Title: DREAM FLIES

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were dreamy and flew by, and now it is time for you to post until the dream cows, like the Dream Laurie, come home.

And here is the new Kritzerland CD.  It will be live on the Kritzerland site at six, but for anyone who can't wait, you know what to do.

Kritzerland is pleased to present a world premiere limited edition soundtrack release:

THE STRANGE LOVE OF MARTHA IVERS

Music Composed and Conducted by Miklós Rózsa

It was 1946 and film noir was everywhere, from low budget quickies to major studio releases.  Of course, the studios didn’t realize they were making films noir, since that term had just been coined by French film critic Nino Frank. The noirs of 1946 included: The Killers, The Blue Dahlia, The Big Sleep, Gilda, The Postman Always Rings Twice, The Stranger, The Dark Mirror, The Black Angel and The Strange Love of Martha Ivers.

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers was an “A” picture from Paramount, produced by Hal B. Wallis. It featured a terrific cast, including Barbara Stanwyck (who’d been in the classic noir Double Indemnity two years prior), Van Heflin, smoky-voiced Lizabeth Scott, Judith Anderson and, in his film debut, a young actor named Kirk Douglas.  It’s a terrific picture with wonderful dialogue, elegant direction and great performances – it’s noir, it’s melodrama, and the whole film crackles with electricity.  And perfectly capturing every mood, every character and every situation is the classic score by Miklós Rózsa.

The music for The Strange Love of Martha Ivers is almost a second cousin to Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend, filled with the incredible Rózsa sound of that era. No one did this kind of thing better than Rózsa – he seemed to have a real affinity for these darker tales. The main title is everything a classic main title should be: It draws you in right from those great Rózsa-esque opening chords, introduces its beautiful main theme and then segues directly into the first cue for the young runaways.  From there, Rózsa’s music weaves its magic, perfectly capturing the film’s moods, situations and characters as they travel their dark roads.

The surviving music from Martha Ivers was taken from a set of incredible-sounding acetates preserved in the Paramount vaults.  It’s almost fifty minutes of prime Rózsa and it’s nearly most of the score, with only a handful of missing cues.  Only two tracks had material that was beyond repair – one of those tracks was only twenty-four seconds long and the material contained therein was well represented elsewhere.  For the other track, through careful editing, we were able to save ninety percent of it and again, the material that wasn’t salvageable was represented elsewhere in the other cues.

Miklós Rózsa is in the pantheon of greats, and it’s really gratifying to bring one of his classic noir scores to CD.

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.

CD will ship the third week of September  – however, never fear, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Good morning, all! I just lost a long post, which burns my ass. This Macbook has its own logic I have not yet learned, but I could not get the page to scroll down, and I was pressing the correct damned key.

Last night, I had dinner with one of our Dublin producers, Jonathan, whose father and companion were beaten and robbed over a month ago. Jonathan's report on his dad and his father's lady friend were good. After dinner, we walked the Grafton Street area and he showed me an easy route to Walton's, where we will rehearse Tuesday-Thursday.

I'm free today until the car picks me up for tonight's chorus rehearsal. I may go shopping on Grafton Street and there's a wonderful bookstore I'd like to visit. I may also walk in St Stephen's Green for a bit. I also need to stop at a Bank of Ireland and convert some currency.

I've finished seven chapters of HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY. How did I ever miss reading this glorious book?

Well, the weather in Dublin is cool, about 67 at the moment, but the humidity is terrible. I walked to Grafton Street for postcards and to the wonderful Hodges & Figgis book store, stopped to browse in HMV, and I was soaked to the skin with sweat by the time I got back to the club Ugh.

I just learned what the Snooker Room is and I feel quite informed.

Monday morning greetings!  We are up earlier than usual for a Monday because we're taking Mary Linda's old car to get the carpets and seats steam cleaned before she shows it to a potential buyer.  She and Rob tried to do this on Saturday, but were told an appointment was needed.  Works OK for us, because I also have to go this morning for a blood test.

I remember before you left you were talking about there being some Borking and maybe a bit of Aer Lingus on the trip.  Does the Snooker Room relate to that in some way?  This sounds like a trip i really would have enjoyed in my twenties or thirties, i don't know that i would have the energy for all this excitement in my fifties or sixties, so please pace yourself.

I have to admit that I don't listen to podcasts as much as I used to.  I was a big fan of Dan Savage's weekly podcast, mostly because listening to it made me feel that I was nowhere near as perverse as I sometimes thought I was.

Good morning, all.

There's much to respond to this morning, as I was mostly away from keyboard through the evening yesterday.  I will get to it all in time.

As for the Right Now.....what else?.....COFFEE.

I was angered, however, by NBC's bait-and-switch game of trying to force its audience to watch one of its new sitcoms about a monkey, instead of continueing showing the remainder of the ceremonies which included a performance by The Who.  I promptly switched off the TV.

I watched only a few bits here and there of the closing ceremonies.  And I hope that cheap stunt with the new sitcom brings in plenty of ridicule to NBC.  They got what they asked for -- I changed the channel.

Also, something went weird with the programming, or the programming guide, for the 3-D repeat channel on Comcast.  I was complaining yesterday that they apparently weren't going to show the expected day-after repeat of the closing ceremonies.  But yesterday they were showing some Olympics even though other programs were listed.  Just checked now.  Other stuff is still listed, and they're still showing Olympics.

Weird, I tell you.  It's just:   weird.

Congrats to DR Elmore on making his way around Dublin.  It sounds fascinating.  But damp.  I know we have cool but humid days like that here once in a while, but it does seem especially fitting that it be especially damp in a Foreign Land.

i need to step out and purchase a sewing kit. I should have packed one from home and I didn't. I also packed the wrong pair of trousers and I have an iron-on patch that needs reinforcement. I hate travel and I hate packing.

Damn!

DR DougR, I love Dublin, and I'm very happy to be back. Why I didn't pack another pair of trousers instead of the comfortable rags I wear at home is beyond me. I'm sure Briona the receptionist can tell me where to find what I need.

Dear god!  I thought I was joking with the borking, and the lingus and the snooker, but elmore seems to be living in the middle of an old-fashioned door-slamming sex farce over there.  All you need is Ken Ludwig to write the script and we'll be set for a nice year-long, money-losing run at the Music Box.

I am back in California, for a few days anyway.  Flight home was close to unbearable, but we landed safely.  Loved Munich, but probably won't go back.  I'd like to see other parts of Germany, though.   We had a lovely time in Salzberg on "The Sound of Music" tour, which was so much fun.  We also went to Neuschwanstein, which was great - even the trek up the mountain was great. and it was quite a trek.  Much sausage was eaten and much beer was consumed, as well as schnitzel with noodles - one of my favorite things.

I've caught up on the notes.  Will try and ketchup on the posts.

Yesterday was very busy.  Went to the lake and mom gave me a walnut vanity with a mirror that I used to have in my room and the lake when I was growing up and that I had at my apartment in college.   Her comment was "now, nothing else in here is your's right?"  I had to laugh.  I was concerned about getting the vanity in the house, but I took out all the drawers and took the mirror off the back and was able to carry it upstairs myself.   It made me feel like I can actually do things with my left arm again.

The vanity needs to be refinished.  It's taken a beating over the years being in the guest house.  Looks like the boys(or my sister) have left beer bottles on it and there are rings about that size.  I figure that's a project for the future

I also decided I'm not going to paint the spare room any time soon, so I put the door back on, moved furniture around and set the TV back up in there.   The walls look terrible, part wallpaper ripped off, part colors I'm testing etc, but at least the upstairs furniture is where I want it for now and I can actually walk through all the rooms.

Right now I'm at home while the AC guy services my air conditioner.   My AC guy is actually Edith's husband.  Since my ac and furnace are new since I bought the hosue. He talked me into a service contract.  He comes out twice a year and cleans and tunes the ac in and outside and the furnace.  The best part is, should it go out in the middle of the night in the middle of the winter, they come and don't charge overtime.

Ok, it isn't anything fancy, but I've always liked it.  It belonged to the mother of my mom's best friend.  The previous owner is now 100 years old, or maybe 101, living in either assisted living or the nursing home, but still is sharp as a tack

Whew!  Chris used the water faucet in the back of the house to clean off the outside ac unit and couldn't get the water to shut off.  Luckily, I was able to do it.  Now I need to get a plumber to replace that faucet and to fix the other outside faucet. I think it has something inside blocking the water flow because it doens't get much water at all to come out.  I'm just hoping it can wait until the cash flow improves a little.  I'm still catchin up from July

Hope you're enjoying Dublin DR elmore3003. I was there about 8 years ago but the streets were in a mess then because they were laying down tram lines.

:(

I think we were lucky to experience Dublin in December.

I was distressed to learn that the people who lived across the street from me and who had always maintained an immaculate front yard (unlike my attempts at Darwinian gardening) had lost their home to foreclosure. I didn't know them very well. They spoke Spanish and not much English. But they were always friendly and had an adorable little girl.

:(  I hope they will be ok.

Keith was working in London so I tagged along.  During the days I entertained myself walking around the city & had lunch with an English cousin.  Best of all, Keith had to take the train to Cambridge.  While he worked I enjoyed the sights.   After a few days I flew to The Isle of Man to spend the night with family and from there met Keith in Dublin for a few days of vacation.  We were supposed to stay longer in Ireland and do a bit of touring but, as often happened, Keith had to return to work sooner than expected.

The smoke outside is getting worse.  The fires are only 20 miles away so I'm not too surprised.  I feel bad for the demolition crew having to breath the smoke along with all the dust they are creating.

LOL.  I only read the question, not the quote above it. ::)

We were living in Northern California when Keith retired.  We first came to Ashland in October when we were missing the fall colors and decided to move here.  Had we still been on the East Coast when Keith retired we likely would be living in New Hampshire or Maine.   It is funny though, except for hiking, we rarely take advantage the extras that enticed us here.  This is a college town & we have lots of theater from the big Shakespeare Festival to the Cabaret Theater and much more.  I like that we are nestled between two mountain ranges.  What I don't like is the inconvenience & expense of flying most places.

The BBC have begun showing a four part Wallander with Rolf Lassgard. It's "The Fifth Woman" made in 2002. Another well made atmospheric Wallander film but what spoils it for me is the incredibly heavy grainy photography which is like looking at a constant snowfall. I don't believe it's an advantage for any film to look like that - it just looks ugly. Although no doubt the Blu-ray "I love grain" fanatics would be overjoyed.

It's not been a day for good news. I just found out that a friend I used to work discovered her mother's body after the mother had committed suicide. OK, Washingtonians, what is life like in Yakima? And has anyone seen a magazine called Good Fruit Grower? Just saw a job posted for it. Sounds wonderful. But I think I'm too stuck to want to move.

I don't know very much...Yakima is on the east side of the state, and it's practically a different world over there.  From what I've heard, it can be very dry and warm, whereas the west side of the Cascades are greener and cooler (we're much closer to water...Puget Sound and the ocean).

What a coinkydink (sort of)!  Just yesterday during the strike of "Titus," I was talking with the young woman who played the nurse...she was whistling tunes from A Little Night Music...and I eventually told her about the studio recording of ALNM with Sian Phillips as Desiree that used a string quintet (sextet?) as the orchestra and that Sian Phillips also played Madam Armfeldt in the production with Judi Dench as Desiree. :)

OK, Washingtonians, what is life like in Yakima? And has anyone seen a magazine called Good Fruit Grower? Just saw a job posted for it. Sounds wonderful. But I think I'm too stuck to want to move.

Well, the best thing I can say about Yakima (Yaki-Vegas) is that it is less than two horus away from Seattle.  Seriously, it is a small city, large migrant population, basically a farming town.

I am afraid I am not familiar with that magazine; and I was prety sure I had read all of the magazines dealing with the subject of fruit.

Be careful!

I am glad that you made it home safely.  It doesn't sound like you had the greatest time, but, at least, there were some highlights.

I tried to make something out of Edith's husband servicing Anderson Cooper, but apparently Cilla is wise to my devious mind.

Glad you had a great trip. I did a route similar to yours when I was 15. There were five of us crammed into a Volkswagen going through northern Austria and southern Germany, including trips to Neuschwanstein (or however it's spelled). And yes, great beer and sausages and schnitzel.

Frances Farmer's sister Edith lived in Yakima for many years - before she died - but I am not sure that that is a recommendation.

I plan to live in Manhattan while I'm alive, but I'm considering settling in Yakima for my after-life.  Sounds like a perfect place for it.  or maybe Scranton, if Yakima doesn't work out.

Yakima is a nice place to be dead.

Back from storage, eating, and picking up two packages - one from Harvey Schmidt.  I guess for you loyal dear readers i will tell you we're releasing a box set of his albums called Music in a Texas Town - he did four volumes, which he gave as Xmas presents to friends.  It's our first real box set and will have a real box - Harvey's designing all that stuff.  We're also releasing his two film scores, A Texas Romance and Bad Company.

Ooh. Nice. Sounds great.

TOD:

I listen to the podcasts that BK is a guest on, and the Podcasts that DR Ben is a guest one, but that is about it.

I have at times tried to listen to other podcasts, but I always seem to get distracted and end up never hearing the whole thing.

Was Internet Radio part of the TOD? If so, I do listen to internet radio at work (on my own laptop, as we are not allowed to connect to streaming music on work computers...guess it gumms up the works, or something). Raaga.com and RadioTeenTaal.com are the two I listen to the most. Bollywood music, both of them.

I was going to post this on Facebook (and I still might) but I figured I'd post it here first....

What has happened to community theatre?  The joy of auditioning, getting cast, rehearsing, camaraderie, building friendships, everyone coming to the theatre after an 8 hour day job to do something that is a hobby and that you love to do.  The joy of building a set, painting, sewing, playing for fun in the pit, sharing between show dinners, striking the set and then sharing a meal afterward???

Theatre companies in the Bay Area are closing their doors left and right.  Others are struggling to keep them open.  Because what's mentioned above is a lost art in the Bay Area.  Everyone expects to be paid for their time.  Theatre companies gives stipends to their actors for whatever... There is a mentality that actors should be paid for their time, even if it's just $150.  Some amateur actors won't do a show without a stipend.   Look, if you want to be paid, then work hard and earn equity points and perhaps someone will give you an AEA card.  But don't forget, what you did for a hobby, now becomes a job and don't expect to make a living in the Bay Area doing theatre.

What I did for Love... what does that mean anymore?

I went to the Georgia Aquarium--it was quite impressive.  You could really spend the whole day there, but I was there for about 3 hours.  The World of Coca-Cola ( I think that's what it's called) is next door.   I really enjoyed it, even though I haven't had cola in years.  They have free samples of all Coke products, including beverages from all over the world.  I wasn't very brave --I think I only sampled a drink (peach) from France and one from somewhere else in Europe.  I thought I would try Coke and see if I liked any more than I thought I would--I didn't.

My flight Saturday from Washington National Airport had an unscheduled stop at Washington Dulles Airport.  About 20 minutes after takeoff a woman a few rows behind me started yelling for someone to help.  The man next to her was having some kind of seizure or something.  He was making grunting sounds and apparently had to be restrained.  The flight attendant asked if there was a doctor or nurse on board and two nurses went back to help.  A few minutes later a young military guy came to the back of the plane, where the incident occurred, and said he knew the man and would help.  The announcement was made telling the passengers that we were landing at Dulles for a medical emergency.   When we landed the medical personnel boarded and escorted the man off --he seemed to be calm by this time.  We didn't take off for another 30 minutes or more and ended up in Atlanta about 2 hours later than scheduled.  It was an interesting experience to say the least.  I felt sorry for the man- I was wondering if he had some kind of flashback or something (he was in the military too).

My work is done.  We checked the basment. No shut off valve.  Luckily I got the faucet to shut off.  Now I need to call a plumber.  I'll to it tomorrow

VIBES IT WON'T COST MUCH & WILL BE AN EASY FIX!
Thanks.  It's not an emergency.  I also have an electric issue I have put off dealing with for a couple years (outlet and ceiling fan that don't work) so I've scheduled the plumber and the electrician for first thing Monday morning. I'll be getting ready for a hearing, so I can do that at home.    I think the ceiling fan is fixable with a battery or fuse or something, but I have to look that up again.  Otherwise I need to find something else to install and have them take it down.  I like it though....

Sadly they don't.  Sometimes they think they are being kind to those they leave behind.  And sometimes attempts are all about attention.  I finally understood this after my mother's last and almost successful suicide attempt when I was 17.

This is sad.  Vibes the guy will be ok.  I would not have wanted to be on your flight, though 2 hours late isn't bad considering....

I mentioned to Brent that I had gone to the Coca-Cola World and he said that he had done a commercial for them in the early 80s'.  I had gone to the room where they were screening commercials, but didn't stay for the whole presentation, so I'm not sure whether they showed that commercial.  But I found it on youtube:

I don't know why they dubbed his singing voice!

What a sweet commercial.  I don't remember ever seeing it before.

Hello.  I"m back from a quick trip to Atlanta.   I saw Miss Cathy Rigby and Mr. Brent Barrett in Peter Pan.  Let me say that Cathy Rigby is unbelievable--it's amazing how great she is in the role--and has a very pleasing singing voice.  And she's she'll be 60 years old in December!   Brent is really hilarious as Captain Hook and shows off his singing voice in "Captain Hook's Waltz."  The entire cast is terrific.

I'll bet you were surpised, Kevin, when you got to Atlanta nad found out that PETER PAN was playing in town.

Yes, TCB! I was going to see the Aquarium and the tall buildings.  And what are the chances?  The hotel I stayed in, the Georgian Terrace, was directly across the street from the Fox Theatre, where Peter Pan was being performed!

One of the legends of local television news in Seattle, Kathi Goertzen, passed away today.  She  has battled couragiously against brain tumors for the last fourteen years, but each time she fought back and returned to the news desk.  The last few years, she refused to hide from the TV cameras, even though the most recent tumor had distorted her once beautiful face.  She was a news anchor in Seattle for thirty years.  She passed away today at the age of 54.

The show had been talked about so much on HHW, but it just never crossed my mind to check it out until about a two years ago when D.W. Moffett, one of my favorite current day actors, was going to guest star. After that one episode I was hooked.

I had always thought it was some kind of science fiction show! LOL!

Poor Anderson. If he was my boyfriend I would never cheat on him.

Am I the only one that thinks DR MBarnum could easily play the role of Anne in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC?

Is the pay good?

TCB - I see him more as a Petra or a Carl-Magnus. Really, could he really be the right type for virginal, pure Ann in NIGHT MUSIC?
Forgive me, but purity is not necessarily the first thing one would associate with the content of the various Bollywood postings and He-man photographic attachments and and what-not

Glad you had a great trip. I did a route similar to yours when I was 15. There were five of us crammed into a Volkswagen going through northern Austria and southern Germany, including trips to Neuschwanstein (or however it's spelled). And yes, great beer and sausages and schnitzel.

Glad you had a great trip. I did a route similar to yours when I was 15. There were five of us crammed into a Volkswagen going through northern Austria and southern Germany, including trips to Neuschwanstein (or however it's spelled). And yes, great beer and sausages and schnitzel.

You were drinking beer at 15?

Going on 16.  or is that the wrong country?

I drank beer and wine on my first trip to Germany, which was back when I was 7.

A few sips from your parent's glasses?
More than that. And I liked it.

Maybe if my first taste of beer had been good German beer I would like it today instead of disliking it.

Is German beer served cold?  Or room temp.?

DR FJL - When we headed over to "Tinker's Damn" - yes, that's the name of the name of the place - none of us had any idea what were in store for last night. In fact, we almost walked out as soon as we walked in since it was a little too low-key. But then Hayden asked if there was a drag show tonight, and when the bartender said, "Yes", well... And that's when Jimmy, the waiter, unrolled the drapes that formed the "stage". That's also when Jimmy "unrolled" his jeans. And when we told the Hostess that it was Colin's birthday, well... Oh, and there was that free round of drinks. And Joan Jett/Alicia Keys and Britney Spears/Debbie Gibson...

Was Ophelia Thighs there too?

Speaking of AC (the man, not the machine), there are reports (with photos) that his boyfriend has been stepping out on him as he was snapped sucking face with another guy in Central Park.

Forgive me, but purity is not necessarily the first thing one would associate with the content of the various Bollywood postings and He-man photographic attachments and and what-not
How about Frid?

Just had a very nice e-mail from Jonathan Tunick re Follies.
That's great. Did he single any moment out that he was surprised by?

No bit parts for MBarnum.  Featured roles.  We don't want him relocating to new york and having to wind up unable to afford rent and having to camp out on someone's  fire escape or something like that.

I think the fact that he had to pay for the CD may have taken him aback.

(Kidding, that's a joke, that's a joke.)

So was this what we used to call a strip joint?

Like the old Follies in D.C. (or are you too young to remember that, Jose?)

UGH! It looks like someone/something cloned my debit card! However, I just got off the phone with Chase, and they have already "closed" my debit card, and stopped the pending debit charge of $800+ placed at a Wal-Mart in Arkansas. Whew! Gotta love those text alerts!

It's actually just a gay bar that has a drag show on Sunday and Monday nights. At least I think that's what it is.

As for the the Follies in D.C... I remember seeing the ads in the Washington Post and The Blade for the club when I was in middle and high school. I also drove by it a few times, but never went it. I wuz scared.

Hey, the sounds of a Britney Spears/Debbie Gibson left me kinda scared, too.

I only read today's notes because I got confused. The date was Aug 12th. So I kept on refreshing and the date was still August 12. So I decided to go to the archives and that's when I realized the date was wrong.

So I am now caught up.

No, don't talk Britney and Debbie at the same time, John G.

Love Debbie!

It looked severe on the outside, I guess, but inside, it was really quite welcoming and nice, and I recall some of the stripper guys actually wore cool costumes, unlike the NYC same-name equivalent, which really was a strip joint.  (They were of course all "marketing" but if an audience member was in their twenties and looked poor they knew not to try to sell to them so I don't think it'd have been uncomfortable for you at that age, although you might have been bothered by, well, I won't go on)

And Roscoe was there as always to bring on the... oh wait, maybe that's idealizing a little bit...  :)

Well, as Chase promised, the fraudulent charges have already been reimbursed to my account. I can't get a replacement card until I get back to NYC, but, thankfully, I did hit an ATM today to get some cash - and I'm guessing the ATM I used has a skimmer on it. -The fraudulent transaction involved my PIN. At least I'll be spending most of my remaining time here in Palo Alto/San Jose in rehearsal. No real need for a debit card while I'm sitting at the piano. ;)
