn off before you can proceed.
Now that comment made my afternoon.

Thank you.  I was just listening to Keith go on & on about how colors have returned to his vision.  He is very excited :)  This has been going on for awhile but he had to wait for it to reach a certain level, to where he was on the verge of not driving anymore, before it could be fixed.  He will need his left eye done down the road.  It won't be so bad coping with the vision in his right eye being so good.

Of course we know why... $$$

I just thought it was nice gesture to families with young children - and to parents who can't afford to wait in line for eight to sixteen hours for tickets.

But I guess if they're trying to garner intere$t for a Broadway transfer, well...

DR JohnG, much as I know my feelngs about my mother are complicated, she was an insane, narcissistic  conditional-love-only, manipulative bitch who nearly destroyed her youngest son's life by her passive-aggressve, but mainly remote, approach to rearing him, preferring shopping and soap operas to dealing with his school problems and enforcing discipline as he matured.

I believe her decisions to make those weekend trips on my last weekends home from college were deliberate attempts to avoid housework; when the house became too filthy, she'd become ill, go to bed, and let her sisters come in, get my brothers and me to school, feed us, and clean the house. Once it looked good, she was well, out of bed, and off to shop. Her sisters and sisters-in-law had no illusions about her problems. Families "overlooked" those things.

I don't make this up. She was a mess: unhappy, dreaming of a romantic happy ending that she had never worked for; the two pieces of literature that best describe her are Sally in FOLLIES and the leading lady in the tragic song "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan." I don't romanticize her madness and failures as a mother, and some days I find her eccentricities a source of humor. Some days I miss her and mourn whatever shaped her behavior. Those days I miss her, but there are more days when I want to dig her up just to kick her ass.

Apparently a lot of folks got their Follies CDs today - what always amuses me is when they get them after wanting them so badly, they let it sit, much like our own elmore.  I could never do that if I was salivating for something.  The biggest complainer on the Cast Recordings Facebook page got his today and hasn't listened yet.

Why are you dragging me into this? You know I love you, and you're getting more than enough love from perfect strangers this week.

Craig had a phone interview for a job as a para-educator (teacher's aid) today and was offered the position.  His cleared it through his adviser at Johns Hopkins & will be accepting it tomorrow.  The position includes full benefits.  He will attend classes in the evenings.

I was so busy today that I didn't hear one spoiler about the Olympics and I'm really enjoying them tonight.  Maybe I better get off the computer so the no spoilers doesn't change

Thanks DR's George & Ginny.

When asked where he wanted to work he named several areas and stated this location as where he didn't want to work.  ::)

On the upside it is a very good school.  He liked the principal who interviewed him and their special education program is what he is interested in.

Had he known sooner he could have come home 3 days sooner & not bothered looking for a place to live.  Tomorrow, after confirming his job, he will call the building he used to live in and take something there.  He used to pass the school all the time when he lived there.

This won't be convenient to his classes but close to his apartment giving him time to walk Yogi before & after work.

You know the Proctor & Gamble ad campaign "Proud Sponsor of Moms"?  P & G was also a sponsor of the World Choir Games in Cincinnati earlier this month and they honored the choir moms, too.  Here is Middletown's mayor volunteering at the desk where the moms went to pick up their thank-you tote bag:

Rehearsal was very rough - this is one instance where everyone had their music the first week of the month - I don't think it makes any difference whether they get it two weeks before the show - most of the rough was our MD who hadn't really done his homework - he will before Thursday - he had a very busy week.

Also, astonishingly, I got an e-mail from someone raving about Follies and telling me not to pay attention to the people on the castrec group - apparently someone or some people have been bitching about something.  What is WRONG with these people?  If someone can fill me in perhaps I'll have some fun with it.

Hello, everyone.

Larry, I'm so sorry to hear about your Aunt Jenny. She was your mother's brother's wife? When I was growing up there was a strong resistance to step in when parents dropped the ball. It was good of her to do so.

Oh My God.

That's all I can say, having just listened to FOLLIES.

It's all new to me, so I have no points of reference.  And I didn't sample the LP first.  I'll do that later.  Probably won't get far with it, but it'll be fun.  I just dove right in.  The CD just sounds truly wonderful.

And what a score.  This book of the songs that I'd never opened up just became worth its weight in gold, though I'm sure I'll eventually want the actual score.

DR John G, I also liked THE BOOK THIEF very much. I think you'll enjoy reading it, too. The book design is interesting, and makes it a visual experience, as well.

I know it's billed as young adult, but I found it pretty dark for YA.

Good Evening!

I'm back from The Delacorte...

I really liked this production of Into the Woods. It's definitely not your mother or father's Into the Woods, and that's OK. -Although, I did get a kick out of one particular audience member who bitched and moaned as he filed out of the theatre, "The English have to mess up everything. They just can't leave well enough alone. It's because of all the Shakespeare they do. I'm sure Stephen Sondheim hates this production and will want to shut it down." -WHAT?!?!? In any case...

The weather cooperated wonderfully, and it was great to see such an amazingly talented cast on that stage. I may even try to see it again during the final week of its run.

After we left Central Park, Yosh and I went to Ditch Plains where (one of our) favorite bartenders happened to be on duty tonight. We didn't drink, but we did eat: Jalapeño-Cheddar Tater Tots, Deviled Eggs with Fried Oysters and their new Seared Scallops entree (with Charred Corn Puree, Cherry Tomatoes, Zucchini and Basil). All quite delicious. burp

DR ChasSmith - Thankfully, the piano/vocal score is back in print. There was a year or two when it wasn't, and the prices for used copies were sky-high.
