Well, you've read the notes, the notes were cherry and had a let, and now it is time for you to post until the Cows-A-Let come home.
-
And the word of the day is: CONCATENATE!
-
FIRST POST!
HUZZAH!!
-
Presentation #2 of Triangle went very well. In fact, I actually had fun tonight. We had a very good rehearsal earlier today, and that truly put everyone at ease for the evening show.
Tomorrow/Friday, we have just a five-hour rehearsal call, and then we'll be attending the evening performance of another production here at TheatreWorks, The Trouble with Doug - which is an adaptation of Kafka's Metamorphosis.

~~~~~HEALTHY RECORDING VIBES FOR DR ELMORE~~~~~
DR vixmom - Glad to read that you made it Canada safe and sound and in First Class! :)
-
And now...
Sleep.
Goodnight.
-
John G - I agree with all you said about "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy." I enjoyed it and it was well cast but the story seemed rushed and was no substitute for the TV series.
-
I am SHOCKED I tell you, SHOCKED to find a missing apostrophe in the notes.
-
I’ve never seen or heard of it before but I was watching the 1956 film "The Beast of Hollow Mountain" starring Guy Madison on the MGM HD channel. It’s a western in which the ranchers are being bothered by a pesky prehistoric dinosaur gobbling up all their cattle. Made in CinemaScope and “Introducing the New Nassour (producer’s name) Regiscope Process, Animation in Depth”. Surprisingly well-made film released by UA. I thought it a bit sad when the beastie got sucked into the quicksand at the end. Might be one of DR MBarnum’s favorites.
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Good morning!
-
Jose, I'm pleased to hear that "Triangle" is going well.
-
Can't wait to hear about "The Trouble With Doug"....
one of my favorites, Bob Stillman, is in the cast, so I'm sure it will be wonderful.
-
Good morning, all! I was asleep by midnight last night, and I slept a good 7.5 hours or so. I have no memory of any dreams.
Last night, except for the bad news about Stephen Rea and Philip O'Reilly, went quite well. Ideally, that all should have happened a night earlier but was foiled by THE BUDGET. Still, the chorus sounds good and they seem to be getting into the spirit of the show. After rehearsal, I went with David Brophy and some of the chorus to a local pub for a Guinness.
Today, at 2pm, a car will take all of us at the Club - Judy the producer, Kim, Annalene, Jim, and me - to the Helix, where we will be recording. Brian Masterson and his crew are setting up the orchestra and equipment this morning. Brian used to own the Windmill Studio where U2 and Bonno recorded. I think he's retired and freelancing now, and he's a really good man.
So, around 3:30, we will rehearse all of the cast's numbers with the orchestra, break, and then rehearse the orchestra. I've got my repair kit, for any emergencies, and I have one fix to make in the bassoon book. Some of the band played for EILEEN last year, but we lost a lot of players because the RTE concert orchestra is out of town with concerts.
So, please, please, please keep those good health vibes for Stephen Rea and Philip O'Reilly coming!
-
Wishing everyone a lovely Friday, and a really nice end of August relaxing weekend.
-
Jason Graae and Faith Prince performing together sounds as if it has the potential for hilarity and laughs galore.
And a very happy birthday to S. Woody White!
Also sending great travel vibes to BK, and wishes for successful and rewarding recording sessions with Sandy.
A quick question for my fellow book lovers...and, of course, being a lurker, I may have missed this discussion.
I walked over to Grafton Street and purchased a pencil sharpener, and I am now ready to face the orchestra. The car will pick us up in 45 minutes.
The tv in my room gets 5 channel: one's showing an Australian soap opera NEIGHBOURS, one's showing Mickey Rooney in something, another's showing MURDER SHE WROTE, which I never liked much, and I forget what's on the other two. I guess I will go back to HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY. I'm over halfway through it.
Thank you, all, for the vibes. Please keep them coming!
-
Never heard of THE BEAST OF HOLLOW MOUNTAIN. Must find it.
Was the 2.35:1 shown at 1.85:1 on MGM-HD? I can't remember if that's one of "those" channels.
-
Thank you DR CHASSMITH - we are sold out tonight, and we had great audience reactions last night....so hoping for another great audience tonight.
We finally got some rain overnight. I never heard it rain or saw rain, but when I woke up in the night, the sidewalk was wet. And still is.
-
Friday morning greetings! The potluck dinner/movie night was a huge success. In addition to the sliced ham & turkey, baked beans, and assorted beverages that I provided, we had:
A veggie tray
2 tossed salads
Hot chicken salad
Broccoli salad
Cheese puff pastries
Sourdough bread & assorted cheeses
Gluten-free multi-grain bread
Peach pie
Peach topped cake
Banana bars with cream cheese icing
Chocolate chip cookies
Macaroons with chocolate on top
Sharon brought a frozen key lime pie that went untouched, so we sent it home with her to keep frozen until next time she hosts book group.
There were 12 (13, with Richard) here to eat and 11 to watch the movie. One person said she didn't want to see the violence, so she left right after dinner. After the movie, some people had second desserts.
Happiest of birthdays to DR SWW!
DR DakotaCelt, we said this to DR Danise when she left for similar reasons. Nobody here cares if you are a downer. Plus I don't find that you've been a downer at all. We love to hear from you. And it will make you feel better to have the support you have here. Don't worry about being a downer!
-
Glad DR Vixmom got upgraded to first class. That must have been fun!
-
My niece and I are both completely obsessed with my yonanas machine (you put frozen fruit in and it comes out like soft ice cream).
Although for some reason she's decided that she only likes banana and peach. And she likes oreo cookies but not chocolate chips (have no idea why).
I've been eating it everyday. And using it probably every 2nd or 3rd day (and freezing some).
It is super easy to clean. I'm just not crazy about too much banana (not crazy about the flavor of just banana even though i do like things like banana muffins). But it's easy to put only 1/2 or 3/4 of a banana in and mix it with other fruits.
I've used frozen strawberries, kiwis, raspberries, blue berries, clementines, cherries, grapes, apples.
And it is super tasty. My mom doesn't think it's sweet enough. But to me it is super tangy. Plus if you put chocolate chips in then it is much sweeter.
I would highly recommend this appliance!
-
Welcome to the world, Vixbaby!
Happy birth, (is it ) vixcousin
Here's a fascinating description of what Sondheim told Jason Robert brown about what you're supposed to say after seeing a friend's show
From wikipedia at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Robert_Brown
When Brown was 23, he and a friend were invited to see a musical by Stephen Sondheim himself. At the show, they sat in front of the New York Times' Frank Rich. They went to dinner, and after twenty minutes, Sondheim asked them what they thought of the show: they both were silent. Brown described the dinner after that moment as "many extremely awkward silences punctuated by bursts of frantic, desperate conversation about anything other than the slaughtered elephant in the room." Brown called mutual friend Daisy Prince the next day, asking if there might be any way to repair the damage after the dinner. She and her family decided that Brown should call Sondheim. Brown paraphrased what Sondheim said:
Nobody cares what you think. Once a creation has been put into the world, you have only one responsibility to its creator: Be supportive. Support is not about showing how clever you are, how observant of some flaw, how incisive in your criticism. There are other people whose job it is to guide the creation, to make it work, to make it live; either they did their job or they didn't. But that is not your problem. If you come to my show and you see me afterward, say only this: "I loved it". It doesn't matter if that's what you really felt. What I need at that moment is to know that you care enough about me and the work I do to tell me that you loved it, not "in spite of its flaws", not "even though everyone else seems to have a problem with it", but simply, plainly, "I loved it." If you can't say that, don't come backstage, don't find me in the lobby, don't lean over the pit to see me. Just go home, and either write me a nice email or don't. Say all the catty, bitchy things you want to your friend, your neighbor, the Internet. Maybe next week, maybe next year, maybe someday down the line, I'll be ready to hear what you have to say, but at that moment, that face-to-face moment after I have unveiled some part of my soul, however small, to you: that is the most vulnerable moment in any artist's life. I beg you, plead with you to tell me what you really thought, what you actually, honestly, totally believed, then you must tell me "I loved it." That moment must be respected."
-
Jennifer, someone brought a Yonanas machine to the office. I can see why the chocolate would not be everyone's favorite. It didn't melt into the banana, so it offered too hard a contrasting texture to the melting banana, at least as far as I was concerned.
My only drawback to the machine, however, is that bananas don't like me, so I don't/can't eat them often.
At work, the person who brought it in had strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and several types of chocolate. I think peach would have been good.
-
Thanks for posting that, FJL. That applies to so many situations in life, and I've tried to tell that to a friend when we go to restaurant openings. It's the same thing. Yet all she wants to do is talk about how she could do it better. Not cool. And not supportive.
-
I am SHOCKED I tell you, SHOCKED to find a missing apostrophe in the notes.
Well, if you found it, it is no longer missing; is it?
Toward the end of the 4th paragraph : "The main score were trying to salvage is truly beloved and iconic"
-
A correction on what's on my CD player. It will definitely be THE STRANGE LOVES OF MARTHA IVERS which arrived in the post today. Thanks, BK! Looking forward to savouring this.
-
Sondheim has done this repeatedly and it's always the same - he asks for your opinion and when you give it to him honestly and should that honest opinion be less than glowing, he never speaks to you again. It happened with Alex Rybeck and it's happened with many others. Lesson learned: Lie. When he asked me what I thought of Road Show, before I even got my mouth open he said, "It sounds like you were disappointed." I then told him I'd enjoyed it, didn't love the production, and thought his score was wonderful. Then all was well.
-
We can all go on with our lives now. A Paul Ryan shirtless photo has been found by TMZ, the press can pursue other stories
"sources close to Paul's abs tell us Ryan has totally transformed his midsection in the past couple of years ...
and now he's totally shredded with a killer 6-pack"
I guess that makes sense about the chocolate chips. But to me it tastes like choc chip ice cream. The chips break into tiny bits. How soft it is I think depends a bit on how defrosted the fruit is. If banana does not agree with you then you can do it banana free. But i find the texture better when you use less than one banana. I do it so I cannot taste the banana but still get the texture I want.
-
Back from a sandwich and no fries. Picked up no packages and an important envelope, did my banking and am now home to find out that three weeks ahead of our anniversary show, we're fifty percent sold. We've warned EVERYONE about making reservations early. I'd imagine we'll be sold out within the next week or so.
-
That Sondheim bit is very interesting. I would think though that there could be a way to be honest yet be very supportive. I could see saying you liked something or enjoyed it no matter what. But why would someone ask your opinion if they do not want it. They should not ask.
-
Danise, you might want to read this one...so many twists and turns....I couldn't put it down!
I will have to check it out.
I was home early today. I don't know if I should post this but you know they moved us out of our building due to RNC. The place they moved us to started getting a really bad smell after lunch (we are above the EAC lab) so Lord only know what we were smelling along the water that was leaking from the wall which I would not doubt is full of mold. I have been nauseated all afternoon. Others were complaining about head aches and their chest feeling tight. At three they told us to go home. I've just been sitting here at home like so much fish, trying to sip some Purified water and hoping i can keep it down. It's been about an hour and I am only just starting to feel good again.
I don't know what will happen on Monday. We can't go back into that smell, whatever it is. If I have to take vacation/sick time (which I don't think is fair) I am not going to put myself in an environment that is going to make me sick.
-
DR George, I'm on hold with the president of PayPal. As soon as we're done I'll transfer him over to you.
I'm patting myself on the back, but the orchestrations for DEAREST ENEMY are really, really good, and the orchestra plays them beautifully. Everyone is very happy and excited, and almost everyone has the same question: how did such a delightdul score get set aside for so long?
WE got a healthy Philip O'Reilly back today, so that was good. The verdict on Stephen Rea is still out, so please keep those vibes coming. We need him well.
So, it's midnight here, and I'm off to bed. I'll catch up with you tomorrow.
Watching the Carol Channing documentary. I doubt you'll need to see it, BK. I heard her twice in press conferences on two different Dolly tours. She's still telling the same stories.
It is nice to see Jerry Herman, though.
DR ChasSmith - Are you recording the daily concert podcasts from Tanglewood in conjunction with their anniversary season?
Only a couple of things. Captured "Gurrelieder" in the nick of time the other night, but the dropouts were frustrating. Got it, though, and that inspired me to go to their regular shopping section and try a downloaded FLAC file on the Gershwin. Sounds great on my regular system, so I will definitely grab some others.
Hi from Walt Disney's All Star Music Resort. My room is quiet and adequate and for the first time, Disney has free wifi in the room. It's about time. I landed at 10:30am and hit the ground running. Checked in to the resort and went to meet my pals. What a day we had!! Never stopped. Now I believe it will be a cold shower, then into bed with a book which will last I think about 5 minutes.
-
Page five? Can you dig it?
-
One last comment about the Carol Channing doc. Toward the end, the director interviews people who showed up for an autograph session. One of them is Miles Kreuger, who might have had something interesting to say about her role or her place in musical theater history, but the director didn't have a clue who he was and just included a nothing quote from him about having seen her in "Lend an Ear." And it doesn't identify him.
There are other people whose job it is to guide the creation, to make it work, to make it live; either they did their job or they didn't. But that is not your problem. If you come to my show and you see me afterward, say only this: "I loved it". It doesn't matter if that's what you really felt. What I need at that moment is to know that you care enough about me and the work I do to tell me that you loved it, not "in spite of its flaws", not "even though everyone else seems to have a problem with it", but simply, plainly, "I loved it." If you can't say that, don't come backstage, don't find me in the lobby, don't lean over the pit to see me. Just go home, and either write me a nice email or don't. Say all the catty, bitchy things you want to your friend, your neighbor, the Internet. Maybe next week, maybe next year, maybe someday down the line, I'll be ready to hear what you have to say, but at that moment, that face-to-face moment after I have unveiled some part of my soul, however small, to you: that is the most vulnerable moment in any artist's life. I beg you, plead with you to tell me what you really thought, what you actually, honestly, totally believed, then you must tell me "I loved it." That moment must be respected."
Wow!
On the one hand, I totally agree with him and certainly know where he's coming from.
On the other hand, if he doesn't want an honest response, he shouldn't ask.
Actor Keenan Wynn had a way of sidestepping this kind of awkward moment.
If he didn't like a picture, and he had to confront the filmmaker or one of the actors (who might be friends) when it had finished, he'd go up to them, smile, give them a light punch on the shoulder and say, "Son of a bitch". It worked every time.
I'm patting myself on the back, but the orchestrations for DEAREST ENEMY are really, really good, and the orchestra plays them beautifully. Everyone is very happy and excited, and almost everyone has the same question: how did such a delightdul score get set aside for so long?
WE got a healthy Philip O'Reilly back today, so that was good. The verdict on Stephen Rea is still out, so please keep those vibes coming. We need him well.
So, it's midnight here, and I'm off to bed. I'll catch up with you tomorrow.
I'm sorry. I must have missed this.
What's wrong with Stephen Rea?
-
Just in from having a triple chocolate bourbon bacon brownie. I shouldn't have, but it called me.
What did it call you?
Sucker.
a nothing quote from him about having seen her in "Lend an Ear." And it doesn't identify him.
Mike Tyson expressed interest in this property as well.
LOL.
Good morning, all! I was asleep by midnight last night, and I slept a good 7.5 hours or so. I have no memory of any dreams.
Last night, except for the bad news about Stephen Rea and Philip O'Reilly, went quite well. Ideally, that all should have happened a night earlier but was foiled by THE BUDGET. Still, the chorus sounds good and they seem to be getting into the spirit of the show. After rehearsal, I went with David Brophy and some of the chorus to a local pub for a Guinness.
Today, at 2pm, a car will take all of us at the Club - Judy the producer, Kim, Annalene, Jim, and me - to the Helix, where we will be recording. Brian Masterson and his crew are setting up the orchestra and equipment this morning. Brian used to own the Windmill Studio where U2 and Bonno recorded. I think he's retired and freelancing now, and he's a really good man.
So, around 3:30, we will rehearse all of the cast's numbers with the orchestra, break, and then rehearse the orchestra. I've got my repair kit, for any emergencies, and I have one fix to make in the bassoon book. Some of the band played for EILEEN last year, but we lost a lot of players because the RTE concert orchestra is out of town with concerts.
So, please, please, please keep those good health vibes for Stephen Rea and Philip O'Reilly coming!
The Chieftains have recorded there also. I believe Brian Masterson has produced several of their albums with Paddy Moloney..
Have a fun and safe visit to fair city of Dublin / Baille Atha Cliath
Enjoy Canada Vixmom!
-
Happy Birthday SWWoody!
-
I walked over to Grafton Street and purchased a pencil sharpener, and I am now ready to face the orchestra. The car will pick us up in 45 minutes.
The tv in my room gets 5 channel: one's showing an Australian soap opera NEIGHBOURS, one's showing Mickey Rooney in something, another's showing MURDER SHE WROTE, which I never liked much, and I forget what's on the other two. I guess I will go back to HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY. I'm over halfway through it.
Thank you, all, for the vibes. Please keep them coming!
I have seen Neigbors before..
Murder She wrote is popular in Ireland
Enjoy and good luck!
DR DakotaCelt, we said this to DR Danise when she left for similar reasons. Nobody here cares if you are a downer. Plus I don't find that you've been a downer at all. We love to hear from you. And it will make you feel better to have the support you have here. Don't worry about being a downer!
thanks :-)
A quick question for my fellow book lovers...and, of course, being a lurker, I may have missed this discussion.
Did anyone read GONE GIRL by Gillian Flynn over the summer months?
Wow...talk about a book that messes with your head.....
I haven't read it, but not sure I'm really needing anything more to mess with my head, lol
If you're wondering where i've been....according to the SC Journal I've been in the "eye of the storm" Hope I didn't post this when I found it last night and then forget that I posted it, LOL
How many people did you see?
Well at the time of the interview, she asked the same question and I said I didn't have a number. That's because as of the interview it was two. Truthfully, I didn't start scheduling DACA (deferred action for childhood arrivals) until Wednesday when the forms and final instructions were published. I had 8 since then and have a bunch scheduled for the next two weeks. I'm not doing the massive fast clinic style set up. There are too many issues that can cause problems. There isn't a lot of trust in this administration, they have deported more people than any administration in history and to get this you have to give them all the info they need to deport you and then swear it's true. So, you have to be very careful what you say and to do a real risk/benefit analysis
Is this the cousin whose wedding The Vixter was in? Congratulations to the parents and welcome to the world, Baby Boy!
It is! In fact yesterday was Vixeldestcousin's 4th wedding anniversary - this visit we finally were able to meet her first son, who just turned 2 in March, tomorrow we will celebrate Vixgranny & Vixgrandad's 60th wedding anniversary (the celebration is actually a bit early the true date is August 30th but Vixter starts college on the 27th so we had to be back home)
Glad you're having a good time, Vixmom!
Here's a fascinating description of what Sondheim told Jason Robert brown about what you're supposed to say after seeing a friend's show
From wikipedia at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Robert_Brown
When Brown was 23, he and a friend were invited to see a musical by Stephen Sondheim himself. At the show, they sat in front of the New York Times' Frank Rich. They went to dinner, and after twenty minutes, Sondheim asked them what they thought of the show: they both were silent. Brown described the dinner after that moment as "many extremely awkward silences punctuated by bursts of frantic, desperate conversation about anything other than the slaughtered elephant in the room." Brown called mutual friend Daisy Prince the next day, asking if there might be any way to repair the damage after the dinner. She and her family decided that Brown should call Sondheim. Brown paraphrased what Sondheim said:
Nobody cares what you think. Once a creation has been put into the world, you have only one responsibility to its creator: Be supportive. Support is not about showing how clever you are, how observant of some flaw, how incisive in your criticism. There are other people whose job it is to guide the creation, to make it work, to make it live; either they did their job or they didn't. But that is not your problem. If you come to my show and you see me afterward, say only this: "I loved it". It doesn't matter if that's what you really felt. What I need at that moment is to know that you care enough about me and the work I do to tell me that you loved it, not "in spite of its flaws", not "even though everyone else seems to have a problem with it", but simply, plainly, "I loved it." If you can't say that, don't come backstage, don't find me in the lobby, don't lean over the pit to see me. Just go home, and either write me a nice email or don't. Say all the catty, bitchy things you want to your friend, your neighbor, the Internet. Maybe next week, maybe next year, maybe someday down the line, I'll be ready to hear what you have to say, but at that moment, that face-to-face moment after I have unveiled some part of my soul, however small, to you: that is the most vulnerable moment in any artist's life. And yet, druxy, that's the kind of cleverness Sondheim is saying is fine when the people are NOT your friends. He's saying when they're your friends and it's your friend's show you just saw, the product of your FRIEN's soul you just saw and who needs your support, that's when this rule applies - at least that's how I read it.
WHEN IT'S YOUYR FRIEND SPECIFICALLY WHO NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT, EVEN IF HE ASKS WHAT YOU THINK, YOU LIE AT THAT MOMENT - That's when you SPECIFICALLY DON'T do the clever lines lines "Son of a bitch" or "You should have seen yourself" or "I can;t tell you how good you were" or "Whatever they're paying you it's not enough" or "You've done it again" or "You, you, you" -
but I'm pretty sure it only applies to a friend, if I'm reading it correctly.
Obviously, when you do that "clever" sort of thing like "son of a bitch" , everybody knows you hated the show! :)
I answered it a long time ago.
Oh really?
Oh, NOW it shows up. Perhaps you'd like to answer the e-mail I JUST sent. :)
I love answering your email. Nothing brightens my day like an email from you, unless it's after midnight in which case it illuminates the darkness. or something like that.
Maybe I can get a job writing greeting cards.
I had a can of Rosarita refried beans as my evening snack - 300 calories total - put some onions and taco sauce in with a sprinkling of cheese. It's, as you might imagine, very filling but no fat and only 300 calories on top of the 800 I ate during the day. Definitely should lose a pound or so from this day.
The Trouble with Doug was quite an interesting piece - and I mean that in a good way. Some very beautiful and effortlessly complex music which was sung very well by a great cast, and played very well by Vadim Feichtner (a.k.a. the future Mr. Leslie Kritzer ;) ) It was a very "smart" score that doesn't overtly wear it's smartness on its sleeve.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DR SWOODY WHITE!!!!!
-
Still on Page Six, huh?
::)
-
And...
Tomorrow, we will have one final short rehearsal before our final presentation tomorrow night. In other words, I get to sleep in. Although, after discovering the diner down the street this morning - Bill of Fare - I may go ahead and wake up "early" in order to have breakfast there again. ;)
Goodnight.
