Well, you've read the notes, you've been imbued with their special meaning, you've had you a time with the notes and now it is time to post all the livelong day and night.

The first movie animal that popped into my head was Matisse in DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS.
Of course, there's Lassie in LASSIE COME HOME with Roddy and the beautiful young Elizabeth.
And that incredible horse in THE BLACK STALLION.
And Babe.
And Cheetah, natch. I worked with one of the many Cheetahs in my Tarzan opus. He (and his doubles) were a hoot.

Good Evening!  Good Morning!

I read the rest of yesterday's posts, and I read today's notes and posts posted thus far...

It's 3:15am here on the east coast... I must get to bed...

As for animals... Hmmm...  BK - Was today's topic inpsired by your viewing of "Orca, The Killer Whale"?  ;)

*Actually, "Orca" was one of the first movies I remember seeing as a child.  And at a drive-in too.  Most of it went over my head.  Maybe I should rent it now... Hmm...

Off to Wussburgerville...

Goodnight.

Oh- How could I forget Toto?
And Old Yeller!
And Trigger.

"Old Yeller" - I remember reading the book many times when I was in grade school... That and "Sounder" too.  -Or maybe I'm just thinking of "Sounder"... Hmmm...

Wasn't I saying, "Goodnight"?

Goodnight.

Animals....well of course my favorite movie animal is Miss June Wilkinson (who now has a copy of KRITZERLAND) - but I think we are talking about another kind....of animal....

So....hmmmm....Old Yeller, of course.

There is a movie called THREE WISHES with Mr Patrick Swayze wherein he has a dog named Betty who is remarkable...in many ways...and is in fact probably enchanted.  See the movie....

Like RLP I enjoyed Cleo the basset hound (voiced by Mary Jane Croft).

Thomasina the cat is also pretty special.

Oh, and the dog in a movie called The Biscuit Eater.   That movie was nearly as sad as Old Yeller!

One last picture from our vacation.

We visited my 21 year old niece, living on her own for the first time. She was very excited that her uncle(s) came to visit that she bought a cake, which in her excitement, she dropped (if you look closely, you can see it's a bit lopsided). Oh, well. It tasted good anyway.

We spent much of yesterday out and about. It was, as PennyO said, a lovely NYC fall day. We ended our day at Footlight, always a dangerous area for a CD addict but I did come away with two purchases I wasn't expecting, Dance a Little Closer and Romance, Romance. They have been scarce as the proverbial hen's teeth and I was quite pleasantly surprised to see them in the used bin. Hoo and Ray. We then proceeded home where we had a lovely dinner of chicken stew and a green salad, finished by chocolate pudding. I then rode the exercise bike and we then watched the pentultimate episode of Two's Company. According to the listing at WLIW Channel 21, next Thursday is the last episode. They will begin running the program again from the beginning on October 14.

Some favorites have already been mentioned (Babe, Toto, Old Yeller). Also on my list is A DOG OF FLANDERS, which starred OLD YELLER'S Spike.

Though he's a TV dog, Eddie from FRASIER has to be included.

Good Morning! (again)

I finally got up early enough - well, more like I finally got up early and stayed(!) up - in order to drop my car off at the service station to get the state inspection done.  It was supposed to be done in "8", but since I was in L.A. in "8", I was not able to get the car inspected during "8".  -And now that it is "10"...  I know I have one taillight out - it just blew last week - and I'm hoping that's the worst of it.  <knock wood>

*And, boy, did I get nervous each time a cop car was in sight while I was driving around this past weekend.  The ticket for having an expired inspection sticker is not high, but it's a ticket nonetheless.

So, now I'm just waiting for the mechanic to call in a few hours...

<knock wood>

Dan-In-T has mentioned my favorite performer, Eddie the dog from Fraiser.  Actually, there were two Eddies;  first there was the dog named Moose, who was the better actor.  Moose retired and was replaced at some point during the run by one of his offspring, whose name escapes me at the mo'.  While the second Eddie was more adept at tricks, he was not the accomplished actor his father was.

Well, since I was up and about, I went ahead and walked over to Carytown to do some early morning window shopping and grab some breakfast at Ukrop's.  Today's breakfast selection was "S.O.B.".  I would have had "S.O.S.", but since they didn't have any "S"s, I got the "S" on a "B"(iscuit).  -Which is what I prefer anyway if given the choice.

Then I headed over to Starbuck's to get some coffee - I'm using up a Gift Card.  And then it was a walk up to the Jean-Jacques where I picked up a croissant au chocolat and a croissant d'almonde (???) for consumption later today.

And now I'm here watching the Today show and posting here on HHW.

In a little bit - maybe after a nap - I will be cleaning out one of my bedroom closets.  I'm not looking forward to it.  But it's something I need to do after finding the mice - well the "evidence" of mice last week.  I noticed some more droppings last night when I got in from Norfolk, so...  At least most of my stuff on the floor in that closet is in big plastic bins.  -My other closet has me music which is stored in sturdy (I hope) cardboard boxes.  I'll find what I find... or don't find.

Then tomorrow I will hit the other closet... Then under the bed... Etc., etc., etc...  I really want to get a good cleaning done before I leave for Houston next Monday (for four weeks).

A bit of my sadistic side has been coming out when thinking about how to deal with the mice.  Should I use the poisonous bait?  The old-fashioned snap traps?  The new-fangled "clip" traps?  Glue traps?  The electronic things?  Or a combination of the above?

What I'm hoping is that now that the rains and storms have died down for the season, is that the mice have returned to their "space" under and outside the house... or wherever they live.  Again, we shall see...

A few years ago Moose/Eddie made an appearance at the Canadian National Exhibition. My friend Nancy and Dwight, her beau at the time, gave a contribution to the Humane Society in return for the privilege of posing with Eddie. For several years you'd walk into Nancy's apartment and be greeted by a framed portrait of her, Dwight, and Eddie. Dwight has since been X-acto-ed out of the photo - now it's just Nancy and Eddie. They make a cute couple.

OHH!!!!...

While having dinner yesterday between shows at Harry's BBQ with the other two keyboard players, I noticed a poster in the window of the restaurant.  While reading it "backwards", I thought it was for a production of ANNIE - at least from the look of the logo.  But what I was reading backwards was definitely not ANNIE.

Once outside, I noticed the poster said ANDREW.  And then in smaller print underneath the title, it said "Based on the musical ANNIE".  WHAT!?!??!  And the picture of Miss(?) Hannigan, Daddy Warbucks and the orphans is... well, I guess priceless.  It was apparently produced by some independent youth group theatre in Norfolk.  The name of the group is actually the first name of the producer/director.

Well, after all three of us had a good laugh at the poster - too bad we had just missed the final matinee! - I mentioned that I would love to have that poster.  Jokingly.  Well, one of the other pianists went back inside the restaurant to ask the manager if he could take the poster out of the window, and a few minutes later he handed it to me.

It is just sooooo wrong.  I'm hoping to scan at least the picture so that I can post it here.  Truly, it is just sooooo wrong.

*Of course, no where on the poster was there a mention of MTI, Martin Charnin nor Charles Strouse.  Hmmm... ;)

UGH!  -Just saw the local news round up...  Apparently on Saturday night, there was a man holding people up at gun point - with a machine gun! - just three blocks from my apartment!  And it's a very heavy trafficked intersection - both with foot and car traffic!?!?

I guess I might not be walking to and from rehearsal tonight.

My favorite has been mentioned:  "Eddie" from Frasier.  I was also quite fond of "Max" (I think it was Max) from Mad About You.

I also have to chime in (as did last night's west coast denizens) about how much I enjoyed Desperate Housewives.  I always enjoy Felicity Huffman, and have been a Nicolette Sheridan fan since "Knots Landing."  But I enjoyed not only them, but their castmates, the direction, the writing, it's campiness, and its ability to laugh at itself to some degree.  Though I was not anticipating any sort of a "mystery" aspect to it, I enjoyed that as well.....

And it just goes to prove something I have said for years:  Men are pigs.

I also had a celebrity encounter with Eddie/Moose some years ago when he was making a personal ("doggienal?") appearance in Boulder. DD, a child at the time, was very excited about meeting her favorite TV dog. He was indeed cute and DD scored a pawtographed 8x10. I remember he did one trick which really impressed me. He "fake-peed" on command -- lifted his leg and went thourgh all the motions without actually doing the deed.

Sad about Janet Leigh. She was, I think, an underrated actress. She had a wonderful natural quality -- and was, of course, lovely to look at and quite sexy in a very "wholesome" way. And she was certainly in some great movies. PSYCHO, TOUCH OF EVIL, MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. Not too shabby. Plus, I've never heard anyone say a bad word about her personally -- which is an achievement in this crazy business.

SInce I love THE THIN MAN movies, I'd have to pick Asta as my favorite movie animal even though he made oter movies than those (BRINGING UP BABY, for example).

Toto in THE WIZARD OF OZ was also very memorable.

Yes, I read about janet Leigh this morning and was very surprised. Sorry to read that. She made a reasonably OK Rosie in BYE BYE BIRDIE, but I'd still rather have had Chita Rivera's version on film.

My favorite has been mentioned:  "Eddie" from Frasier.  I was also quite fond of "Max" (I think it was Max) from Mad About You.

The dog's name in the show was "Murray".  I really enjoyed the relationship between Murray and their dogwalker played by Hank Azaria.

As for "Bye Bye, Birdie", I think everyone suffered in the film of that one.  Leigh might have been brilliant if Rosie hadn't been so severely rewritten.  Even Van Dyke's Albert lost most of his luster in deference to Ann-Margret's "Kim."

Maybe, some day, we'll get a legitimate film of this great show.

I think "Eddie" on "Frasier" probably had the best run of any animal star since Lassie.  Eddie was always hilarious and appropriate to the goings-on in every episdoe.

Toto, of course, is an icon.  But when I really look at him in the film, he looks like an unkempt, ratty little dog.

Good morning, all!  I'm moving rather slowly this morning, I'm embarassed to say, but I notice it didn't stop me from saying it.

I thought "Desperate Housewives" was a hoot.  It brought back so many memories of the suburbia of my 50s childhood:

Connie & Donnie's alcoholic mother and her numerous one-night boyfriends.
The mysterious suicide of the mother of one of my friends in 5th grade; my memory is that he found her hanging in the garage on returning from school.
The hot married bodybuilder across the street who moved away after his affair with either the neighbor lady or my mother (the gossip on this is too indefinite but highly fascinating) came to light.
The day Chris Rothermel, my brother Tom, and I discovered the half-burnt pornographic polaroids of Mr & Mrs Hardy in their back yard barbecue pit.

Some day I'll write a book, but Dear Friend BK's are a tough act to follow!

Everyone's scored high on the animal star listings before me, and I'd forgotten some I loved, like Asta and Cleo.  I guess my favorite has to be Old Yeller, because the trauma of his death still prevents me from watching the film again.  I feel the same about the moving AU REVOIR LES ENFANTS.

Speaking of decent versions of BYE BYE BIRDIE, the Jason Alexander-Vanessa Williams version came out on DVD a couple of weeks ago, and I ordered it. I think it must have been out of print the day it was released because they had to back order it!

Nope, not a great version marred by the miscasting of Jason Alexander and substandard work by Chyna Phillips, but so much of it is right, and it's certainly more faithful to the original than the 1963 film version, so that's why I wanted it.

I also saw Desperate Housewives last night.  My fav was definitely Teri Hatcher.  Marcia Cross was a nut job! (although I also like her a lot, and enjoyed her very much last season on Everwood).

I'm not sure if I loved the show as much as the others who posted about it.  But we shall see.  It sometimes takes me a bit of time to get into new shows.

And to add insult to injury, the "croissants" I bought this morning turned out to be more bread than pastry.   Eh!  They almost tasted like they took standard bread dough and treated it like croissant dough - rolling butter between the layers.  They tasted OK, but definitely not a flaky, layered, croissant.  Maybe they just needed to rise some more.  I'm tempted to go back there and complain.. or at least ask what the problem was/is.

For a guy who loves critters, I've never much loved critter movies.  Probably because I a secret softie and would find myself weeping uncontrollably when Old Yeller (a movie I've never seen) got shot or something.  There is still a convention in movies where if you want to make the villain really despicable..it doesn't matter how many humans he kills, have him kill a dog.

That said.  I remember being very touched by GREYFRIARS BOBBY ( a true story...it was on the bottom half of a double bill I saw as a kid).  SEABISCUIT was pretty effective.  I've always been amazed at how Johnny Weissmuller rode Rhinos and Hippos (As chimps get older, they get ornery...Story has it that Johnny had a pair of brass knuckles to rap the Cheeta up the side of the head when he got out of line.  Maureen O' Sullivan also said the chimp adored Johnny and was very jealous of Maureen.)  Bruce already mentioned the martini-swilling Neil from Topper.  I was always fond of Bugs Bunny & Daffy Duck.

Denny Miller does have a website and is hawking his book on it.

No one at the food site I regularly visit has come up with any suggestions for finding Beef Wellington in Los Angeles.

Sorry, BK, but it seems you're stuck with McD's.

And it just isn't the same.  The pastry for a Beef Wellington isn't supposed to be dotted with sesame seeds.

See... Now that wasn't that bad was it?

One closet down, one more to go.

Not too bad.  There were actually a lot less droppings than I was expecting.  A lot less.  :)  And I also found the mouse hole in the inside corner of the closet.  I shall be heading to the hardware store to pick up some of that expanding foam stuff so that I can fill the hole in and block the access.  Hopefully, that's the only access to my room.

Right now, I'm just waiting for the floor to dry.  I went ahead and Mr. Clean'd the floor in the closet and the surrounding area just to be efficient and hygienic.  It is sort of amazing looking at all the stuff sitting on the floor in front of me.  Who knew that that closet was so big and could hold so much stuff?   ;)

I've also called over to my mechanic.  Car should be ready by 5:00 - and I didn't detect any "gloom and doom" in his voice.  :)

<knock wood>

-Sorry DR SWW.

DR Jane will probably not see this since she's in transit, but the NY Wednesday Fun Club (also known as the HHW East Coast Gang) has been confirmed for Wednesday, October 6th at 5pm at Barrymore's, 267 W 45th St. (212-391-8400) near the corner of 8th Avenue. The reservation is for 6 people (DRs Jane, Larry, PennyO, Noel, me and our DR in absentia, Anthony) and it's in my name (McLaughlin). See ya there!

Got to run off and read about 25 pages of boring theatre history stuff (French baroque, yippee), but I wanted to respond to a few things from yesterday.

Thanks for the compliment, François!  I've never broken anyone's legs though, and I don't think I've broken any hearts--maybe just a hairpin crack here and there.  ;)

Elmore--I thought about you when I was reading the Where's Charley? Goodspeed reviews!  How did the production go for you??  I read that Noah Racey was very charming.

I guess my favorite animal performance was from Toto, in The Wizard of Oz.

Speaking of animals, I saw something that made me cry today.  There was a cat lying next to the sidewalk.  It looked like it was sleeping or in repose, but it's eyes were open and it was dead.  Things like that just break my heart.

Animal performances/performers:

The horse in "Black Beauty" with Mickey Rooney

Benji

Toto

Does anyone remember a movie about a dog that gets very large (because of a growth formula) called "Digby:  the Biggest Dog In the World (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069974/)?"  It probably wasn't very good, but I saw it as a kid, so it was a lot of fun to me.

definitely Eddie from FRASIER

And ANY movie with The Muppets!! ;) ;D

For Maya...and for Panni, and Laura, and Jane, and...all of us who love cats:

CAT HEAVEN

by Cynthia Rylant

The way to Cat Heaven is a field of sweet grass
where crickets and butterflies play.

A cat may be late in getting to Heaven . . .
there's so much fun on the way!
But an angel will wait
at the yellow front door,
wait til a kitty
comes home.

And when she arrives,
he'll give her a kiss
and some milk
in a bowl all her own.

There are trees
in Cat Heaven,
trees made just for cats,
trees growing
so green and so high.

But no one gets stuck in a tree
anymore --
if a cat wants down,
she will fly!

And oh the toys,
kitty toys everywhere,
thousands and thousands
go by.

There are buttons and baubles
and small cotton mice --
there is catnip afloat
in the sky!

There are angels,
of course,
with soft angel laps
where kitties can purr
loud and strong.

The angels will rub
kitties' noses and ears
and sing them
a Cat Heaven song.

And when cats are hungry,
there's God's kitchen counter
all covered with
white kitty dishes,
full of tuna and salmon
and mounds of sardines,
and wonderful little pink fishes.

The cats in Cat Heaven
are so loved and spoiled
God lets them all
lie on his bed . . .
He walks in His garden
with a good black book
and a kitty
asleep on His head.

Then when a cat needs,
she may just simply ponder
and watch the blue world deep and wide . . .

She will watch the old house
where she once lived and wandered,
and the people who loved her inside.

All cats love Heaven,
they know the way there,
they know where
the angel cats fly.

They'll run past the stars
and the moon and the sun . . .
. . . to curl up with God in the sky.

Bruce, you don't want to hear about all the tests I had today.  They did go well.  More to come tomorrow. The people at the study are all very nice.

It was fun making a friend to spend time with this evening.  I have yummy leftovers but I don't think there is a frig in my room.  I might snack a little bit more before going to bed.

My cold sitting in the lobby at the computer.  It is cold in my room.  This hotel, which I shall not return to, has central heating.  Since the weather is nice during the day the heat is turned off.  It might have been nice if I had been told that before booking the room.  Even nicer would be if I had been informed not to turn on the heat in my room as it only blows cold air from the pipes.  So last night I made the room very chilly and couldn't get to sleep.  To make up for my complaints of freezing all night I have been given a complimentary breakfast.  Wish I really wanted to eat first thing in the morning before my next test.

The best thing about this hotel is the sncak machine.  It sells Austin Zoo Animals which I haven't been able to find for the last four years.  I had them for breakfast and lunch today.  I shall buy more to snack on during my train trip to NY tomorrow.

Ben I did see your message.

Good Evening!

Car Update:  Well, they found three things that needed to be fixed.  Two small things, and one thing that could go either way - financially speaking.  I'll know tomorrow what the status is.  Thankfully, every place I need to get to tomorrow is in an easy walking distance - as it was today.

And it was a great day to walk.  A beautiful late summer/early fall day.

Closet Update:  I got it all cleaned out, and I just put everything away.  And I even managed to consolidate a few bags and boxes at the same time!

I left the lights off while I was at rehearsal, and I came home to no "evidence" of mice, so... I think sealing up the hole in the corner helped - and will help - to keep the visitors away.

Rehearsal Update:  Tonight was the first orchestra rehearsal for The Producers.  Tour 1 - The Max Company - is playing here this week in Richmond.  Surprisingly, they're only travelling with the drummer and the keyboard player.  I thought at least the lead trumpet or the percussionist (since the percussion set-up includes a typewriter) would travel with them too, but not in this case.  The orchestra sounds great.  A bunch of them had played Tour 2 - The Leo Company (the one with Alet (Oury) Taylor's husband) - earlier this year in Norfolk, and that helped a lot.  There's a lot of music in the show, and a lot of notes.

I just audited tonight.  Sat back and listened and marked my score up.  The part seems a lot less daunting now.  Most of it is just rhythm - boom-chick, boom-chick - with some "exposed" licks here and there - mainly sound effects.  I have a one-on-one coaching/learning session with the assistant conductor/keyboard player in the morning at 10:00, and we should be able to get through the whole book with no major problems.  The rest of the orchestra will also be in rehearsal at that time finishing up the rest of the show - we stopped tonight right before "Springtime for Hitler".  Then sound check at 3:00, and then show at 8:00 - which I'm auditing.  I won't be playing until the Saturday matinee.

Unfortunately, it looks like Alan Ruck who plays Leo on this tour will be out this week due to illness.  Ah, well.  I was looking forward to seeing him in the role.  I've seen him a few times on Broadway - including his debut in Biloxi Blues with Matthew Broderick.  -And he would go on to play the best friend in "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" opposite Broderick again.

Well, I'm tired and I need to get to bed...

Goodnight.

Speaking of cats...

Charles and John, the owners of Cafe Zeus, were telling us that the kittens of Miss Kitty, who were born just below the steps leading from the restaurant to the patio, decided to take their first steps out into the world right before Charles and John had to head off for the Celebrity Chef's Brunch Sunday.  Miss Kitty was a little freaked, of course, but the kittens all did fine, and cozied up to John like he was their long lost daddy.

When the kittens are all weaned, Miss Kitty and the kittens are all heading to the vets.  While they're a safeguard against vermin (and there are absolutely no mice or roaches at Cafe Zeus), it's the most responsible way to care for the little ones.
