Title: JULY WE HARDLY KNEW YE - OR, THE POMPADOUR
Post by: bk on July 31, 2012, 12:36:20 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes hardly knew ye and had a pompadour, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently making a silk purse out of a cow's ear.  Or is it a sow's ear?  Or is it a pompadour?

Good morning, all! This morning, I have a visit from an agent from Health Plan of New York to check out my Medicare concerns; i have none, so this will be a short meeting. Then, I guess I will head down to Toyland for another round of toting, carting, and unpacking. I also have to deal with a situation involving a friend I do not look forward to. On the plus side, I can stop by my accountant and learn how things worked out with social security.

BK, after the tsuris of last week's emails involving plucked and bowed strings and me and your email yesterday advising  you "not to pay attention to the people on the castrec group," I'm starting to think you need to send some email senders directly to Junk and never read them. I looked over the entire FOLLIES thread on the Castrecl archive this morning, and I would swear I've seen nothing negatve: people are either falling over themselves to wax enthusiastically about the rcording or to weep profusely that their copy has yet to arrive.

I did notice on the Original Cast Site on Facebook that a certain poster who's caused trouble for recording sessions in the mid-1990s has been praising the remix to the skies, and my initial reaction was astonishment. Perhaps if you want to encourage this email sender to be more specific on what was being said negatively on Castrecl - it might be in a paragraph ofcomments from an entirely different post - more could be deciphered, but I would swear I recall seeing nothing negative.

More coffee.

I liked the twists of last night's episode of THE CLOSER, one happily didn't go where you suspect it would and one that really shocked the hell out of me.

So, will we learn who's the informant? Will the rapist-killer be apprehended? What's happening to those actors not going on to MAJOR CRIMES? The suspense is killing me, I will be in Dublin on Aug 13 when the final episode airs. I'm hoping I can tape it, but - given the power problems in my apartment - I may return to find a blank tape. So, ifanyone is DVR-ing THE CLOSER episodes, I may need the final one!

I've been wishy-washy about buying this air conditioner, and I'm still waffling, mainly because of my incompetence with manual assembly. What happened to the old days of delivery crews and assembly?

TOD:

Sashimi is perhaps my favorite food. There is something clean and refreshing about slabs of the freshest fish that please me to no end.

I'm also a freak for well-made Thai food, whether it's a soothing soup with coconut milk and galangal root in it or a fiery green curry with bits of pork or shrimp swimming in the sauce. I made friends with people who ran a Thai restaurant in Port Charlotte, the town in Florida where I used to live. The food was so good that I, at times, ate there up to five days a week.

My favorite dish that Nancy, the chef, made was dessert: Thai donuts. These were small pillows of fried rice flour served scorching hot out of the fryer. They came with a dipping sauce flavored with vanilla, a touch of lemon and crushed peanuts. Boy, were they ever good.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Thai: a well-prepared pad thai. -I found a place near my brother's house that serves a wonderful version. In fact, the chef and her recipe were featured on The Food Network's "Throwdown with Bobby Flay". She won. I also love a good massamun curry.

Japanese: Toro (fatty tuna). When it's fresh, man is it that some good $tuff. Cooked-wise, I like negimaki and a comforting bowl of udon noodles.

Dr Lizeth Anderson just left my apartment. It's a part of my health insurance's new program, sending a doctor to visit and interview patients, check up on how they're doing, make sure they're on their meds, etc. This morning my blood pressure, lungs and heart are good, she asked me some questions I need to ask my doctor next week when I go in for my appointment, and the whole thing lasted around 45 minutes.

I guess I will now head down to Toyland and unpack more cartons.

TOD - I don't think I've ever eaten Thai.  Most of the Japanese cooking I've eaten has been prepared in our home by visitors from Japan.  In the early '90s, we hosted 3 college students for 3 weeks each and they were encouraged to offer to cook for their host families.  The first one, Kaori, had obviously never set foot in the kitchen, but she tried.  Mayumi brought a lot of Japanese microwave dishes and my lasting memory is her shouting "Three minutes, Mom!" from the bus as they left.  Yukko was a very accomplished cook.

My favorite Japanese cook is my cousin Dan, who has lived in Japan for 25+ years.  He cooked a fabulous salmon dinner for us last year and here he is cooking shrimp at my stove:

I've liked Thai food the few times I've thought to have some, but I couldn't tell you what I had.

I really like sushi, but again, something has to inspire me at the right moment to actually go have some -- which I can't do here, as the town I live in is not exactly a world famous sushi destination.  So, when at home, I satisfy the occasional craving with supermarket sushi.

I like tempura, but have I even had any in the last twenty years?  Why am I asking you?  Anyway, the last places I remember having tempura were in L.A. -- at some jernt in the Bonaventure Hotel, and at the jernt in Hollywood up the hill from the Magic Castle.  Yamashiro?

So, I listened to Follies.  I loved the way it sounded, loved that I heard percussion and piano better than I had in the past.  But I must admit, I never heard the original LP, just the CD which I got sometime in the 90's, so I can't revel in how "different" it sounds.  It's a brilliant score.

Yes, but there seems to be a glitch in accepting those terms as when you accept them, it asks you again.  And again, and again.....

Was this the movie you were talking about the other day, Mike?

Quote from Max Preeo:

Not sure what the justification is for?Fox's 1960 HIGH TIME, a "forced comedy" (Maltin) with Bing Crosby, Tuesday Weld, Fabian, and Richard Beymer among the participants.? The disc has an "isolated score track" for Henry Mancini's music, and there are some Jimmy Van Heusen/Sammy Cahn songs, including the hit "The Second Time Around."? Pre-order at:

Had a routine eye test and there's been a slight change so I've ordered new glasses. The opticians had a special offer of two for the price of one, so I've ordered sunglasses as well - even if the chance of getting any sun here for more than a few minutes, is fairly remote.

The other day, I bought some pepper bacon thinking that it would go nicely with a cheddar cheese omelet on Tuesday morning for breakfast.  (Being retired means big breakfasts aren't just for weekends any more!)

Well, this morning I fired fried up some of the bacon, it smelled so good that I ate it as soon as I had drained it.  Thus the omelet was never made.

Where did I say social security? I see Medicare.

I'm sure FJL envisioned the accountant coming over after the Medicare rep.

Yes, yes, that's it!  Thanks, Ron!   That must be what I was thinking!

Nice save. ;)

I suppose it is not a good idea to order sushi in Tacoma.  I can't tell you the number of times I have sent it back for being undercooked.

I have only had Thai food a couple of times.  I have no idea what I had, but it was beef (I think).

Japanese:  The is a restaurant that I used to love to go to in Seattle, called Bush Gardens, where you got to sit in your own tatami room.  I loved the tempura, the sukiyaki beef, and whatever else came with the family style dinner.  And I love Benihana's in Seattle, and Sakura's in Tacoma.

Yes, my Thai food would most certainly have been something beef (or beef something) or something chicken (or chicken something).

And I forgot sukiyaki.  Very much enjoyed that a couple of times.

I've not tried any Thai desserts.

My favorite Thai dessert is a mound of sweet-sticky rice - usually cooked with coconut milk - topped with slices of fresh mango. Warm rice + cold mango = YUMMY!

There's also a variation where the rice is topped with slices of a sweet egg custard. That's yummy too.

After we left Central Park, Yosh and I went to Ditch Plains where (one of our) favorite bartenders happened to be on duty tonight. I'm off to Rye Playland for the evening, which, for those of you who don't know, is a nice old amusement park just up the road from the Isle of Manhattan, on the shoreline at Long Island Sound.  It's not huge, and it isn't outstanding in every possible way, but it still has a number of great old rides and other attractions, is very attractive, and it has charm.  You probably wouldn't spend a whole day there, but it's a great place to relax and enjoy an evening.

Tom - Yep, that looks like the Ditch Plains Lobster Roll. -It's quite yummy too.

Yes, it looks wonderful.

I usually asked for it the "other" way - lobster meat, no mayo, just drizzled with melted butter and a sprinkle of celery salt and Old Bay.

Mmmm, I wish I had one of those for my dinner tonight!

Eye Health vibes to DH Keith!

Job Vibes to DR Craig!

Thanks.

All day Keith has been going on about how great he can see out of that eye now, and how aware he is that the other eye will soon need fixing.

Craig seems pleased with the school he will be working out.  It sounds much like our local school he enjoyed.  Only time will tell if it meets his expectations.

Had a routine eye test and there's been a slight change so I've ordered new glasses. The opticians had a special offer of two for the price of one, so I've ordered sunglasses as well - even if the chance of getting any sun here for more than a few minutes, is fairly remote.

Even in December I wore sunglasses in London. :)

I'm glad you told us a bit about Playland as I don't recall hearing about it.

My favorite Thai dish is pad see ew with tofu.  I like it mild.  The best place I've had this is at the first Thai restaurant we went to in Michigan.

Back from an omelet and a bagel, doing some banking, paying way too many Kritzerland bills (if we didn't have so many damn bills, Follies would have given us the Kritzerland cushion we've always wanted and needed - perhaps the next few releases will help do that now that Follies has enabled us to at least catch up).  My amazon package wasn't there, of course, and I just don't feel like going back there.  The helper is coming to get stuff at three.

And I am back from Toyland! It was a long, but very profitable day. Curtis came in and together we accomplished a lot. He set up McGlinn's computer and the sound system, and together we moved filing cabinets, furniture and tossed a lot of trash, Arnold, our cleaning man, will drop dead when he comes in and sees all the work he's got to clean out. While Curtis set up the computer and sound, I unpacked and shelved abpout 10 cartons of music and books.

Tomorrow, I'm doing nothing.

Thursday, I'll go back in and continue.

Occasionally I have had scrimp cocktail but it never really agreed with me.  I think I liked the sauce.  Sometimes Keith order's crab cakes and, if they are excellent, I like a few bites.  I don't eat them if they are mediocre.

I like clam dip & chowder but then they really aren't shellfish.

I enjoy Japanese food very much.  One of my favorite dishes is at a local restaurant in town, the eggplant roll.  I like to dip it in the tempura sauce & will order the sauce on the side if I don't get any tempura.  Once in a while I will order teriyaki salmon if a restaurant doesn't have a good vegetarian selection.

While not a sushi fan I've had excellent cucumber & avacado sushi.

According to DR George:

Go to http://photobucket.com.  To log in, the username is "HHWgroup" (capitalization doesn't matter) and the password is "guyhaines" ;) (both are without the " marks).  If you need to use the e-mail address, it's hhw4hhw@comcast.net.

Now, since the password is going around, anyone can use this.  Hopefully this will help with photos when the folder gets full...or even if it doesn't.  This can be used at any time.

When you log into Photobucket, click on the green "Upload" button and then the green "Select photos and videos" button and go to where your pictures are saved on your computer.  You can select a single picture or you can hold down the control key (on a Windows PC...I don't know about Macs) and select more than one picture, then click "Save."  You'll then get a screen with a blue box near the bottom, "Save and continue to my album."  Click that after you've selected all your photos.  They should then load into Photobucket.

Once loaded, you'll see a box labeled "IMG code" under each picture.  Click in the box and copy the code.  Then, all you have to do is create a message in HHW (it works for both a "reply," "quick reply" and even PMs) and paste the code into your message.

And Fixed AC Vibes to DR Danise!
Thank you DR TCB.  You all won't BELIEVE what the problem was.  It appears that whoever did the install didn't take the PLUG out of the drain hose and wrapped it and sealed it as well.  When the guys who came today couldn't figures out why it wouldn't drain they finely had to cut the drain hose and that's when they discovered the problem.  They couldn't believe it.  It takes a real rocket scientist to leave a plug in a hose.

Thank you, DR Nursie! I was doing that and I couldn't get the IMG code to behave!

I'll try again.

I had trouble finding the IMG code.  It is rather small.

First post again!  Wow!

The AC people will be here today in the afternoon.  Hoping they can find and FIX the problem.  I'm getting tired of climbing up into the attic.

Vibes of comfort to DR Elmore.
Vibes of healing to DR TCB and DR Cillaliz and DH Keith
Vibes of justice  to DR JRand
Vibes of taking it easy to DR Vixmom

Vibes of all kinds all other who need or want them!

Have a wonder filled day!

OY!!!!!!

I'm glad they solved the problem.  I guess the guys made a lot of ruckus over that one ;)

A little bad news.  Remember I told you all that Sheena and Toby had a knock down drag out?  Well Sheena has still been limping so I took her to the vet.  They wanted to do x rays but she wouldn't hold still.  I have to drop her off at the vet tomorrow and they will put her under in order to do the X-ray.  Hoping nothing is badly wrong and she needs surgery.

Here is hoping that Sheena is not seriously hurt.

No, she was not having an off day during the Tony award broadcast. She was better in the show than she was on the Tonys but the script is a pile of crap and I don't think any actress, no matter how brilliant could rescue it. The play sucks and when that's the problem it's almost impossible to fix.

I was watching the local news forecast on the ABC affiliate because I prefer it to NBC's local news staff.  I wasn't really paying attention (I was eating) when suddenly ABC News was on and before I could find the remote, they had spilled all of the results of tonight's Olympics.

How stupid can I get!

Re End of the Rainbow closing - it is now standard operating procedure for shows to not just post their closing notice but to do so while putting on a happy face of a tour, a film, and heaven knows what else.  In the old days, a damn flop just closed - and let me assure you End of the Rainbow is a damn flop.  Just close it, admit you were a flop and don't fill everyone up with a bunch of Fantasyland crap.  Every show that closes is preparing a tour.

Home from rehearsal. Now to record some cues for that Rupert Holmes musical.  A family member is trying to pitch it to a theatre company for next season.  I don't know the score well, hopefully the cues will suffice.  I hate recording....
