Well, you've read the notes, the notes were musical, and now it is time for you to post until the musical cows come home.

First post!

I feel better this morning.  I just felt so cranky and tired yesterday.  I hate it when I'm that way.

Sheena is doing well.  Still has the splint on and is being very good about it.  I have to let her out and in but even in that she is being such a good girl with asking to go.

You know I love Meat Loaf.  Not sure I would use that song as my first wedding dance.  I've always dreamed of the closing theme from "LadyHawke"==when the music slows down, not the first part.

Vibes to all who need them.

Laundry awaits me today.  I will be so grateful when (or should I say "if") they ever get started on building the place for my new washer/drier.

Good morning, all!  Because I am sick of the chaos here, I will climb the three flights of stairs at least five times this morning to do the laundry and company in the afternoon. I am not happy about it, but I don't work well in chaos, and there's enough of that in the apartment as this week gets crazier as my departure date nears. DR vixmom, I will be at JFK while you are at LGA. Aer Lingus.

I have nothing else to report at the moment. Perhaps more later.

Hope they get the elevator fixed soon, Elmore.

I hope so, too! I've got a neighbor across from me who's 74, and I don't know how he's coping with the stairs. He can hardly walk as it is and the building management should be pushing the repair if only to insure he and the other two elderly tenants can get about. Since the elevator's down, we can't get to the basement to take out the garbage, so I've got empty bottles, other recyclables, and boxes accumulating and I am not happy at all.

Good morning, all.

Another order of elevator and a/c VIBES for DR Elmore!

Which brings us to:

Following two solid months of wonderfully solid performance, the eventually-to-be-replaced central a/c here popped its circuit breaker last night.  First time all season.  I reset it and it started up again, and it will most likely keep working that way, but I'll have to keep a closer eye on it and give it long breaks whenever possible.

I'm grateful, though.  I never dreamed I'd get these two excellent months out of it.  And at least it isn't a matter of waiting on landlords or management companies to get off the dime.  The whole replacement process can be done within a couple of days.  It only requires my taking a deep breath, picking up the phone, and committing to forking over........ $6,000.

Or, as Tucker would exclaim in "The Ruling Class"....... six thousand smackers!

Sunday morning greetings!  After my rough night on Friday, I am most grateful to have had a peaceful sleep last night.  We're having some much needed rain this morning.

I am looking forward to seeing Richard for the first time since we went our separate ways from Lima on July 20.  He's there this morning for church after being at Nashotah House (seminary in Wisconsin) these past 2 weeks.

One more CUPPA, then I must pull myself together and mow the yard in advance of this afternoon's thunderstorms moving in.

There's a small line crossing NY state right now, but things look positively wicked over Ohio.  I trust things are okay in DR Ginny Territory?

We have not flown in 4 years -  I was surprised (unpleasantly) to learn that we now have to pay for checked extra to check luggage - no free bags - that we had to pay to select our seats ( I did spring for the bulkhead seating though -  in for a penny in for a pound!) and that we needed to buy a new lock for the luggage that allows the TSA to open our luggage if they choose to inspect it

I am also not sure what to expect at security re body scans and pat downs/feel ups etc

Surprised!  I have to laugh.  This is example how we don't really pay attention unless something relates to us.  Discussions of luggage fees have been plentiful.

Don't forget to take your shoes and belt off & put them in the box they give you.  Keep your eyes on your belongings & don't leave jewelry or other valuables visible.  Keith tucks his into the toes of his shoes.

If by chance you get pulled out for the body inspection don't stress about it.  It is almost funny.  I always do mine in the open though they offer you a private room.

I'm going to look at exercise bikes while I'm at the mall.  My friends do long distance biking trips.  They are already talking about planning some short trips on flat land so I can get started with them, but I'm thinking I need to start getting my legs in shape and start building my stamina before I even try that

If you have a lap top take it out of the bag and place it in it's own tray/box/whatever you call it.  You also have to take off any jackets.  It's really not that bad.

My pathetic weed-ridden excuse for a yard has been duly mown.  Mowed?  Mown is right, isn't it?  The speller doesn't like it.

And my goodness, it's still hot and humid out there.  Still got a little weed-whacking to do before the outdoor portion of the day's toiling is done.

I just finished the new Lorenz Hart biography A Ship Without A Sail, and, for the first time, I have some sympathy for Richard Rodgers, who in most accounts of Hart's death and estate megillah is usually portrayed as the villain. This is really a dual biography of a partnership - without going into detals about Rodgers' life, his drinking problems or philandering - in which one partner expends his energies in moving his career forward to more success while the other uses the same energy in a downward spiral of alcoholism and self-destruction.

As most people know I visit my folks in Montreal quite often.

Unfortunately it is off season for the two major Canadian air lines. If I want to fly to Montreal from Fort Lauderdale (which is 20 minutes from me) I have to fly to Toronto first (usually with a several hour layover) and then to Montreal.

So at this time of year I have to go to Miami International (about 1 hour away from me) to get a non stop flight to Montreal.

I bring this up in response to a posting Vixmom did yesterday.

Even with storms down here the temperature rarely goes down. It is currently 95% which makes it over 100% with the heat index/humidity.

So I just try to stay in with the AC as much as possible.

Vixmom, this is what I do to get through the security line quickly:

* Pack your bag so that everything that must be taken out (laptop, ziplock bags) is in one compartment so you can grab them easily without having to think about where they are. You can move your stuff to different compartments after you go through security.
* When you get to the airport, go into the restroom and remove your belt and empty your pockets. If you end up going through a naked machine everything shows up -- including your driver's license, a tissue, etc. Remove EVERYTHING from your pockets.
* Have your driver's license clipped to your boarding pass.
* While the TSA officer is looking at your license, look over the security lanes and see which ones are using the metal detector and which are using the naked machine. Big airports will probably have both going. Get in the metal detector line.
* Wear slip-on shoes. Much easier to get off and back on again.
* Put your shoes and ziplock bag of travel-size things in one bin.
* Laptops must be removed from the case. The cords don't need to be removed. Put the laptop in its own bin.
* Lay your travel bag on its side on the belt.

I have never flown out of the US, so I don't know what to do about customs.

When we first moved here we had to stop in San Francisco before continuing on to Los Angeles.  We were thrilled when a non-stop flight opened.  The flight times aren't the best though.  To go non-stop we take off from Medford at 6:30AM & return at 10:30PM.

You are very organized

I also carry extra ziplock bags in case mine rips.
I insist Keith went through the body imaging on our last trip & he insists he didn't ;D
I used to wear slip on shoes but then my sturdy tennis shoes are more comfortable to wear, plus they weigh more in the suitcase.

Vixmom, usually airlines permit one suitcase for international travel.  Canada doesn't count?

Once I don't have to carry my injection I might opt, as much as I protest it, for the body imaging vs the metal detector.  I think with the full body scan I won't need pat downs anymore because the artificial ball in my shoulder will be visible.

When I first began the pat downs I couldn't take my belt off so they let me leave it on.  My last flight was the first time I had to take it off.

Where the hell is the storm?

I've finished reading Robert Sherwood's last play, a 1957 comedy iSmall War On Murray Hill, about the same 1776 events in Manhattan that inspired DEAREST ENEMY. I sort of liked it. It's essentially a rewrite of his 1927 comedy The Road To Rome, with General Sir William Howe replacing Hannibal and Mrs Robert Murray replacing Amytas (the 1920s comedy was turned into the film JUPITER'S DARLING), and the American Revolution replacing Hannibal's march on Rome. I like the libretto for DEAREST ENEMY better.

I try to travel light.  My big problem is that I need to carry too many creams & liquids.  I need my own products cuz of my allergies.

I really don't find the pat down a big deal.  So far they have been very nice & often apologetic.  I've done it so often now I wish they would just do it without narrating exactly what they are about to do & making sure I understand.

I'm going to look at exercise bikes while I'm at the mall.  My friends do long distance biking trips.  They are already talking about planning some short trips on flat land so I can get started with them, but I'm thinking I need to start getting my legs in shape and start building my stamina before I even try that

I thought that your bike had an electric option. Couldn't you use that if you get too tired on bike rides with more experienced riders?

Actually, Ms. Murphy as Phyllis is fairly amazing, even when she flubs a lyric in "The Story of Lucy and Jessie." It's Elmore's favorite, Victoria Clark (and that connection will ever be made), who's a bit too insipid as Sally. Victor Garber is a really good Ben Stone, likeable despite being fatuous.

Mimi Hines was Hattie, and she too, flubbed a lyric, but she simply started the song over again and made it seem as if Hattie had caused it. It was a great bit of adlibbing.

Joanne Worley was Stella.

Or, as Tucker would exclaim in "The Ruling Class"....... six thousand smackers!

we make do with fans

From DR Vixmom:
Quote

I guess I thought that all the changes were happening only to US airlines and I kind of expected that since we were flying Air Canada their luggage and flight assignment policies would have stayed constant.....a forlorn hope as it turns out

my concern is that we have to do this security thing three times - out of New York, then Toronto and then Calgary.....I am particularly concerned about Toronto as the layover time is relatively short and from past experience it appears that there apparently is  a rule that  every living person in Canada is required to report to Toronto airport whenever we travel,  and get in the security line

The only electronics he needs to take out is the laptop. Just tell him to wind the cords for everything up neatly so they can see what it is.

USUALLY once you go through security, you are in the secure area. You would only need to go through the checkpoint again if you change terminals. (Las Vegas is an exception, I found out. Right after buying a bottle of water.)

For two weeks you need to check bags. Then you wouldn't have to worry about the  3 oz liquid rule and all that. It would be much easier to get through the security lines.

Check into the security rules for Canada, though. They may not be the same as the US. And I know nothing about coming back into the US through customs.

Well, I have been most errant and truant this weekend.  We had performances of "Titus" each night (all have been good shows) and on Saturday, Theater Artists Olympia had a garage sale...in the VERY hot weather.  Even though I was in shade, I feel like I have a sunburn, but I didn't turn pink.  That's good.  After the show last night, we had a cast party at Kevin's house.  Kevin and I were in "Romeo & Juliet" together.  He's a great guy and his wife Jim (yes, his female wife goes by the name of Jim...long story and I don't remember it) is a very nice person, too. :) I was one of the last two to leave the party at about 3:30 am.

When I finally got up to take a shower this afternoon, it was 87.5° F up in my bedroom!

At the theater, the stage manager, the light board operator and I are in a tiny little room with windows that look out over the stage and there is NO air conditioning.  It gets VERY hot in there and the two little fans that we have don't really help much at all. :P

I can only hope that next weekend is much, much, MUCH cooler!

Since Follies is still on everyone's mind

Here is This Is Your Life---Alexis Smith

From the stage of the Shubert Theater during the curtain call of FOLLIES

Jerry Blunt from LACC (Chairman of Drama Dept) is a guest

That's pretty cool!  I don't think that I've ever seen Alexis Smith in any interviews...at least, not that I can remember.
