Title: WHITE RICE
Post by: bk on June 05, 2013, 11:48:39 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes told you the magic of white rice, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they'll be a little late because they ate some brown rice instead of white rice and they are currently running amok.

Here's a great Facebook posting I saw this morning. I love my state:

IN TEXAS IT'S LEGAL: On Page 4A of today's Express-News a story recounts how a lonely local man, who admitted to shooting to death a female escort he hired off Craigslist, is found not guilty by a jury. In Texas it is legal to shoot someone if he/she is caught stealing your property during the night, and in this case the man -- we shall call him John -- put a bullet into the neck of his hired lady of the evening because she refused him sex and wouldn't give him his $150 back. The jury determined that by not prostituting herself and keeping the money the woman was committing thievery; therefore fair game under the law.

My copy of EARTHQUAKE gets delivered today and I will watch it tonight.  I look forward to seeing it in a decent transfer for the first time since I saw it when first released at the Chinese.  It is SUCH a bad movie.  But I think many people knew that when seeing it for the first time, let alone later

I'm glad BK mentioned there being some period L.A. shots because I'm especially looking forward to whatever there is.  I always remembered one striking location, the twin office buildings on the north side of Wilshire a block east of Western.  What's funny is that the shots of those buildings always struck me and stayed with me, years before I was to actually find myself working on the eighth floor of the west tower.  That's where our company's headquarters offices were in 1987-89, just prior to us being relocated to Connecticut.  And that's where we were when the Whittier quake hit on October 1, 1987.  One gal had come in really early in the morning to get some stuff done, so she was there when a couple of file cabinets tipped over.  (Fortunately, she wasn't harmed.)

When the subject of this film comes up on the internet, a lot of "experts" complain that there's apparently no way to replicate the actual Sensurround track.  Which I just don't understand.  That might be true by some technical definition, but we have subwoofers in the home now.  Let's use them.  Send something that DOES replicate it to the damned sub.  From what BK says, it's just fine on the Blu-ray, and I'll see for myself tonight.

Chas, is that your prom picture?

I had to pull the yearbooks off the shelf to make sure I have my facts straight on this, DR Ben.  It's the senior class high school picture, and it appears they did that for each senior class.  The photos were taken at the south Florida department store chain, Burdines ("Burdines Sunshine Fashions?"), who supplied the jackets and bow ties for the guys, and black dresses (white in a previous year) or some kind of a top for the gals.

I went to the prom, but I remember getting fitting in the rented black tux all too well.

Always hated the rented tux experience, whatever the occasion.  Some years ago I finally bought one (which miraculously still fits), and I can easily say that was one of the better clothing purchase decisions I ever made.

For those who may have missed the rather large cover in the notes, here is our new release:

Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition soundtrack CD release – three great film scores on one great CD:

ELEPHANT WALK/BOTANY BAY/STALAG 17 - FRANZ WAXMAN AT PARAMOUNT

Music Composed and Conducted by Franz Waxman

Franz Waxman at Paramount.  One great composer, one great studio, and an astonishing batch of scores.  If Waxman had written only Sunset Blvd. and A Place in the Sun for Paramount he would have been assured his place in the pantheon of great film composers.  But he wrote many other fantastic scores for the studio as well, including Sorry, Wrong Number, Alias Nick Beal, Rope of Sand, The Furies, Dark City, Come Back, Little Sheba, Rear Window, Career, and the three scores we’re offering on this world premiere CD release: Elephant Walk, Botany Bay, and Stalag 17.  The films are as different as can be, but Franz Waxman brings his musical genius to each.  For all three scores we present all of the surviving musical cues.

We begin our triple bill with Elephant Walk, a Paramount picture from 1954 starring Elizabeth Taylor, which featured an outstanding score by Franz Waxman.  Right from the first chords of the “Prelude,” its lush theme transporting us immediately into the world of the film, we know we are in the safe and brilliant hands of a composer at the top of his game.  What follows demonstrates Waxman’s usual adeptness at capturing mood, incident and characters, including his splendid dramatic action cue for the film’s climactic “Elephant Stampede.”  While it’s a shame that the entire score hasn’t survived, the cues presented here – in beautiful-sounding stereo – are an excellent representation of Waxman’s contribution to the film.

Next up is the 1953 Paramount film Botany Bay, starring Alan Ladd, James Mason, Patricia Medina, Cedric Hardwicke, and Murray Matheson.  Waxman’s “Prelude and Foreword” sets the tone of the film and its tale.  From there he provides a textbook on film scoring, with adventure and drama on the high seas, with heroes and villains, with drama and suspense – all with the classic Waxman sound.  Happily, the majority of the score cues have survived for Botany Bay – close to forty minutes of music, all in crisp, clear mono sound.

Stalag 17, the last of our Waxman triple bill, began life as a stage play. In 1953, it was brought to the screen by Paramount Pictures and director Billy Wilder. The film starred William Holden, who won an Oscar for his performance.  Stalag 17 is one of the great prisoner-of-war films, right up there with The Great Escape and The Bridge on the River Kwai, both of which came later.  For the film, Franz Waxman came up with a brief but perfect score, utilizing “When Johnny Comes Marching Home” as its basis.  Otherwise, it’s percussion and brief bits of scoring that work wonderfully well in the film.  Again, Waxman’s innate approach to material and his knowing when music is necessary and when it isn’t is what made him one of the greatest film composers in the history of movies.  The main title, with its propulsive drums and treatment of “When Johnny Comes Marching Home,” is the perfect start to the film.  We present the surviving tracks in mono, as they were recorded.

ELEPHANT WALK/BOTANY BAY/STALAG 17 – FRANZ WAXAN AT PARAMOUNT is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.

CD will ship the last week of July, but preorders placed at Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks early (we’ve been averaging four weeks).  To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

It was like those flashbacks on BONANZA when Lorne Greene would wear a terrible dark toupee and pretend to be young.

Those shows were some of my favorites though.....when we found out that Adam's mother, Elizabeth, died in childbirth....then Ben & Adam (age 6) went west and he met Inger.....their son was Hoss/Eric, and she was killed in a brutal Indian attack when Hoss was about 6....and then he married Marie or Felicia (she was called by both names) a high-spirited French girl from New Orleans....and Joseph Francis/Little Joe was born.  When Little Joe was about six....Marie died when she was thrown by a horse.

Nobody who knew her introduced themselves while I was there (for 2 performances), but the people who now own her childhood home were there opening night.

They were very gracious.  Not only did they give me a tour of the house (formerly a bed/breakfast), but they also allowed an actress, who is trying to put together a production of LOMBARD in Austin, to spend the night in Carole's old room.  The actress had flown in for one day just to see the play.

Nice people.

Good morning, all!  Oy! It was a really bad sleepless night between 10:30pm, when I went  to bed, and 2:30am, when I last checked the clock. I could not settle in, and around 1:30, when i was finally settling, the damned ghost decided to play with my printer.  There is nothing more unsettling than sleeping machinery revving up without personal interference.

So, my schedule is shot to hell, and my plans gang aft agley. I do have some score edits to do here, and I get to those shortly.

DR Chas, I laughed at the MIKADO reference, if no one else did!

DR Laura, yes, it was Adam that everyone was welcoming as our new DR! I kept looking for a post from him.  I'm very happy to see DR singdaw back, and new members Kate and Caitlynne - I'm sure I spelled that incorrectly, and I apologize. I won't even try to spell her HHW name!

And that's my news. I need coffee.

While I don't place Michael Douglas at the top of any list of favorite actors, I almost always enjoy the movies he's in, even if they're really sub-par, due to his presence.  Somehow he and the movies go together to make enjoyable entertainment.  Favorites of the films would be the somewhat more serious CHINA SYNDROME and WALL STREET.

DR DRUXY - I am not sure it's mentioned in your play, but Carole and Clark visited a rather famous medium here in Indianapolis - I am not sure if this was before or after they married - and I think she was cautioned against flying, although this was before the War.

And of interest to other readers, I am sure you have seen them....here are some of the last photos taken of Carole during her visit to Indiana, and an interview with the photographer who was with her....during the hours when your play takes place.  They are lovely photos.

http://photographyinterviews.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Of course the article is incorrect in referring to her as an "Academy Award" winning actress....and I am not sure why the photographer would send the photos to Clark Gable at Columbia Pictures.....  :o

DR DRUXY - I am not sure it's mentioned in your play, but Carole and Clark visited a rather famous medium here in Indianapolis - I am not sure if this was before or after they married - and I think she was cautioned against flying, although this was before the War.

I have a line in the play that says a "psychic" told Carole's mother (also killed in the crash) to stay off of planes in 1942.

I do also remember THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO. I can recall one episode where a girl, possibly hitch-hiking, was standing along the side of a road and someone kills her in a most gruesome fashion. I am thinking they set her on fire. I never watched the show again after that.

Was there ever a "1776" from the British point of view:

Songs:

The colonists are revolting, we mean really revolting!

Is anybody here?

He plays the vile insurrectionist

Momma, look, get your butt back to England

... and so many others

OMG!   :o

Yes, the next Kritzerland show is The British Invasion - songs from Brit musicals of the 60s and early 70s.

There was that British girl revue, "Shout," that managed to incorporate plenty of British songs like "Don't Sleep in the Subway" and "Downtown," thereby making them stageworthy and worthy of inclusion.

I like the last line of this story.
Added her 10-year-old daughter, Mallory, "I hope she's blessed with it. Polite is better than being rich."

Is "blessed" a euphemism?

------------

FROM THE HUFFINGTON POST:

A small slip-up in common courtesy might just have been 84-year-old Gloria C. Mackenzie's lucky ticket.

At least one bystander says Mackenzie cut in line May 18 while waiting to purchase a Powerball lottery ticket, the same ticket that would win her $590 million, the largest undivided lottery jackpot in history.

In a statement released Wednesday, Mackenzie confirmed her lottery ticket nearly went to another woman in line, who Mackenzie says was "kind enough" to let her go ahead and buy her Quick Pick ticket first.

That woman, Mindy Crandell, later told ABC she had been in line with one of her daughters when Mackenzie stepped in front of her. The clerk offered to ring up Crandell first, but Crandell yielded to the elderly Mackenzie.

Weeks later, when Mackenzie stepped forward to claim the prize, Crandell's daughter pointed out the winner's similarity to the woman who had cut in front of them in line.

Reached for comment by Tampa Bay's WTSP, Crandell says she has no regrets about letting more than half a billion dollars slip through her fingers. "I'm not upset," she said. "I mean ... maybe there's something down the road, or she needed it more than we did. Whatever it was, it was meant to be that she had it."

Added her 10-year-old daughter, Mallory, "I hope she's blessed with it. Polite is better than being rich."

I recall that scene in the TV miniseries.

Holy f*ckballs, Batman! :o

I need to wash the dishes, all of them as the dishwasher broke this week.  Also our DVD player & DVR in our guest room. ???

We canceled DirecTV in that room.  If we can't get the DVD player to work that will also go.  We used to do most of our tv and movie viewing in there until we got a nicer tv and a Blue-ray player for our bedroom.  Now is really is a waste of money to replace these in a room that is rarely used anymore.

We don't have a dishwasher either and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. If the choice was between a dishwasher and a washer and dryer, no contest, the washer dryer!

It's easier to just wash the dishes as they are used instead of waiting to run a dishwasher (as we do when we go to Anthony's parents on Long Island).

;)   I'll take the dishwasher, especially since I mostly do them alone.  During the summer the sun shines right into the sink in the evening & I don't want to stand there until close to 7:00 which is why I still haven't done them.  I'm keeping them up though so there isn't much to do right now.

Well, I too will always prefer a washer & dryer.  I don't hang around waiting for the dishwasher ;)
What I like is the dishes that don't go into the washer fit the drainboard without overloading it while the dishes can accumulate in the washer until it is full.  I think it saves me time.

Elmore, does your printer actually print pages when you are not touching, or does it just gear up and then shut down again?   I know that my printer automatically goes thru its low-level cleaning cycle every so many days or hours. Sometimes it will start it when I am sitting there, but other times it will do when I am away from the computer or even at night when I am in bed.

So very sad.  I used to have a movie poster of TO BE OR NOT TO BE printed after her death.  It advertised it as Miss Lombard's final film.

I do also remember THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO. I can recall one episode where a girl, possibly hitch-hiking, was standing along the side of a road and someone kills her in a most gruesome fashion. I am thinking they set her on fire. I never watched the show again after that.

Nice review.....and a nice photo of Mr Coward...or I guess I should say Sir Noel.

I then moseyed over to the BWW page that lists grosses.....the ticket prices are through the roof....I don't understand a top ticket price of $298 for Bette Midler's show....and $440 top ticket for Book of Mormon....  I guess a lot of people are getting tickets on business expense accounts.

I may have mentioned this before, but tough!  There is a production from Cirque du Soleil that is being done in a park in Seattle.  The production is done in a large tent.  I thought it might be fun to go and see it, since I have never seen any Cirque du Soleil production in person.  The top ticket price for a show in a tent in a park in Seattle is $450.00.  This is not thru an agency.  This is thru their box office.

I do also remember THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO. I can recall one episode where a girl, possibly hitch-hiking, was standing along the side of a road and someone kills her in a most gruesome fashion. I am thinking they set her on fire. I never watched the show again after that.

I think you might want to try a few more episodes.  I think you would really enjoy it.  It was a very well done series.

Well, of course that was 40 years ago when I saw that episode. I could probably handle it better now. LOL!

Well, I too will always prefer a washer & dryer.  I don't hang around waiting for the dishwasher ;)
What I like is the dishes that don't go into the washer fit the drainboard without overloading it while the dishes can accumulate in the washer until it is full.  I think it saves me time.

You don't iron your dishes?

Tonight I went to the quilt auction for the local humane society.  I came home with three quilts and a porcelain cat!  I spent what in my mind $$ goes to help the animals.  Our society has a 91.7% adoption rate.  Pretty amazing

I look kind of grumpy in that photo, lol.  I scanned it from a slide as a way to show my dad how to digitize his slides.  It was just luck I picked this one.

I'm back on Weight watchers.   Tonight I did pretty good.....for a while. I had diet pop instead of a drink (and still bought three quilts, lol)  then I broke down and ate chocolate chip cookies and some candy.  It could have been much worse

Do the quilts have something to do with Weight Watchers?

No, not at all.  The quilts were for the Humane Society.  But they had cakes and cookies and dips and all sorts of heavy appetizers.  They also had a cash bar and some good looking lemonade.   It was  a lot of temptation for day 2.

Had some more white rice tonight - I do think I'm better and I do think I'll attempt some real food tomorrow, as well as attempt a jog.  Right now I'm going to attempt a shower.

TCB, WW gives you lots of extra points each week so you can go over your daily limit and not be cheating. You also get extra points for your activity.  The whole idea is to learn to balance your diet.  As soon as I have a chance to go to the store and stock up on veges, fruit and good stuff that doesn't count as points, I'll be fine.

Six more posts and we top 300 - this has been such a wonderful thing since the new board went up, and Singdaw came back, and everyone got energized again and now once more I feel we soon will be the most popular site on all the Internet.

I can tell you that May 2013 was our lowest posting month in all nine years of this board - absolutely, positively.  In posts, in page views, in everything.

I can also tell you it was so bad that June will have surpassed the entire month of May tomorrow.  I hope we never ever have another month like that.

I've scheduled the notes to go up at 12:02 - hopefully whatever this plug-in that the tech added will do the trick - he did test it earlier and it did work so I'm ever hopeful.  At least I know what to do if it doesn't work, so it's only about twenty seconds to delete the schedule and post it.
