It's tempting to list every popular film he composed for, but these are the ones I know and love for immediate recollection of the score as well as the film.

Touch of Evil
Peter Gunn
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Experiment in Terror
Days of Wine and Roses
Charade
The Pink Panther
The Great Race
Wait Until Dark

BTW, as I look through his credits, it's astounding how many famous titles there are for which he's uncredited -- Creature from the Black Lagoon, This Island Earth, Abbott and Costello films, etc.

Sorry to be reminded about the amplification at the Hollywood Bowl.  But of course it is EVERYWHERE, and it rarely sounds good.

Saddest of all is its increased -- even expected -- use in regional/community theaters, in great old spaces where a whisper can be projected just fine, and its ubiquity in high school productions.  Even in plays.  And in the case of traditional musicals scored for unamplified performance, attempt at real live balance and nuance has for the most part been forgotten in many of these venues.

DR JRand62, does Putnam use amplification?  If so, is it necessary?

Good morning, all! I slept very late, not particularly by choice but because around 1:15, after 3 or so hours of sleep, I awoke obsessing over recording in Dublin. I spent a couple of sleepless hours fretting over logistics of recording Jerome Kern's ROBERTA and anxiety attacks over DEAREST ENEMY. Around 2:15 I turned on the lights, played at the computer for a bit, and went back to bed around 4:30, when there was no one left to pester on Facebook or nothing left to purchase on Amazon. I slept until 10am, and here I am, fretting on how well I'll sleep tonight. It's exhausting maintaining these neuroses.

Today, I'm not doing much.  I will listen here to the masters for EILEEN, and tomorrow at Toyland I'll listen on the superior sound system once owned by the late John McGlinn who never purchased anything cheap. I've got several DVDs I might watch, and I might have dinner with my good friend Bruce Pomahac, depending on his survival of two exhausting days of socialzing.

I had a nice email from former DR MattH , thanking me for my card and wishing everyone on HHW well.

TOD: I'm quite fond of THE MOLLY MAQUIRES, released through our pal BK.

I used to love going to the Hollywood Bowl.  Best bargain in LA.  I've sat in the boxes, the terraces, and all over.  But my favourite seats were always those in the nosebleed section way in the back, which used to cost about two-three bucks.  We used to walk over to the bowl with a picnic basket.  Have a great meal and a bottle of vino, sprawl out, and enjoy the night and the magnificent music.  Saw Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Mandy Patinkin, Barbara Cook, so many more great artists, both popular and classical.  I also remember the time a coyote wandered up onto the stage.  Another time, a crowd leaving the bowl were jammed pack in the underground tunnel below the freeway that led to the parking lots and exits.  Someone started singing and the whole crowd picked it up spontaneously for a group sing-song, It's a Small World.

They may contain missing music and scripts for DEAREST ENEMY, CHEE-CHEE, and PEGGY-ANN. So, I sent an email of inquiry to their music collections and to their theatre collections, and their Assistant Director sent me back this email: You are the Larry Moore who does post the most informative messages on CASTRECL?

On the way to my one day a week job, I stopped for a southern fried chicken in a roll to take to the office for lunch. It was revolting! I threw it away after one bite. I'd had bacon and egg for breakfast so had to make do with that lasting me for the rest of the day.

DR Laura, do you ever think that the people that work in the church are the people that sometimes forget the meaning of "Christian"?
Title: Re: THE BIG PICTURE
Post by: Laura on September 03, 2012, 11:37:11 AM
Well, Matthew, in our case it is a matter of not wanting to hurt anyone's feelings.

So we have really bad music, because the woman in charge doesn't want to hurt the mediocre pianists' feelings. So she has everyone take turns, and the newest pianist to come has the most talent, but he only gets in the rotation when there are five Sundays in a month.

Sadly, bad music keeps visitors from ever coming back.

So I wouldn't say they are not "Christian," just not willing to face reality of our shortcomings.

One time MusicGuy visited my church. Then we sat down together and went over his notes. Including my work. And he was right on every.single.item. They were very angry when I wrote out a report and discussed it with the worship committee. They believe everything is just fine.

It's a very small denomination and a very small congregation. I have been there since I was expecting my first child, and they are like family.

They were the ones who stayed with my kids when they found my mother had passed away until I could get back into town and helped with the funeral and afterwards ... that kind of thing. If I ever get sick, these will be the folks helping to take care of me.

So...

I headed down to the West Village to see my friend, Michael. I had to get him out of his apartment. He's a great guy, but for the past couple of months, he's been dealing with some sort of ennui. He's usually very outgoing and bright and cheerful, but he's had some sort of cloud over his psyche lately. Even he recognizes it. In fact, he went ahead and had a whole battery of physical and medical tests run just to see if it was something physiological. Nothing came up. Hopefully, it will be something that will just go away with time, but, in the meantime, I and some other friends try our best to cheer him up and make sure he doesn't get into a cocooning mode.

Anyhoo..

Since today is the First Year Anniversary of the Big Gay Ice Cream Shop (http://biggayicecream.com), we walked over to the East Village to join in the festivities. And it was most certainly festive!

"Bertha Mason" (http://berthamason.com) was keeping everyone in line in order and in stitches. She(?) also brought out a tray of her baked good: Spicy Chocolate Cookies, Blondie Bars and Cherry-Black Pepper turnovers. All quite yummy!

Once it was our turn to go inside the shop, I made my way to the back to the give the owners, Doug and Bryan, an Anniversary Hug. Michael ordered a Mermaid Sundae, and I ordered a Monday Sundae. Click here to view the TREATS (http://biggayicecream.com/treats/). All quite delicious as usual, and it was great to meet some of the newest members of their every-growing staff.

Doug eventually made his way out to the sidewalk out front, and we chatted for a bit and took some pics. He gave me the inside scoop - pardon the pun - on some of their upcoming adventures. And we also took some pics of some of adorable children who wanted to have their pics taken with Bertha Mason.

All in all, it was a wonderful time. And it was nice to see Michael smiling and laughing and joking and having a genuinely good time.

:) :) :) :) :)

I'm a bit of an emotional mess right now.  We took Sherlock up to Mt. Ashland to be with Echo today. When we returned home there was an email from a Facbook, Bernese Mt. Dog friend who is also a very talented artist.

Small world: I'm trying to track down the Helen and George Ford papers, which a guide to collections tell me are in the Doheny Library of USC in Los Angeles.

I emailed him back that I didn't know how informative I was but that I was indeed the person in question. I have my fingers crossed this will lead to some discoveries.

Hope that his recognition of you is a good thing. ::)

Had a nice quiet weekend/day.  Finely used my one time use charcoal grill.  It was perfect for me!  I made an ear of corn, a baked potato and a nice juicy T bone steak. No real clean up.  I poured a glass or two of water into it  when I was done and when I'm sure it's cool, I'll just put it in the trash.  How's that for clean up?   I am stuffed to the gills and just sitting here like so much fish digesting.

I also made some toasted marshmallows. I found out that Sheena loves them (untoasted).  Toby was funny to watch as he ate one.  He didn't know what to make of it.   I couldn't get him to eat another.

Attention DR elmore

I am in love!  I watched the PBS program, "THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT: THE MUSIC OF THE MGM MUSICALS."  It was wonderful.  I loved elomre's friend Kim Criswell.  And I loved (believe it or not) the singing of Seth MacFarlane.  And I loved John Wilson and his Orchestra; and especially one very adorable French Horn player.

Unfortunately, most young actors are not trained to project.

Good Evening!

Newsies was amazing. Yes, it's over-the-top and geared to get the crowd going at every possible chance, but... WOW! -And I could tell during the final scene that tonight was Jeremy Jordan's penultimate performance. I'm sure tomorrow night is going to be a cry-fest up on that stage.

And it was also great to catch up with Andrew Keenan-Bolger, John Dossett and Mark Aldrich after the show too. -Mark started off down in DC, and it's so funny how all the DC theatre folk who are now here in NYC only seem to run into each when they're back down in DC or in some other city. We made sure to catch up tonight. -And, best of all, he was on tonight as Teddy Roosevelt!

And in other news...

I received a text from my brother, Jay. Apparently, his wife, Kristy started having pre-term contractions again. She had a bout of them a few weeks ago, and had some more tonight, so they checked her into the hospital. The first incident happened at 28 weeks, and tonight she's at 35 weeks. Kristy has been at home on bedrest since the first incident. They just need Baby Grace to wait a few more weeks to make her official appearance in this world. Vibes would be much appreciated.
