Well, you've read the notes, the notes were labored, and now it is time for you to post until the labored cows come home.

Finally home from a long day.  I must say, I'm feeling at the end of the day than I did at the beginning.  The show is shaping up.

Good morning, all! When the alarm went off at 6:30, I was dreaming about working as a housecleaner and struggling to make Ovaltine. I also remember that there were Halloween decoratins in the window. Oy!

I shall very shortly take myself to Toyland, where I will listen to the masters of EILEEN and sign off on them, work on ROBERTA for a bit, and hopefully finish proofing the second Ballet Ballad.

Yesterday, I spent much of my day with emails concerning DEAREST ENEMY and John McGlinn's estate, and I expect part of today will pertain to the feedback.

I wonder if DR JRand62 can get the Dream-O-Matic cranked up today for DR Elmore.  This might be an emergency.

I have no idea what any of my dreams were.  I did, however, wake up in the middle of the night sneezing.  That was no dream.  And there is, of course, more this morning.

Oh!  The notes!

On Friday I was at a Barnes and Noble shopping for 40%-off Blu-rays, and saw LONESOME.  I said to myself, "What's this new Criterion?", picked it up and read the description, and bought it.  The thing that tipped the balance was mention of 1920s Coney Island.  I found later that some of that was actually filmed in Venice, CA.  But it's an incredible film.  I'd never heard of Fejos either, and there are two other features included that make the package even more of a bahhgain.

Strange night for sleeping--I know I had a lot of dreams but upon awaking, the only thing I can recall was a part where my family and I were turning the house upside down trying to find an old magazine.

DR JRand--no need to feed this one into the Dream-O-Matic.  It's only a fragment of what was a night full of processing and prolly best not be taken out of context...

DR TCB - I do know the guys in Under the Streetlamp (http://underthestreetlamp.com). In fact, DR Ginny most likely saw all of them when she saw Jersey Boys in Chicago. I know Michael Ingersoll from his college audition circuit days - a.k.a. SETC. And, in fact - in another tie to DR Ginny and DR elmore - he went to the Miami University of Ohio.

As for the Topic of the Day...

I'm guessing the first silent movie I ever saw - well, it's more like a dialogue-less movie - was "The Red Balloon". We would watch it at least once if not twice a year in grade school. (That and Oliver! and A Man for All Seasons.)

I know I saw things like Chaplin and L&H on TV as a kid, too.  I also remember getting a few 8mm reel excerpts like the unmasking scene from Chaney's PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.

It seems like I would have seen some complete silent feature or other during college years, but nothing concrete comes to mind.  So, the answer for first seen complete feature will have to be -- again, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, at the Silent Movie Theater in L.A.

First silent was most probably something from Mack Sennett.  I most probably did not sit down and entirely take in a whole silent film until I watched either THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA or THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME.

But the first silent that totally captivated me with its performances was SHOW PEOPLE with Marion Davies.  It was the first time I became aware that silent movie acting was oftem more than jsut mugging for the camera.

Life on Canyon Lake is fun. The scenery is gorgeous, even if the drive to work is a little longer than I'd like.

Yesterday we went up a road called the Devil's Backbone and just wandered through the Texas Hill Country. We found a watering hole that plenty of people were playing in and jumping into from swings. Quite a pleasant break from the 103-degree day.

First silent movie? I think it was "Safety Last," which was shown on a mid-morning matinee, as they called them, when I was out of school for the summer. It remains a favorite.

I think one of my favorite discoveries was how advanced the special effects in parts of "Metropolis" were. They were more effective to me than those in many of the mid-70s sci-fi epics.

Ithink the only show recordings you are missing are the so-so ANYTHING GOES (EMI), which does include the original score, and the wonderful SITTING PRETTY (New World), with the magic "The Enchanted Train." There are these EMI compilations he did before he was sacked:
1. Kiri te Kanawa Sings Gershwin
2. Gershwin Overtures
3. Porter Overtures
4. Kern Overtures
5. My Funny Valentine: Fredrica von Stade Sings Rodgers & Hart
6. Night and Day: Thomas Hampson Sings Cole Porter
7. Lambert Wilson: Musicals (off-pitch singing from a film actor dabbling in musicals)
8. Kurt Weill on Broadway
9. Kim Criswell: The Lorelei
10.. Songs of New York: East side West Side (Book-of-the-Month Club)

I worked on ANYTHING GOES and 1, 2, 5, and 10, which was my first recording with McGlinn. My favorites are 5 & 6, both quite delightful.

I have trouble remembering which came first, but one of these was definitely my first (complete) silent film experience:

"Modern Times"
"City Lights"
"The Great Dictator"

I had seen bits and pieces of silents throughout my childhood on TV, but never a complete film.  I was in journalism school (military) in 1972 and the post theater (Fort Benjamin Harrison IN) offered a Chaplin film as its main attraction every Friday for several weeks.

Very strange situation.  i put up a draft of a parody video, posted a link in one - and only one - place, it was seen by maybe 50 people, almost all of whom were people who gave me their thoughts, found a few funny lines but thought it mean-spirited and my agent as an example sort-of thought it not in keeping with the rest of my Youtube channel so the draft was gone, baby, gone in maybe three or four hours (never to be seen on YouTube again, i think!) and in its place a version that deals with the subject in a more my-channel-appropriate taking-the-high-road style.

But that other one was a draft,  a tryout, and it's gone, like a number dropped from a show out of town aftre the first preview - and some person wants to keep harping on that draft.  it's like those people on ATC that keep insisting on talking about the second preview of a show that they saw when the show has already opened and it's nothing like the preview they saw.

Ironic how bk's post and the link I am about to post seem serendipitous...

I have seen a few silent films mostly Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Buster Keaton films. I liked Gold Rush.

My cousin Gerard, has been involved in preserving the history of the Rocky Boy Reservation by examining the history of the group, in addition researching mineral rights for the tribe. Rocky Boy is in northern Montana near Havre and is home to Cree and Plains Ojibwe. He is always on the look out for articles and documents on not only his group but also with other groups. I have learned a lot from my conversations with him over the years. Some of our conversations have opened my eyes.

Now, to the link, a silent film was discovered a few years back that featured an entire Native American cast. Primarily Kiowa and Comanche and the film also featured a number of descendants of Quanah Parker, Chief of the Comanches.

My father had a 9.5mm projector and the first films I remember seeing at a very young age were Chaplin shorts, THE RINK, THE PAWNBROKER, ONE A.M. THE FIREMAN, THE CURE and, my favorite, EASY STREET. Years later I enjoyed seeing all the Buster Keaton feature films on the big screen. Also saw many silent films at the National Film Theatre including a very long showing of Abel Gance's NAPOLEON.

And I am home from Toyland, the bank and errands. The UPS delivery arrived around 1:30, I got some more work proofreading "Willie the Weeper," which is a harmonic bitch and Moross' compositional style of writing everything in C-major and adding accidentals when needed makes it a nightmare to read. I'll be proofing this the rest of the week. Oy!

I never realized Chaplin wore shorts.

Speaking of Mack Sennett...there will be a whole bunch of silent movie shorts, many with Mack Sennett and Mabel Normand this Thursday on TCM, starting at 5:00 pm (PDT)!  I have my DVR to record them all. :D

Hmmmmmmm......probably some of the silent Our Gang comedies that were interspersed on television with the Little Rascals shorts.

I remember watching a lot of the Our Gang/Little Rascals growing up.  I don't specifically remember seeing any that were silent, though.  Probably my earliest silent movies were Charlie Chaplin or Laurel and Hardy.  I know that I saw parts of "Metropolis" growing up, but I never saw the whole thing until I bought it.

Sometime in the early 1990s, Timothy Brock was commissioned to write a new score for "Sunrise."  He was the resident conductor/composer for the Olympia Chamber Orchestra, here in Olympia, Washington!  I got to know him a bit and remember seeing him conduct the orchestra live at a showing of the movie at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts.  It was wonderful.  The soundtrack was released, but it's now out of print.

Primarily Kiowa and Comanche and the film also featured a number of descendants of Quanah Parker, Chief of the Comanches.

http://newamericamedia.org/2012/09/discovery-of-silent-film-with-all-native-american-cast-has-historians-reeling.php

That's so cool!  I wonder when (not if) it'll come out on DVD/Blu-ray.

I don't have all of the specifics, but, apparently, they knew from early on in the pregnancy that Kristy might have to be very carefully monitor her level of physical activity and stress. They have already discussed a premature birth - natural or induced - but as with any pregnancy, if Baby Grace can be carried to full term, then all the better.

DR elmore - I bought that Lambert Wilson album in a cut-out bin at Tower Records. It was priced at $2.00, so, I figured what-the-hey? The first time I played it, I could only get through the first two tracks - it was just so hard to listen to. Eventually, I made it through the whole album... I should have left it in the cut-out bin.

I'm up and have been so since nine, thanks to some loud workers in the neighborhood - more building of oversized and stupid houses, and, of course, the never-ending work done on Annette's daughters' home - it's fine for them because they are obviously living elsewhere during the work.

LOL Bruce for most people 9:00 is a reasonable hour. I do feel for you though.  It is rather noise here, but then once the workers are done I will reap the benefits.

For the first time, I bought some cheap compatible inks for my printer and they're plaing havoc with the print quality. That'll teach me.

I bought some a couple of years ago and my printer couldn't (wouldn't?) even recognize that an ink cartridge was even installed.  It wouldn't print anything.  Totally wasted the purchases.  However, a couple of weeks ago, I took an empty official Canon cartridge to Costco and they refilled it and it worked!  When it prints, I get the message that the cartridge is empty, but it still works.  I'll be taking my cartridges there from now on!

Is there a local place that can do that for you, Doug?

Speaking of "Ben-Hur"...in the trivia section (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0052618/trivia), there's this little piece of info:

Quote
Charlton Heston himself wrote some additional scenes between Ben-Hur and Messala. They were never used as William Wyler deemed them to be "the phoniest thing" he'd ever had to deal with from an actor.

Facebook.  No one can wait even ten seconds to post their political stuff - likes, hates, whatever.  Such a bore.  And people post and think others are actually seeing?  I mean, more than three people?  People spend twenty-four hours a day there - one well known behind the scenes person who changes his profile picture every three minutes.  He posts endless photos of himself with either notables or young pretty women (he is neither young, nor pretty).  He even got himself a date by posting that he needed a date for some event or show and that the person responding had to be beautiful and have other attributes.  And it worked.  And it gets worse from there.

Good Evening!

So... My friend, Yosh, wanted to check out David Burke Kitchen (http://www.davidburkekitchen.com) since our friend - and "Top Chef: Desserts" alumnus - Zac Young is now the pastry chef there. Well...

Our appetizers and entree(s) were great: "Ants On A Log" (Roasted Bone Marrow with Escargots), and their Roast Chicken Two Ways for Two Days* (a beautiful roast chicken, carved tableside, served with a goat cheese and caramelized onion quiche and a frisee-bacon salad; *and as you leave, they deliver you a to-go box filled with chicken salad sliders made from the "leftovers"). Oh, and the Beef-Fat Fries with Pickled Jalapenos. Oh, and the bread basket came with Everything Bagel Popovers(!).

But then came dessert... Well, dessertssss...

We told Zac just to surprise us, so... And he did. Big time!

-"Fruits & Vegetables" - Watermelon, Honeydew Melon, Cantaloupe & Raspberries topped with a scoop of Cucumber/Honeydew Sorbet sprinkled with Zucchini Bread Croutons, served in a small mason jar.
-"PB&J Two Ways" - Frozen Peanut Butter Mousse with Warm Raspberry Compote; Deep-Fried Peanut Butter & Jelly Sandwiches.
-"Farmer Zac's Special" (or something like that?) - Creme Fraiche Ice Cream, Passion Fruit Sorbet, Disco-Dusted Blueberries, Chocolate Cookies Crumbs in a Chocolate Cup
-"Fried Eggs" - A White Chocolate Crunch "white", with a Pāte des Fruits "yolk", served on a mini-cast iron stove.
