Title: THE FIRST VOCAL SESSION
Post by: bk on August 24, 2012, 11:59:21 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were first and foremost vocal, and now it is time for you to post until the vocal cows come home.

As I suspected, the production of Chicago I saw this eve was a bore, a dud -- just bad.  My friend was the best thing in it.  The tempos were HORRIBLE, I should have bolted when I heard the beginning of "All That Jazz", taken more at an Allegro than what it should be.  Same with the infamous "Roxie" vamp.  So fast.  Doesn't anyone listen to a cast recording anymore?  The absence of Mary Sunshine (who was still in the program) was sorta un-noticable.  "A Little Bit of Good" was cut, and I really didn't miss it.  There was one video bit where the character was still present, but they did a nice job of working around it.  Act Two was better than Act One. I wanted to leave at intermission, but I stayed.  Roxie was not good.  Her vocals were strained and it seemed like all the songs lay within her "break".

It's sad when a show like this should attract dancers and character actors.  You should be able to cast it with these things in mind.  There is a lot of talent in the area, a show like this shouldn't suffer for lack of talent.

Good morning, all! I am slowly getting back to NYC time. This morning I slept until 5:45, which is 30 more minutes than yesterday. When I woke I was having a strange dream involving a production the Berlioz opera Les Troyens, summer theatre, and Clea Duval.

This morning, I will head to the post office to send Randy and Jo their Dublin gifts, and then I will head to Toyland.I need to learn if the power is on, the internet works, and all the other necessities of having an office.  I have a couple of things to accomplish there, the primary one being corrcting the full score and vocal score of DEAREST ENEMY going to the Rodgers & Hammerstein office in the next couple of weeks.  I also need to check how much  work I have to do for ROBERTA and check on a couple of "who sings what" in that show.

And so, the day begins! More coffee,

So maybe from now on I'll only talk about the weather andeverybody's health.

B_Rabbit sent an e-mail whichl does give some comfort that he's likely not violent, almost assuredly not a physical danger, even if he plays with words, and he certainly didn;t need to reach out. Maybe he uses the word "friend" very loosely.  He's on AOL, that in and of itself is a good sign, I think.

Driving away from Funny is Ok as long as you are getting closer to Truth.  Once you find Truth, funny will follow naturally.

I read that in a fortune cookie once.  or made it up. One or the other.

Good morning, all.

I seem to have had a decent night's sleep.  One crazy dream in which I got myself into a bit of hot water, but those things happen and it looked like it wasn't going to turn out so badly in the end.  Of course the end never came, being a dream, so what do I know.

In a little while I shall be going E&T until late tonight, as I make my way into Sullivan County, NY, a.k.a. the Catskill Region, a.k.a. the Borscht Belt, for my annual visit to a couple of friends who have a beautiful little summer house in one of the old bungalow colonies.  Their house overlooks a dramatic meadow beyond which are the Catskills themselves, and I'm rather hoping for a passing late afternoon thunderstorm today since I've only seen the place in its lovely sunny state.

Of course, there is no more Borscht Belt and I never "knew" it except from books and films, etc., but once I started driving over there just to look around some years back, I found myself hooked on the remains of the faded glory.  Actually, faded glory is not quite the word for it.  Desolate destruction and abandonment might get a little closer to the truth.  The remains of the old hotels, some of them, are still there for all to see and for braver risk-takers than I to actually explore, and even in the years I've been doing my little drive-throughs, a few more have burned to the ground through whatever means or have been deliberately razed.  It's a sad, spooky, and fascinating area.

They dropped an entire character? I believe that if the company that controls rights hears about this they can send a cease and desist order. They are rewriting the show.

I remember seeing a production Bent where they added a prologue and a scene right before the intermission. The rights holder heard about it and they had to drop the "new material."

Hi all!  No rain yet and I have to go get my laundry done as  couldn't do it las week because of rain.  Life would be so much easier if I had that new washer and drier but as i haven't heard a word from anyone involved in making it happen in well over a week, I don't think it will happen any time in the near future.  Certainly not by the end of August and with the   storm, i'm sure I will be at bottom of any list for it to be done.   Sigh.

I have to scoot.  I need to get this laundry done and I want to go to the lady who's husband passed away funeral.  I don't know if I will make it or not but my thoughts and prayers are with her.

Vibes to all who need them.

Have a wonder filled day!

Saturday morning greetings!  Later this afternoon Richard and I are meeting Rob and Mary Linda at their church for a ceremony in which one of their parishioners will become a Deacon.  Fr. Richard will be among the clergy delegation and I'll sit with the kids.  Apparently there's a dinner afterwards, so I don't have to think about that for today.

FJL - as elmore said yesterday, you've made your point repeatedly and I think it will be much healthier for you to stop feeding the troll, which is what this guy is.  He is, as the pundits say, yanking your chain, rather like someone who has caused trouble here and elsewhere has occasionally yanked mine.  It does no good to obsess about it, and certainly no good to make the same points over and over and over again because when you do you look like it's driving you crazy and in so doing you give them exactly what they want. We enjoy your posts here but would gently suggest that you have made your point and we all commiserate and get it.  Write some parodies instead.

I've just finished the first draft of my new stage play.

This is the first play that I've written for THE HOLLYWOOD LEGENDS since the mid-1990s.  And, unlike the other 8 plays in that collection, which are all monologues, this one is a 2-person play.

I've been promoted!

I cleaned up (brushed teeth and changed nasty cleaning clothes mostly), and the brownie bread pudding is now in the oven.

You take crumbled brownies and bake them in a custard of eggs, sugar, half-and-half and vanilla. I decided to change it up a little and use Kahlua instead of vanilla.

Smells good while it bakes.

I was going to say that you could substitute a mashed banana or applesauce or yogurt or even some mayo for the egg, but I guess you need it for the custard rather than the brownies. So... Do you have any ice cream? You could always make some "brownie croutons" - maybe gussy them up with a dash or two of cayenne and some Maldon - and sprinkle them on top of a bowl of vanilla ice cream.

I had been toying with taking a day trip up to Boston tomorrow, and paying a visit to the hospital - now apartment building - that I was born in, but...

Instead, I will do what I've done for a couple of my past birthdays: a Birthday Crawl. I'll walk - maybe bike - the city, and make stops along the way at some of my favorite places - a.k.a. restaurants. And meet up with friends throughout the day at the various points of interest. ;)  So...

Tomorrow's Birthday Crawl will start with breakfast at The City Bakery, probably around 10:00am. And will end at Ditch Plains (UWS - in DR elmore's 'hood) sometime around 8:00pm for drinks and appetizers. There will be some interim stops, but most of them will be TBA - I'll announce them via my Facebook page and Twitter feed. I'm pretty sure a stop at the Big Gay Ice Cream Store will be included, as well at The High Line (if it's not too crowed). So...

If any NYC-area Hainsies and Kimlets would like to join me for a cup of coffee, cookie, a scoop of ice cream, deviled eggs, etc., or just hang out on a bench in Madison Square Park for a bit, I'd love to see you. And I'll be sure to post updates to updates to my itinerary here as I'm able.

Was going to make brownie bread pudding for the guests tomorrow, but I just discovered I don't have enough eggs and I don't have enough energy to clean myself up for a "quick" trip to the store. Do you think people would mind  being   served the stale crumbles of brownies by themselves?

Why clean yourself up? You'll just stand out from the rest.

I am one tired old geezer today.

Thursday, my sister took me out to lunch and then to the Emerald Queen Casino for a couple of hours - I won $100.00 +.

Yesterday, my friend, Carole took me to the Snoqualmie Casino for lunch and some gambling - I won $400.00 +.

Two days of fun in a row and I am very tired.

But richer! Making money can be very fatiguing.

They dropped an entire character? I believe that if the company that controls rights hears about this they can send a cease and desist order. They are rewriting the show.

I remember seeing a production Bent where they added a prologue and a scene right before the intermission. The rights holder heard about it and they had to drop the "new material."

I played a production of A Chorus Line once where they dropped Ritchie.  Couldn't cast anyone, so they dropped him from the line and cut his part of the music.

Bk - The phone thing was really weird, though.

FJL

We have a door bell at the office so when you open the front door it rings so you know someone has come in when you're in the back offices.  As of three weeks ago it started just ringing every once in a while.  I'd get up go to the front and no one is there.  Sometimes the door is even locked.   I've been calling it our ghost but I'm sure it's just interferrence from something near the office.  I moved the plug in part and it didn't do it for a long time...until today when I was there alone and the door was locked.

I'm not saying the noise from your phone isn't real, just saying it's possible it's something innocent like our bell is.  Or maybe it's alien invaders.... :)

And even stranger...one night I was sound a sleep at about 3:30 AM and my phone rang.  It was a rainy windy night and when I answered it the reception was terrible.  I couldn't hear a thing so I hung up.   Next thing I knew there were two policemen at my door saying that someone had called 911.   Well, it only took a minute before they realized that wasn't the case.  They told me that sometimes when it rains, that the phone will call 911 on its own.  They told me to call the phone co. the next day.  I did and there was something wrong with the line.  They fixed it and it hasn't happened again

It's been a cloudy and dark day today.  We had a little rain overnight, but very little.  Now it's just humid and a little chilly.  I actually love it, but tonight my friends are having their annual hootie fest (Hootie was their dog that passed a few years ago)  They called it a hootenanny last year.  Anyway, it's outside and I'm not really sure about taking my flute to be outside in the damp.  I'll probably take my old one. I don't have to get it out unless I really want to play.   Right now I don't really want to sing or play, just sit  back and enjoy others.  of course I always think that until I get there, lol

Listening to music - it will be the first release of a classic Jerry Lewis film score - one was released from one of his terrible 80s comedies (Hardly Working or the other one whose title I've obliterated from my memory), but there has never been a CD release of any Jerry film from his classic 50s and 60s period.

I started watching a motion picture and was soon out like a light - for about thirty minutes.  So, that was kind of good and now I've decided to go to the Nuart.  The East Coast Singer is meeting me there at 11:45, we'll see whatever this pre-show thing is, and then I'll come directly home and go right to bed.  My intention is to write the notes, post them, and then be on my way.
