Thanks to a room next to my gate, I am online in the Dublin airport! Checkin seemed endless: two security rounds: one getting into the Aer Lingus security area and a second after US customs had cleared me for travel. I have about an hour before they start boarding, so I will continue with HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY. I am 4/5ths through it now.
I think when the taxi reaches Manhattan that I will have him drop me off at the laubdromat where I'll toss all of my clothes into a washers and take care of that this afternoon. Tomorrow morning, I'll pick up all of my mail and wander down to Toyland to check out the office.

DR Jane, The airport is on the other side of town so I'd say it's a good twenty miles or so away.
Sorry but I've gotta scoot and go to work--but at least not for the whole day. I have two doctor appointments today. Eyes and hearing. I think the hearing doctor will confirm what I already know--I've got a hearing loss in my right ear. I can tell when I lay in bed and turn on my right ear. Things sound "muffled".

Oh, and I watched "The Hunger Games" this weekend. I thought it ok. Not an epic but worth the four dollars I paid to rent it. I'm going to drop Netflix because the rare times I want to rent a movie I can do so on demand though my cable company. No DVD to return. I just pick when I want to watch the movie and pay for it. It might cost a hair more but it's not like I rent that many movies anyway.

Good morning, all.
The room was just slightly too warm, but it's not quite a/c weather. Even though I had a fan blowing, I woke up a few times either a little too warm or a little too cool. But it happened to be one of those rare nights where I wake up during it and don't mind. I rather enjoy it when I wake up early, e.g. 1:30 a.m., with so much of the night ahead of me. And the dreams were interesting, with one of my spectacular epics about my living abode being this incredible place that would take many paragraphs to describe.
All in all, a strangely relaxing or refreshing night following the craziness of the dual visit to Madame Dentist.

TOD: I'd love to see "The Band Wagon" or "The Pirate" once again on the big screen at the Vogue, which was the revival house in town. Saw both of those movies there and loved every moment and the rich colors that Minnelli captured in each.

So...
Last night, I went to another concert at Avery Fisher Hall that was a part of Lincoln Center's "Mostly Mozart Festival". The featured soloist was pianist, Stephen Hough (http://stephenhough.com), not only playing Mendelssohn's First Piano Concerto, but also his own First Piano Sonata during a pre-concert recital. The concert proper opened with Mendelssohn's version of Bach's Orchestral Suite, No. 3, and Mozart's "Jupiter" Symphony.
It was a truly beautiful evening of Music. Stephen's "Sonata" was beautiful, both in composition and performance, and his Mendelssohn was exciting and flawlessly played. The orchestral works were also full of fun and vigor, thanks in large part to guest conductor, Andrew Manze.
My friend's Jennifer and Brendan joined me, and they can sometimes be a more critical critic than I am, and they loved the performances too! -And Stephen played an encore of a Chopin Nocturne that was so effortlessly beautiful that it literally brought a tear to my eye.

I think I would go back to the Liberty Theater, a first-run downtown theater in Seattle, and see THEM!.
I recall that I was about 12 or 13 when it came out, and I sat through it twice that Saturday afternoon...plus a terrible 2nd feature. It's the only time I've ever done that.
Despite the rather ancient special effects, the movie still holds up quite well today, thanks to a good script and fine actors. I interviewed Gordon Douglas once, and he said the was prouder of that film than any other he'd directed.
Sadly, the Liberty was torn down while I was still in high school.

Actually, my favorite Seattle theater was the Orpheum, also long gone. Very sad.
That was a magnificent movie palace. I saw many great films there, as well quite a few national companies (e.g. THE CAINE MUTINY COURT-MARTIAL, MY FAIR LADY, THE MUSIC MAN, etc.).

After the concert, Stephen invited us to join him and some of his friends for a post-concert dinner at Fiorello's across the street from Lincoln Center. There were eight of us. Five of us were pianists. One was a pilot. One singer. And Stephen's piano technician who is the personal piano tuner for some other concert pianists - and, who, at one time, happened to own one of Vladimir Horowitz's piano.
At first, I thought it was an interesting mix of people - in the bad sense - but the conversation was sparkling, the wine was flowing and the chocolate mousse and schlag were in abundance. We basically closed down the place, and then walked back down Broadway to Columbus Circle before parting ways. -And the weather last night was gorgeous too! -And Stephen very generously and unexpectedly picked up the tab for everyone.
It was the perfect close to a great day, and my first three days back in NYC.

Been thinking about it. I could respond with WEST SIDE STORY at the Warnor in Fort Lauderdale, THE SOUND OF MUSIC or MY FAIR LADY or MAD WORLD at the road show theaters in Miami Beach, or several other such things. Those were, in a sense, life-shaping film (and music) events, no question. As was my first Poe/Corman flick, THE PREMATURE BURIAL, also at the Warnor in Fort Lauderdale. I'd happily return to any of those moments in time. But today's pick is going to be:
THE TIME MACHINE, first seen at a kid's matinee at the Florida Theater in downtown Fort Lauderdale. I'd guess I was 12 or 13, and this kid's thing was something the theater did weekly during the summers, and you'd get some Three Stooges and other stuff along with the film. But THE TIME MACHINE was the most beautiful film then (as I believe it still is now), it was the only time I ever saw it at a theater, and I'd just love to relive that day for all the reasons.

It really was! Even though we were all musicians, I was sort of worried that my friends would not have much in common with Stephen's friends. Well... My friend, Brendan, is also a airline pilot <-> the piano technician is a self-proclaimed "airplane freak". The Singer had just completed a major gig with one of Jennifer's best friends. Then it turned out that one of the other pianists - who had just made his Lincoln Center debut last week! - had just had some coachings with a pianist/teacher that I had worked with years ago.
And then there was all the good gossip and tales of the differences between the steam baths in Budapest and Iceland. ::)

Sad, but not surprised. I walked into Colony the other day just to look around for a minute, and couldn't believe the torn, faded, and otherwise abused copies of many of the vocal scores in the rack -- priced, as always, at top dollar.
Great place to browse sometimes, and I always hate to see anything like that go away, but man, did I ever buy anything in there? I don't think so.

Do you remember what scene/plot point?
I was in my late teens when I saw "Rosemary's Baby". As glued to my seat as I was, I finally HAD to go to the restroom. When I came back, I wasn't aware of having missed much. Late in the film, when Rosemary confronts Roman in his apartment and he's trying to appease her, she says, "You're in Dubrovnik. I can't hear you."
Until I saw the film many years later, I always thought "You're in Dubrovnik" was some kind of evil spell or something that turned his words into gibberish. I had missed the scene that showed him and Minnie departing for a trip to Dubrovnik. Never connected "Dubrovnik" with a place until much later. To this day, any time anyone starts jabbering away about nothing in particular, I want to shout, "You're in Dubrovnik! I can't hear you!"

I still miss Carl Fischer and Patelson's too! -So much of my music library has the price of the music in pencil in the top right corner of the first page.
However, when I was a sheet music buyer, I would hear tales of Colony's basically illegal practices from my publisher reps. One of their biggest infractions was selling sheet music that was meant for sale ONLY in the UK. They would send a "buyer" over to London a few times a year, have him buy a bunch of music books and CDs, then bring them back and sell them at their NYC store - usually marked up two or three(!) times the publisher's list price! -Basically to pay for the plane ticket and hotel. The publishers would fine Colony for not obtaining their merchandise through the normal channels, but Colony would just pay the fines and continue on with business as usual.
Thankfully, Dowling Music (http://www.dowlingmusic.com) opened up in Steinway Hall a few years ago, and the service at Frank Music (http://www.frankmusiccompany.com/catalog/) is still as thorough as ever.

Movies....
Where i grew up we did not have any theaters in town and would have to drive some distance to see movies. We did not get new releases as quickly as other part of the country and it was sometimes two or three weeks later before we got them.
The first movie I saw in a movie theater was Grease. Prior to another movie theater opening in Grand Forks we only had three screens to show any films and sometimes they would only be town for a limited engagement.

TOD - I remember going to either the Terrace or the Mai-Kai (one of the "new" theaters out on Plymouth Road in Livonia), to see THE MUSIC MAN with my parents. It's my first memory of seeing the movie version of a show I'd seen on stage. We probably went out for ice cream afterwards...

At Fiorello's the chocolate mousse and schlag is brought to the table in a double-bucket. You can ask for equal portions of each, or 60/40, 70/30, etc. I guess since it was the end of the evening, the waiter was in a very generous mode. Four of us split the serving(!) and there was still some left on the plate when we left the table.

Ah, it must have been The Terrace (http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/4177). It was one of my favorite movie theaters during my teen years. The posh (spice) theater in Tacoma was the Temple Theatre. It was part of the building for the Masonic Lodge in town; which is where it got its name. In addition to the "Road Show Engagements," like WEST SIDE STORY and BEN HUR, it was where the Seattle Symphony played their Tacoma concerts, and also where I saw the touring company of ONCE UPON A MATTRESS.
I think my fondest memory at The Temple was of seeing the movie, CAMELOT, and crying my eyes out.

I guess for me it was the time I went to see YELLOW SUBMARINE with my friend Billy at the Crescent Theater in Camden, NJ. We both enjoyed the movie and when it was over, Billy suggested "Do you want to stay and see it again?"
I was stunned! I didn't know such a thing was possible. But Billy told me that it was a weekday matinee and they never chased anyone out between showings. So stay I did. It was revelation for me to rewatch a movie immediately after the first viewing--enjoying the scenes I liked a lot and catching things that I had missed. I remember I had felt quite worldly afterwards.

It's probably been over fifteen years since I last set foot in Colony Records and I don't think I've bought anything there since 1978.

I remember seeing a pirated copy of Comden and Green's (and Morton Gould's) Bonanza Bound on vinyl there for $25 (back in the early 1980s) and thinking that was way beyond my budget. I wish I had that recording today. I've never seen it on CD.

So now we have a service called "Keyboard Patch Solutions" which does all of that for you. Just hook up your keyboard to your computer and using the software they send you, BINGO, you have the sounds you need. It's rather inexpensive if I should say so myself. It's my first time using this service, so we'll see how it goes. There is room for customization, I just need to figure it out. But, in the end, it has saved me and my other keyboard player a LOT of hours of programming.

Well, this is pretty cool...and about time: Recording Academy makes digital liner notes push (http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-entertainment/20120823/US.Music.Digital.Liner.Notes/).
NEW YORK — As liner notes get scarce in the digital age, the Recording Academy wants fans to still be able to find out who the people are behind their favorite hit.
So the Academy announced Thursday that it will launch the "Give Fans the Credit" campaign, which plans to give music listeners more information on the people behind the creation of a song, aside from the song's main performer.
Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow said in a statement that music fans are getting less information on songs today because of digital platforms, which tend to only offer a song's title and performer. But the Academy wants be sure fans are getting liner notes for albums, and that songwriters, non-featured performers, producers and engineers are highlighted for their work.
"We can watch movies online with the credits included, and the same should be true for digitally released recordings," Portnow's statement reads. "If music devices can access millions of tracks in the cloud, we're confident we can find a way to acknowledge those who created the tracks here on earth."
The initiative will feature "honorary ambassadors" who will help facilitate the discussion, including T Bone Burnett, music producer RedOne, Jimmy Jam, Sheila E, songwriter Lamont Dozier and producer Don Was. The Academy's news release said the ambassadors plan to meet with digital music outlets "to brainstorm ways to deliver more robust crediting information on digital music platforms."
That's what I've always disliked most about downloaded music...no liner notes/digital booklets.

Oh, and I watched "The Hunger Games" this weekend. I thought it ok. Not an epic but worth the four dollars I paid to rent it. I'm going to drop Netflix because the rare times I want to rent a movie I can do so on demand though my cable company. No DVD to return. I just pick when I want to watch the movie and pay for it. It might cost a hair more but it's not like I rent that many movies anyway.

As for the Topic of the Day...
I still regret having to go to the bathroom when my family went to see "Star Wars" at the movie theatre on Fort Myer. I was only nine-years old at the time, but as the movie progressed I could tell I had missed a very crucial scene and plot point.
To this day, any time anyone starts jabbering away about nothing in particular, I want to shout, "You're in Dubrovnik! I can't hear you!"

The theaters we had in the Grand Forks area were teh Empire located downtown and it was rehabilitated in the 1990s to an arts venue.It was Grand Forks first theater and it is still standing. Built in the 1930s. They have a lot of artfilms, indies, concerts, etc...

Other theaters in Grand Forks included the Columbia four, Starland, SkyVu (drive in) and South Forks Plaza.
These have been supplanted by Midco 10 in Grand forks and Riverview Cinema in East Grand Forks.
In Fargo, one of the earliest theaters is The FArgo.... It was built in 1926
The theater is still standing and runs first run independents, foreign and documentaries. They also have concerts, classic movies, and silent films.. They have two screens. They occasionally get first run films from the major studios. They aired Ironman when Marcus Cinema owned theatres refused to run them. Needless to say Fargo theatre was more than happy to run them.
Josh Duhamel is from ND and has always supported the state. Fargo theatre thought it was the least they could do to honor a person who always given back to his home state.

You know, he was the model of Prince Charming in Disney's Cinderella. He and an actress would do the waltzing, ect, and were filmed so that the animators could model the characters after them.

Well, the eye doctor told me that my left eye has IMPROVED from -8 to -7.75. He said that happens sometimes to people my age. It also makes him think that I am pre-cataract in that eye but it could take years before the cataract forms. Right now, both eyes are very healthy. Because the contact I was wearing was really to strong for that eye that may be why I am having problems with seeing numbers and such. I got a sample pair of contacts to try. He said it could go either way -8 or -7.5 there is nothing in-between with the lens I just have to "see" which works better for me.
Hearing is fine and normal. The noise I hear could be from a number of things and the muffled sounds I hear could be cause I'm trying to drown the noise.
