Title: A DEMENTED JIMINY CRICKET

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were demented and had the sound of crickets, and now it is time for you to post until the demented cows come home.

TOD  I like fish, but I don't actually cook it or eat it that often.   I like to make salmon patties out of canned salmon.  I'd love to hear more about how people prepare their fish.  I guess grilled with lemon butter or baked is how I would do it most of the time.

Well, think I'll try to get some more sleep.   In addition to waking with that panicked feeling, my shoulder was hurting after a fun evening at the ball park.  So hopefully the Aleve will make me a little sleepy

Good morning, all! I was up earlier than I expected, but perhaps I will nap when I get home from Toyland today. I have little to report this morning. I feel as though I am in a holding pattern.

Nine days and counting to Dublin! Last night I began my list of things to pack, from toiletries to a CD-rom of all the music files in case we need to reprint something. I need to book a barber appointment for Monday morning, and my week is filling up with a doctor's appointment and meetings with the record producer to run through the score's needs and with the director of the Appalachian Christmas show. When I get back, I'll need to go straight into that megillah.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vibes and Good Wishes for All! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ugh!  Like DR Ben, I'm coming off of a three day cold.  I could feel it coming on over the weekend when everything seemed to irritate me (moreso than normal.)  I slogged my way to work on Monday but by day's end I was out of it.  I've pretty much been in either a NightQuil or DayQuil stupor the past two days...
Over the weekend I notified two friends I could think of off the top of my head who stood a chance of wanting the "Follies" CD -- and neither has responded.  Summer vacations?  Mad at the world?  Who knows.  But I did my duty.  My duty is done.
I posted of my adventure with the LP late last night.  In summary, the sound was not only DOA, I had a warped-sounding off-center pressing.
Everyone was going cheap on pressings by this time.  I love the nice Capitol discs of the late 1950s, early 1960s, with the rainbow on black label design.
TOD: A restaurant in town serves a perfectly decadent potato-crusted halibut that's all crackly outside and soft, wonderful seafood at the center.
Sole is best with anything butter-based.
Salmon? I think I prefer it as sashimi, just simply cut and presented with a touch of daikon and pickled ginger on the side. Or maybe grilled. Or maybe sauteed. Or just gimme.
As far as choosing it and deciding how to prepare it, I'm terrible at that and usually have to ask for advice.  And then I invariably love it.  In fact, I can't think of a time I didn't invariably love it.  So I'm hoping I'll find some of that lovely kind of advice right here today.
DR CHAS SMITH - my FOLLIES LP played a bit funny.....but then I realized that it was because it was the first record I had played on this CD/phono system, and I hadn't removed the twist tie from the tone arm....
After I did that it played normally.....although one of the things I did check was to see if the hole was in the middle of the record....it was.
TOD:
I love all fish, but particularly trout, salmon, mackerel (as in 'holy')and eel (is that a fish?)
There are many types of fish I have yet to try, although when I visited Japan I am sure I ate some that I didn't know what it was. But it was all good. Oh, I remember I did have mud-fish, and it was quite tasty, head, tail, and all.
I rarely cook fish myself, as I am too lazy and it never seems to turn out as good as I think it should. But when eating out I often will have it.
Great to hear the news about "Dogfight," Jose. The songs in "A Christmas Story" are quite a lot of fun (with a bright Jule Styne-style overture), so I'm looking forward to hearing the new score.
I like 90 percent of Scarlet Pimpernel, but "Storybook" is my #1 fave. Influences in this show are all over the place, from Les Miserables to Barry Manilow. And the overproduced Peabo Bryson top-40 "Whole New World"-type recording makes one's eyes roll a bit. LOL.
I don't mind the yelling so much as the lack of original stories. Does everything have to be based on a pre-existing movie script or a hit songwriter's body of work? "Book of Mormon" notwithstanding, of course.
Good Morning! Good Afternoon!
I'm up, I'm up... And I tried one of the new smoothies at City Bakery this morning: organic bananas, organic coffee (cold-brewed)' organic dates, organic cocoa nibs. Maury Rubin, the owner of City Bakery, said it would be intense, it was! I'm sure there was enough caffeine to fuel me for the rest of the day. I'm still buzzing!
Well, think I'll try to get some more sleep.   In addition to waking with that panicked feeling, my shoulder was hurting after a fun evening at the ball park.  So hopefully the Aleve will make me a little sleepy
Were you pitching?
Ugh!  Like DR Ben, I'm coming off of a three day cold.  I could feel it coming on over the weekend when everything seemed to irritate me (moreso than normal.)  I slogged my way to work on Monday but by day's end I was out of it.  I've pretty much been in either a NightQuil or DayQuil stupor the past two days...
As for the Topic of the Day...
Halibut - Broiled or Pan-Seared
Filet of Sole - Sautéed in butter.
Salmon - A sushi/sashimi, but also broiled with miso. I also like Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten's olive oil poaching method: cover the filet in olive oil. Bake in a slow oven - 200 degrees - for about 20 minutes, or until desired doneness. Place filet on paper towels to drain off the excess oil. Luscious! Like buttah! And hardly any fishy smell in the kitchen too!
I'm trying my best to swing, DR JRand. Well... Maybe not swing... Not that there's anything wrong with that... In any case...
I leave for Palo Alto on Monday for two weeks, and then I'm only back for two and half weeks once I'm back. I'm just trying to fit in as much as I can while I'm here.
Good morning, all! I was up earlier than I expected, but perhaps I will nap when I get home from Toyland today. I have little to report this morning. I feel as though I am in a holding pattern.
Nine days and counting to Dublin! Last night I began my list of things to pack, from toiletries to a CD-rom of all the music files in case we need to reprint something. I need to book a barber appointment for Monday morning, and my week is filling up with a doctor's appointment and meetings with the record producer to run through the score's needs and with the director of the Appalachian Christmas show. When I get back, I'll need to go straight into that megillah.
[
How many performances will it play in Megillah?
A nice remedy for this, of course, is the remastered "Follies".  Have you heard it, DR BrettySpaghetti?
"Follies" is one of those Sondheims I've never been able to get into. Even saw a lavish production of it in London a few years ago. I find the music boring. However, I did recently spend a couple of weeks finally getting to know "A Little Night Music" and that was much more to my liking.
Good to see you too, Jane! :)
Here is the latest member of our family....Rose.
She was abandoned in the trailer park where my brother Kent's stepdaughter lives.  She brought him to Kent, and Kent brought her to our house yesterday.
She goes to the vet on Wednesday for a look see.  She is very well behaved, likes to sleep in rooms where people are sitting down or lying in bed.....is housetrained.....and doesn't bark very often.....
T.O.D.
Since I moved into an apartment thirteen years ago, I have avoided cooking fish at home.  I wish some of my neighbors would do the same.
I love halibut and chips in the summer, especially down the street at Anthony's.  I also like a nice light tempura battered halibut.
Stuffed sole is wonderful.  Actually sole with most types of sauce is nice, because it really doesn't have much flavor on its own.
Salmon is best served on someone else's plate or in the round receptacle under the sink.
I really like Scarlet Pimpernel, especially "Into the Fire," which is a number I found so thrilling that it transformed the evening in the theater the first time I saw the show in previews,
There's that one song "Where's the Girl" which has a section that always reminds me of the pop song "Would you like to ride my beautiful balloon" but I like the song anyway
Funny you mention "Where's the Girl." That is one song that ALWAYS reminds me of something I can't quite put my finger on, but it sounds like a mixture of several Barry Manilow songs—"Even Now" and "Could it Be Magic," and maybe something else as well. As a rabid Jimmy Webb fan, I didn't notice the "Up Up and Away" similarity, but I'll listen for that. One thing is for sure—"Where's the Girl" is derivative as hell!
I like "Into the Fire" a lot. Very passionate! Lyrically, it always makes me think of "Walk Through the Fire" from "Once More With Feeling," the Buffy the Vampire musical. Musically, though, it would fit perfectly in Les Miz. In fact, at the very end of the song, when he sings, "Onward ho!" I always substitute, "Jean Valjean!"
What would be the next logical Frank Wildhorn musical to discover? He seems to have hundreds of them! Jekyll & Hyde, Cyrano, Civil War, Dracula, Monte Cristo, Tears of Heaven, Bonnie & Clyde, et al. Are any as good as Pimpernel?
Just finalized all the shipping arrangements for the huge Follies poster - I'm doing the white glove service, which means they uncrated it, bring it into the house, and remove the crate.  It would cost even more for me to have someone come out here and remove the crate, so it's worth it.  I'm told it will be in LA on Tuesday, but then the white glove people won't deliver it until Thursday, most likely, but during a two-hour window so I don't have to wait around all day.
And to me, the mother of all "Fire" songs was the Chaka Khan recording "Through the Fire" - which I think never really set the charts on fire, but somehow seemed to be blasting on the speakers everywhere in New York during my single years.
She was abandoned in the trailer park where my brother Kent's stepdaughter lives.  She brought him to Kent, and Kent brought her to our house yesterday.
She goes to the vet on Wednesday for a look see.  She is very well behaved, likes to sleep in rooms where people are sitting down or lying in bed.....is housetrained.....and doesn't bark very often.....
One of my best friends is getting married on Saturday. I'm doing the music of for the ceremony and the DP is making the cake. Sounds easy, huh?  Well, we're not really crazy about who she is marrying.  So, all our prep is quite the labor of.. what we don't know.  The DP is busy at work this week 12+ hour days, when he gets home, the last thing he wants to do is make a wedding cake for a wedding he's not crazy about to begin with.  Plus, the brides cake ideas were off the wall, which the DP isn't thrilled about.  I've been making the cake for the past few days while he's at work.  4 layers, each a different flavor.   Anyhow, bottom line, it will be great and his cake will be a masterpiece as usual.  The music for the ceremony will be lovely.
Oh, and we leave for Munich on Sunday evening.  It's been a week.
Oh now, Fred, Chalka Khan wasn't even born during your single years!
TCB, I think you're confusing Chaka Khan with famed Olympic skater Sasha Cohen, probably because some people used to sing Sasha Cohen's name to the "Chaka Khan" song.  It's a very logical mistake, TCB.
Chaka Khan is actually about seven years older than me.
For a while, I didn't realize that when people referred to "Sasha Cohen," they weren't referring to Sacha Baron Cohen.
Me too, just kidding.  Nobody ever really actually confused Chaka with the much much younger (and Jewish) Sasha - although they really did sing Sasha's name to Chaka's song.
Saw Chaka Khan headlining in Vegas at the Venetian in a show that Billy Porter created and directed.  It felt very very promising, and I see the show is still in Billy Porter's bio, but it never went on from there.  Just a reminder that so many shows are developed that look really good and look really entertaining, but sometimes the process just stops.  I'm so glad to have seen it, and I'd wondered why it never went on.
Just coming off a torrid two-week love affair with the "Scarlet Pimpernel" score(s). Any fans of this show here?
I think "Storybook" may be the one Frank Wildhorn song I like.
I'm with you, DR John G! I think a law should be passed forbidding Frank Wildhorn, who has a propensity for vomiting second-rate music and lyrics,  near a Broadway theatre. I had to sit through the PIMPERNEL so Mr Wildhorn owes me big.
And I am home from Toyland! The office no longer looks as though the movers found an empty space and tossed into it as much junk as they could.  Skip Kennon came in and did a fantastic job of organizing a lot of books, and I worked on getting the working office into shape. When Curtis arrived, we dealt with moving too much sound equipment - McGlinn had tons! - and organizing the various rooms in the suite. Things are looking good.
Sounds like it was a really interesting take on Hamlet, they were very impressed with it.  I kind of wished I could have made it sound like "I'm so tuned in to D.C. theater" but it was just luck that I'd been out to dinner with BK when she mentioned it.
I didn't realize until today that they'd decided to go see it.  If I'd known, I might have asked BK if he could have asked Sandy to say hello to them, these are people that really would have enjoyed meeting a performer.  Always easy in hindsight, I guess.
Some folks on the net seem to think the roots of "Where's the Girl" from PIMPERNEL are in
parts of the music of Earth Wind and Fire's "FANTASY"
but I wonder: if a song reminds different people of so many different songs, then even if it ain't "original" maybe it's not copying?
Too twisted?  :)
DR JANE!!!!!  I have worked very hard all day not to see who won the all around at tonights women's gymnastics.  It is my favorite event of the whole Olympics....And you liked the photo on facebook so it came up on my page.  ARG!!!!!  I know you didn't mean to do that but man....
I am so sorry.  I feel terrible I didn't think of that.  If I hadn't just read a story about the person I wouldn't have liked it.  I will not like anymore Olympic photos again.
I'm not mad at you.  I know you didn't mean to spoil anything, you would never do something like that on purpose.   It's not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things.  I don't know any details about what happened, so there may still be drama or other fun things to watch.  It just shocked me to see it right there when I tried so hard not to know.  I accidentally heard the winner of a swimming race I was looking forward to.  Guess tonight isn't my night to be surprised.
Back from my art classes, during which I received notice that I did, indeed, win the contest on Kathryn's Facebook page!  Thank you to everyone who "liked" my photo - I'll post another one of my Grand Traveler when I get it.
congrats DR Ginny.  Now that's a photo I'm glad everyone "liked"
I "unliked" the photo.  Did doing so remove it?
I don't know, I "hid" the photo as soon as I saw it.
While I feel bad I don't think you are mad at me personally.  I'm glad you told me.  I didn't even realize "liking" the photo would share it with everyone of my friends.
DR Ginny does your book group ever change the book you plan to read after deciding on it?
I had to change our September book when we switched hostesses & have an unhappy member.  Since the original hostess had a stroke I didn't expect flack about it.  Funny because another member was thrilled not to have to read the original book.
NPR ruined most of tonight's Olympics for me and Facebook finished it off.  Not that I think they'll show the story that was revealed on Facebook - a Middletown girl won the gold for women's judo.
No, but I had a big hostessing flap back in January that I'm still tiptoeing around...
And today we have a dress-code problem with the Hibernian Club, where I am staying. "Jackets are required at all times." No, sir. Find me a new lodging.
Is that the same place you stayed last time?
Interesting.  It isn't always the end that is spoiled, often it is how the story unravels that is ruined.  I hate when someone tells me a joke before I see it.  There delivery is usually never as good.
When we switched hostesses I wasn't about to tell the new hostess what book she had to discuss.  Personally I was also glad the book was changed. :)
When I got home tonight, Sheena came out from the doghouse so I guess she got out but couldn't get back in.  She really wanted in the house and the AC.  Poor girl.  I bet she was hot today.  She is stretched out by my feet.  She didn't take the splint off like I thought she would.  She's such a good girl.
Do you think she will go outside again tomorrow knowing she can't get back in the house?
Most certainly.  Funny that now I'm home she waits by the door for me to open it for her.
Thursday morning greetings!  I'm in a bit of a rush, because I have to be in the northern Cincinnati 'burbs at 12:30 for my Zentangle (http://www.zentangle.com) class, followed by my Copic Marker (http://copicmarker.com) class.  Have a couple of stops to make along the way.
My gosh, our Ginny has become a hippie!
DR TCB, Zentangle is so reminiscent of the "op art" of the 1960s.  Also, my dad's high school biology drawings.  I've framed some of those to hang in our kitchen - things like the cross-section of an orange, etc.
What happened to the good restaurants?
Sung to the tune of "Class" from CHICAGO:
Whatever happened to good rest'rants and nice waiters and fair prices?
That's all I got...anyone want to continue? :D
George, did you figure out who Gabe is?
Yes, he's playing Titus' brother, Marcus.
Is the cane part of his character, or does he use it offstage, as well?
The actor is able-bodied...the cane is a prop and was actually used in TAO's production of "A Bucket of Blood" this spring.  What's cool is that it actually has a sword in the cane part!  This is sort of what it looks like, but I've never seen the handle up close, so I'm pretty sure that it doesn't have the reclining lady that's shown here...but you get the idea:
I am looking for a real-life Lisbeth Salander - anyone know such a person?
For some reason I was thinking you meant someone that looked like her. And then I read Kristin Chenoweth and cracked up. :)
(saw you meant good with computers).
I was thinking BK meant for an Outside the Box episode with a musical version of "Dragon Tattoo." I could just see Kristin in the leather and the mohawk singing about being misunderstood to no one in particular.
A nice low-keyed evening here.  Cleaned the microwave for the microwave repairman's visit tomorrow.  Watched some Olympics while laundry got done, then listened to a few tracks of THE FLY.  Really nice music there.
Oh, and a big Fail for me today:  I was at the store, picked up a few of my usual things, and proceeded to COMPLETELY forget that I had planned on bringing home some What Is It, Fish.
