Since I didn't get much done on my house this summer, and since I've never gotten the ceiling fan in my kitchen fixed, I decided to finally replace some of the light fixtures in my house.  I haven't changed any since I've moved in.  None of them are original.  Anyway, I picked some out and got them this morning.  I didn't like one of them so I took it back and found something I really liked....then I got home and realized another wouldn't work out...so back to the store.  Since the electrician is coming at 8AM it isn't like I had time to waste.   I have been shopping around but....anyway. I do think this new one will work.   If not, I'll be returning it in the morning and may just have to hook up one of them myself.

Tomorrow at 8:00 the plumber is coming too.  The outside faucet doesn't like to shut off once you open it.  So I'm going to get that fixed too.  I do have a couple things I can work on at home for the office.  I should have done them this weekend, but just couldn't get myself to do it.

TOD:

Definitely the 2 week trip Sandy (before we were married) and I took to the UK in 1996.

We spent 3-4 days in London, then took a bus tour North to Scotland and back down to London.

Favorite parts of the trip for me were the "Jack the Ripper Walking Tour" in London and Edinburgh Castle, both of which inspired later stories and/or screenplays.

While we wait for the danged thing to work, I will say that Metro North got me back to the exurbs safely and soundly and I am enjoying the home fires.  Without the fires.  It was a superbly pleasant evening in the company of BK, FJL, Ben, Ant, and Holly.  A few of us had the Best Banana Cream Pie Ever.  And no one had to take the Seat of Shame.

I was in Seattle all day yesterday Saturday with my niece and my sister's boyfriend.  We went to a Seattle Storm women's basketball game.  It was Lauren Jackson Bobblehead night and I got one!  However, Lauren Jackson wasn't even playing that night.  I don't know where she was, but she and Sue Bird (they're the two best players of the team and two of the best players in the entire WNBA) and one other player weren't there.  The Storm lost. :-\ Anyway, here's a stock photo of the bobblehead:

Today Yesterday, my sister and I went shopping for stuff to make a raffle basket.  On Saturday, August 25, Theater Artists Olympia is having a fundraiser:  Get A Heart On for TAO (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/264754)! ;)

We got items for barbecuing...a tablecloth; paper napkins, plates and silverware; barbecue tongs, spatula, fork and metal brush scraper; barbecue flavor spices, etc.  I've been told that there will be seven or eight baskets to raffle.  My sister made one (or maybe two) for the fundraiser last year, and I think that hers had one of the highest winning bids!  We'll see how much this one goes for.

Good morning, all! I have returned from breakfast. Irish eggs and butter are so much more deelish than New York examples! And the coffee! Don't get me started.

Yesterday, we recorded the Finale with Stephen Rea as General George Washington and Karl Harpur as his envoy. Following that we did all of the ladies' chorus numbers - HeighHo Lackaday, War Is War, I'd Like To Hide It, and Old Enough To Love - before dinner break. Then the men joined the group and we dashed through several more numbers, including "I Beg Your Pardon," the gavotte and wonderful "Where The Hudson River Flows." We also did Annalene's reprise of "Bye and Bye," which is really heartbreaking. We finished with the first take of Hal and Rachel's "The Pipes of Pansy," an unrecorded Rodgers & Hart song that was tossed out of around four shows on the road. It's a real charmer, and I'm not sure why it was ever cut from anything. We're using the original Roy Webb orchestration from PEGGY-ANN.

Today, we begin with Rachel and Hal, go on to the men's chorus numbers  - Cheerio!, Yankee Doodle, and God knows what else! - along with Kim and Philip's "The Hermits" and maybe "Here In My Arms." After dinner, the ladies will join us and we'll finish up the choral pieces. Tomorrow we finish up the the romantic duets and record the orchestra sections.

BK, I hope all goes smoothly with your recording. Tell Lanny, Alet, and Andy I send my love. I am sorry I missed you all last night. It would have been fun. I hope you will get a chance to see ONCE. Andy is wonderful in it.

DR vixmom, I think the name Declan is quite lovely.

I almost forgot to add:

Today is my traveling day back to Montreal. Since it leaves around Montreal rush hour I will be at the airport around 2.5 hours ahead of time.

Partly to want to get through custom and immigration and security quickly and so that my Mother who is driving me does not get caught in traffic returning home.

When I arrived it took over two hours to drive about 4 miles!! and then another hour to get through similar traffic and then the drive home which took another 30 minutes.

On non traffic days it can take 20 minutes to get there!!!

Montreal only has a short window to do road repairs and they are constantly doing them because of previous shoddy work and the salt they use on the roads during the winters.

TOD: Do I have to choose?

I will never forget dancing the samba on the streets of Brazil during Carnival or hang gliding off the side of a mountain.

I loved the pomp and solemnity of the Holy Week parades through Antigua, Guatemala, plus the physical agony of dragging my out-of-shape body up the side of a 10,000-foot volcano.

Going on safari in the Okavango Delta in Africa is still unbelievable, as are the memories of seeing everything from cheetahs running wild to a lady leopard up a tree.

This recent trip to Italy was as relaxing a week as I could have wished, and I was happy to spend with six good friends.

The cruises on the clipper ship, the Victory Chimes, off the coast of Maine are right up there. So was going to Ireland to take part in a dance contest and then drive around the island.

And it doesn't have to be out of state, even. I remember a wonderful trip to Big Bend National Park with my friend, Hillary. The beauty of the area was breathtaking, even after I got the car stuck in a mud puddle in the middle of a desert. I was left there in the 95-degree heat reading "Barnaby Rudge" while she went off to get help.

Then there were the trips to Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Chile, Hawaii and, of course, all the trips to Germany to visit family.

TOD:

It would have to be one of the many theatre trips to London that The Lovely Wife and I have been taking over the years since 1994, almost yearly, where we see ten to twelve shows.  We both know the city very well by now, and go and just live in a holiday flat with a kitchenette.  The flight over is always nice too, because I will not fly overseas in coach.  We usually fly business and nothing less than premium economy, which has wider seats and lots of the perks of business.  Perhaps the best trip was the one where we flew shortly after  9/11 and got bumped to upper (first) class on Virgin Atlantic.  Flying in style.  And, of course, we're seeing the greatest theatre in the world and brilliant actors.  I've seen close to 150 plays now in London.

But my favourite trip to London may have been my first one when I was going over as the writer of my first two films, HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES and THE SIGN OF FOUR, to see them filmed with Ian Richardson as Holmes.  I stayed for three months, the first month in a great boutique posh hotel, The Duke's, off Picadilly and only a stone's throw from St. James Park and Buckingham Palace.  Then I was moved to a high-rise flat right down the street from Westminister and the Houses of Parliament.  From my window, I could watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace.  A chauffeured car picked me up every monring to take me to the studio and then back at night.  I had three months to explore and get to know the city like the back of my hand.  It is the greatest city in the world.  I never tire of it and it's really the only place The Lovely Wife and I ever want to travel to.

I did enjoy MY trip to Ireland back in 1989.......we stayed in Dundalk for a theatre festival that we were entered in.....

We went through Dublin on the way......then Sabian and I took a side trip to Belfast to visit one of her relatives.....the train ride was nice....Belfast was sort of scary.....there were a LOT of rules to follow.....

Then we spent half a day, a night, and another half day in London.....which was fascinating......we tried to see so many things....and we took a tour of the National Theatre and saw LETTICE AND LOVAGE with Maggie Smith, which was of course very nteresting.

The intermission was also quite British, as the little ladies came around with tea carts.

My favorite trip was to Boston...

I spent five days with friends and we explored the city. It was a great time and we visited the Kennedy Library, Freedom Trail, Fanueil Hall, Salem, Peabody-Essex museum and The Constitution.

One of the highlights was going to L Street Pub and we sat in one of the booths that Matt Damon and Robin Williams sat in when they filmed "Good Will Hunting"

I even experienced a Nor'easter. I found it highly entertaining that after a person cleaned their spot, items were hauled into the cleaned parking spot to protect it from others. Anything and everything was used including high chairs, couches, chairs of all sorts, and garbage cans..

It'll be marked down at Costco about two weeks after it's released. Even Costco is scaling back the DVDs/Blue and Rays that it's selling. Rather depressing.

Please send vibes that Ann Miner and Mike reynolds of All That Chat decide to reveal the identity of the person they are inexplicably protecting who thought it would be cute to post a taunting lyric saying "I really hope you die" yet claims in another post taht he's a friedn of Skip and mine, yet won't identify himself.  It's just extremely creepy, and All that Chat just doesn't get why this is disturbing.

I'm putting the complete post here.  The person in another post says "I'm someone you've dined with and consider a friend' but knows I'm upset by this and won't come forward to reassure me, some "friend" that is!  that leads me to believe it really is someone menacing who is pulling the wool over ATC's eyes and Ann and Mike just really want to believe it because they want to be hurtful.

Here's the post with the violent lyric.  It feels creepy in light of the other incidents such as the "Fred Landu is Dead" newspaper links, and those strange "stalks"  on the Times comments.

Brooklyn Boy, you've changed the subject yet again (not that there's anything wrong with that). Before addressing your new topic, I'd like to "like" Chromolume's peeve --

contemporary lyricists (or composer/lyricists like Brown) - again, so many of today's composers are influenced by contemporary pop, and the dense, overwritten lyric style of rap, and what I'd call "rant" songs ("One Week" being a good example) that this is seemingly all they know how to write - so we have these long overwritten marathons by the likes of Brown, Kerrigan/Lowdermilk, Gealt, etc, which tend, to me, all to become "more is less" songs. No one these days trusts the economy of, say, the lyric to a Hammerstein ballad, where often there is ONLY ONE REFRAIN to listen to, digest, and embrace - and in general, that kind of economy of writing can very easily be "less is more" - with the words NOT being sung just as important as the ones that are. But these days, a good number of lyricists feel they need to just vomit out all the subtext and everything else into one huge-ass song. And for me, that's often a tedious, masturbatory, wholly unsatisfying thing to listen to.

-- "They pack their lyrics 'til they're so damn dense, you could put 'em in your yard and you could use 'em for a fence." These songs/writers are extremely popular among performers under a certain age, and that has nothing to do with who is or isn't winning awards. Take for example: the Pasek and Paul song called In Short, which is really anything but. It includes these charming lines:

I wanna stick pins your eyes
I pray you get a rectal rash
I hope your Visa’s declined
Your children are blind
Get broke and have to do porn for cash
Become epileptic and violently shake
Find out that you were conceived by mistake
Fall out of a roller coaster
Take a warm bath with a plugged in toaster
In short
I really hope you die

but the real problem is that the song goes on and on, making the same point, which never develops, all at a thousand words per minute, never giving the ear a chance to rest, devoid of subtext. Listen to it back to back with Hammerstein's The Gentlemen Is a Dope for fun.

There's also Miller & Tyson's Spring Cleaning, Brown's Hopalong Heartbreak, plus countless other epics with countless words and notes. But when Chromolume says no one today is writing with economy, leaving things unsaid - well, it sounds like he's unaware of the better songsmiths of our day, such as the fine and diverse group who've won the Ebb award.

it just has no place directed as a real person in  a creepy, hostile, inappropriate post by an anonynous stranger.

John G - That's the strange thing.  I'd like to think that even just from their own financial liability point of view, Ann and Mike wouldn't be utterly, ridiculously stupid enough to leave me that physically vulnerable to someone dangerous who might actually be someone who is a real friend who we might see as a friend or neighbor here in our very building, who might actually be that sick or obsessed or deranged.

But to be honest, the two of them have not thought too rationally about lots of things, so maybe they don't think things through, like the way they handled leaving up the identity of that statutory rape victim for all those days while thousands and thousands of people saw the name, until they finally said "Huh, you think maybe we should have taken that down under the shield law?" "I dunno, Mike, you think we should have?" "I dunno, Ann, whaddayou think?" like dumbos futzing around with people's lives from Wexford PA and who knows where in MikeReynoldsLand.

Wonderful reminiscence Charles. Thank you. I really enjoyed those Holmes films.

Today went well. We have two duets to record, "Bye and Bye" and "Here's A Kiss," both with the two romantic leads, and we'll do them tomorrow. We have two sessions to record them, the Overture, Entr'Acte, Bow, and Exit Music and we are finished. I got all teary saying goodbye to the cast and chorus this evening.

DR JohnG, I'm happy your friend is okay. I'm sorry I missed sending her vibes.

DR Dakotacelt, I bought a book on the Book of Kells last year when I was here. I hear thye lines to see the pages the College elects to show the public is long, and I have no patience and too much to do in my brief time here. Still, I might get to it one of these days.

DR FJL, the whole situation is creepy and I think your curiosity and anger are probably delighting whomever this oaf may be. There's someone who claims to be an acquaintance of mine pulling something similar. I want to know who it is so I can give him a tonsillectomy with my bare hands, but I refuse to obsess about this ass. At some point I'll find out and kill the sonofabitch. Until then, I don't need to think about it.

One of the two best trips that I ever took was when my sister, my niece and I went to London.  It was shortly after 9/11, also...we went in December, 2001.  We saw Starlight Express (before it closed in January 2002); Kiss Me Kate with Brent Barrett and Marin Mazzie; and the first two acts of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Brendan Fraser, Frances O'Connor and Ned Beatty.  We had to leave early because of the main reason we went to London:  to see a group called Steps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steps_(group)).  My niece LOVED them (at the time) and we went to two performances of what turned out to be their very last tour just before they broke up.  I think that at one of the two concerts that we saw (the same concert on two different nights) two members of the group turned in their resignations literally just minutes before going on stage to perform.  The other three members (and their management, I'm sure) were blindsided.

The other best trip was in December 1995 when I went to New York City. :D

I don't care if the stalker oaf is who's been trailing me since Feb 2011 who goes by "vic" is delighted and is the person who's been identified by ATC in their earlier letter.  If the "vic" guy is who I think he is, the lawyer Jeffrey L. Brooks of Brooklyn, , he's certainly reading here, he has a nice job as a lawyer for GMHC, he has significant assets in Brooklyn, and I will in all likelihood do quite well financially in a case against him.

But Ann and Mike seem very sure that this "B_Rabbit" is NOT this "vic" after all, so much so that they've staked quite a lot on it..  B_Rabbit seems to have adopted vic's methodology point for point in a copycat way, but if Ann and Mike are so convinced that they actually called me a liar for saying he's vic, then my immediate concern is to be assured that I'm in no danger from someone who has said "I'm someone you've dined with and consider a friend" - which suggests it's a person I'm around all the time, on a day to day basis,  but is taking delight in making me uncomfortable and threatened physically and who's a  total nut job

What's the line - just because you're paranoid doesn't mean someone's not out to get you.

Or more succinctly:  Who says I'm paranoid?

And if you hadn't seen it, there's this oddness at the very bottom of the comment box from "bosco162" and "Frequent Theatregoer" at the Times site {never happened before in two years of these] this past week - an Ugh with 7 recommends on an Ugh?

Just watched a lovely French movie called "My Afternoons with Margueritte" in which Gerard Depardieu falls for a 95-year-old. She gives him a dictionary because she's getting too old to travel, in her words, and with a dictionary, you travel from word to word.

Seemed like a fitting comment given the TOD.

Was just talking with my niece, Marie.  I may be going to Pittsburgh to spend Thanksgiving with them.  Flights are cheep.  $245 round trip.  I am going to put in for the time at work tomorrow and if it's approved I will go ahead and book the flight tomorrow night.

"There's something really sexy about Scrooge McDuck."

Great line from "The Last Days of Disco."

Back from a VERY long day.  The session went very well - a bit slow but it didn't really matter to me - I just let it go and when I had to be tough about the time everyone heard me and buckled down, Winsocki and got it done.  The reason one had to be tough about the time was that the musicians were contracted for three three-hour sessions and could not go over that time.

Then I met Alet and Andy for dinner at Angus - it was great but I'll go into more detail in the notes.

FJL - to me it's odd that he quotes the Alan Chapman Everybody Wants to be Sondheim song, the most known recording of which is by Guy Haines.

Good evening, all.

Am I really the only DR to take MR BK up on his invitation to observe the recording session?  I spent five -- count'em -- five hours there today, and here's what I can tell you:  this is already an album I want to put on repeat play.  Lanny's arrangements are wonderful and the 20-piece orchestra blew me away.  Or maybe the orchestra was wonderful and Lanny's arrangements blew me away.  One of those.  I also happen to think the East Coast Singer is sounding luscious on these songs.

It was especially gratifying to walk in as they were doing BK's own number, because it's a beaut.

Many thanks to BK for the invite.  I took a few snapshots on my phone and will pull them off later and post them here.  If I'd known picture taking was de rigeur at these things (or so it seemed to be today), I would have brought my very decent but unobtrusive REAL camera and gotten a few things worth enjoying.  Next time!

TOD:

One of the two best trips that I ever took was when my sister, my niece and I went to London.  It was shortly after 9/11, also...we went in December, 2001.  We saw Starlight Express (before it closed in January 2002); Kiss Me Kate with Brent Barrett and Marin Mazzie; and the first two acts of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof with Brendan Fraser, Frances O'Connor and Ned Beatty.
