Title: YOU CAN FOOL SOME OF THE PEOPLE SOME OF THE TIME
Post by: bk on September 21, 2012, 12:29:30 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes fooled all of the people all of the time, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently trying to fool all of the cows all of the time.

Good morning, all! The laundry is in the washers and I am thinking about breakfast.

I am also debating working at Toyland on the Appalachian Christmas show or working here today. Here, so far, is the winner. I have to redo the opening sequence and that will take up most of my day. Tomorrow morning, at Toyland, I'll scan all of the music and convert it to pdf files and send everything to the cast and crew.

Great photos of yesterday's events and our DRJRand62 made the newspaper!

TOD:
DVD:  Ben-Hur (BBC version, still waiting), several Stephen Rea films
CD:  the new PIPE DREAM, Guy Haines, Irish pub songs

And damnation! I have to go to Toyland after all. I need the officeequip,et to adapt last year'sversion of the Opening sequence to this year's.

It only pisses me off because, if the production team would computerize this score, after setting a copyist up to do it, I wouldn't be cutting and pasting.

I watched WAR HORSE last night.

I'd been avoiding seeing it, but it was on the 4 for $20 table at Blockbuster, so I bought it.

It's a well made film.  I did tear up at the end, but overall I never really got involved.

Perhaps it was all the cruelty shown to the animals....

That last line is why I won't see it on film. Too realistic for me. I could watch it in abstract on stage or read it, as I did with "Black Beauty." But I don't need to see that on film.

Good very late morning for me, all.

Fell asleep in front of the Blus and Rays and didn't rouse myself to go up to bed till 6:37 a.m.  Once in bed, I slept till after 10:00 which is very unusual for me these days.

Then I had this harebrained idea about running out to McDonald's for coffee and a couple of sausage burritos, and I ended up getting only one burrito (which is always dependable) and another breakfast thingy (which isn't).  Don't ask me why I regressed into doing that.  Never again.

So here I am, ketchuping and finishing the coffee.

Nope. All by hand. I tried to learn Fina;le a couple of years ago but my lessons were so sporadic I learned nothing.

Yesterday was a delight.  It was great to finallly meet DR Jose, and to realize that he is just as nice and as charming as reported.  Snoqualmie Casino is one of my favorite places, partly because they bring bus loads of old people; so I always feel so youthful.  We had a nice lunch, we chatted, ears were burned, we laughed and laughed, and fun was had by all.

Thank you, Jose, for making time to visit with George and me during your whirlwind vacation.

I'm currently listening to the revival of MY FAIR LADY via iTunes. *I'm thinking I should probably find a piano somewhere in San Francisco next week and just play through parts of the score so that it won't be so "fresh" in my fingers on the first day of rehearsal.

I have to say that the violence in the stage version of WAR HORSE is still quite wince- and tear-inducing. And having humans commit that violence on other humans (who are operating the puppets and "voicing" the horses) adds another layer to the proceedings. It was more powerful than I had ever expected.

Thanks for the heads up on the WAR HORSE movie, gents.  Not that I would necessarily have been inspired to see it, anyway, but now it shall be avoided.

Keith refuses to watch it, maybe I shouldn't complain.

For DR Jose and anyone else who may have noticed in last nights' photos from Seattle:

"Monkey" is a lot smaller than I thought.   Was he sick as a monkette?

A few years back Keith & I were in a Build-a- Bear store and Keith suggested we get something for Monkey.  We finally decided the clothes might be too big.  Later I discovered how small Monkey was and we were relieved we passed on the outfit. ;D

I'm kind of digging the Amtrak Cascades Business Class Service. Reserved seats, free bag check, a discount voucher for the Bistro car and some nice big windows. -I'm just hoping the scenery gets a little less industrial as we get farther from Seattle/closer to Portland. *And, thankfully, there's a couple in my car who have designated themselves as the "cellphone police". They don't "Ssshhh!!", they just tell the inconsiderate people, "Excuse me, we can hear your whole conversation." :)

Our company has gone to do errands and to help her sister set up for the wedding tomorrow.  They will return later today & spend the evening with us.

Bruce, little Eli whom you met in Portland just gets cuter every day.  She is extremely curious.  I find it interesting she  seems to know what she can ask to keep that I would say yes to.  She hasn't asked for anything I would say no to.  We took a tour of my dolls, stuffed toys, and other interesting items.  Her parents said no to the big snow globe with the carousel horse.  She likes the big double bed air mattress we set up for her.

Great fun was the dump truck that drove across the lawn to deliver dirt today.

Either, or.

It is good to periodically "cycle" your battery: drain your battery till it's totally non-charged or very close to it, and then fully recharge it. That can help to recalibrate it. However, charging it whenever and wherever should, theoretically, do no harm. The only thing to watch out for is if you happen to be dealing with an electrical line that is subject to regular dips and surges. In that case, it's best to unplug it if you happen to be leaving your computer untouched for more than a day or so.

Friday afternoon greetings!  Sorry if I've seemed to be sitting here like so much fish for the past 24 hours.  Our wireless went wonky and wouldn't allow any internet activity, so I couldn't log out before book group last night.

Richard and I had appointments with our primary care physician this morning for some routine prescription stuff and our flu shots.  The post-heart attack honeymoon is over and he's back to nagging me about my weight (which, ahem, is 20 or so pounds less than 2 years ago...).  My cardiologist told me in 2010 me to cut out fats and salt and now our PCP is telling me to cut back on carbs.

No stretchy pants needed. That's what my bike is for. In fact, I think I may have dropped a pound or two while I was in Boston due to all the biking I did. And the hills in Seattle helped me to "break even". ;)

Back from a bacon cheeseburger and no fries or onion rings, and picking up one package but no important envelope, which is irritating - hopefully that will arrive tomorrow.  We now have three of our eight ensemble members cast - three gals - all named Heather.  My decree has been for the fourth gal to also be named Heather.

Both George and I shuddered thinking about what strange meals Mr. Barnum and DR Jose will sample in Portland on Saturday!

:)

Surprisingly enough, I believe there may be some foods that DR MBarnum may have already tried that I haven't and/or won't. It's not that I'm not that adventurous, but there are certain foods which I kind of avoid since their only value is one of "curiosity" rather than "nutritional".

Warning: graphic shirtless musical number featuring hot Punjabi actor.

DR Jane, the doctor was really nagging ME about Richard's weight as much as mine, which kind of ticked me off.  He barely commented on my fantastic cholesterol numbers or anything else.  Oh, and he told me I have to have a colonoscopy, which I already knew.

Was Richard with you?  If not, nagging you doesn't do much good.

Congratulations on your fantastic cholesterol numbers!!!

Debating what my viewing will consist of later... I am continuing my avoidance of network or cable television due to the negative political ads...

Maybe something on PBS or hmmmm I have a number of documentaries on vhs tapes and a mystery vhs tape as the writing on teh label has faded. I have no clue what is on the tape....

I am just about done with Roots and I have already seen Roots: The Next Generation.

CAme across on tape and wondered why I kept a badly done tv movie... No Gregory, Tom, Harrison, Matt or Colin in it

Maybe i will watch Pride and Prejudice... Colin Firth was quite dashing as the dashing Mr. Darcy...

For DR Jose and anyone else who may have noticed in last nights' photos from Seattle:

"Monkey" is a lot smaller than I thought.   Was he sick as a monkette?

Monkey never gets sicks. Sometimes a little "pill'd", but never sick.

I bet he's most "pill'd" after his baths.

I will say Anthony Zerbe is a good actor but he tends to play nasty, creepy con-artist type characters...

He played Mervin Wendell to the hilt. Robert Vaughn can play slimey quite well. Morgan Wendell in Centennial is quite the snake...

I found it interesting that Clint Ritchie used a completely different accent in his role as Messmore Garrett in Centennial as compared to his role on OLTL,  Clint Buchanan.

Did you know that when OLTL did a story using an old west theme, they filmed at Old Tucson and Clint provided some of the horses for the show.

I have a few observations of Centennial where I felt they were weak..

1. A scene in the first episode where Pasquinel visits Fort Osage and a woman is playing a keyboard and flags pop up that have 48 stars.... There were not 48 states in 1820

2. the aging makeup for Levi Zendt and a few other characters was a bit inconsistent.... However, I have to keep in mind, this was 1979 and makeup techniques have changed since then. It looked worse on some of the men than it did the women.  I also thought they Stephen McHattie was  a little too dark skinned to being part-Indian, part French. He had quite the range of skin tones.

3. Some of the military uniforms were a little inaccurate for the 1840s

4. Some scenes showed sun and some showed clouds and in some edited scenes you can really tell that the shots were filmed on different days even if the scene is supposed to be the same day

5. Some of the saddles were too modern for the 19th century

6. One scene had Lucinda wearing nylon type stockings and they did not exist at that time... that may be a costuming goof...

Seven pages! I just finished all of my fixes and rewrites, scannedd them, converted the scans to pdf files and sent them to the producer, musical director, and director. During my eight hours here, I've listened to the new PIPE DREAM recording 5 times!. It's quite fantastic, just to hear the orchestrations for "How Long" and "The Next Time It Happens," which wins my award for one of the greatest charts Russell Bennett ever wrote. The imagination and deftness of his technique are amazing.

The recording is winding down and i am heading home.

Apparently, The Master was booed at the Venice Film Festival and had massive walkouts in Toronto.  Of course, the American critics are falling all over themselves (save for a handful) proclaiming it a great new American film and a masterpiece.  My how words have no meaning anymore.  Of course, they said that about There Will Be Blood, but in the scheme of things that film will not be a blip on anyone's radar a decade from now, including the critics who proclaimed THAT one of the great masterpieces of modern cinema.  And I do have to say it - for me, Joaquin Phoenix is the kind of actor I just can't stand watching.  They all think they're being "real" and deep and inside their character, but at the end of the day, it just comes off as weird and grandstanding and, in the case of this film, completely unappetizing and grotesque right down to the posture of the character.  Watch De Niro in Taxi Driver.  THAT is what these fellows are aspiring to, but it's just like show and tell with them.

DR MBarnum - I had no idea that this weekend in Portland is Feast Portland (https://www.feastportland.com/index.php)!

So...

This could mean that the some of the places that you and I want to visit could be overrun with foodies from all over the US and other countries. Or it could meant that they'll be deserted.

However...

It turns out that some of my chef-friends are in town this weekend, so I'm gonna see who I can get a hold of.

*And I think you'd like to meet some of the CHEFS (https://www.feastportland.com/guests.php?whoscoming=0).

Good Afternoon!

Greetings from Portland, Oregon!

:)

Welcome to Oregon.  You could ride your bike down to us ;)

DR Jane - What's your address again? I could plug it into Ride the City (http://ridethecity.com) to get turn by turn directions. ;)

Good Afternoon!

Greetings from Portland, Oregon!

:)

Stop that thief!  Apparently, when DR Jose left Seattle for points south; he took most of our sunshine with him.  We have gone from the mid and upper-70's to our new high of 60-65

It is much cooler here today.  In fact I should have put warmer clothes on.

Yep, it is a bit cray and cool, verging on cold.

However, when I got up today, I took one last walk around Pike Place Market. Watching the ferries through the gray and mist truly reminded me of my childhood in Seattle. -I still remember longing for snow days and never getting them.

And my train shoud be pulling into Portland momentarily!

Laters...

Trusty me. That stretch from the river to the train station seems to last forever.

DR TCB - I will always trusty you. ;)

-We ended up arriving a few minutes late since there was some speed restrictions during the last part of the trip, as well as some train traffic coming out of Vancouver. However, it was still a very civilized way to travel. And, thankfully, the walk from the Amtrak station to the MAX station was very short, and my hotel was/is literally across the street from the stop.

What is that old adage about "too many cooks........."

*And I got a free upgrade to a balcony room! -Of course, my view consists mainly of the street, the pool, Macy's and some trees, but, still, it's a nice "extra".

Awww!  And I will always trusty you, as well, Jose.  I will still blame you for everything, but I will trust you.

I used to take Amtrack between Tacoma and Portland on a regular basis.  I always enjoyed that trip.

And now...

I went ahead and unpacked my luggage once I got up to my room. I usually don't, but since I usually end up re-packing everything anyway, well...

I made some tea, enjoyed my free cookie, and now I'm just vegging for a bit before I head out to do some exploring.

It does looks like some of the places I want to check out this weekend are running on special schedules because of Feast Portland, but there's still plenty left to do, to explore.

bk and other iDevice enabled DRs - A whole slew of iOS6-related app updates just got released. I'm currently downloading 30(!) of them. I'm gonna wait a few weeks to update to iOS6, but the early reviews look promising - except for the iMaps debacle.

I was super happy as well. Ian was my favorite player. Although I do think that Dan played a better game. I think that if the jurors had been able to watch the show and see how Dan played everyone till the end... that maybe he would have won. Great ending.

For DR Jose and anyone else who may have noticed in last nights' photos from Seattle:

"Monkey" is a lot smaller than I thought.   Was he sick as a monkette?

I was just thinking the same thing. I always thought that monkey was much bigger until i saw the pic of DR Jose holding him.

Got the estimate for the landscaping project today.  I know I need to do it for erosion and keeping water from the house, but yikes. I have to think about it this weekend and pay a visit to the bank next week if I'm going to do it,  not liking that idea

Media Update

Blu-ray:  Just spot-checked RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and a few of the documentary features.  (Saw RAIDERS in Lie-Max last week so no need to watch again just yet.)

A fabulous release.  Top-notch all the way.

Luciano is no longer part of the dating pool.  A couple of hours ago, my kitchen sink backed up with lots and lots of purple water.  It turns out that Luciano and his roommates were canning a healthy supply of Kimchi and decided to put the excess purple cabbage down the garbage disposal.   Fortunately, the apartment manager and the assistant manager are friends of mine.  They just spent the last two hours snaking my kitchen sink

And I just biked back to my hotel through the darkened streets of Portland, Oregon... It was kind of fun! -Even if I did have to stop a few times to regain my bearings. *I now have a new appreciation for the compass feature built into Maps.

Fun night with friends at a place out in the country listening to a group called the Almost Patsy Cline Band, which did more than Patsy's songs but in the same vein. Quite wonderful. Temperature in the low 70s. Good food. Good music.

Anyhoo...

When I headed out earlier, I biked over the river and through the neighborhoods to Pok Pok:

http://www.pokpokpdx.com/home

Pok Pok has become quite the foodie destination, and after dining there tonight, I have to agree with all of the press, good word of mouth, hype and press. I went ahead and ordered their Chef Andy Ricker's signature versions of classic Thai dishes:

Papaya Pok Pok
Ike's Vietnamese Fish Sauce Wings
Sticky Rice

And I washed it all down with one of their Drinking Vinegars (yes, vinegar): Rhubarb. And I finished off the evening with a Whiskeysoda Float.

It was a great first meal in PDX.

This cracked me up.  Ho-Chunk Inc is the economic arm of the Winnebago tribe..  They are also mentioned in the mix for a land based casino here.   The whole land based (as opposed to our current riverboat) casino  is a big controversy, but their purchas of Terra Centre is very interesting

Quote
We just bought the largest building in Sioux City," Ho-Chunk CEO Lance Morgan told an audience in Lincoln, Neb., on Wednesday. "Basically, that's going to be called the Ho-Chunk Centre."

"We're not even moving in," Morgan said. "We're just putting our name on the top of it because we think it's gonna be cool."

The big treat of the evening was the spiced pumpkin ice cream. Reminded me of the pumpkin milk shakes at Taylor's Automated Refresher in Napa. Wonderful.

Thank you all for the birthday wishes today.

By the way, ten years ago I formally adopted Joshie. He had been a foster that failed adoptions (he growled at everyone), and they let me keep him for the cost of his rabies shot to clear him off their books. I paid it on my birthday on purpose. A birthday gift for myself. Best $11 I ever spent.
