Well, you've read the notes, the notes were very New York, and now it is time for you to post until the New York cows come home.

Good Evening!

The final performance/presentation of Triangle went very well. In fact, the audience was so into it, that they did not applaud at the end of the first act until the house lights came back up signaling the start of intermission. -And, yes, that was a good thing. I guess. ::)

One very cool thing happened after the show...

Our director was talking with one of her favorite audience members. It turned out that the audience member's grandmother worked at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory. -Triangle deals with the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. Well... Her grandmother had called in sick the day of the fire! The woman had no idea that Triangle was about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, and, apparently, spent most of the show in a sort of state of emotional shock. -In a good way. She loved the show.

In other news...

All I have left to pack up in the morning is my MacBook and toiletries. We don't fly back until 3:20pm, and the shuttle is scheduled to pick us up around 12:30pm to take us to SFO. It will be nice to have a bit of time in the morning to finish packing and get some breakfast.

There is one CD of John Addison's film music coming up on Amazon. It only includes the main theme from "Centennial".

bk did release Addison's soundtrack for "Tom Jones". Maybe he has some tracks from "Centennial" in his closet. ;)

Good morning, all! I have had a lovely breakfast, and I may take a walk in St Stephens Green before we head to the Helix to begin the first day of recording.

Yesterday, the cast and orchestra continued through the score and the chorus joined us after the dinner break. I think they are having fun; the ladies get to sing in funnyt voices and sing as though they are angry, the men get to be pompous and sing like drunken morons, and I've got our porducer laughing in the studio at some of the things they are pulling. I am sure, knowing their contractor, that they assumed it would be an easy "sing  classical" oratorio performance, and here they are acting very silly instead.

The orchestra plays beautifully, and they seem to like the adventure. The cast is really wonderful. Our veteran is my old dear friend Kim Criswell, and she and the cast are having a great time. When Philip O'Reilly, who plays the moron and comic relief General Tryon, said to me that he's having a great time, although he usually sings Bach and Haydn, we both agreed there were to few comedy numbers in the ST MATTHEW PASSION.

We are also recording, for the first time ever, a cut Rodgers & Hart song, "The Pipes of Pansy," which is adorable, and it's sung very seductively by Hal Cazalet and Rachel Kelly as the secondary couple.

So, today Mr Stephen Rea will come in and we will run his scene at the piano before we put him and the cast in front of the orchestra. I am very excited that it's going so well. Keep them vibes coming!

It was so difficult to sleep last night because of the heat, added to which, because it was hot and a Saturday night, there was constant noise from people and cars in the streets. It's going to be even hotter today.

Not sure how I feel about that 5-year theory, Doug, especially about papers and documents.  They do have a way of becoming needed out of nowhere. Case in point what I'm seeing right now.

I found with my current ugly "cyber-follower" situation, i remain so grateful to have the fact that I knew the main instigator 25 years ago well-documented in his own handwriting, which was only because I hadn't thrown out his writings, which were clearly dated from way back then -

And I will add of course, having the same thing stored on a disc or a drive would have been 100% as good, and I'm planning to take this paper - once i've whittled down the closed storage bin  to the indispensable stuff - and do that, even in part because if it's valuable enough to keep anyway, am i not better off having it on disc rather than subject to loss?

Good morning, all.

The feline contingent let me sleep in a bit this morning, a blessing.  It just happens that our latest heat wave broke for the weekend (providing BK with what I believe is perfect weather for the city), and the air and light this morning as I gradually cleared my brain of dreams were actually very California-like.

I was up to read the notes last night but too wiped out by then to post.

Kritzer Time was incredible, and of course an overwhelming event that happens near the end (I just KNEW something was coming, damn it) was pretty overwhelming, but what a rewarding journey.  Doesn't there need to be, like, uh, one more book?    :)

The director told me on Thursday that in spite of what the schedule says - we will be rehearsing the acts as follows on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday:
3, 1, 2

Two cast members told me we are doing: 2, 1, 3.

So I am not exactly sure of what we are doing tomorrow.....so I suppose I will find out.  He is always about three days late answering emails....so if I ask him today....I won't get an answer until it's TOO LATE.

The background music in Centennial complimented the main theme by taking an element from it and creating a thread for the main characters or story points. Very well done.

The quality of music for film and television can make or break what we see  onscreen. I have seen some television shows that have had fairly good background composition, and in some cases, almost cinema quality. During the 1980s and 1990s some of the soaps even had decent background music. The music can enhance the action we view onscreen and create a bridge for story direction and acting.

With that being said, I have also seen some films and shows with horrid music. IN those cases I am not sure if it is the selection of the piece, execution in relation to the scene, or the lack of understanding how all the pieces work.

The marriage of music, story, and acting works with Centennial and you are drawn into the action.

and the good lord only knows how many times I have read the book.

EVen though The Far Pavillions was not a huge success, it does have some interesting pieces. I do have that album.

Marty Davich did music for Days of our Lives and General Hospital during the 80s and 90s and it helped to make the stories much more compelling. Paul Glass did the music for One Life to live and General Hospital. I have not been really thrilled with his work on GH but I did not mind Glass' work on OLTL. David Nichtern was hit and miss.

David Nichtern did have one piece that still resonates with fans called Song without End. ABC did have it available for a very short time for download after The Chieftains appeared on the show in 1996.

Example of Marty Davich's work from 1980s. Apparently Corday Productions released a cassette with some of the music from Days.

I have to say that they really take care of you at this hotel.  When I called and said the initial room was just too small for me and that the East Coast Singer had, on my two previous trips, had put me in one of the premium rooms, she switched me without any fuss at all.  And that's why I love this hotel.  I'm now in a great room with room to move.  I've already been to Duane Reade for toothpaste and stuff, and also six bags of chocolate Twizzler's to send home.

I have a new close personal friend: Mr Stephen Rea, who is not only a wonderful actor but an absolute charmer. He was easy to work with and very very wonderful to everyone. If I sound like DR MBarnum behaving like a 14 year-old girl with a huge crush, it's because that's exactly how I feel at the moment. What a great way to begin today's recording!

Everything went smoothly, but we are one song behind at the moment. We will catch up. The afternoon session was to do all of the ladies' chorus numbers and work with the full chorus in the evening. Tomorrow afternoon, we have the men's chorus and then full chorus tomorrow night.

And so to bed.

I just took a tray of port brownies with pine nuts out of the oven. And, argh!, I won't be able to eat any.

I made them to try a recipe for brownie bread pudding, and you need stale brownies for it. So, that will have to wait a few days. In the meantime, the house smells of chocolate and port. And it's off limits.

I should have made two batches.

I, too, have been trying to get rid of clutter. It piles up sooo quickly!

I agree with FJL, though, that there are some documents that need to be kept quite a long time. Fred, remember that although discs are more durable software changes and sometimes "destroys" the data.

Was there a CD of the London production of HIGH SOCIETY with Natasha Richardson? If so, and if any DR has a copy, can they burn one for me?

A video from that High Society with Mr. Rea as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWlTjw6fVfg

The sound is lousy, though.

Amazon says a cassette of the cast is available, no CD.

DR Elmore - I'm so happy to read that your recording sessions are going so well. Be sure to carry back some of that "good recording karma" with you back across the Atlantic.

In the meantime, I am soooo digging Virgin America's in-flight music system. You can tune into set radio stations or compose a playlist of your own from various offerings. Right now, I'm listening to Ashkenazy play Rachmaninov, and Lang Lang play Chopin.

Jose, how do you like Virgin America Airlines in other respects? Any better than other airlines?

I believe Vixfamily is flying Air Canada, an airline I like.

DR Jeanne - I like Virgin America, however, I think I prefer the seats on JetBlue.

I don't have a real preference of one airline over another. I've been very fortunate that I've only ever had one truly bad travel experience. Airlines have their good days and bad days. Airline employees have their good days and bad days. I tend have very good experiences with the airlines that most people seem to have bad experiences with - or at least vocalize their displeasure.

I tend to stick to JetBlue, Delta and United, but that's mainly for frequent flyer miles. Since i don't fly that much "for pleasure", most of my flights are usually arranged by a company I'm working for, and those tend to be the most frequently used airlines. There was a time when I flew American and USAirways regularly, but it's been a couple of years since I've flown either one.

*However, it does look like I'll be on Qantas again come January. ;)

Part Deux

DR Jeanne - The one factor that seems to play the most part in whether one has a good of bad flight experience is the Airport. As much as I like the convenience of La Guardia, some of the terminals there are truly in need of some sprucing up. The construction at BWI right now makes that place a total headache from curb to gate. The new train system at Dulles is a dream! Etc., etc., etc.

I was kind of surprised at the Virgin America gates at JFK. I had expected them to be bit more brighter and cheerier - more in line with Virgin America's aesthetic. However, the Virgina America terminal at SFO - Wow! Great places to eat, well laid out, a short walk from the TSA screening area to the gates. Even though ATL seems to get knocked around regularly, the layout of the airport is more traveler-friendly than one would think. And I still love connecting through Charlotte if there's enough time to sit in one of the rocking chairs. :)

Sorry, no pictures, but a good time was had by all!

I just returned from the party. It was small but festive. Fred, Anthony, Bruce, Chas, me and Holly, who has worked with Bruce in one of his Kritzerland shows. She just moved to NY so she joined us for dinner.

Bruce very graciously picked up the tab for the group. Thanks my Friend!

We talked and talked and laughed a lot but it will just be in our memories since, as I said, no pictures were taken.

In other news...

I'm due to land at JFK aroun 11:30pm EDT.

I have auditions for MY FAIR LADY at 10:00am EDT tomorrow/Monday morning.

My body will most likely still be on PDT.

In other words, there is a good chance I won't post once I've landed since I really must get some sleep tonight. But that could always change. ;)

Back from dinner. Restaurant Week will not be good on waist line or wallet.

But excellent meal of achiote-glazed quail, beef tenderloin yakitori (though I disliked and avoided the honey dipping sauce), herb-crusted pork tenderloin with mushrooms and mixed vegetables, and a dessert of mixed  berries with cream. A friend had rack of lamb and a crab cake (in reverse order). An excellent bottle of cab and a good time was had by all.
