Well, you've read the notes, the notes were Sterling and about Kritzerland at, and now it is time for you to post until the sterling cows come home.

Congrats on an amazing show!

(And why am I still up at four in the morning???  I'd better re-read all of this in the morning.  G'night!)

As if this evening weren't great enough, I came home to a lot of Follies orders - I knew there had to be a reason for it and there is: A lovely review from Playbill's Steve Suskin (you'll find out why he hadn't reviewed it before this): http://www.playbill.com/news/article/169776-ON-THE-RECORD-Follies-Once-More-Original-Cast-Album-Gets-Refreshed

Because Bruce is an old Jew, and must read from a paper at Sterling's Upstairs at the Thing, he's to be forgiven for getting the title of his own song incorrect in tonight's notes. He meant to write "Born Too Late," not "Born to Win." "Born Too Late," of course, was written for the wonderful "What If?" revue and it was recorded by the legendary Guy Haines on Haines' second CD, "New Guy in Town." The song, by any title, was indeed a smash at Sterling's 25 ... as was the entire evening.

Glad to hear that last night performance went so well.

You should record  the Marvin Hamlisch show. I don't think there has ever been an album dedicated to the songs of Mr. Hamlisch. If I may suggest at least one song: "Dreamers" from the musical about Jean Seberg

Having lunch today with an old friend who we haven't seen each other in 18 years! He has temporarily moved down here.

Earlier this week a childhood friend who I probably haven't seen in 35+ years (!!) came into the store. It was a brief reunion and we will try to get together somehow. He lives in Tampa, but travels to my area on business.

Good morning, all! I was up too late and so I slept in this morning. I was having one helluva weird dream, which seemed to be acombination of rehearsals for a chorus concert and a battle ro the death between soldiers. After that, getting out of bed and ponderng the day seemed better options.

After breakfast I will head for a hardware store to purchase paint. I tried to paint my new table last night, but I did not have enough paint. It now sits in the building's basement waiting to be stunning.

Good news about the show last night, BK! I'm happy it went so well.

The Radio Show for Airport Appreciation Days was so much fun last night.

The thing I enjoyed most.....even more than the fine singing, the fun dancing, and the skits.....was the very opening of the show.  As the announcer counted us down to air (we were broadcast over the local college radio station)......the applause sign flashed.....the music started.....a trio of beautiful girls in evening gowns singing "Sentimental Journey"....

AND - the ballroom/space at the airport facility is actually an airplane hanger.....so as we opened the show.....the huge doors were lifted.....the beautiful evening sunset was in view, and there was an original WWII fighter plane there, gleaming in the light....   It was a most memorable moment!!!  Lovely!!!  For those few moments....I really felt transported back in time.....

Otherwise...

So far, so good here in Atlanta. I was unexpectedly busier yesterday due to an oversight in the schedule, but everything worked out for the better and still on time.

I had dinner with E&T DR edisaurus and her ever lovin' Greg, as well as drinks with my friend, Tucker, who recently relocated back down here to Atlanta from NYC.

Sunday morning greetings!  Having been awake from about 1:30am to 4:30am, I could not drag myself out of bed at 5:30 to accompany Fr. Richard to Lima.  I slept until just before the service started and have been enjoying coffee and the Sunday papers.  Soon I'll get myself together, go shopping for some groceries, and make another batch of crepes.

Well, I made my trek to the local hardware store where I'd purchased the paint earlier. They are out of stock and have absolutely no idea when they'll have the color again. So much for the concept of stock control. They deserve to fold and I've sent a blistering email about their idiocy with stock.

Now I have to schlep about the damned Upper West Side looking for paint. I am not happy at the moment.

It's a beautiful autumn day outside, and that made the walk quite pleasant.

The hardware store at 77th and Amsterdam had three color choices of paint for me,  and I think I will frequent them now instead of the one I susally do. I purchased four cans of cherry red, and the table is painted and drying. In 90 minutes I will go down to check on it.

DR Elmore, I think we can all agree that it is "incumbent upon you" to post photos of the table.  If you somehow failed to take a "before" picture, please let the paint dry, strip it off, and do so before repainting and taking the new picture.  Thanks in advance.

Steve Suskin is an enjoyable writer about the theatre, but he's useless as a music critic,. A good review from him may sell CDs, but his stupid pans don't sell them, and he really put a nail in the Herbert songs coffin because of his being completely out of his depth as a critic. If he'd had reasonable quibbles, I could live with it but his dismissive review showed up his lack of credentials and his limited knowledge.

The table is set up with the tv and I am quite happy with it.  DR ChasSmith, you wil have to pay a visit to see it and you are always welcome.

Auditionees 1-158 have done their monologues and/or songs, and they are now prepping for the Dance portion of the day. It was a good day. It did take a while for my hands to warm up this morning due to the over-A/C'd hotel ballroom, but my fingers and brain were in sync.

I found parts of his review entirely weird - it's basically a rave, I think, but when he says that the Angel Broadway reissue went a long way to setting things right, it's just foolish.  It was no better than the previous issue because it was just remastered without any thought.  The only way to improve Follies is to do what we did - and his review, more than any other, doesn't dwell on the astonishing difference in quality that every single other person has commented on.  I think he really liked it and I'm appreciative of the review, which is selling CDs just because it's letting some people know it exists - how they didn't know that is the enigma of the day, but we've sold about sixty CDs since the review hit.  But yes, there are very peculiar things in it.

I'm pretty sure we had pizza from the New Haven location.  New Haven had a number of excellent pizza places, all cooked in big wood ovens.  In the year we lived in Connecticut we had some good pizza when I took the time to drive to New Haven.  It didn't take long to get there but traffic & parking was always an issue.

Yes, there are many great original pizzas from the New Haven area that I've yet to try, but I can honestly say I've never been disappointed at any I've had so far.  There really is nothing quite like "New Haven" or "Connecticut" pizza.  Of course, New Haven also claims credit for creation of the hamburger.  That's a lot of responsibility.

I'm gald you said something about that.  I was keeping my opinion to myself, but basically I thought the review was rather strange.

Of course I never had a hamburger there.  There was a great diner that had delicious vanilla malts, and I don't normally like malts.

We had a nice afternoon.  We drove 45 minutes to the little historic town of Jacksonville and ate lunch on the pretty patio at a Mexican restaurant.  The margarita & guacamole we shared were very tasty.  The lunch was good but not as good.  After lunch we walked around a bit and went in a few of our favorite shops.  The last stop was to pick up 3 bottles of Creamy Walla Walla salad dressing they were holding for me.

Glad to hear that last night performance went so well.

You should record  the Marvin Hamlisch show. I don't think there has ever been an album dedicated to the songs of Mr. Hamlisch. If I may suggest at least one song: "Dreamers" from the musical about Jean Seberg

I really like that song...of course, I've only heard one recording of it, but I really liked it.

I enjoyed the first episode of "Broadway or Bust." I think the series is a total of three. The three professionals in tonight's episode working with the high school kids were Liz Callaway, Telly Leung who I saw in LYSISTRATA JONES, and my friend Michael Feinstein, who got the most screen time of the three. The kids are young, enthusiastic raw talent, and I enjoyed watching them see New York for the first time. I'm sure the experience of learning that being the big fish in your high school pond may not qualify you to be a big fish in the Broasway ocean will be heartbreaking and panful before this is over.

That is great that playbill gave the Follies cd a rave. And good that it has sparked more sales. But I would think that it would be easy for people not to know about the cd even if they go to playbill online frequently. I am sure that most people that read playbill online do not read every posting. It is easy to miss things.

I made another batch of crepes and a modified batch of filling.  The original is a mixture of cream cheese and sour cream and my heart-healtiy modification involves Neufchatel and Greek yogurt.  We had a trial run - I filled 5 crepes and baked them and heated up the blueberry sauce.  My recipe tweak passed Richard's approval, so I've now filled 20 more crepes.  Tomorrow I'll do another 25 and leave a few for Richard.  The rest go to the potluck dinner.

If I were living in Ohio today (thank you, Jesus!) I would probably be clinging onto SMASH like a life jacket. I think these high school winners are really lucky for the chance to have a workshop like this.

DR Ginny, in 1973, I worked for the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, and when stage manager peter Brown's stepmother Ilka Chase came to visit him, we threw her a party. My Miami U friend Doug Howard cooked a fantastic dinner - pate en croute, as I recall - and for dessert he served crepes filled with some wonderful whipped cream filling and topped with fresh strawberries and strawberry jam. My memory of him is frying up crepes like a madman.

In the Cincinnati area there was one -- I forget, in a little shopping plaza in Blue Ash or Montgomery?  In California, a friend worked at the Beverly Hills one on Brighton Way, and there was one in Woodland Hills or Canoga Park.  Anyway, a nice upscale chain that was quite popular, but the story goes that they expanded too rapidly and the bottom fell out.  I miss it.

Five minutes before heading out to a party  I got a call with an offer of a pair of tickets for the annual Chefs and Cellars event in which the city's top chefs are paired with someone who donates a few cases of finely aged wine from their cellars. The tickets cost too much to say no. And now I'm stuffed.

Course after wonderful course. My favorite course was deer striploin with foie gras, juniper berries, parsnips, spice bread, maitake mushrooms, pickled huckleberries and black garlic paired with a 1996 Bordeaux.

Happy tummy.

Well, I think it was more like 145-ish auditions due to the no-shows. The numbers for the Spring Convention are a bit higher, usually 220 each day. -And the Spring Convention runs three days.

And I play for all of them.

Oh, I remember The Magic Pan. That was one of the "nice" date places when I was in high school.

That was also where I learned that with enough "finesse" you could cook a crepe on a crepe pan that had been turned upside down. There are a couple of places in NYC that are trying to revive the crepe craze. Most of them use those flat, round crepe griddles rather than pans on a stove.

No, I've never been to Costco.  But the crepe-making gizmo I use kind of emulates the upside-down pan method you mentioned.

Does anyone here know what Good and Evil Pickles are?  Fred?  Ask your better half.

No idea off the top of our heads! there look like there are  recipes online, though.

And...

About that nap...

Laters...

Jose, will you have any more chances to see your son before you leave town?

I may see him and the rest of THE KING & I cast tomorrow night since they only have a student matinee tomorrow morning at 10:30am. (UGH!)

And we start a little earlier tomorrow, so I will be logging off now too.

158 auditions???

Well, I think it was more like 145-ish auditions due to the no-shows. The numbers for the Spring Convention are a bit higher, usually 220 each day. -And the Spring Convention runs three days.

And I play for all of them.

www.SETC.org

*And this coming Spring will mark my 20th Year with SETC. I've played for all but three of the Spring Conventions and all but two of the Fall auditions since 1993.

Amazing.  But what really impresses me is the amount of music you must have sightread in those 20+ years.  Is there anything anyone brings in now that throws you in any way?  You talk about sometimes not being warmed up or whatever, but do you ever actually stumble on anything these days?  Seriously, just wondering.  Not that I expect "yes" for an answer!   :)

And before I end up pulling another all-nighter -- or even a half-nighter, which I cannot afford to do with the full day ahead of me tomorrow -- I bid you all a good night.

Our first of two or three guest stars for the Hamlisch show is: Kay Cole, who'll be singing What I Did For Love.  She doesn't sing very much these days, at least in public, but I'd asked her to think about it and she did and she loves our shows and finally asked if she could.

Was watching a motion picture on Blu and Ray and fell asleep for forty-five minutes.

Have I ever foisted my WHAT I DID FOR LOVE spoof here?

WHAT YOU DID GOT SNUBBED - the Kleban Award parody
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZn00NbxLbM

(semi-inside joke is that we're big fans of the writing of Adam Gwon, who won the Kleban Award that year, so the use of "Gwon" on the "gone" part of the lyric is actually done with a bit of good-natured fun)

Well, I just finished "Super 8."  It was reasonably enjoyable...not fabulous, but not a stinker.  Anyway, my sister just called saying that she has some cupcakes.  Jane, they're vegan...and they're always good.  So, I'm off to my sister's for some cupcakes.

Yum!

They were quite yummy!
