Title: ATTITUDE OR HOW NOT TO WIN FRIENDS AND INFLUENCE PEOPLE
Post by: bk on September 13, 2012, 12:21:46 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had no attitude and therefore won friends and influenced people, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having an attitude adjustment.

Topic of the Day:

The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? (http://alecclayton.blogspot.com/2010/10/goat-disquieting-sum-of-parts.html) has four actors.  Theater Artists Olympia did it two years ago and it was fantastic...in my humble opinion (of course, I'm biased). :)

Good morning, all! Another night of restlessness, and I don't know how much sleep I got. At one point I woke up thinking, it must be close to 6:00, and it was only 1:05am! I tok some antacid and went back to bed, but I wasn't a good night of sleep.

This morning, I have another trip to Toyland. I will accomplish some work there and then attend the Actor's Fund benefit of THE BOOK OF MORMON. I think Casey Nicolaw is a genius direcotr of comedy, and I am looking forward to this immensely. After that, I'll go backstage to see my friend Kevin before I head back home.

DR FJL, of course I'm smart enough to realize the character of CVS' Bonnie is a role and not an actress. The character is a pushy, obnoxious lady I don't find funny in the least when they push me over with their shopping carts at Fairway or jump in front of the bus doors for a seat, even though I've been waiting there 15 minutes longer than they. Those old ladies are obnoxious and lethal. I'm happy your friend is working and making money, but I hate the commercial and the character.

And don't get me started on the odious, smirking, not-funny Regis Philbn commercials for TD Bank!

DR vixmom, I did apologize, but I also know that what I did wouldn't necessarily warrant the apology's being accepted. It wasn't, and I am deeply sorry. I hope this is my last comment on the subject.

DR CharlesPogue, I've known Lynn Meyers for nearly thirty years. I don't see enough of her. I'm very fond of her.

Greetings from Toyland! The trip down here was pure hell this morning with backed up subways and delays due to a health problem at 34th Street. That could mean anything from a passenger throwing up, passing out, or dropping dead inside a train to a person dying in front of one.

So, I'm all settled in and having some breakfast.

Good Afternoon!

And... I got all of my errands done!

There was no(?!?!?) traffic.
My bike tune-up/check-up only took about 10 minutes - and because the total cost of the repairs was under $20, the service was free! -Because I bought my bike from there. bike@vienna (http://bikesatvienna.com)

I even had time to grab some lunch and do some grocery - well, dog food - shopping!

I'm up, in case anyone hasn't noticed.  Got up around nine, stayed in bed a bit, then had a ninety-minute telephonic conversation about the shortly to be released Hitchcock box set, which was very interesting, then had another hour-long conversation with our very own Mr. Nick Redman about some exciting projects for Kritzerland over the next year, and that's about brought me to this point.  Thankfully, no annoying e-mail this morning, although I'm sure I'll get one at some point.

I could send you something annoying, if you like!

Doesn't the C in "TCB" usually stand for "care" - so it's almost like "care" is his middle name?

Who knew when this was done (I guess they knew, but it wasn't public info!)

My co-author and friend, Bonnie, is touring coffee plantations in Guatemala this week. So, naturally, there's a report of a volcano erupting in the area where she is and that they're evacuating thousands.

Thankfully, I just heard that she left that area this morning and has heard nothing about lava flows or anything else.

Several things are weighing quite heavily on my mind today, so I think the best thing to do is go to the Y.  I'll use the treadmill and the NuStep and listen to something upbeat like MAMMA MIA.

Bye for now...

Exercise is always good for coping with things that weigh heavily on one's minds.  It gets those endorphin's working.

And I am back from THE BOOK OF MORMON. which is outrageously funny and even more outrageously rude. I kept thinking it was much ado about two Mormons wiping out their past, very similar to Christopher Durang's hysterically funny and rude anti-Catholic comedies. At one point I thought the show was going to get really dark but the subsequent scene and the x-ray were so much ruder than an assassination. I don't know if "The Small House of Uncle Thomas" inspired the native pageant, but I kept thinking of THE KING & I during it.

I didn't think much of the score beyond that it served the piece well, but the arrangements are fantastic and the tiny 9-piece band sounds huge. The cast was great and I laughed a lot. I think Casey Nicholaw is an amazing talent and the show moves fast and furiously funny. The casr is really quie wonderful, and I saw my friends Michael Jablonski and Kevin Duda afterwards. Kevin and I stepped out for a bit; he the producer of our Appalachian show. I had hoped to see Nick Spangler, my friend who was an AMAZING RACE winner several yearsag, but he'd already vanished. They have another show at 7:00 tonight.

Actually, if you want to get technical, LONG DAYS JOURNEY is a five-character play.  In addition to mom and dad and the boys; there is also the maid.  A thankless role.  I believe she is only in the third act.

The exercise and MAMMA MIA helped.  We made a quick stop for a few groceries on the way home and made bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwiches for our dinner.

No, to ripen the avocados

The best ways to ripen an avocado are to put them in a paper bag, cover them with cornmeal, and then close up the bag.  They will usually ripen overnight.

OR

Put the avocados in a paper bag with half an apple.  Close up the bag and put it in a dry dark place - Do not put in the frig!

Why?  To make tortillas?

Hmmm.  Have you ever had this?

I'm familiar with the paper bag method of ripening avocado's, not to use cornmeal or apples.  None of these will work anyway.  The outer section of the avocado's are very ripe.  The inside shouldn't be so hard.  I doubt they were good to begin with.

Top two small cast plays - Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf and Long Day's Journey Into Night.

Also like Two for the Seesaw, Rattle of a Simple Man (both two person plays), The Only Game in Town and Luv.

There's also the musical version of Luv, called What About Luv? (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000005BHG)  Judy Kaye (and her husband) are in this. :)
I have that CD. I don't find all that much to call me back for repeated listenings, though.

Yum. But  then again, we had better-than-average Tex-Mex tonight with many slabs of avocado and guacamole. So I was quite happy and enjoy all things avocado.

There's a dish popular here where they take a half of an avocado, stuff it with shrimp or crab or cheese, then bread it and deep-fry it. Also quite good.

"Gin Game" started at the Actors Theater of Louisville around the time I started going there. Of course, I didn't see that play or "Extremeties" or Marsha Norman's early works in their premiere there. But I did see "Agnes of God."

Howe Caverns, where my friends are getting married.  Not down in the caverns, though, as that can only be done if it's a small party.

So -

When I got to the theatre tonight, the sound guy had baffled the entire pit with old heavy curtains, foam boards (that egg carton thing stuff) and other things to help the sound.  Bless his heart.  We had a GREAT show once we got used to our pit acoustics.  Lots of great compliments, etc.  Now, it's about having fun!!

But I gotta tell you, this show is a WORK OUT!  Tonight I had a sub-drummer, which is the worse to have.  He played well, but didn't always watch on the tempo changes and didn't always look up.  I had to resort to "ethnic movement" to get his attention and get the tempo where I needed it.  It was a work out.

And of course, I had coffee before the show so I'm WIDE awake.

I had a thought on the way home.  Our next show is Miss Saigon and I was planning on using MTI's OrchExtra (http://www.mtishows.com/resources.asp?id=6_1_0_5&theatricalresourceid=31) along with a few other instruments.  I thought this would be a good idea since I'll never be able to fit all that percussion AND an orchestra in the pit, as it's rather small.  But then I had another idea.  What if I just used 2 pianos and full percussion... very "Carmina Burana" - I'm going to ponder this for a while.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Did you see it here in LA, because that was the cast when it played here at the Huntington Hartford Theater.
