Title: SOMETHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT
Post by: bk on October 16, 2004, 11:59:06 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you can now write home about the notes, the notes can now write home about you, and now it is time to post until the write-home-about cows come home (a letter awaits them).

I do have a question for bk (and the board) though I am not sure anyone will be able to answer it. I was wondering if anyone knew why in tarnation there has not been a cd recording released of Irving Berlin's White Christmas. I love the movie and would love to have a cd of it for the christmas season. Heck I'd listen to it year round. Is there some snafu regarding rights,  is there not enough of a demand, or am I just whistling dixie?

What is the FSM site, I want to read the Peyton Place thread!

I agree with DRPANNI that the Paramount Music Man (as opposed to the Warner Bros Music Man) sounds like a perfect tenant.  Except isn't Paramount quite a drive from Studio City?

Did we get a picture of the new patio furniture from Mr BK?  I can't quite remember if it was in place when we got a picture of the jacuzzi?  AND, Mr BK have you as yet met Mr Cyclops, your landlord?

Okay.....I have finally reached a decision.  I am going to buy some Jerry Lewis movies on DVD.  ;D

So far I have chosen THE NUTTY PROFESSOR (Special Edition), THE BELLBOY, THE ERRAND BOY, and THE PATSY - which are my favorites.

Has any DR bought any of these and are they okay?  How are the extras.  Are there any additional ones I should purchase?  :D

Also has any DR seen the Carol Lynley version of HARLOW?  I think I saw about 10 minutes of it once, BEFORE I had a VCR - that long ago - and I would like to see it.  I have some lobby cards from the thing and some photos.  So any opinions would be appreciated.

Back in the 1950's, Decca released a "soundtrack" recording of WHITE CHRISTMAS which really wasn't the soundtrack at all. Rosemary Clooney was under contract to Columbia who would not allow her to be on the recording, so Peggy Lee was hired to re-sing all of Clooney's numbers. As for the numbers without her, many of them didn't sound much like the soundtrack renditions but rather studio re-recordings of the numbers with dance sections cut out. I believe Decca did have a limited release of this album on CD a few years ago, but I didn't get it because it wasn't the soundtrack.

I don't know if the Rosemary Clooney recording contracts from back then are still valid or not, but I think a soundtrack of probably the biggest grossing film musical of the 1950s is a wonderful idea.

DR Dan-in-Toronto, I hope today is special and your coming years festive,  healthy, wealthy and filled with anything you might wish!

I'm still rattled by FAHRENHEIT 9/11, so I'm going to check out info on the film Francois mentioned later in the day.  This morning is housecleaning, this afternoon is RUSALKA; I checked the full orchestral score out of the NYPL, and I want to follow the music.

I may be E&T from Chat tonight; I've promised a friend to trek to the East Village for a reading of his new musical.

DRTomovoz, are you home?  Welcome back!

I can't promise to be at chat tonight. Today is the opening of SOMETHING'S AFOOT, but we're opening with a Sunday matinee!! This is a new one on me! I've never had the Sunday matinee as the opening performance.

I have no idea what kind of celebrating we'll do after the show, but I'll attend chat if I'm back in time.

Break an afternoon leg DRMATTH.

There is a Rosemary Clooney Cd that was available at www.oldies.com that contains her recordings of her songs from RED GARTERS including some of the soundtrack with Guy Mitchell and Joanne Gilbert and the Paramount Orchestra.

It also includes her Columbia recordings of the WHITE CHRISTMAS songs with  Percy Faith and the Mellowmen and Paul Weston.  Her sister Betty sings SISTERS with her as she does on the movie soundtrack.

I've always wanted the "real" soundtrack of WHITE CHRISTMAS as well, but passed on the CD with Peggy Lee, too.

Oh well.....maybe someday.

I urge all DRs who are true fans of the Broadway Musical to get the DVD of BROADWAY: THE AMERICAN MUSICAL.  The PBS portion is, of course, wonderful, but so are the five hours of DVD "extras" including many rare performances and a lot of "talking heads" that had to be left out of the interviews... and not the "historians" of "theatre writers", but the stars, songwritters and performers who the series is about.

Hello I am writing for DR Michael.

Michael has been under the weather which ended up with a trip to the hospital. He was there for three days. They could not find anything, but he is still in pain. He has appointments with several doctors this coming week to try and see if they can pinpoint the problem. (Severe eck and shoulder pain and headaches)

Once they find out what the problem is and cured. He'' be back.

Your Birthday is the same as the lady from work who retired. I shall be giving her a call later on today.

I am also sorry to know there is no “real” soundtrack from “White Christmas”.  I suppose you could record from the movie itself and burn it to a CD, if you wanted to make one for yourself.

We were talking about the movie, “The Frisco Kid” with Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford at work just the other day.  I decided to buy the DVD and found that there isn’t one!

I have lots and lots to do today.  Have a good one and I will try to be a chat tonight!

Last night I decided to finally watch my Criterion DVD of THE BLOB. I love that movie and it was so nice to see it in all of it's glory. It is an expensive DVD but has some wonderful commentaries, which I have only listened a bit too so far.

It had been years since I last saw this movie and am happy to report that it is just as much fun as ever!

HAPPY NATAL DAY, DEAR  READER DAN-IN-TORONTO!

ALL THE BEST BETTER HEALTH VIBES TO DEAR READER MICHAEL SHAYNE!

I don't know about you, BK, but I thought that most of TEII!  looked pretty crappy!  The Fred and Gene intros looked grainy and often unfocused; and some of the clips SHOULD have looked better than they did!  From startling 3-D quality of THE BAND WAGON shots as well as the KISS ME KATE number -now those were brilliantly represented.  I'm talking about the stug such as Katherine Grayson's "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" with lines and scratches and major wear and tear.  That said, it's my least favorite of the three, anyway.
Oh, and one more little thing:  do you think that the clips that look as good as they do are representative of the forthcoming dvds of those films?  (I've never seen the IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER clips look as good as they do here).

As for part 3, well, as long as there is the Lena Horne segment, I'm happy!  I like her style.  I love her honesty.  (and there is more of that honesty on the bonus disc,as well as two numbers).  I actually missed part 3 in its theatrical run, but later learned to appreciate its wonderful use of onstage footage and alternate footage.  I'm exceptionally fond of Debbie Reynolds' I LOVE MELVIN footage.

That said, it's back to Dennis Potter's PENNIES FROM HEAVEN.

Hi TCB!  So glad to see you back here!!

Jed is holding on, for now.  I posted a few days ago that he has found a terrific job opportunity working in the Music Library at UW.  He applied two weeks ago and the job closed Friday.  So this week or next we're REALLY hoping he gets a call for an interview...which would ideally lead to getting the job.  It's the best option for him that's come up in many a month, and he's so perfectly qualified for it...I'm desperately hoping he gets it.

I worked my first gig as a transporter yesterday, taking two girls to visit their parents...an interesting job, to say the least.

The Frisco Kid also stars our very own Miss Penny Peyser as the intended of Mr. Wilder.

As was so frequent in the fifties, there was no "soundtrack" to White Christmas, because Rosemary Clooney was under contract to Columbia Records and wouldn't allow her voice.  And since it's a Paramount film, and they have no interest in releasing their soundtracks, it is doubtful we'll have have one.

Thanks for the information all! I have a friend who lives in New York. She had been looking for it on cd also but couldn't find it anywhere. Her uncle owns an old record shop and he actually had the record. He had a machine that let him burn it to a cd and she shared that with me. I love it but it is different from the movie. DR Danise, I told her if she wanted I could pull it from the DVD and send her a recording. I would love to be able to pull the dialogue from some of the instrumental stuff but the software I have is not that advanced. Beggars can't be choosers I suppose!

It took me a while to read the posts just now, as I keep having to leave the place with Abie while people traipse through.
This morning I had an interesting experience at the Gap. I went to buy an umbrella because when I opened my old one earlier in the day it died. So I'm standing there selecting an umbrella when Eric Benet walks in. He's quite gorgeous and he knows it. I go to pay as does he (he bought some skull cap type hats.) A man in his 60's, also waiting to pay, strikes up a conversation with Mr. Benet. Tells him he's a fan -- then asks him how come he two-timed the beauteous Halle Berry!
Now do you think Mr. Benet punches him out? Or at least tells him to mind his own business. No. He actually gives him an answer. Quite a personal one. Then they shake hands and part.
Go figure.

Ooooh! Pasta!  I made Cincinnati Chili for dinner tonight.  Loads of spaghetti, topped with chili, chopped onions, kidney beans and grated cheddar & monterey jack cheeses.

Now I am tired.

Who is Eric Benet, and if he's so gorgeous why didn't YOU strike up a conversation with him.
Eric Benet is an R&B singer and a well-known sex addict. (He's had treatment. Didn't work.) He was married to Halle Berry until he strayed once too often. He's also around 30-something. Yeah, my type. Darn i shudda talked to him.

I have to take Abie for a walk and get ready. Am taking my landlady and her husband out to dinner and a show. For those of you (and I know there are hundreds among you) who are Jimmy Kimmel (no relation) fans... We are picking up "Uncle Frank" from his show. He's a friend of the performer we are seeing and needed a ride.
I hope I can make it through the show. I made the mistake of eating a bag of dried fruit on an empty stomach at the Farmers Market and am now feeling the effects.

Title: Re:SOMETHING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT
Post by: Danise on October 17, 2004, 05:54:19 PM
I’m tired tonight but I got a lot done.  Not everything but most of it.

After calling around about having the tree in the back yard taken down (and almost passing out at prices I was quoted) I decided to hire the company, Bear & Danise’s Tree Service.  It was explained to me that Danise doesn’t do anything without her supervisor, Bear, there to oversee her work.

They arrived promptly and Bear dug himself a hole to supervise from.  He also grabbed some of the branches and ran with them, then also tried to provide the chipper/shredder by chewing on them.

Not everything was done but one whole limb is down and cut into lengths that the garbage men will take.  I will take pity on them and buy a chain saw to use next weekend to finish everything up.  Trying to everything with a hand saw is rough work.

I'm a Harrison Ford fan, so of course I know and liked The Frisco Kid.   I understand that John Wayne turned the part down.    Hanover Street  is another one of Mr. Fords movies that I think is underrated.

The only movie he made that I can't stand is The Mosquito Coast.  I read the book as well but really had to force myself to finish it.

Thank you for the offer of the video tape, TD,  but I think I have it someplace.  Taped from the TV of course but I was hoping for a DVD.  I went to E-bay and saw one.  Not sure how legal of a copy it is.

Glad you like the photo, DR Elmore and DR Jrand.  It’s the one from the Empire State Building cropped down.    I have some ideas to dress it up but am to tired right now to do anything with it.

I made a new recipe for dinner tonight.  Mom really liked it.

Harvest Pork Roast with Gravy

3 lb pork boneless shoulder roast
1 Pkg (8 ounces) fresh mushrooms, cut in half
1 jar (12 oz) home-style pork gravy
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste with Italian seasonings

 1.  Spray 12 inch nonstick skillet with cooking spray.  If pork roast comes in netting or is tied, do not remove.  Cook pork in skillet over medium-high heat 5 to 6 minutes, turning occasionally, until brown on all sides.

2.  Spray 5 to 6 quart slow cooker with cooking spray.  Place pork in cooker.  Arrange mushrooms and onion around pork.  Mix gravy and tomato past in small bowl; pour over pork and vegetables.

3.  Cover and cook on low heat setting 8 to 10 hours.

4.  Place pork on cutting board, remove netting or strings.  Stir gravy in cooker, serve with pork.

Now I didn’t do a lot of the above.  First, I salted and peppered my pork roast.  I did not put it in the skillet; I just put it in the cooker.  I also put 2 sweet potatoes in with it so they would cook in the gravy juice.  I also put it in at about 250 degrees from about 11:00 AM.  By the time we ate it at about 5, it was so tender, I could “cut” it off the bone with a spoon.

Thanks for the congrats on the T-Shirt, Jane.  I don’t think the design is that great but it did fit in with events around the walk.

Hope you feel better, Panni.  I’m saving my pomegranate for next Friday night because I know how I’ll feel the next day.  Can’t help it.  I love’em.

TCB!  I’m so glad to see you have returned to us.  I wish could have looked at your computer for you.  I’m somewhat good with them.  I spent all of last Sunday at my friends house helping her with hers.  She likes to cook and has a program that she has put hundreds (no joke) of recipes in.  She bought a new computer but couldn’t figure out how to get it to accept what she had backed up.  She had the same problem with Quicken.

She hired a guy to come out (and he had the nerve to charge her forty dollars an hour!) but he couldn’t get either program to work.  Not to brag but I got both up and running WITH all of the old data from the old computer.  I also got her printer to work (the guy downloaded the wrong driver).

Tom, so glad to see your back as well!  A report, we want a DETAILED report!  I heard you walked out on Woman in White!

Ann, tell Jed to hang in there!  He WILL get the job.

Joey, I’m sure it is possible to cut out the dialogue but it would take the right software program to do it.   I've never tried to do that but I think Easy CD Creator might be able to help.

Our beautiful weather is gone and we have had rain.  I did get a break in the rain during my morning walk with Echo, the sun was shining and there was a beautiful rainbow.  There is even a little snow on the mountains, contrasting the autumn colors-very pretty.

As we drove down our one way road this afternoon we were surprised to find our neighbor using his power saw on a tree that had fallen in the road.  Another lucky break for us he had found it before us.  Keith helped him move the broken limbs off the road and we were just in time to see GARDEN STATE.

As far as Chat goes, I really love it, and I'm ecstatic to be back on the site, but I wish Chat would go to Monday at 6 because Monday is a television wasteland, but 6 pm Chat on Sunday interferes with the East coast DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, and I'm not certain I want to give it up for Chat.

Glad the show was okay, which is more than I can say for the DVD I'm watching (I should have known better): Mulholland Falls.  I saw it when it came out and hated every minute of it, but I thought I'd give it another chance.  Aside from the decors of Richard Sylbert (who also plays a small role!) and the wonderful Dave Grusin score, it's as bad as I remembered.  No sympathetic characters, Jennifer Connoly's ridiculously overripe bosoms (she clearly had a boob job before this film, and sometime soon thereafter, she undid it), Melanie Griffith's overripe bosoms and lips (all fake - too bad -she was so cute before all the work) and a story that just sits there like so much fish.

Don't remember much about the Justice incident.

Listening to Donald's radio show about the musicals done at the Royal National in London. He mentions Olivier Award winner David Healy who won for playing Nicely-Nicely in the '82 production of  GUYS & DOLLS.  David that same year was cast as Dr. Watson in my two Sherlock Holmes films, SIGN OF FOUR & HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.   Unfortunately, much of HOUND was shot on location  in Dartmoor and David couldn't get out of his contract with the National.  So after playing Watson in SIGN, we had to replace him with Donald Churchill for HOUND.  David was actually an American from Texas who was married to a British woman.  I did not see this famed production of G & D, because it being my first time in London, I was going to see typical "British" theatre and didn't want to see American musicals.  Donald is wrong about the space between the time the National did A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC & their next musical which he says was OKLAHOMA (I saw both of these by the way, though OKLAHOMA had transferred to the West End by the time I saw.  LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC I saw on the Olivier stage with Dench, Philips, and Hodge).  In between these musicals, the National did yet another revival of GUYS & DOLLS.  This one I did see, with powerhouse Clive Rowe playing Nicely-Nicely.  He must have done five or six encores of SIT DOWN YOUR ROCKING THE BOAT, the night we saw it.  We actually had a hard time getting seats for it and our pal, actor Jason Isaacs, pulled some strings for us and got us excellent house seats.  It was also a huge hit.

I don't remember whether VILLAIN'S OPERA was done before OKLAHOMA or not, but it too was a musical, an updating of BEGGAR'S OPERA about London's East End crime world.  I don't think it was a hit, but the lovely wife, Julieanne, and I were mesmerized by it...It also featured the charismatic Mr. Rowe.

Healy, by the by, was a lovely nice man.  He passed away a few years back.

Okay - about my fiance, Mr. Benet... "Gorgeous" for me means sexy, outstanding in the looks department -- which this guy IN PERSON - not in the photos posted - is. For one thing, he no longer has a beard and he has very sexy lips and a sexy swagger. I do not find him terribly attractive for me personally - but I can see why Halle and all the other women he beds do. He is no Cary Grant, true, but who is?

As for using fan and Kimmel (no relation) in the same breath, I was being facetious about the hundreds of Kimmel (no relation) fans on the site. It's not really necessary to explain that, is it?

I had a fabulous evening tonight. My landlady and her husband had a great time and Uncle Frank - who is a 71-year-old retired New York cop who was, among other things, Sinatra's body guard for 4 years - was a true character who told stories non-stop for an hour.

I think my "Woman In White" stories made it to the site. It really was the worst professional musical I have ever attended. Nothing to recommend it. IMAX theatre with totally forgettable music and lyrics - the only song I remember is the old Christmas carol "The Holly And The Ivy". This show made "The Beautiful Game" look like a masterpiece of theatre.
