Title: HOME IMPROVEMENT
Post by: bk on September 08, 2004, 11:59:14 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you've digested the notes, you know the notes' deepest meanings, and now it is time to post until the intrepid and improved cows come home.

Good Evening! Good Morning!

Hmmm... One-shot wonders...  The only ones that come to mind right now are:

The Knack - "My Sharona"
The guy who sang "Rock Me, Amadeus"
And the group who sang "Pop, Pop... Pop Music"
Men Without Hats (I think - I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong) - "Come On, Eileen"... Hmmm... Or were they responsible for "Safety Dance"?  Hmmm...

-Sorry, I'm a bit too tired/lazy right now to Google for those particular unknowns.  There were a bunch of one-hit wonders in the 80's pop-music scene.  And they were one-shot wonders for a reason.  ;)

OK... Time for me to start rolling up my sidewalk... WHAT!?!?!?!?!

Goodnight.

Just so I won't be accused of Wussbergering, I'll post. I've been on the phone for the past hour, therefore not doing exciting late posts. Not that I had anything exciting to post about...

Goodnight.

Men Without Hats did sing "Safety Dance," as well as "Who Can It Be Now?" and "Down Under" but it was Dexy's Midnight Runners who sang "Come On Eileen."  These are songs that I knew in high school.  They bring back such memories!  And not all bad ones, either. ;D  Anyway, I also remember "Pop Musik" (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0002F1G7E/qid=1094714746/sr=1-6/ref=sr_1_6/103-4358801-4536629?v=glance&s=music) by M (I had to look up who recorded it.  I don't think if I ever knew until now!).  And I think it was Falco who did "Rock Me, Amadeus."

Another one-hit-wonder that I LOVED was "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles (it also was the very first music video shown on MTV these many years ago).  Also, "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves was one of my all time favorite hits of the 80s!

Always difficult to answer if restricted to "One Hit Wonder" status as it singers often had hits in other countries and under other names.. The one or two hit songs is easier.

Star of them all was Joan Weber with "Let Me Go Lover".
Cathy Carr's "Ivory Tower" is worth a mention but she certainly had other minor chart entries.
Kyu Sakamoto's "Sukiyaki" is a classic as is "Rhythm Of The Rain" by the Cascades. I guess Sister Janet Mead's "The Lord's Prayer" and The Singing Nun's "Dominique"  should get a mention.

I always like Tab Hunter's Warner Brothers recordings "There's No Fool Like A Young Fool" and "Apple Blosson Time".

A name that some DRs may know in another context (The Orr connection) or should perhaps at least by his first name) Joe Dolcé.  "Shaddup Your Face".

Katrina & the Waves won the Eurovison song festival for the UK a few years back with a million selling disc "Love Shine a Light"

Of course I would be remiss if I didn't mention Flip Top Box and Nee Nee Na Na Na Na Nu Nu by Dickie Do and The Don'ts, Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots by The Cheers (which included Bert Convy), Ernie Felice singing Hot Spell by Burt Bacharach.  Others will come to me.

One hit wonders?  Well, I don't really know many off hand.  I love Mrs. Miller (mentioned by BK).  Her greatest hits are always fun to listen to, especially "Downtown" and "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'."

I will add to the list.....Yma Sumac.  I hope she counts.  She did produce a number of albums, but is mostly forgotten today.  I know her primarily through the recording of FLAHOOLEY.  I swear she sounds like a tea kettle whistling in one number! (And I mean that as a compliment)

From the world of musical theatre...how about the female lead in GREENWILLOW?  I can't remember her name right now (and I don't know where my CD copy is), but I think she has a lovely voice.  I don't think she did many other major things except for this outing.

Great production for Vicki by the wonderful Tommy "Snuff"Garrett. The album produced two other really big hits here in OZ. "He Did With Me" which was #1 for a few weeks and "Ships In The Night".

I get a chance to "show off". Wow!

Many DRs will remember Vicki from her years on the Carol Burnette show.

Vicki is married to Bobby Russell - composer of "The Night the Lights..." and that classic of pop "Honey"

I hesitate to call Judy Tyler a one-hit wonder; she was killed in a car accident while in her 20s. She brings both strength and vulnerability to Pipe Dream's exquisite "Everybody's Got a Home But Me."

"Afternoon Delight" by the Starland Vocal Band.

No, D-I-T, I don't remember Richard Burton singing "A Married Man" one of the lilting tunes from Baker Street. You have a minor classic there, methinks.

I have Baker Street on vinyl but I missed Mr. Burton's release of the single. Hmm, I'll have to go through the used 45rpm records at Footlight to see if it's there :-)

Well....good first house and water heater vibes to MR BK.

I enjoyed TCB's "small world" story about WHAT IF!

DRJOSE if you spend any more time at Best Buy, you will have to clock in.

I have a HITS CD by Mr Tab Hunter - an import - and yes his vocal ability was - uh - limited....but I still enjoy a track or two.  And Gale Storm, yes - she had her share of top 40 hits.

I love VIDEO KILLED THE RADIO STAR as well!  And A Flock of Seagulls, I Ran so Far Away....

Hmmmmmmm one hit wonders.....Millie Small and MY BOY LOLLIPOP.

Oh, man, One Hit Wonders are my favorites! My list would be pages long and many of them have been mentioned but I will through in a few more:

Talk Talk "Its My Life"

The Orlons "Wah Watusi" (although they did actually have another hit with "Don't Hang Up", but I will mention them anyhow)

Boys Don't Cry "I Wanna Be a Cowboy"

Edison Lighthouse "Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes" (which is a rather suggestive title if you think about it)

And if we are mentioning just celebrity one hit wonders then:

David Soul "Don't Give up on us Baby"

John Schneider "It's Now or Never" (# 14 on the top 40 pop charts, but I think he has had several hits on the country charts)

I need help from the other DR's!

My second set of I LOVE LUCY THE SECOND SEASON DVD's is having the same problem.  The CBS Video logo and then the "no copying" screen comes up - then DVD screen comes up that says "incompatible disk" - all of the disks do that.

This is my second set, so it is the player.  No other problems with other disks.  It is an RCA DVD Player about a year old.  Do I need to buy a new one already?

I have emailed RCA Customer Service, but well....who knows how long that will take?

And on a more obscure not I have albums of Miyoshi Umeki which are excellent...she sings a mean "Somewhere over the Rainbow" and I have a very nice album by her FLOWER DRUM SONG co-star James Shigeta which I didn't care for at first, but it has now really grown on me.

And while digging through some old family albums I found that my sister had George Maharis' album. She had quite the crush on him when she was a pre-teen. I felt it my duty to inform her that her love for him could never be! LOL!

If memory serves (a Tenderloin reference), Alexander Cohen produced Baker Street and Richard Burton's Hamlet at around the same time - so he was able to coax RB into making the cover version of "A Married Man." Of course, all this took place around the same time as RB-Elizabeth Taylor marriage.

And DR Ben, this one isn't in my collection. I merely found it on the net, and followed DR George's instructions for copying and pasting the image.

Really, now?  I guess I never heard that about Mr. Maharis.

The more important question is whether SHE kept the framed cover artwork that came with the album that I referred to a couple of weeks ago.

And I finally remembered the cut on that album that I liked.  He did a version of "The More I See You," which was the first slow version of that song I had ever heard.  After that I learned that that was the intended tempo, and the fast version (Peter Allen?) was the anomaly.

From the master (DR George) himself:

To imbed an image within the text of a post, you have to link an image that's already somewhere on the Internet.  If you quote my message, you can see the Internet link and code.

You find an image somewhere on the Internet, right click on the picture and click on "Properties."  You should see "Address (URL)" and an Internet address for the individual image.  If you triple click on it (assuming you're using a Windows-based PC...I have no idea about Macs), that Internet address will be completely highlighted.  I'd recommend triple clicking instead of highlighting manually, because the entire address may not show.  Anyway, after it's highlighted, right click on the highlighted area and click "Copy."  Then, create a post at HHW and paste the image link where you want it.  NOW THE IMPORTANT PART:  highlight again the entire Internet link and click the "Insert Image" option above...it's directly under the "Glow" option (fifth from the left in the second row) as part of the "Add YABBC tags" options.

When you do it this way (as opposed to "attaching" an image file), you can preview it and see exactly what it's going to look like.  I hope this helps!

Some site-masters take great offense to having us link to a photo on their site.  Many have put blocks up to prevent it.  Others will cut your link after they've discovered it.

Another way is to "copy" the photo and add it to your computer's files on your C:\ drive ("My Photos" folder).  You can then link to that with no problem, plus you can re-size the photo so that it fits within the acceptable parameters of this here site.

Any site in the GeoCities family will not allow you to "hot link" - and yes it is best to check the "properties" to make sure we don't go into CinemaScope.  Any number over 500 in heighth and/or width might be a risk!

Re:  Richard Burton's A Married Man--his version actually charted, believe it or don't.

Chart guru Joel Whitburn is headquartered in Menomonee Falls, WI, the tiny town Betsy is from.  I had just discovered Joel's books shortly before getting engaged to Betsy, so when we were back there for our wedding on a lark I called his office and it turns out the entire staff went to school with either Betsy or her brothers, so they invited me over.  It was a total trip--a fairly small office stacked literally floor to ceiling with thousands, probably tens of thousands, of copies of Billboard.  Joel was out that day so I didn't get to see the super-secret vault containing his rare 45s.

I am a one-hit wonder fanatic (though some of these are actually two-hit wonders, or only-charted-on-AC wonders):

Bossa Rio (Sergio Mendes' spinoff group)--"With Your Love Now"

Lani Hall (Sergio's former lead singer with Brasil '66 and Mrs. Herb Alpert)--"Where's Your Angel"

Brent Bourgeois--"Dare to Fall in Love"

Nick DeCaro (great staff arranger at A&M)--"If I Only Had Time"

And in the beating a dead horse (and/or actress) department--fans of NPR should stay tuned.  There's going to be a major story done later this year perhaps related to my favorite posting subject.  I am currently sworn to secrecy but y'all will be the first to know.

I'll be interested in reading BK's comments on Season 3 of ALIAS, too, but I'm not sure he's going to like it. It WAS all over the map, kind of struggling to right itself after the surprises and unexpected developments at the end of Season 2. Although its over-the-top quality is always enjoyable and I wouldn't think of missing an episode, I thought creatively, it seemed muddled in Season 3. Supposedly, Season 4 is going to steady the water and get back to the solid spy work and situations that made Season 1 so terrific.

Well, I had a productive lunch. I went to Footlight and found a copy of Golden Rainbow w/Mr. Lawrence and Miss Gorme for $4 (four) dollars. It's missing the book but it's got the back insert tray w/the 16 tracks listed so I'm happy. I also found for $4 dollars the World Premiere London Cast Recording of Doctor Doolittle. That one slipped by me. I didn't hear of a stage version of Doolittle. Again, no book, but so what. And finally, there was a promotional CD from Sh-K-Boom of Bare, the new "pop" opera. I don't know if it's the entire show (11 tracks) and it, too, is missing the book but I got them all for $4 dollars apiece. I just peeled off the $4 sticker from Golden Rainbow to find the original sticker price of $23.95! Yikes!

I have my listening this afternoon :-)

Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, used to have two really great newspapers that I subscribed to.  There was the Menomonee Falls Gazette and the Menomonee Falls Guardian.  Both printed only comic strips, one funny strips and one story strips.  They printed both the current top strips and classics, a week's worth at a time.  They still owe me money for the rest of my subscriptions when they went out of business.

DR WEL:  did you used to live in Menomonee Falls?  You might have known Betsy's family--they owned the only big grocery/dry goods store in town for years and years.

In fact, here 's a great small world story:  I was remodelling a previous house I used to own right after I had just met Betsy.  The guy doing the work was a guy who had worked for me several times before, and whom I knew only from the work he had done for me in Portland.  I was telling him about my new girlfriend and mentioned she came from a little town in Wisconsin.  He said, "I'm from a little town in Wisconsin..."--and you can probably guess the rest.  The really mind-blowing thing was he still had a bunch of old grocery sacks from Betsy's family's store lying around his house that he had kept stuff in for years and years!!

I went to the "official" Steve and Eydie Web site and all I can say is, somebody send those folks a Web consultant. The Web site is not very attractive to look at and much, if not all the text is in very large CAPS.

Mr. Bakalor (or somebody who knows how to put up a Web page) should call these people.

I think a couple of us have commented on this before re:  Steve and Eydie, but they had a really fun email glitch a few years ago (can't remember if it was after Sammy or Rainbow came out on CD from their site), but several people who had ordered whatever CD it was from them starting getting personal emails from their manager to some booking agent in Hawaii for a potential gig.  The negotiations were hysterically funny, I wish I had saved the emails now.

As I was channel flipping earlier, I came across Jane Pauley's new talk show... Hmm...

Ben!  Great to see you back.

I am not posting from work.  I am still at home.  My little Angel was very sick in the night, so I was up most of the morning hours cleaining up problems from both ends.  I was quite sure that I would be taking her to the Animal Hospital this morning, but she seems quite perky today.  Perhaps she is just getting nervous about the impending move (mine, not BK's)

Either that or I should stop letting her eat food that I cooked myself!

Jane, sorry to hear that Bogie is still not well, but this new doctor sounds very promising.  I am keeping good thoughts for all of you.

I've been going around singing, "Where's my other hat? Help me find my other hat."

I have to wear one - dermatologist's orders - and the old cap had seen better days. So yesterday I bought a new one and wore it home. It has to be here, no?

Fortunately, since I was about to walk Archie, I was able to retrieve the old cap from the dishwasher (the best place to wash an old cap said the guy who sold me the new one; and I think he was right).

Well, I never!  (Well, maybe once...)

I was just browsing through some of the posts that I missed during my long absence, and I came across your quatrain on Inge.

Would you believe that I used exactly that same rhyme in my once-and-future internet novel Any Other Season, in Chapter 13:  Rhyming Orange?  The chapter contains about a dozen attempts to rhyme the infamously unrhymable word, and that was one of them.

I guess great minds think alike.  8-)>

Oh yes! Hot water is a lovely thing.
Sometimes I forget in my little guest house that it takes time for the water to heat up. Once it does, there's plenty of it, as hot as you want. But it takes a little time initially to get out here, so I have to plan my showers and turn on the water 10 minutes ahead of time. Once in a while I forget and then were you a fly on the wall -- there's actually one here riright now - I left the door open for 2 seconds and the cursed thing flew in - but I digress -- were you flies on the wall, DRs, you would hear some choice swearing at the poor cold water that's just minding its own business and slowly warming up.

Evening all.  Not much to say tonight.  I’m tired and for what ever reason my arthritis is kicking up in my hand.  I don’t really feel up to a lot of typing.

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed all of the wonderful pictures today.  I didn’t realize that California was that hilly.  I somehow thought it was flat like Florida.

I signed up for PaintBucket but I haven't had the chance to put anything there.  I will play with it this weekend if Ivan will leave us alone and we have power.

Jane, good vibes for your kitty.  I hope this is a marked improvement very soon.

Best of luck with the house, Bruce.

Did any one see this story?

TCB I’m glad your little Angel is feeling better today.  When Bogie gets that sick I have to watch for dehydration.  Thank you for your good thoughts and I hope your move goes well.  When are you moving?

Bruce, a hot shower and a functioning washing machine, life is good.

Matt H, nice picture.

Michael Shayne thanks for the trip to Palm Springs.  I have wanted to return there for years.  Last I was there I didn’t have children yet.  I bet it has changed.  The captions on the pool photos were very funny,

Danise I hope the penalty for animal cruelty is tough in Florida.  Thanks to the publicity those pups are bound to get good homes now.

What a day I've had today, Dear Readers.  Too much to do, too little time.  (Oh.  A Funny Girl reference followed immediately by an almost Marlene Dietrich reference.)

Last night I was at opening night of the Los Angeles Opera.  The "Season" has begun!  The featured work was Mozart's Idomeneo.  Not as well known as some of his other--and later--operas, it does contain some splendid music.  It is an opera seria, which is a style of opera typified by heroic subject matter and recitative and aria followed by recitative and aria followed by recitative and aria.  Mozart does liven matters up some with a duet or a chorus here and there, but Idomeneo does give life to the saying "Life is short.  Opera is long."

Mr. Placido Domingo starred in the title role, and he was in terrific voice, though Miss Veronica Villarroel nearly stole the show in the role of Elettra.

It was a gala evening, with a fancy schmancy dinner following the performance.  (I wasn't invited, so I didn't go.)  I did have one bona fide celebrity sighting:  Miss Doris Roberts.  I'm sure there were many other celebs present, but I just didn't run into them.

It's possible - but I really don't remember. I mean, I remember him, of course, but I was working on two series and some longform at the time, so unless an actor did something unbelievably good or bad, it's a blur. I think that Rummy had problems with his lines - that's a vague memory - but don't quote me.
There was no regular character named "Uncle Rummy" - so he may have appeared on a few episodes - or perhaps just one.

Lucky you!
Golden Rainbow, contrary to what most think, is terrific on cd... and what a bargain at 4 bucks!

Doctor Dolittle is wonderfully orchestrated, with nice new songs and.... as a bonus, there's Dame Julie speaking AND singing for Polynesia!

Yes! Lucky you! :D

Jane,

I'm with Jay on this one: nix to eating while on the phone. I sometimes hear my sister chomp while we're talking, and I have to say it bugs me. Folding socks, however, is acceptable. (Agree, HHWMEJ?) As for driving while on the phone (or is it phoning while driving?), don't get me started. A couple of years ago, a friend called on my birthday. Her greeting went something like this: "Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear --- Michael, quick there's a parking spot over there ... "

Okay, MattH!  A little cheesecake.

When I was in LA I went window shopping and went into a book store, forgot the name, that had a lot of freebie newspapers. I went through them all to see if any of them had a review of What If? Only one of them had a review of it and all I can say is how can a gay man writing about musical theater not get the show???

Well, I am off to my Preview, I mean final dress rehearsal.

Apparently Jane, I am going to have to begin the moving process tomorrow, which also happens to be Opening Night!  If you read this, DR and DS, Jed, if you have no plans this weekend, your help would be much appreciated.

Michael Shayne -- I hope you caught the mention of my friends meeting you Friday night.

As some of you might know, I work the front desk of a hotel and i sometimes get calls from guests in their room who talk to me while munching on something!
Could not help it the other day and said:
"Hope what you're eating is good!?!"

We, (I!) snobby French find that extremely rude!

One thing at a time, please!
Let's take time to LIVE!

Very nice pictures, Michael Shayne!
Yes, Florida does not have beautiful trees like that!
Now, you got beautiful views and.... you ALSO expected good food?????

California... hilly?!
It even has some mountains!.....I've heard!

It's a world of laughter
A world of tears
It's a world of hopes
and a world of fears
There's so much that we share
that it's time we're aware
it's a small world after all.

There is just one moon
and one golden sun
And a smile means
friendship to everyone
Though the mountains divide
and the oceans are wide
it's a small world after all.

En el mundo hay risas y dolor
Esperanzas y hay tambien temor
Mucho hay en verdad
que poder compartir
Entre la humanidad.

Muy pequeno el mundo es
Muy pequeno el mundo es
Debe haber mas hermanidad
Muy pequeno es.

Una luna hay solo hay un sol
Para todos brillan sin distincion
Y aunque muy grandes son
Las montanas y el mar
Muy pequeno el mundo es.

Au bout du Pole Nord
ou sur l'équateur
Il y a un Jean-qui-rit
Il y a un Jeab-qui-pleure
Du soleil de midi
Au soleil de minuit
On a tous le même vie.

Car le monde est tout petit
Devant le ciel on se dit
Que nous sommes des fourmis
Le monde est petit.

Au bout du Pôle Nord
Ou sur l'équateur
On a toujours l'air
De venir d'ailleurs
Mais quand on fait le tour
De nos joies, nos ennuis
On a tous la même vie!

The First Out of town review

Last Friday night I went to Hudson Theater on theater row to see a musical review called. “What If?”. Let me get right to the nitty gritty. I loved the show. I laughed more than I had at the recent Broadway revival of “Sly Fox” with Richard Dreyfus and the musical numbers were more enjoyable than all the Peter Allen songs in the recent, “The Boy From Oz”.

In the past, having only read the wonderful “What If” lyrics, it was wonderful to hear them sung by a more than capable cast of performers. Each brought a unique style and presence to the show.

The cast in alphabetical order they are: Susan Blakeslee who did a wicked Julie Andrews singing the “What If Rodgers and Hammerstein had written Assassins” and in her own voice in “A Little Lift” and “A Slight Neurotic”. Paul Haber is a seasoned performer who shined in his solo spots singing “Something” (Mr. Karp’s reply to “Nothing” from “A Chorus Line”) and “Millions of Men” and shined in the group numbers “What If Bock and Harnick Wrote A Chorus Line” and “What If Irving Berlin Wrote West Side Story” among others.

Tammy Minoff who I saw in The Goodbye Girl on Broadway and from her recordings as part of Bruce Kimmel’s rep company has blossomed in beautiful young woman with a voice to match. At Friday’s performance Bruce Kimmel treated us to a new song about wanting to be the star of the musical Annie. It was only the second time she performed it in front of the audience but it as if she had been doing it since the beginning. Ryan Rafferty the goofy bespectacled performer who wants nothing, but to sing “Don’t Rain On My Parade” even bribing musical director Jose Simbulan and asking a member of the audience before the start of act two if they new how to play. Ryan is a wonderful and engaging performer.

Finally, there is Alet Taylor who up to now I knew as Alet Oury from her recordings she has made for Bruce, Finally it was wonderful to put a face to the voice, and I was not disappointed.  I especially enjoyed “When You Are Waiting For Love”.

Bruce Kimmel has staged a fast-paced show, wrote the specialty lyrics, and as well as contributing several songs to the show. This musical revue is not a composer's greatest hits nor is Forbidden Broadway where it is one parody after. Kimmel scored with all the “What Ifs” and especially shined with the “Coming Attractions” sequence. I would love to see a couple more spread out through the evening. Jose Simbulan the musical director and pianist for the evening complimented his singers with his adept playing. Joseph McKee and Cheryl Baxter’s homage to choreographers like Jerome Robbins and Michael Bennett enhanced the evening and even had there own laughs. I cannot remember when I saw choreography get their own laughter.

I wish that I lived in LA because I would love to see the show repeatedly. The best $20 I spent in a long time.

Wow... now I finally have a song to sing at work so that my French co-workers can be equally as annoyed as my English ones :)

Don't you love how when songs get translated the exact meaning of the lyrics get "massaged".  This version in particular has some weird images... especially the "Devant le ciel on se dit/Que nous sommes des fourmis" part... cute though :)

DiT I also fold socks while I’m on the phone.  ;D Having a headset makes it easy.  Most often I do my favorite activity while on the phone, pace.  Have you ever told your sister you find her chomping annoying?

If I receive a phone call while I’m eating I give the person the option of my calling back when I’m done.  No one has ever taken me up on that.  I only call a select few people when I’m eating, the ones that also eat while on the phone with me.

Last week while waiting in line at the bank to cash a check I was on the cell phone to Keith.  The teller, very sweetly, said she would help me when I was done.  As cute as she was, and as rude as I was, I stayed on the phone explaining we were dealing with an emergency with our cat.  She was very nice about it.  I also spoke softly enough that no one could hear what I was saying and Keith waited while I talked to her. :-[

So now the truth is out.  I’m a rude person, I eat while on the phone and I use my cell phone while driving and walking.  I even have a head set for my cell phone which I don’t use very often.

LOL DR Jane, I doubt your are really rude!

Personally I don't care if someone calls me while they are eating, and I take calls while I am eating but I don't think anyone ever knew I was eating...or at least never mentioned it. I don't normally make any calls while eating, however as I like to give food my full attention! LOL!

Now I do find it rude if someone calls me and talks to me while they are watching television and they end up paying more attention to the TV show then to me who they called up! If the show was something they wanted to watch then why call me? My buddy Mark does that a lot, but I tell him it bugs me...maybe that is why he does it! LOL!

DR Jane,

Oh yes, most definitely, so rude!!! You're a riot.

Of course, it's the way callers eat (i.e., chomp) and the way they handle those car-phone conversations (radio going full blast) that turn my crank. And while I'm sure I didn't turn yours, please forgive me if I did - even if just a little.

There are worse things to do than eat and phone. I've had calls from people who are... well, use your imagination. Let's say they're calling from a small room with an echo. Multi-tasking taken to the extreme.

First rehearsal of SOMETHING'S AFOOT was fun with those not familiar with the play enjoying its surprises as we read through it. With only a cast of 10, it should be a really fun experience putting this together (sort of a Sondheim reference).

I don't "get" the annoying part for that song!
Granted, the chorus played over and over becomes tiresome, but all children songs are repetitious, non?

Now, most people refer to the RIDE but the ride is something.... moving and people tend to forget that the song is played in different arrangements and style and orchestrations to fit the "country" the boat one is in goes through, with lyrics sung in the native language...

I don't know why adults seem to be embarrassed to enjoy the ride and the song which has a naive but nice message of tolerance and humanity amongst people of the world! Quite silly in 2004, I agree, and ludicrous too!
Remember, that attraction was FIRST a ride for the UNICEF Pavilion in the New York World's Fair of 1964....

Oh well, just my two euros!

I don't see a "massaged message" in "devant le ciel on se dit que nous sommes des fourmis"!
Quite literal to me: compared to the vastness of the sky we only seem to be ants....

I do know Dear Reader Pogue would quite agree with me on that!!!! ;D

I'm relishing the silence in here now, but, every few moments, it's interrupted by the tear of a post-it note.  You wouldn't think post-it notes would need a tearing sound everytime they're used, but that's what's periodically breaking the silence.

What's going on is that Joy is proofreading my script.  Every time she makes a correction, she puts a post-it on the page.  It's nerve-racking having someone read your work.  So far, I've been the only reader.  What if it doesn't make any sense?

She already asked about a line that made no sense to her, one that references "Wheat Thins" so now I need to know: were Wheat Thins a well-known foodstuff in the early 1950s.  So much of this script needs to be "vetted" - if that's the proper term.

There's that tear again.  Arrrrgggghhh!

I happen to LIKE the ride.  It's a celebration.  Musically, it's a bit like a "theme and variation" work, deconstructing the world and then putting it all back together for the party at the end.  (Side note: only two "USA" dolls are in the entire collection, a Cowboy and Indian as part of the finale.)

AND it was sponsored by Pepsi, back in the days Joan Crawford was running the show.

Now, here's a trivia question for you, Francois, one for which I'm not sure of the answer.  Disney used AudioAnimatronics for four attractions at the 1964 World's Fair.  I remember "It's a Small World" as being the big star attraction, and the Dinosaurs (later incorporated into the Train Ride at Disneyland) as the second.  The third was "The Carousel of the Future," a GE-sponsored event, also later transferred to Disneyland (and eventually replaced with "America Sings").

What I'm not sure of is which the fourth attraction was that Disney contributed.  I'm tempted to say it was the Abraham Lincoln exhibit, for the state of Indiana, but I'm not sure.  Do you have any records or way of verifying this?

I wouldn't worry about Frontiers, BK.  The only real contribution to culture (as we know it) made by the magazine was when it picked up the full-page comic Leonard and Larry, the continuing adventures of a committed couple and their friends and families.  The comic had originally been carried by the Advocate, but a change in that magazine's staff led to their dropping the strip.  Frontiers picked up the strip, and let Tim Barela, it's creator, do his thing.

Three trade paperback collections later, the leadership at Frontiers changed.  The new leadership stopped paying Barela for his work, and then he was finally given the heave-ho, in favor of a far less clever (but nationally syndicated) strip called The Chelsea Boys.  All and all, the heave struck me as similar to one involving you, yourself.

Frontiers is one thing I do NOT miss about SoCal.
