Title: THE FALL OF DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME
Post by: bk on October 25, 2003, 01:01:01 AM
Good morning.  It's the weekend - let's see if we can keep up our incredible and amazing posts, shall we?  If you haven't read the notes, do so, as we've got things to celebrate and discuss.

Yay! First post post-BK!! Huzzah!

Read last night's late post to find out what's going on with me. It's a sordid tail, of that you can be sure.

(And, yes, I know I spelled TALE incorrectly...)

Ummm, BK...
Thanks much for the birthday wishes, but the handy dandy new HHW calendar will show you that my birthday is in fact TOMORROW, the 26th, not today! :)

Calendars like this one that run Monday-Sunday rather than Sunday-Saturday always screw me up as well.

Yes, the closing song from Taken was bad, and the girl who was the villian at the end was terribly acted, I kept thinking the only reason she was killed by the aliens was that they would need her for the series (kind of like Dr. Smith in Lost In Space).

What a GREAT question, and since I just finished Everything Was Possible about the making of Follies, I have even been thinking about this.

I would love to have been there from beginning to end of The Pajama Game.

Because it is so funny, because of the personalities involved including Mr Bob Fosse, Mr George Abbott, and Mr Hal Prince.  Not to mention Ms Shirley MacClaine, Ms Janice Paige, and Mr Eddie Foy, Jr!

My second choice would be ANY Stephen Sondheim musical, but especially Company!

Good morning everyone!  So many posts!

Danise - so sorry to hear about your loss.

Jason - I sympathize with your mouse problem.  I lived in my last apartment for three years and had a recurring, often constant influx of them.  I'm not afraid of them alive but it just grossed me out to no end to have to deal with trapping and killing them.  So keeping the apartment mouse-proofed was very high-maintenance, because the little suckers would always find a way to chew new holes in the walls.  (If one was chewing that loudly I would think it was because it was stuck somewhere and trying to get in/out.  Hopefully out.)  I just got a cat not too long ago, so I'm hoping if any mice are lurking around my new home, they will be discouraged from entering.  Although the cat seems kind of lazy so far.   :P  Good luck.

I really have no idea about today's question - I will have to think about that one.

Thank you to the karma fairy for the point, btw (by the way in Internet lingo).  :)

Happy Birthday a day early Jed

Well, who says you can't have two birtday celebrations. Not me.

Jason, sorry to hear about your mouse problem. We used to have a problem (mainly because a crazy lady in another apartment collects and brings refuse into her apartment - don't ask we've tried to get her out but to no avail). We seem to have mouse-proofed the apartment pretty well, but about a year and a half ago when we put down some tiles in the kitchen, we had to remove a piece of mouse proofing for a while. That was all it took. We didn't see the little bugger come in, but that night we had a mouse. We put out the traps, but this one actually escaped one afternoon a couple of days later when Anthony opened the apartment door. He (the mouse) must have heard it and he dashed across the hall and out the door and fell down one flight (he had gone through a slot on the railing. He then ran into the downstairs neighbors apartment. At the time she had a gap between her apartment door and the floor, large enough for Mr. Mouse to slip in. She screamed cause she saw him come in but he hid himself right away. She had a cat though so Mr. Mouse's days were numbered.

Off to see Wilder tonight at Playwrights Horizons. It's a new musical starring Mr. John Cullum.

TOTD (Topic of the Day in Internet Lingo)

Gosh, so many to choose from. Since one of my absolute all-time favorites musicals is one mos people would not choose, I think I would like to be with the Sondheim company as they put together Pacific Overtures. I think this show is brilliant. Someone in a Tree is, in my humble opinion, an incredible, beautiful and great song.

Since I'm about to read Mr. Ted Chapin's book, I think I would also like to be around helping out at Follies. Another show to see being created would be Pal Joey.

That's it for now. Time for breakfast and the New York Times on this sunny but cool day in NYC. It sure ain't no 95 degrees here on the upper east coast.

Hey people!  Okay I was about to check yesterday's notes first (since I thought BK had said that he would be posting later). But when I was about to check them, I saw that the notes were in fact up. And since I don't want any bad karma, I just opened another window and read the notes first.

See I can be trained!

First DR RonP asked about how to use the smilies.  Okay I'll try.  The site Joy gave us is
http://www.clicksmilies.com (http://www.clicksmilies.com)

You go there and choose the smiley you want (there are many categories).  You will see that whichever one you click on, that code will appear below. You just take that code and put it here (it comes with the image thingies already in it). I hope that makes sense. There are some really great ones.

DR RonP also wrote about Survivor (yesterday):
Quote
Jennifer:  I may turn be totally wrong about this, but I believe Rupert's outrage is a result of learning that he was "lied to" by Jon., who uses his comedic bent to take attention away from his vast inadequacies.  He had Rupert's friendship and then betrayed it.  I'd say that was major.  Only the passage of a week will show us what really happened.

I have no idea what Trish's grief was about.  I've not seen any "straddling" behavior from Rupert that would indicate he was partial to the other side.  What gave her the right to stand in judgment of Rupert and to try turn everyone against him (which it seemed she had done)?

I think she had a FEAR that Rupert had the respect of the other side and that a coming merger would give him a huge advantage with both tribes, which is true.  But it backfired on her.  I know Jon fears him.  Jon ought to fear all of them.

They never showed us, did they, how the tide was turned from Rupert to Trish?

It's only a game show, though, and yes, they manipulate what we see.

I see what you're saying. But Sandra lied to Trish, is she screaming at her?  That's what the game is about. Rupert should not be screaming like an idiot just because the others were smart enough to realize he needed to go.  Trish was right IMO. Rupert carries the team. They do whatever he says. He bosses them around. But more than that, he acts like he owns the place.

It bothered me that he couldn't have cared less about Sean. Yet when he (Rupert) found out about Trish's plan, he went to Sean and was all buddy buddy, saying crap like, "let's vote her out" and "you and me till the end".

I'm sorry but Rupert lied. He's playing the game. So what gives him the right to freak when others do the same.

I think Trish realized how powerful Rupert had become.  And he obviously did have sway with the other tribe. You saw how he convinced the guy to take the crappy rice. And you saw how much the other tribe worshipped him.

I have loved Rupert in the past. But I was not happy with what I saw of him this week.

I thought Everything Was Possible was sensational. I loved it from beginning to end and wept at certain passages as aspects of the show which I loved came into being. Too bad all the great classic shows don't have an almost day-by-day recording as this one now has. Wouldn't give anything for this book and look forward to reading it again in a few months.

I'd love to have the same kind of thing attached to ANYONE CAN WHISTLE. Since it was a notorious bomb (with a fabulous score), I think the herculean efforts to pull it together would be fascinating to read about. Some of it can be found in Zadan's Sondheim and Co., but not in the detail that Ted Chapin have us in his book.

Happy Early Birthday, DR Jed!

Btw, re: the whole picture thing.

I asked yesterday on the tech board how to include a picture. There has to be an easier way (than editing your profile and including it there).  I really just want to post my picture once. And I don't really want it to be in some file.

Wouldn't you think there would be a way to just copy and paste it in the message?

Okay everyone I'm off now. Have a good Saturday!

And BK your title today was misleading. I was wondering if the time already changed and I missed it :)

I meant to mention the one DVD release this coming week I'm really looking forward to: The Sherlock Holmes Collection featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in their first four B-movie Holmes films for Universal. The films have been remastered, and reviews on the new transfers have them sounding next to wonderful.

For the record, the first four in this first set are Sherlock Holmes and the Voice of Terror, Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon, Sherlock Holmes Faces Death, and Sherlock Holmes in Washington.

The next four are slated for the end of November. I just hope this release will also include the two 20th Century Fox-A pictures that Rathbone and Bruce made in 1939: Hound of the Baskervilles and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. These were beautifully done in period and are among the best Sherlock Holmes films ever made.

Ben and Ant look so butch in that picture.  And of course, they ARE butch.  I expected them to sweep up in their arms and go galloping off  on a horse!
Jason, those little sonar boxes you plug in really do work on mice.  Someone else here once suggested they worked on roaches too, but I only know from mice.  We started using one at the store becasue the restaurant next door seemed to get critters, and we didn't want them strying our way.  Since we got two of those boxes, all is well.

I'm still figuring out all this new fangled technology.

We don't observe DST around here, so everything changes, but we stay the same.  ;D

I agree with DR MattH - Everything Was Possible is a wonderful read and a great chronicle of a putting on a show!  I had to get out my FOLLIES Cast Album last night and listen to it again.

DRMattH - I saw Dorothy Collins do MY FAIR LADY here in Indy some years before and she was terrific.  Not the thinnest of Eliza's but terrific!  I may have a picture if you would like me to post it.  Where is it?  Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

DR Jason - I heard something last night and immediately thought of a Mouse!!!

(http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/sprachlos/speechless-smiley-006.gif)

Turns out it was my doggie who didn't want my door closed after dark.

Miss Bette Davis is in an episode of "The Virginian" this morning, and it is strange to see Margo Channing on a horse!

DR Ben please let me know the details about the WILDER musical.  Sounds very interesting.  We bought some costumes for SOUTH PACIFIC last summer and our Emil discovered that his costumes had previously been worn/made for another Emil:  Mr John Cullum!

Saturday!  Time to watch DVD's and hope for exciting mail!

DR TD - email me your snail mail address.  I have something for you!

DR Jason - DR Kerry is so correct.  As I wrote on the old board - the electronic plug in boxes work.

Just get a couple for your apartment and no more problems.  Really!  You can get them at any hardware store, I am sure.

Good morning, DRs!  I am here at work, but in 3 hours or so, I will be at...

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]THE KENNEDY CENTER IN THE AUDIENCE OF BOUNCE[/move]

Yes, the day has finally come, and I promise to post a review on Sunday night or Monday.  I say Sunday or Monday because I will be sleeping over at my friend Kate's house...she is a fellow Sondhead and we're going to see the show together.

Hmmm...if I could go back in time to witness the creation and rehearsals of any musical, I really would not hesitate to say Gypsy.  To me, it really is the greatest musical of all time, pure and simple.  I would love to see first-hand Merman plunging into her greatest role, and Jerry Robbins' passionate vision, and Jule Styne discussing "Some People" lyrics with Sondheim.  I mean, I would NOT have liked to have seen the fabled arguments between Steve and the Merm, but I would love to see everything else.  My second place choice would be Follies, and I can't wait to buy Everything Was Possible!

A very happy un-birthday to DR Jed!  It is my very happy un-birthday too!  :P

Emily--thanks for pasting Swishy's e-mail!  I'm glad to hear all is well with her...she really is a very smart and level-headed 16 year old.

Jason--I've never had a rodent infestation (and never will, God willing), but I do sympathize!  Hope the problem improves!

Ben--I also want to hear about Wilder...I've heard really good things about it.

Finally....

~~~~~~~Flirty vibes to DRs Mark Bakalor and Jed~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning!  Good Yawning!
I hope everyone has taken a gander at the note DR Swishy Sarah  sent me via msn yesterday to post on this here site.
She misses you all veeeerrrrryyyy much! :)
Guess what?  It snowed here yesterday!  Little tiny flurry flakes - but snow nonetheless.  With Daylight Savings Time starting soon, I hereby declare the start of the Canadian Winter.  Let's hope we all survive it... (now THAT would be a kick ass Mark Burnett Show SURVIVOR: IQUALUIT)
The Topic of the Day:
I know all of you think I'm going to say a JRB show for the question - but all of you are WRONG!  I mean, from what I understand he's not a very nice guy... why would I waste my trip back in time to be surrounded by a pretentious meanie?  Nope... I'll just listen to TL5Y ad nauseum and never think about the composer's rotten personality.
Instead, I think I'd like to go back and be involved in the creation of West Side Story.  Unless Leonard Bernstein turns out to be a mean kitten-eater or something.  Please don't tell me if Bernstein was mean - you're ruining my favorite composers!!!!!!! :D
Talk to you all later - I need to get my number of posts up!
Hmmm... what with now knowing everyone's astrological sign on the boards - I thought I should check out my (as a Scorpio's) compatibility with the other signs.  Tell me where all of you fit! :)
Scorpio - October 21 – November 21
Most Compatible:
Pisces and Cancer
Somewhat:
Sagittarius, Capricorn, Virgo and Libra
Least:
Aquarius - detached and impersonal
Taurus - clash of wills
Leo - overly dramatic and arrogant
Neutral:
Aries and Gemini
Allow me then, DR LC, to recommend to you the OBC recording of On the Town.  A female taxi driver is one of the major roles in the show, and she sings one of my favorite novelty songs, "I Can Cook, Too!"  Although the film and its soundtrack have their charms, most of the score of the Broadway show was jettisoned in the making of the movie, and "I Can Cook, Too!", along with a good deal of other sublime music that Leonard Bernstein wrote for the stage version, cannot be heard in the movie.
As for musicals, I am not sure if it is limited to stage productions or if it can include films...if it is a stage production then I would choose FLOWER DRUM SONG...if it can include a musical film then I would choose..hmmmm...FLOWER DRUM SONG.
LC I've lived here for 23 years and in those years I can count on one hand and still have fingers left over the number of times I've had a female cab driver. I have, I think, in all that time, had two. We commented on it both times and they were both very pleasant about it, acknowledging the rare bird quality.
And, yes, get a copy of Of the Town. It's a great show. The movie is a whole different thing. I like the movie but it's not the show. Most of the score, in standard Hollywood form, was cut. The score is filled with little treasures that you won't see if you watch the movie w/Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Betty Garrett, Ann Miller, Jules Munshin, Vera-Ellen. It is great to see Miss Betty Garrett, though. I love Nancy Walker but Betty Garrett is a joy.
BK, I know it's not Ask BK Day, but did you ever see the 1971 Los Angeles production of Forum with Nancy Walker? She got to sing another song (Farewell). I know she declined to come to NY when it moved. I would have loved to see her as Domina. She was replaced in NY by Lizabeth Pritchett. Anyway, that's enough theatre history. I need to get to the tailor and have some pants taken up. I'm SHORT. I wish I could buy off the rack and have something fit!!!
Well, that calendar really messed with my mind.  I've never seen a calendar that goes Monday to Sunday therefore it totally messed with my mind.
Jennifer: I'm not sure why posting an image within your post is a problem, but it probably has something to do with the size of the image (pixels) which Mark and Russell both talk about at the tech board.  For example, should I want to post an image, I go down to the attach box (you have to not be in the "quick reply" place, I browse my computer until I find an image, I find said image, I open said image, said image address automatically shows up in the attach box and I post.
Oh yes, don't you know I'm being sneaky. I am being VERY sneaky, but it's ok, because my Algebra HW is done for now. They're all out at soccer games, and so I'm on my little sister's computer.
I miss you all! And I've caught up on all of the posts (It took 5 BILLION years, which I suppose is a good thing!), and Craig, you are very very cool. Very very thoughtful and very very cool. I have Karma and I've been Errant and Truant for days! I feel so loved! You coined a great word yesterday, Karmalicious. I'm using that now. I am officially Karmalicious Swishy.
I can't stay for long because I need to go and get some things for the dance tonight, and then I must get my hair pretty-fied, but I'll try and get back tomorrow sometime. I'm thinking I could start getting on during lunch at school...but it would have to be every other day, because I have to go to Math Lab during some lunches. We'll see.
Laryngitis sucks. I have absolutely no voice at all. I can't even whisper. I am officially mute! Mute Karmalicious Swishy. About to go out on the town, and she can't say a word. *sigh*
I really can't think of anything to say...Merci Beaucoup to Emily for posting my long message last night... I love the new Juliana's Journals! I miss you guys! Ummm....
What show would I love to have been around for from the beginning of its inception?
RENT
if only to be able to say, "Jonathan, you're looking a little under the weather today.  Why don't you go to the doctor?  And get a third opinion!!"  Are we allowed to interact with history?
Otherwise, I would choose Merrily We Roll Along AND B o u n c e
Who wouldn't want to be part of the show that broke up the Prince/Sonheim partnership as well as the show that brought them back together (well, at least for now)?
 So it's Saturday, and I'm definately in a "What is it, fish?" mood. The beginnings of a new friendship/relationship are so taxing on the brain, I'll tell you!  Must get out and AWAY from the computer.  I may have to go to the mall (EEEK)    :o
The one show I'd would have been like to be around during it's rehearsal period would have to be "Sunset Blvd" just to see how the score changed and how the actors adapted to the set - oh, I did mean the American Premiere if "Sunset" not the London.  Will check in later.
Jason, you little mouse, you. I think all the mice in New York have read your post because as I was out and about doing errands, I was in CVS (a drugstore on the east coast - is it anywhere else?). What to my wondering eyes should appear but
A MOUSE
The little critter ran from under one counter to another. I think they are out warning all their little mouse cousins and aunts and uncles and brothers and sisters, etc., etc., etc. (A King and I reference) to beware that apartment in Brooklyn! The question now is, can I go back to my local CVS without worrying about a mouse in the products. Oh, well, at least it wasn't the R word. Then I would have left the store post-haste.
The first show that came to my mind
(to observe from creation to finish)
is The Most Happy Fella.
Yesterday, I was describing it to my college students (and we'd earlier talked about finding the sex in any song): 1956 show in which a bride willfully has sex with a man who is not her husband on her wedding night and later tells the much older object of her affections that she wants to be with him "just as close to me as I possibly can... like a woman loves a man"
How my favorite songwriter, Frank Loesser, managed to put this on stage (in the year of my parents' wedding) and make that bride completely sympathetic is a miracle I would have liked to have witnessed every step of the way.
There's a wonderful CD with some cut songs from The Most Happy Fella.  That first scene in the diner used to go on forever!
Happy Birthday, Jed!
TOD:  On the successful musical front, I think Sweeney Todd would have been interesting to sit in on, creatively.  For "Oh-My-Gawd-What-Were-They-Thinking", I'd have to go for Merrily We Roll Along.  Hey, these shows were written back to back!  I could just rent a nearby apartment to stay at for the whole shebang (and probably get a good rate, compared to today's prices)!
You miss a few days, and just look what happens! So much has passed.
I would like to have been present at the many incarnations of Assassins, to find out how the Oswald scene, in particular, was written. Not to mention to be in on the many trials and tribulations in the move to Broadway.
I recently saw The Secret in the Wings, the new Mary Zimmerman play. It's an adaptation of some less well known fairy tales. It is certainly very dark, but it is full of beautiful images. I highly recommend it to anyone in the Chicago area!
I have the CD that DR Noel mentioned, with the original opening scene of The Most Happy Fella. It is fascinating to see how much inferior material has been thrown out. Loesser was a true genius.
BK - When you were describing the new board, didn't you indicate there would be a separate track (so to speak) for those responding to the TOPIC ONLY? I, for one, would appreciate the focus as I don't have a great deal of time to read every post (which sometimes has the feel of a chat board).
TOPIC: I've read several books on the making of different musicals and it's always left me disheartened--all the high emotion, backstabbing, hurt feelings, firings and missed commuications. If I sat in on the creation of them from the beginning, I might even be more disappointed. So, in the end, I'd probably pass just so I could hold onto my illusions (ah, such an idealist is she!) . BUT--if this wasn't an issue with me, I would probably pick these:
1. SHOWBOAT - For its landmark departure and the decisions that had to be made to really come up with something different.
2. THE MUSIC MAN - To witness firsthand how a show that is pure inspiration flies to success.
3. A CHORUS LINE - Wasn't this the first musical that was developed through workshops? The process would be fascinating.
4. SWEENEY TODD - To answer this question: How do you take a dark story like this and make it into a musical that won't completely gross out an audience?
5. GYPSY - Just to see Ethel Merman at work.
6. FOLLIES - Just to see Michael Bennett work his choreographic magic. DITTO Jerome Robbins for WEST SIDE STORY and THE KING AND I.
DR Maya - Take a listen to Barbara Cook's rendition of "I Can Cook Too!" She really nails it and the Wally Harper arrangement is fantastic.
Hmmm... what with now knowing everyone's astrological sign on the boards - I thought I should check out my (as a Scorpio's) compatibility with the other signs.  Tell me where all of you fit! :)
Scorpio - October 21 – November 21
Most Compatible:
Pisces and Cancer
Somewhat:
Sagittarius, Capricorn, Virgo and Libra
Least:
Aquarius - detached and impersonal
Taurus - clash of wills
Leo - overly dramatic and arrogant
Neutral:
Aries and Gemini
Oompityfratz years ago, der Brucer and I were asked to put together an astrology program for use as a fundraiser for a gay softball team I was part of at the time.  The notion that was pitched to us was "Astrology and Matchmaking," at which point the fellow who pitched the idea just drifted off with nothing left to contribute.
Anal retentive blokes that we are, we couldn't just copy down which signs matched with which other signs and let it go at that.  No, what der Brucer and I did was much more complicated.  Der Brucer took an existing astrology program, which wasn't very good, and broke it down to it's basic maths for the positioning of the planets and whatever.  He then was able to rebuild the program, making it more efficient and faster running.  Der Brucer is handy doing things like that.
Meanwhile, I gathered up something like four or five different books on astrology, and compared what they said about the different planets in aspect to each other, and what affect the signs had the planets as they travelled through the skies.  I then wrote my own comments, which der Brucer then worked into the programming that he had done.  All in all, it was a fairly good astrology program when we were done.
One interesting point that we found was that it isn't really the sun signs that designate who is compatible with whom, but the combination of rising signs.  In other words, what people we get along with/don't care for/are hot to trot for has to do with the hour we were born, rather than the month of the year.  This becomes worthless information, however, when dealing with people who don't know the hour of their birth, even approximately.  Thus, since der Brucer was adopted and has no record of the hour of his birth, we have no idea why he and I get along as well as we do.
The astrology program was quite successful the first time we used it as a fundraiser, at the Orange County Gay Pride Fair, which was held in August that year I believe.  It was also quite successful the second time, at the Long Beach Gay Pride Festival the following spring.  At the Stonewall West Gay Pride Festival in West Hollywood that June, however, we had a lousy booth location, which combined with festival's "been there done that" attitude resulted in the booth just breaking even.  As Anthony Shaffer noted in Sleuth, never play the same game three times running.  The following year, a couple of other booths were selling astrological profiles, which made our own program redundant.  So it goes.
DR Ann:  You are right about the sunshine today being a shock.  After the great flood that started this week, here in Washington, it is amazing to see blue skies and bright sunshine.
Jed:  A very merry un-birthday to you!
Swishy Sarah:  It was so nice to have you back where you belong (a Dolly reference), even if only briefly.  Keep up those studies.  Maybe we could all take turns tutoring you in Algebra right here at HHW.  Then your parents would have to let you come and play.
Topic of the Day!
 I think I would like to have been around for the start of She Loves Me.  Not only is it one of my favorite all-time musicals, but just being able to watch this great cast and group of collaborators creating this masterpiece, only to see it basically fade from memory.  Maybe it was just too small a show for a big Broadway theater.
As for chat, I will probably have to miss it, regardless of which day.  I have rehearsals on both evenings, so I will be there in spirit only.
I will be leaving soon to go have dinner and see Wilder at Playwrights. Sounds very interesting. I love John Cullum. I never saw Shenandoah but I have played the OBC recording many times. I saw him in Urinetown before it moved to Broadway. Don't Be The Bunny! What a great number.
Wilder is a memory play about a boy who grows up in a brothel. I've heard good things and I'm looking forward to it. The new space at Playwrights is beautiful.
She was so nice to me in 1979 when I spoke to her after Sweeney. My that was a long time ago. Compared to today, no security at all. DR Jrand, I'd love to see Dorothy Collins in MY FAIR LADY if you can find it. Alexis Smith was wonderful in FOLLIES and won all the prizes, but I have to confess that I thought Dorothy was the best of the four leads. Alexis had pitch problems the night I saw it.
DR MBarnum, the next set of four Holmes films is scheduled for November, and the third set of four in set for February (I think, or January) of 2004. Still no word if the Fox films are part of it, but I'm not complaining. To get excellent copies of the twelve Universal ones will be a dream come true.
News from the Rialto: Miss Jasmine Guy, late of Chicago and before that (long before that) A Different World (the NBC sitcom) has "left" the production of The Violet Hour, the new play by Richard Greenberg (of Take Me Out fame). It's the opening production of Manhattan Theatre Club's new space in the refurbished Biltmore Theatre (the pictures I've seen make it look gorgeous). Rumors abound (as usual). The show is scheduled to open very soon. Ms. Guy is the second name to leave the show. Laura Benati (a wonderful and touching Cinderella in the recent Into the Woods) left the show earlier during the rehearsal period. Ms. Guy's understudy has taken over the role. Unfortunately, I don't know her name.
And now, off to dinner.
DR Ben: It has been claimed that "medical reasons" were behind Guy's departure. She left in the middle of a performance, so that has some possibility.
More disturbing Rialto news is the increasing number of trouble signs surrounding "Taboo." Jeff Calhoun brought in as "choreographic consultant" and then previews being delayed four (count them four) days, because of "technical difficulties." It seems to be a disaster in the making-a shame, really, because I like Rosie and I don't want her to lose money. Also, it's an original show, with a new score, which you don't see so often.
"Everything Was Possible" was a terrific book. It's too bad that there aren't more books like that written.
There is one on the creation of "The Fantasticks" and to a degree we learn a little about the original "Gypsy" through Arthur Laurents autobiography.
Although everything has probably been said about it I would have liked to have sat with the dancers in "Chorus Line" when they did the midnight talks about their lives.
I'm surprised no one has tried to revive that yet.
Okay re: the picture thing. I read what BK wrote:
Quote
For example, should I want to post an image, I go down to the attach box (you have to not be in the "quick reply" place, I browse my computer until I find an image, I find said image, I open said image, said image address automatically shows up in the attach box and I post.
I see the "browse" button beside "attach". I hadn't seen that before. And I didn't realize I had to click on that.  But in BK's blurb, I also didn't get "i find image and open image". I wasn't getting where you found it and how you opened it (okay I know this is all basic, but until you've done it once ...).
Anyhow I just saved my pic to a disk and browsed it from there. Now it may be too big. But we'll see. Oh and you can guess which one in the pic I'm not :)
Yeah it worked (the file appeared automatically in the attach column) but it's too big I guess  :'(
But I definitely get the idea now.
Jrand - the pix did turn us into widescreen, if not Cinemascope.  I think if you do one pic per post it will be fine.  I'm going to delete the post and please try reposting the pix in two separate posts.
Noel: Sorry I had to take it down but no one could read the posts.  If you're not sure how to resize a pic please visit the tech board.  A pain in the ass I know, but soon we'll all be familiar with the little peculiarities of the new board.  Of course, on the old way no one could EVER post pix.
Jennifer: If your photo is on your computer, you push browse, it will bring up various places on your computer - go to the place that has the pic and click on the pic which should enable you to "open" it - if you do it correctly, you will then automatically see the address in the "attach" box.
Like this:
I wasn't going to post this, but I decided to anyway.  I was surfing around the 'net today, and through some unseemly way (which shall remain unseemly) I stumbled upon an on-line journal.  There was an entry as to whether or not the writer should purchase BK's new CD, and someone had commented that he needn't bother because it was trite and just another excuse for BK to produce a CD. Something like, This man will do anything to produce a CD...  I can't quote directly, but it wasn't very nice.   There... it's posted.    :)
Title: Re:THE FALL OF DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME
It's funny, Matthew, but the minute I read your post above I knew exactly where to go to see the post you reference.  Easy as pie when certain types register here at haineshisway.com.
As to the comment, no it's not very nice and not only that it is rather stupid, but predictable - not easy to pass judgment on a CD you haven't heard.  And how far do I need to go to produce a CD?  Not very far - about ten minutes from here.  Well, I did have to go to NY, too, to do the vocals.  I'll produce any CD that's fun and interesting, which is more than I can say for some people in the recording industry.  But, pay it no mind - once you know the history a bit you'll understand the negativity all too well.
Gee, DR td, i can do a pretty "mean" Fifi d'Orsay!
Besides, my workplace is only 3 blocks from the Musée d'Orsay, so.....call me François d'Orsay anytime!
Wow! Behind smiling BK hugging smiling lady -- a NEW one!! My! talk about an Homme Fatal! -- there's a poster from an old French movie starring a famous French comedian, FERNANDEL, whose son was in the revival of IRMA LA DOUCE here in the sixties!
No! The son did not play IRMA, but I'm sure he could do a "mean" Fifi d'Orsay now too.
"Small World, Isn't It?"
The lady I'm hugging is the one and only Tura Satana - she of Faster, Pussycat, Kill, Kill.  She also plays a hooker in the film version of Irma La Douce.
Since I haven't mentioned it yet, even though it looks like we're way down from the last three days, post-wise, we have rarely had a Saturday with this many posts, so I'm entirely jiggy, oh, yes, I'm entirely jiggy.  That said, let us not rest on our laurels or even our hardys, let us keep up our posting ways, for it is not even evening yet.
Thought I'd try my hand at the new board effects.  Hope it works! :)
I guess I should be honest and  say that at first, I didn’t realize that the Note page was still there–I thought that site was gone and this was the only site now.  I had book marked this page and unmarked the old one.  Now that I realize there are still two sites, I corrected my error.
LC–Thank you.
It would be hard for me to pick just one Play/Musical I would want to see/be a part of from beginning to end.  POTO, DOTV, Le Miz, Chitty,?  How does one choose?
My bit of trivia for the day–how many people here know why we have Day Light Savings Time?  Most of you will be to young but the reason was (as far as I know and I could be wrong) because of WW I & II.  They wanted an extra hour for the factories and farmers to be able to work because they went into blackout mode at night in case we were bombed.
At least that’s what my Mom told me.  I still can’t believe my Mother was a welder (Pittsburgh Steel) on the big ships doing the war!
I wanted to ask those of you plunked the cash for “Taken”–were you?  I tried to watch it the first time it was on the Sci Fi channel, couldn’t do it.  Tried again the 2nd time, still couldn’t sit through it.
I can't get the picture to work--A question for the tech board, I know.
Well, I'm off to usher for "Stories from Mama's Table."  It's two different women's a cappella choirs, one is from the U.S. (maybe even Washington state, I'm not sure) and the other is from Eastern Europe.  They're singing about the stories that women tell around the dinner table...or at least it has something to do with passing on stories while eating.  It sounds quite interesting and I've heard that both groups are very good!  I'll check back in afterwards.
TCB, Mr. Cal Bolder is one of my favorite actors!!!
You might recall him from that classic film JESSE JAMES MEETS FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER in which he had the starring role of hunky Hank the cowpoke who gets turned into a Frankenstein monster by the evil daughter of Dr. Frankenstein! LOL!
He was also in HELLER WITH PINK TIGHTS and a few other movies. And he guest starred on lots of TV shows such as BONANZA, MAN FROM UNCLE, GUNSMOKE, etc.
He seems, however, to have completely disappeared off of the face of the earth as I am totally unable to find out what has ever become of him!
If you liked his picture then here is another from his episode of ADVENTURES IN PARADISE.
I'm back from dinner with friends.
We ended up at this awwwwfffuuulll over-priced low-quality steak house ("Le Biftèque" if Jennifer wants to know) because one of my friends was feeling nostalgic for the restaurant her parents used to take her to for "important occassions".
I made the unfortunate choice of having a small steak.  Of course said steak was chock-full of meat tenderizer (which I am allergic to).
Now I am under considerable intestinal duress and will probably be in such a state for the next couple of hours.  :'(
Hello everybody! This is the first time I've gotten to sit down and read posts all day. It's been a long, been a long, been a long, been a long day! (Ooh a How to Succeed reference!) Today was Homecoming for my old high school, so a bunch of alumni decided to go back and visit for the parade, game, and (for a few of us) the dance. It was wonderful to see old friends, and it was even pleasant to see some people with whom I wasn't that close. Everyone seemed to dismiss all of the pettiness from high school, which was quite appreciated. In some ways, it seemed as if we had never left. (Yes, some nostalgia set in!) Overall, it was quite a pleasant day.
At the dance, which three of my close friends and I decided to attend about four hours before it began, I spotted...you guessed it!...Swishy Sarah! She looked gorgeous in her sparkly strapless dress, and her hair, which was in a French twist, was so elegant! We talked for a few minutes, but I didn't want her to talk too much as you can easily tell that she hardly has a voice. :( I wanted her to stay quiet as much as possible so not to damage that phenomenal voice of hers! I asked if she had anything more to relay to all the dear readers, but she told me she was able to sneak on and post. Hopefully we will be hearing from her very soon! I have a feeling that she's determined to bring that grade up quickly!
Other things to say before I must go to bed:
DR Danise, I'm sorry to hear about your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.
DR TCB: Yes, the guy in the picture really is Josh Hartnett! (Or as some like to say, Josh Hott-nett. You're definitely right--he is a hottie!) I met him at the 92nd Street Y, where my uncle works. (The guy in the background on the left is my uncle.) Basically, during the Tony Awards, my mom found out from my aunt (who was staying with my uncle--their bro) that Josh was going to be in Manhattan the day after my birthday. He is one of the few celebrity guys about whom I can act even a bit "teenybopperish." Anyway, he was part of a panel discussion, and my uncle got me a ticket and also finagled a way for me to escort Josh in. I was almost in Heaven! Josh's limo arrived about 35-40 minutes late, so I only got to meet him for about 5 minutes, but I was completely and utterly satisfied! Oh, and I think it's funny that you said it looks like we were about to go on a date because my uncle has that picture up in his apartment, and his friends actually thought I was dating Josh due to the way it appears realistic, I guess! I don't know, but it made me happy!  :D
So little to do, so much time (Ooh!  Ooh!  Isn't that a "Willy Wonka..." reference?)
I've been going through disks and disks of saved images (stuff I found on eBay that I was outbid for, or that I won, or that I could never afford so saved pictures for the memory).
I love this photo-attaching demon that's taken hold.  But what to post, what to post?  Therein lies the dilemma.  I don't have any Cal Bolden's up my sleeve; and I don't have any June Wilkinsons, either.
Since François enjoyed my "Lili" still (a most unusual item, that), I'm going to share now a color poster that shouldn't tax the resources of this here board too much!
Well, I'm off to usher for "Stories from Mama's Table."  It's two different women's a cappella choirs, one is from the U.S. (maybe even Washington state, I'm not sure) and the other is from Eastern Europe.  They're singing about the stories that women tell around the dinner table...or at least it has something to do with passing on stories while eating.  It sounds quite interesting and I've heard that both groups are very good!  I'll check back in afterwards.
My evening, part 1:  Okay, I got some of the details (above) wrong.  Both groups are from California.  Also, the evening was called "Songs from Mama's Table" and the Washington Center (where they performed tonight) says:
The passage and transmission of cultural traditions has often centered on food and the activities of the kitchen. Two of America's celebrated a cappella vocal ensembles join forces for this cross cultural event.
Through 20 years of performing, acclaimed recordings and an appearance on the Braveheart soundtrack, Kitka has specialized in the women's vocal music of Bulgaria, Russia, and Eastern Europe, thrilling listeners with "celestial earbending harmonies."
My evening, part 2 [yes, I'm padding!  I'm almost to 25 posts (as of this post)]:
Linda Tillery's Grammy-nominated group, The Cultural Heritage Choir, sings traditional music of black America—spirituals, work songs, slave songs—with power and authority, producing "beautifully sung, historically important roots music." (San Francisco Examiner) The two groups close the program singing together in a rapturous otherworldly Afro-Balkan fusion. "The Cultural Heritage Choir is something special... Kitka’s celestial harmonies evoke a world of rugged beauty." San Francisco Examiner[/i]
We ushers were told that the evening would be about 2 hours long, including the intermission.  Well, the show started at about 7:35, the first act lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes and the show ended at about 10:15!  But it was great.  The harmonies, the voices, the intonation were all incredible.  It was entirely a cappella except for one number where they used a couple of violins...otherwise they only had their voices and a few percussion instruments.
If anyone gets a chance to see either of these groups,
GO SEE THEM!
