Title: SEPTEMBER SONG

Well, you've read the notes, the notes welcomed September with a song, and now it is time for you to post until the September cows come home.

We are on Long Island and I'm in the kitchen, not on the patio. They now have real high speed internet so I don't have to go outside to glom onto a signal that isn't their signal.

I set up HBO Go for Ant's mother and updated both computers so all is right with the world.

We're meeting a friend for lunch this afternoon and we're having a Labor Day cookout tomorrow. We head back to NYC on Monday. I have to go out to the driveway and pick up the two papers. Ant's parents still receive printed copies of Daily News and Newsday. Phil will never read a newspaper on line so they still get the papers.

I stopped reading a hard copy of the Times a LONG time ago. For a while I still bought the Sunday paper but not anymore. It's all on line for me.

Good morning, all! I have more things to tote to Toyland this morning, and I will shortly leave here to accomplish that. Once I'm there, I'll spend most of the day working on the Moross score I need to finish.

Tomorrow and Monday are entirely open, and I may spend the days catching up on DVDs. I may get together with Bruce Pomahac on Monday, but it depends on how our weekends go.  His is really busy. I am not and that's fine with me!

Sounds like the show was great and the Cicada Club sounds fantastic.

Yes swing dancing is something that is very popular with the young folks in these parts, too.  It is a LOT of fun....but it takes a LOT of energy for sure.

About 60 office chairs were delivered to one of my neighbours early this morning. It's a smallish house so I have no idea what they want with all those chairs. I know they haven't got a room big enough to put them all in.

Oh I didn't even think about people stealing the bikes. Here you could probably leave your bike in a bike rack without a lock and it would probably still be there (although i wouldn't do that).

Wow i didn't even know they sold bikes for $$$. I would definitely carry mine around too.  Although even if it was a regular bike at $150. If someone was going to steal it I would fold it up for sure.

The good thing is that you seem to be getting a lot of use out of it.  I haven't biked as much this summer since I've gone to the pool almost every day. And at least half the times I did go biking it was with my niece. And since i can only go at half speed it doesn't really make me exert much energy.

TOD:

I'd always felt that I was born 20-30 years too late.  It would have been fun to work in Hollywood during its "Golden Era".

On the other hand, after seeing Woody Allen's MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, one has to wonder if living in an earlier time would be that great.  The faces might have been different, but every era has its own issues.

Perhaps we are better where we are.

I am watching Ohio vs. Penn State, only because it is one of the only football games I can find on my TV starting at 9:00 a.m.  Frankly, I am a bit surprised that ESPN is showing a Penn State game, especially kicking off the college season.

Last night, I saw an amazing production of Ragtime.  When I first saw the production, I was not impressed.  Too much going on, and it was very difficult to watch.  I saw it locally 7 years ago, which was a bit better, but not much because it wasn't cast well.  Well, last night, I saw this show in a rather small space (199 seats) with a cast of 55 and a band of 14.  Finally, I'm able to enjoy the story without the hindrance of an overly designed set or not-so-great leads.  Maybe one of the best things I've seen locally in a long time.

Maybe it's taking a stand to recognize that not a single one of the current Penn State students on the team had anything to do with the scandal nor should any of the students who are playing on the team today have to be held responsible or be penalized for the actions of those three or four people who did the disgraceful acts.

Or,as some cynics have said, maybe it was a ratings decision justified by the above rationale - who knows?

Wow, 199 seats as a maximum audience potential if they even sell out - and with 69 performers, I assume 25 personnel working the show - how does one begin to make the economics work on such a situation?  More power to them if they can budget for that! Wow!

I presume BK meant chose a decade from the last century and not any decade from any century.

I would chose the 1920's. It seemed to be a lot of fun. However I would return to present day on October 23, 1929. I wouldn't want to stick around to see what happened afterwards

As Druxy said, each decade is going to have its upside and downside.  Personally, I think we're all born when we're supposed to be - I don't know that I would have been able to have whatever existence I have now in any other decade.  While certain things appeal to me, styles of clothing and music and film and stage, etc. other things do not appeal to me in any way, shape, or form.

I mean the scholarship reductions and the four year ban on post-season bowls games that may well hurt the chances of some Penn State athletes to be properly judged for professional carreers in football.

Moross' "Willie The weeper" is one chromatic nightmare and the original piano score makes no sense. It's time to break, go home, find the published vocal score, and resume tomorrow. One of the BALLET BALLADS is proofed. One is begun, and the third waits. Oy!

Doug, how far from London is Dover?

Dover would move ahead if it would move its bloomin arse (a My fair Lady reference)

Stevie Wonder wanted to move to Dover, because he heard they had sole.

Not that many people know that the famous Stevie Wonder song was originally called YOU CAN FEEL IT ALL DOVER (SIR FLUKE)

but was changed to You can feel it all over (Sir Duke)   because some were afraid of the fish references

there is a reason not that many people know that.

T.O.D.

I think I would opt for the 1950's; not as the very, very, very young child that I was during the actual era, but as an adult, probably in my late twenties.  I realize that the Fifties were not quite the sepia-tinged era that we like to remember, but there was, indeed, a sense of innocence, or naiveté, that was almost golden.  I suppose because we were on the threshold of so many massive changes in the world that would alter our life and our life-style forever.

Very strangely, ever since I contacted someone's at GMHC legal [with a question about someone in their office, not about a medical issue, so nothing like that] for the first time, that specific email address has been steadily getting sex-related spam about escorts (like "local sluts near you") where it literally absolutely never had before, and I'd had the email address for over ten years.

Boy, am I having a laid-back day.  (Read:  getting nothing done.)

Yesterday started off, appropriately, as a Friday but at some point when I wasn't looking it turned into a Saturday, because that's what it felt like from mid-afternoon till I gave up the ghost late last night.  Today, naturally, feels like a Sunday.

Watched TALES THAT WITNESS MADNESS and I have to admit to a some disappointment in the overall quality of the tales.  It's still enjoyable; it has a fine cast and the creators who knew this stuff; but I guess the format was running out of steam in 1973, as it's clearly not up to the level of ASYLUM (which the framing plot blatantly copies), THE HOUSE THAT DRIPPED BLOOD, etc.  Nevertheless, I'm happy to finally have it on the shelf with those others.

My ideal decade is not a calendar one, but a span like 1958-1967.  Or maybe 1957-1966.  In other words, the late 50s / early 60s.  And like TCB, as long as we're making demands of the haineshisway.com time machine, I insist upon being there as my current self, but at an age more like late twenties.  (I was going to say 20s-30s-ish, but why not go for broke.)

Yes, we always look back through our rose-colored glasses, but I nevertheless subscribe to the notion that civilization in general, and the arts and entertainment worlds specifically, were at a peak during the core of those years that I would like to relive with full awareness and appreciation.

But I'll tell you what.  If the haineshisway time machine cannot grant me that, then I will very happily settle for the 1970s.  See what a generous and flexible person I am?

Speaking of dancers.  Last night I was watching a PBS concert of the Vienna Philharmonic.  At one point they perfromed La mar by Debussy.  During the second movement they had some young females dancing, and in the third movement they added two shirtless males as the wind who were dancing with the waves (young females).  At one point during the dance one of the men did a lift of the other male dancer.  It occurred to me, that I don't remember ever seeing a male dancer do a lift of another male dancer.  I have not attended a lot of ballet, but I was still surpised to see it.

Downtown Birmingham, MI, is charming.  We used to go there to shop at Jacobson's, a now-defunct upscale department store.  We also shopped at their stores in Dearborn, near where I grew up, and in Ann Arbor, where I went to college.  That Ann Arbor store became Border's when Jake's closed and you know what happened next...

My 1950's trip in the time machine actually stretched up to November of 1963.  I have always thought of the Kennedy assasination as the end of innocence.

RAGTIME is a favorite of mine.  I saw it at the Shubert in Los Angeles before it went to Broadway, and loved it.

In fact, the ZACH is doing it here in Austin next month, but I'm  (unfortunately) going to miss it because I'm going to be in Los Angeles that week.

Hopefully, one of these days, they'll turn it into a movie.

We lived about 10 minutes from downtown Birmingham.  My first adventure out of our neighborhood, once the kids were settled in school, was to Birmingham.  Moves are always difficult & I was simply thrilled to find such a charming town so close to us.

I remember Jacobson's well.  It was the first time I saw a department store with different departments in completely different buildings.

When I went to the closing performance of the recent revival, my eyes started to well up with tears as soon as the intro started. By the end of the first verse, I was a blubbering fool. Today I saw a remnant of the Cold War. State Historical Society of North DAkota is preserving a deactivated launch control center and missile pad from a minuteman missile. It was eerie, interesting, and surreal. There is one also in South Dakota that is being preserved. The docent relayed a tale of one visitor who asked what a certain time was on a one of the panels. She replied it was to dail the phone...

Due to North Dakota's location it had over 300 missiles. AT one time, North DAkota was the third largest nuclear power.

The 1980s movie, War Games, with Matthew Broderick makes reference to Grand Forks.  The site i visited was connected to the Bomber and missile wing located at the Grand Forks Air Force Base.

I grew up knowing about the missiles and stuff but was never able to see them or anything. There were always a lot of military peeps around. INterestingly, the weather could set off the security sensors as well as farm machinery.

I can only imagine that some had a sense of fear. They were highly trained for a job they hoped they never had to do: launch a missile.

I suggested to the Docent that they should see if they can locate a poster from the movie. There were some posters that made a reference to Grand Forks.

When they promoted the movie, they used Grand Forks as a marketing point in North Dakota.

It was and I am still reflecting on it. I grew up a mere 60 miles from this particular one and there were some further east.

I suspect that missileers each day they took their shift prayed they were not the ones who had to turn the key on the president's order

I knew that Phantom in Vegas was closing tomorrow.  What I didn't know was THIS (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/169629-After-Six-Years-Phantoms-Las-Vegas-Lair-Shuts-Down-to-Make-Way-for-Tim-McGraw-and-Faith-Hill) and it saddens me greatly.

I like Ragtime too. Strangely enough - or maybe not so strangely - the one moment that gets to me every time is "Our Children". When I went to the closing performance of the recent revival, my eyes started to well up with tears as soon as the intro started. By the end of the first verse, I was a blubbering fool. Just such a beautiful and simple and hopeful(!) moment and song. -Damn, I'm starting to cry now just thinking of it.

That is how I feel about "Back to Before."  It gets me every time.

I love "Back to Before."  And the OBC of Rags is one of my all-time favorites.

Are you talking RAGS OR RAGTIME?

AARRGGHH!!  I'm a goon...Ragtime.
