Well, you've read the notes, the notes had a condition, and now it is time for you to post until the conditioned cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: DIAPASON!
-
I saw three dear readers here thirty minutes ago, and yet there was not one post from any of them. Most unseemly and I sense a bitch-slapping from here to eternity and hell and back.
-
FIRST POST!
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And...
Greetings from Seattle!
:)
-
My flight from Boston ended up leaving about 30 minutes late to a minor maintenance issue - they had to replace a lightbulb over one of the seats. However, there was a further delay since it was a full(!) flight and people just can't seem to grasp the concept of Row Numbers and Seat Letters. ::)
But the flight was OK. There was some turbulence along the way, but we were warned in advance about it. Apparently, we flew quite a northern right mostly over Canada as well as at higher altitude than normal to get around and over the turbulent air.
I didn't sleep as much as I thought I would, but I did get a few winks.
-
Once at SEA-TAC, I just kept hoping that my bags would make it off the conveyor belt in time so that I could catch the last Light LINK train into downtown Seattle... And they did, and I did!
I stared giggling as soon as I got out of the Westlake Station. All the storefronts were closed, but I could already tell that this was no longer the Seattle that I viewed through my nine-year old eyes. I can't wait to see it in the daylight.
Alas, I just unpacked my bike, and it looks like it banged around a bit, and I'll need to get the back tire adjusted. Thankfully, there are two Brompton dealerships in the area, and I'll take it after I grab breakfast. Hopefully, they can take care of it on the spot.
-
Oh...
I love my hotel already. Great location. Great room. Fun decor. And it's right next door to Top Pot Doughnuts! :)
-
And I shall catch up and post some more in the morning proper.
Goodnight.
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Good morning, all! Yesterday was a long day, and today may be nearly as long, although i'm hoping that I'll be home by 6:30 or so. I got to Toyland early, set up the furniture for the afternon meeting, rewrote the arrangement of the duet for the Appalachian show, scanned it and emailedit to all parties involved, and putzed around for a bit. The meeting lasted nearly three hours and then we all went to dinner at Eataly on 23rd and Fifth Avenue. The food at Eataly was quite good; I had gnocchi in a tomato-basil sauce. By the time I got home, it was 9pm and I was exhausted.
This morning, I have another meeting over the year's budget, and I know it will be interesting, hopefully not painful, and that the Man from Philadelphia will be in a good mood over how well things are going on this trip to Manhattan. After he departs, I have work to do. Around 4pm, I'm meeting some of my music prep collegaues for a visit.
More coffee and then off to Toyland!

I recall that I danced for joy when I snagged a copy of the Judi Densch ALNM cd on eBay for a resonable price. It is a wonderful recording of the show with terrific performances. My only dislike is Joanna Riding's Anne who she portrays as snotty, petualnt and spoiled, making the character totally unlikeable. And unfortuately, it seems that every actress who has played the part since has taken the same path. Flehh!
-
Good morning, all.

"I have a condition. Never mind what kind of a condition, it’s a condition. And if there’s one thing a doctor can’t cure, it’s a condition."
-
A few years ago I naively tried to find a copy of the Judi Dench CD and kind of gave up the search without gaining an understanding of why people seemed to know about it and recommend it but it didn't seem to be around. Could y'all enlighten a DR?

And The Song Of The Day Is: IT'S BETTER WITH A BAND
-
DR ChasSmith, I guess for me the main attraction of the Judi Densch cd is Judi Densch. She is exquisite as Desiree. It is not so much her voice (which is on par and just as perfectly suited to the songs as was Glynis Johns) as it is her acting of the role. Her Desiree comes across on the recording as a complete character (and this has more to do with her talent than just the inclusion of some additional dialogue.) I can only imagine what it would have been like to see her do this show on stage. And everyone else rises to the occasion--Sian Phillips, Patricia Hodge as Charlotte and Laurence Guittard as Frederik are all great, too.
I haven't listened to it for some time, but I do recall that it also had a nice sound quality overall. And I think it was the first time I ever heard any of "My Husband, The Pig".
Since it's long out-of-print, I have no problems with making a copy for your listening pleasure.
Unless a certain reKord company is planning on acquiring the rights to do a limited release...?
-
If I recall correctly, I read somewhere that, despite the acclaim for the recording, that Mr. Sondheim didn't like it and when it went OOP he didn't want it released again.
I may be wrong but that's my recollection.
I have a copy of the recording and I think it's because of DtM!
-
You are too kind, DR D(tM), thank you.

Thank you, DR Ben. That was going to be my next question: What happened to make it a rarity in the first place? Did they press, like, twelve copies and call it a day?
-
That production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC put back some cut material, and I believe Sondheim has gone on record as deciding the cut music should have remained. Whether that would affect the decision to take the recording out of print once the CD sold out is anyone's guess.
-
Oh gosh--it's only Tuesday.
-
Good morning, all.
Could I add my name to the Judi Dench list, DtM?

BK, If that was the National Theatre production of A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC done in the nineties, I saw it. Judi Dench and Sian Phillips. Wonderful production.

Favorite surfing album: Annette Sings Golden Surfing Hits!!!
I especially likes it when she sings "Surfer Boy" a riff on "Surfer Girl" - and paints the word picture as follows:
"And if my woody breaks down somewhere on my surf route,
I'll strap my board to my back and hitch a ride in my wet suit!"

Have you give me another reason NOT to go back to Seattle?
I left there at age 22 (1963); have visited several times since. The last time was in 2004. It had changed so much by then, I got lost. It took me an hour of driving around to find the house I'd grown up in.

That's a stunning rainbow, DR John G.
The best (largest, most complete) one I ever saw was just this past May, driving from Columbus to Cincinnati. There was no place at that moment to pull over and get a leisurely look, let alone take a picture.

Good Morning to All

Tuesday morning greetings! It's definitely feeling like fall here in SW Ohio today. I have some book group work to do that dovetails nicely with some Middfest work and it all involves reading about France.

Forgot to say yesterday (which cost us a POST) that my Strategic Air Command CD arrived, along with:

This one is a "chamber orchestra" arrangement that, as well as I can recall now, I found imaginative and tasteful, better than many reduced orchestrations. A couple of things irritated, but I'd have to go through it to find them.

Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up... And I'm having doughnuts and an Ovaltine latte. :)

*Having Top Pot Doughnuts just 200 feet from my hotel is dangerous. Delicious, but dangerous.

I checked out my bike this morning, and it look likes the rear rack just got "crushed" a little bit which is making it rub against the rear fender. It should be an easy fix. I hope.
In the meaning, it turns out that my hotel has bikes for their guests' use. I may or may not take one out later. There's a lot around here I want to check out on foot.

Oh...
Pumpkin Cake Glazed and a Bavsrian Cream.

Thanks for all the Travel Vibes.
All in all it was a good flight. The crew really tried to get us out of the gate ASAP and make us comfortable in the air. And my row-mates were quiet and freshly-bathed. ::)

DR Elmore - Glad to hear your meeting went well.
I guess you had dinner in the Pasta and Pizza restaurant in Eataly? My favorite is still the vegetable one. However, I do wish there was more crossover between the in-house restaurants.

Just found out my cousin in Switzerland is due to deliver today. She doesn't know if it is to be a boy or girl. Or if the baby will actually arrive today. Since she's not in labor is it's much later there, it's doubtful.

re: book bloggers and how many books they buy a year
Really?? Are they actually reading 100-200 books a year??
They do actually read 100-200 for sure. But that is how many they probably buy. Many of them also got a ton of books for free.

I caught the second half of TCM's airing of "Travels With My Aunt" the other day. It's an amazing film inasmuch as I'm always surprised at the things I forget from one viewing to another.
BK's close and personal friend Cindy Williams has a wonderful featured role as "Tooley", a young and rich American girl traveling on the Orient Express (and nursing a broken heart) who befriends Aunt Augusta and her nephew...and rather cozies up to the latter.
The film has an interesting theme written by Tony Hatch...and the scoring is often more reminiscent of lush LP recordings (with high, almost hot strings) of movie themes than it is a score proper. Yet, I dearly wish it were available on CD (hint! hint!)

I hope everyone in the NYC and DC area and the eastern seaboard is staying safe and dry tonight.

So...
After I left Top Pot Doughnuts (http://www.toppotdoughnuts.com), I walked around a bit and took care of some "busy stuff": banking, buying an ORCA card for the busses/trains/monorail, etc. Then it was over to Pike Place Market...
-
When I walked over to Pike Place Market (http://pikeplacemarket.org) and saw the iconic neon signs, I began to wonder if I had ever seen them when I lived here before, if my parents had ever taken us down to there. I'm guessing they did, but I guess at the age of nine my foodie sensibilities had not yet been sparked, so... In any case...
I started off by walking the Market: floor by floor, row by row, stall by stall. The smells of fresh bread baking, the scents of cinnamon and coffee roasting, the calls of the fishmongers, the buskers playing and singing... It was pretty amazing. I didn't really buy much when I was there, but I did scout out a couple of things, and, hopefully, I'll be able to make my down that mental list over the next two and a half days.
And, yes, I did stop into the first Starbucks. I didn't buy a cup of coffee, but I did stop in and take a picture of the PLAQUE (http://instagram.com/p/PubLkoR8ZW/).

Oh...
I my Breakfast (Part 2) was a serving of The "World's Best" Mac & Cheese from Beecher's Handmade Cheese (http://www.beechershandmadecheese.com). Beecher's has a great store and cafe and restaurant in the Flatiron District of NYC. It was great to check in on the home office. :)

Even Monkey was fascinated by the cheesemaking process:

Had some amazing cheeses last night from Texas. From Brazos Valley, which won best brie in the country and also the second place winner. We had both. Spectacular.

Tonight, it was porchetta, in the style of what we had eaten in Italy. Wow. Rotisserie pork loin with herbs and pork belly on the outside. Happy.

What a coinkidink! I ended up having a porchetta sandwich from Salumi (http://) - which is "related" to Mario Batali. - His father makes the salumi and his sister runs the jernt, and her husband is the chef. The sandwich was molto delicioso!

*I also got a meatball on the side with a slice of smoked mozzarella. Incredible!

DR JohnG - The next time you make it back to NYC, be sure to check out Sara Jenkins' place in the East Village: Porchetta (http://www.porchettanyc.com)
The sandwiches are incredible, and the roasted potatoes with burnt ends are one of my favorite not-so-small meals anywhere.

DR Jose - I'm enjoying your vacation...

After pigging out on pig... ;)
I headed back to my hotel, picked up my bike (literally), hopped on a bus and took it over to Electric/Folding Bikes Northwest (http://www.electricvehiclesnw.com/fbw/) to get it fixed, adjusted. The guy said to come back in an hour, so I checked Yelp! and found a coffee place nearby: Dutch Bike Co. Cafe (http://www.dutchbikeco.com/cafe).
What a cool space! "Beers - Bicycles - Wine". And they also have a full service restaurant next door. I had an espresso and a salted chocolate chip cookie:

YUM!
-
And once I got back to Folding Bikes West to pick up my bike, the guy just walked it back out to me, I took it for a spin in the parking lot to check it out, and when I walked back in to pay for the repair...
-What do I owe you?
Oh, it was no trouble. Thanks for coming in.
:)
-
Great news about your bike, Jose! Sounds like you're having fun
-
Oh...
Pumpkin Cake Glazed and a Bavsrian Cream.
The diabetic thanks you for this verbal sugar-induced coma.
And all I could think of this morning was coconut custard pie. :)
DR JohnG - Just in case you needed the visual aid... ::)

I'm having a lot of fun. And I can really tell that all the biking I'm doing is helping to balance out my culinary indulgences and then some. In fact, some of the pants I brought are already feeling a bit loose and/or fitting better. :)
I'm also glad that I purposely planned not to plan much of anything. I basically walk a few blocks this way, a few blocks that way, talk to some folks, get some recommendations and take it from there. No stress, no lists of things I "have to do". However, I am building quite the mental list of things I want to do the next time I visit.

Not that they're on my diet, but I'd have had a pumpkin donut and a lemon-filled...

Well... I saw your deleted post...
It's all cool.
My parents are going through a similar thing in Richmond, but with calls from the other side.

Actually, I believe the woman at the counter gave me a sour cream one instead of a pumpkin one this morning. I'll be sure to get the pumpkin tomorrow. And maybe even a lemon-filled. :)
-
Oh, DR Jose, enjoy those donuts for me!
'night!

I will, DR Ginny.
Goodnight.

I have a toothache. I'm hoping it doesnt' get worse. I really don't have time to go to the dentist
-
Great photos, DR Jose.
I'm full but I'm hungry again. Ah, such is life.
-
Watching "Amadeus" for the first time since I saw it in the movie theaters. Not as good as the play, but fun.
-
Page six!
-
And tomorrow afternoon, my Uncle Chito will pick me up and I'm going to have to dinner with him and my Auntie Tess. I haven't seen them in at least 20 years either. Tess did come to visit my parents in Richmond a couple of years ago, but I was in NYC and/or working at the time and couldn't make it back to see her.
-
Now I'm just wondering if I want to head out anywhere tonight. Since I'm still full from lunch, I don't really need to head out to a restaurant. But...
However, I may just ride the monorail back and forth to the Space Needle. :)
-
Well... Since I don't really want to watch TV tonight... Even though it's a nice TV in a nice hotel room, I think I'm gonna wander around for a bit.
Laters...
-
I spent my tonight and my last night as substitute audition pianist for a local production of "Xanadu" ... which is no more. So few people showed up, they can't cast it.
-
Jose just HAD to post a donut picture, didn't he? Now I want a donut. Well, I want TWO donuts and damn it all to hell I may just have to go get them.
-
Arnold, what questions did I miss? I know about A Beat Behind, but it's a very show-specific song, although I think I may have figured out a way to do it.

And there was a great story in the Marvin Hamlisch memorial service where Barbra Streisand talked about how, because she didn't drink coffee, he used to bring her a chocolate donut every day. Not just one, but two.
-
And with that. Good night.
-
I'm off to bed. Not feeling 100%
-
My last day in Montreal and will be in Rat's Mouth later tonight
\\Rat's mouth?
-
I blame Jose because I did indeed go out and get a glazed "twist" and a crumb donut - the crumb thankfully not too bad calorically, and the twist only slightly more.

Laura - I love your quote -- now I can't wait for the local paper (which is always calling to beg us to take a subscription) call again I am so totally going to copycat you!
-
I hope you are getting paid well for that, Vixmom.

Good night, Vixmom. Get some sleep. And please use my quote, and then report back on the response.

I did not ride the monorail. Instead, I walked back up to Pike Place Market to take pictures of the various neon signs.

;D
