Me-me-me-me-me-me-me-me-meeeeeeeee!

Huzzah!

And I only had to be up at 2:12 a.m., PST, to be the first poster!

All those sleepy heads on the East Coast should have been up at 5 a.m., EST, so they, too, could have vied for first post!

DR Jed:  Let me be the first on the list to wish you a Happy Birthday ON your actual birthday!

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Happy Birthday, Jed[/move]

I found some untapped energy a few hours ago and cleaned out my refrigerator.  I'm glad to say I found no dancing chunks of ham or cheese, but I had to throw out a piece of "What is it, fish" I'd forgotten was in there, and it didn't look any too happy to have been left in the refrigerator.  There was also some spinach and collards, both of which were entertaining spores of some sort.  I won't go into the two quart-sized milk containers from whenever it was I left them in there.  They're gone now.  I took the trash out lest the warm air incited some form of growth or other activity.

While I did have one whole strawberry daiquiri Friday evening (and nodded off in my chair for nearly three hours afterward), I contented myself with iced tea this evening and have had no unseemly naps in my chair or elsewhere.

I just completed watching "Elaine Stritch: At Liberty" on DVD and found it absorbing.  She really can disturb a song, though.

BK:  Do you keep all the DVDs you watch?  If so, how do you store them and where?  Those and the CDs, of course!

Well, Dear Wife Joy was absolutely brilliant at that party we performed at last night.  So good, in fact, that we were each given double the salary we'd bargained for.  That'll come in handy.  The lady whose birthday it was, we were told in advance, wanted Richard Rodgers songs.  I was all prepared to do I Didn't Know What Time It Was (and NOT as a Daylight Savings Reference) but she told us she much preferred Hammerstein to Hart.  A lot of the time we underscored the dining, but whenever Joy hit a high note, they dropped their silverware to applaud.
I think this was the right decision: much more fun than my high school reunion, which would have cost a bundle to go to.  Here we got out on the plus side and got to catch the tail end of the World Series.  Better to admire the accomplishments of a 23-year-old hurler than to learn the dubious accomplishments ("I'm in Real Estate!") of those much older.

Oh, svelte BK, you simply must tell us whether or not THE SOLID GOLD CADILLAC has the final scene in technicolor!

I'll have my Warner toons tomorrow!  I've heard that I should not get rid of my laserdiscs just yet, though.

So, it's still free-for-all Sunday, right?

Hey Emily: I actually love the Bifteque! Although I've never had the steak there.  I also used to go there a lot as a child.  Now I only go maybe twice a year.  But I like their ribs, and I think it's nice for parties!

Thanks for the karma!

Why, thank you TD, but I think you meant Jed. I admit I did mention my birthday in a post yesterday, but that was in relation to hitting 50 posts and turning 50 in February. I have a few months to go before the next natal day.

I turned all my clocks back last night, except for the cable box, the VCR and the computer, because each of those appliances do it themselves, so I am up to time (similar to being up to date).

Btw, I forgot to mention that yesterday I tried my first krispy kreme donut.  They opened their first location here months ago. But it is not really near where I live. Well yesterday while I was shopping, some people were selling them for a charity. So I bought a dozen.  Although as soon as I got in my car I could barely keep myself from crying.  The money was being raised for a small boy who has a brain tumor. And the only operation they can get is in the US. And the Quebec government won't pay for the treatment.

Lots of lovely late posts and pictures last night.

Yes, DR MBarnum has contributed MANY photos and facts to Brian's Drive In Theater, a wonderful site.  He is the one who introduced me to it.

He is also the author of a couple of interviews with stars of the "Hercules" type movies that will appear in the next issue of Scarlet Street!!  With photos!   ;D

Sounds like the Groucho Marx set is a must have.  Thanks, Mr BK, for letting us know.

So, hmmmmmmmm.....do you as theatre goers think that a matinee performance is any different than an evening performance?  Do you think the different time of day makes for a better or worse performance?  Do you feel differently about shows you see in the daytime?

Wow! I had NO IDEA that THE SOLID GOLD CADILLAC was slated for release! It's my absolute favorite Judy Holliday movie followed closely by THE MARRYING KIND.

Good morning one and all from a very exhausted me.

The intestinal troubles continued far into the night and I just COULD NOT SLEEP! (again... WAY more information than you wanted or needed)

I hate not being able to sleep when I am oh so tired.

Jennifer - my little sister (who towers over me at 6 feet making her my "big" little sister) had the ribs at the Bifthèque and enjoyed them very much.  Maybe I should have had those.  Of course, it may not have been the tenderizer that caused me troubles at all.  I haven't eaten that large a quantity of red meat in a while - maybe my body was saying "old on a second... WTF?!?" :)

Just be glad that I haven't included any of the 15 vomiting smilies from that website we are all enjoying so much! :)

For those of you in the NYC area, or elsewhere for that matter, who care about such things, Mr. Luciano Pavarotti is scheduled to sing three performances of TOSCA at the Met this season. I would venture to say that should he actually be able to get on the stage, this will be his last hoorah at the Met. I'll try to find out the dates that he's on, and I will definitely let you all know.

Okay, I woke up at ten-fifteen only it was nine-fifteen.  LOVE that.  Now, how many of you have read the notes?  No LYING.  Because in them I bring up something that is interesting to me - how many of you thought this was our "new" home page or site?  Because after yesterday's query I began to remember people saying "congrats on the new site".  So, I hope I've been clear that this isn't, in fact, our "new" site, this is just the message board of our old site.  Our home page is still the BK's Notes page, and that's what you see if you go to haineshisway.com.  This was never designed to be our home page and I hope you will all continue going to the notes via the old way.

I think I've managed to reset all the clocks but one.  I shall go reset that now, and then all that will be left is the car clock.

We're havin' a party here, are we not?  Let's dance, baby.

Good morning all, although I guess on the east coast it's not morning anymore.  Very nice to have the extra hour of sleep last night!

Happy birthday to DR Jed!

I am still reading the notes before I come to this portion of the site.  If I didn't read the notes first, I think I would be very lost when it comes to things like the topic of the day.  I never thought the community section was a separate site from HHW, although it is new and improved and maybe that's what people were getting at?

Last night I got a chance to see 21 GRAMS, the new film from Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.  Wow, what a powerful experience!  The storyline is structured in a similar manner to his last film, AMORES PERROS, in that three stories are connected by a car crash.  I thought amazing performances were turned in by the leads (Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Naomi Watts) and I think at least one of them (Miss Watts, if I had to take a gander) will be remembered for it this awards season.  A fantastic film.

Since it is Halloween this week, I was curious what you DRs would be dressing up as this year.  And in the past, what have been some of your most memorable costumes?

Halloween costumes is a fine topic, LC.  (http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung0903/feiertage/feiertag-smiley-015.gif)

This year perhaps I'll go as Cassie from A Chorus Line.  THAT will be frightening.

I get rid of DVDs that I don't like or that I know I will never ever watch again.  I have a specially built wall unit in my den which holds quite a few of the DVDs, and I also store some in kitchen cabinets (I have a LOT of cabinets) and I also store some in my book room along with the books.  Also in the book room is a very large closet and in that closet reside my CDs, all housed in specially built wooden units.

DR Jason, that would be something to see one of Pavarotti's last performances at the Met!  (I don't think I would go, but it would still be something.)  I went with my family to see him many years ago and he kept excusing himself during songs because he "could not go on."  I think the promoters finally pushed him back out on the stage to sing a few since people had paid so much money for their tickets.
Title: Re:I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TIME IT WAS
Post by: Jason on October 26, 2003, 09:56:24 AM
LC--Two years ago, Mr. P. made his "final" appearance at the Met, and cancelled both performances! They had huge screens set up outside Lincoln Center and the house, which holds 4,000 people, was sold out. The crowd outside was VERY angry, but the crowd INSIDE was angrier because they had paid a fortune to get in to see him sing. I heard his standby was fabulous, though...and it became the standby's Met debut.

I am about to head out for my afternoon and evening of theatre. I'm seeing a showcase production of The Mystery of Edwin Drood at the Gallery Players in Brooklyn this afternoon and this evening I will be seeing Lucky Stiff at York with Malcolm Gets and Mary Testa and more.

Wilder (at Playwrights) was very interesting (there is that horrible word). I liked it. It's about a man revisiting his past, and you're not quite sure everything he is reliving actually happened. The music is very folk/bluegrass influenced. One of the members of the Red Clay Ramblers wrote the score. It's a small, chamber musical with lots of erotic staging. John Cullum as the older Wilder is excellent. Jeremiah Miller, the young man playing him as a 15 year is very good. He's young but he's got a strong voice and good presence. Lacey Kohl plays the role of the mother and the prostitute and does a respectable job switching between the two. I'm not sure what kind of response this is going to get from the general audience. The show runs about 90 minutes with no intermission and a couple of people left during the show. I could also tell that the man next to me HATED the show by his body language and his exclamations of disgust or something else. He would put his hand over his face and sigh deeply like "I can't believe what's being done here" I think it's a perfectly respectable piece of work. I'm glad that a new piece is being done and that John Cullum has agreed to do it. We need more good, solid theatre actors willing to take a chance on new work.

That's my view. Now out the door. Later!

Oh, yes indeed, I read it all. What I DIDN'T read was that der KimmelFührer had reserved unto himself any use of the consecutive letters "bruce". That my sainted mother name me Bruce before there every was a Kimmel Bruce is no nevermind. That my pink little head was doused in holy water to make me "Bruce" for all eternity is no nevermind. That neither Bruce Lee nor Bruce Springsteen will ever be able to register for this sight is no nevermind. That Woody's really put-down der Brucer has been denied his identity is no nevermind.

So, dear readers, since der KimmelFührer has captured my living name, I have been reduced to registering in the name of my dearly departed Scottie. It seems the premptive tentacles of der KimmelFührer have yet to extend to the canine afterworld - so Lassie and Rin Tin Tin are welcome.

It's a shame that Mr. Pavarotti did not learn a lesson from some of his contemporaries (such as the Misses Sutherland, Horne and Price) and retired while the audiences were still applauding.  In his prime, Mr. Pavarotti's voice was thrilling and second to none.  Today, I am afraid, his voice is in shreds and on stage he has become a caricature of himself.  I read some time ago that the Met was planning to wheel him out for another absolutely final farewell performance, and sadly shook my head.

The last time the Pav did TURANDOT, two supers had to literally hold him up while he sang "Nessun dorma", and from time to time, they would turn him around and someone behind him would hand him a bottle of water that they had hidden in the bell sleeves of their costumes. He apparently doesn't even bother to change clothes after a performance...he goes home in his sweaty, gross costume and I've heard he smells bad.

Last night I dreamed that I was at Manderley.  Actually I dreamed that I was at McDonalds, trying to order breakfast.  I really wanted oatmeal.  The menu said they had it, but the girl was refusing to make it for me.  Then the guy in the next line said something which I believed to be a quote from a movie, and I woke myself up trying to figure out which movie it was from...

By the way (BTW, in Internet lingo), I've been getting e-mails with attachments from e-mail addresses I know - I want to remind you - do not open any attachment, even if it's from someone you know, without first checking with them to make certain it's safe.  These have all been "cleaned" by MacAfee so they were all bogus and viruses.  Be careful.

A Life Lesson. DR's: I went to a House Concert last night and met a Hungarian woman and her non-Hungarian husband. Had a fascinating chat with them. Turns out they gave up their high-paying, high-stress careers mid-life (in their fifties, actually) when in one year six of their friends died of various diseases and they realized that life is SHORT. So they resigned from said h-p. h-s jobs and became roaming photographers! They roam Europe taking pictures which look like landscape paintings (not my taste, but attractive). They make huge money selling these quasi-art pieces and are incredibly happy. Nice.
BTW - The House Concert was lovely. This is the way chamber music was meant to be heard.

DR TD:  Silly me.  I thought it was der Brucer.

Dear Readers:  Just stopped at Ticketmonster at my local Tower Records to pick up a ticket to see Miss Susan Egan in cabaret in Orange County this coming Saturday night.  They must have just released some tickets, as each of the times I tried to get one before today the show was allegedly sold out.  Will file a report next Sunday.

Brief as it may have been, it wasn't a cheap trip.  Decca opera recordings were on sale, and I've been wanting to get Solti's version of Wagner's Ring for some time.  It's the first time I've bought a CD version of something I already own on vinyl, but it's perfect listening for long road trips and the last couple of times I've been on a long road trip I've regretted not having it to listen to.

I should like to point out that the renameable der Brucer (renamed here as GeordieMc) does not resemble Mr. Stryker.  The photograph included with his personal data is the accurate representation of his presentation.  He does, indeed, look like a Lego Munchkin.

Strange light here in the Los Angeles area today, due to the San Bernardino wildfires.  Everything is cast in an orangy twilight, which is pretty but for all the wrong reasons.

As for Holloween, I do not care for the holiday at all.  Rather, I do not care for the tyranny of those who insist that everyone must wear a costume.  Every year at work, someone would hear that I do not enjoy wearing costumes and would shreik at me "But you HAVE to wear a costume!"  "I most certainly do not," I would reply, "There's no have to involved."  "But you HAVE to wear a costume!" the shreiker would repeat, in a voice that would embarrass Fran Drescher.  At that point my replies would become quite unprintable and imaginative, making the shreiker cringe and retreat, seeking a supervisor who could make me bow to the shreiker's demands.  Said supervisor, having been through the routine the year before, would say "Tut, tut," and kindly tell the shreiker to pound sand.

I do not mind wearing a tuxedo on New Year's Eve, but I will not wear a costume on Halloween.

Oh-HO!

I don't recall BK ever mentioning that they had CAKE at his book-signings.

Yet, GeordieMC's photos of BK doing such signings clearly shows a sinfully delicious-looking chocolate cake of one sort or another (perhaps a torte or a bundt?), and possibly something with lemon...looks like a slice of lemon cake on a plate in front of BK.

Was it good cake, BK?   Yummy yummy yummy just like love in your tummy?  It sure "looks" like it was good!

I'm sneaking on again for a post. I'm going to get caught, I know it.

Last night ended Homecoming Week with the dance, and Laura summed it up perfectly. It was LOADS of fun, my hair turned out great, my dress stayed up, thank the LORD, and the music wasn't too bad either. The only thing that was really weird was that they wouldn't turn off the lights like they did last year. Last year they had the lights off with multi-colored lights on, and spotlights, etc. This year, the lights were on. It is VERY hard to dance with the lights on! I know why they did it (at our rival schools HC last year, activities were going on that shouldn't have been going on, and probably wouldn't have happened if it weren't so dark), but don't you think they should trust us until we prove that we can't be trusted? Pain in the bootay.

Anyway, it was GREAT to see Laura, and all of my friends who had graduated *tear*, and a blast was had by one and all. I went over a friends house afterwards and I think we fell asleep at 6 am. and that was AFTER DST, so it was really 7. We woke up at 11, took the millions of pins out of our hair, grabbed sweatshirts and cash, and walked to Starbucks, where we met up with about 6 other friends. I couldn't talk, so my friend Austin had to order for me. Sweet, sweet caffiene :) Caramel frappuchinos are a Godsend.

Oh, one weird thing did happen at the dance: There was this man who looked to be about 60, walking around with a camera. He kept asking girls if they wanted their picture taken for the yearbook, but after about 10 minutes of adjusting where people were standing, he'd say, "Oh, my camera isn't working. I wonder why...sorry." He was there the whole time, and I asked my science teacher from last year (also one of my very very great friends) who he was (I figured he'd know since he was organising the whole thing), and he didn't have a clue. PEDOPHILE!!! (spelling? Couldn't remember if it was a PH of an F)

Anyway...loved the pictures of the hottie that MBarnum so wonderfully shared with us.

It's so nice not to be coated in glitter :) I'll try to get on later.

~Swishy~

Oh and may I just express my jealousy. Aly's parents come to pick us up this afternoon, and guess what they're driving? A yellow '99 Volkswagen Bug with 30,000 miles on it, and a year left on the warranty. For her. Her dad left yesterday morning saying he had to go to work and wouldn't be home to see her, and that he'd talk to her the next day. He REALLY flew to Florida to get the damn thing and drive it back for her.

She has a pretty new car and I get a '90 Volvo. Complete with non-existent AC and a ceiling that won't stay up, and is now being held there with duct tape.

The jealousy, ooooh the jealousy.

Dear Readers:

I saw a provocative and very disturbing new film yesterday.  It is called Elephant, and it was written and directed by Gus Van Sant.  It is a fictional story based on the tragic shootings that took place at Columbine High School in Colorado.

I believe that the only other Van Sant film I've seen is My Own Private Idaho, and based on my viewing of these two films, plus what I've read, I believe it is fair to say that Mr. Van Sant has a distinct directorial style.  It is highly mannered, and I'm guessing that most people either like it or don't, and few, if any, feel neutral.  I like it.  In Elephant, there are numerous long tracking shots of people in the film walking, getting themselves from Point A to Point B, filmed from behind.  In some ways, it's a variation on the subjective point of view, as we observe things during these shots pretty much the way the character being followed does.  These shots certainly create considerable tension, building up to the film's horrible conclusion.  Several scenes are repeated, shown from different characters' point of view, which reinforces the simultaneity and intersection of several events occuring throughout the movie.  I thought this was a highly effective technique.

The story is told in a fashion that borders on cinema verite.  Enormous questions are raised (the biggest one being "Why?"), but no answers are provided.  The L.A. Times reviewer saw the students depicted in the film as angelic.  I saw them as being rather adrift, with no clear role models or direction or discipline in their lives.  There is little adult presence in the film, and most of the adults who do appear do not come off well.

There is one moment in the film that apparently has caused a good deal of controversy.  For me, that moment serves as an apt metaphor of these kids' unsatisfied need for attention and affection.

This is not a film that one easily forgets.

Just returned from another long afternoon of laundering. Indeed, Senorita Lavadora was there, using her typical fourteen dryers and apparently she had brought some friends with her, as they occupied all of the folding tables. One of her friends, the lady with the rat-tail looking pony-tail (is that oxymoronic?), had the most nasal voice I've ever heard in my life--worse than Fran Drescher--and yelled to be heard by everyone in the laundromat. It was quite disturbing and I gave her the evil eye for it.

I meant to respond to bk's query. I did not think this was a new site. You had been telling us for days that the posting board was going to be changed, and so when I saw it, that's exactly what I thought. The front page of the site where your daily notes begin looked very familiar with the few modifications which you had also discussed as being redesigned, not as an entirely new website.

I agree about Gus Van Sant.  I know people who revere him as a great artist and others think his films are crap. I think "My Own Private Idaho" was his  best
film but this is just my opinion.  He lives here in Portland and "Elephant" had a charity premiere.  I am looking forward to seeing it.

DR Jay, I saw ELEPHANT a couple of days ago and agree with your thoughts on the style of filming.  I thought the long, dreamy shots following the various characters around made you feel exactly how adrift they were.  I am not really familiar with Gus Van Sant's work, though, so I don't have much to compare it to.  I'm not sure what controversial moment you are talking about, but there was one moment in the film that I found so utterly implausible as to snort out loud.  I wonder if that was the one?  Besides that, I liked the different "types" embodied by the various characters, although most of them were so good-looking it was hard to believe them as your normal everyday teenagers.  I did like that the film provided no easy answers.

I also recently saw a similar film called ZERO DAY which depicted two high school boys planning a similar act of violence; the story was less about the students in general and more about the actual planning itself.  I thought the violence, and emotional impact, at the end of that film was more powerful than ELEPHANT.

The Marrying Kind is also available on DVD - I'm surprised Phhht wasn't in the batch.

I see a lot of people perusing the board - this is, after all, free-for-all day - is it so hard to make a post or start a topic?

I just had three new tires put on my automobile.  I'd had a flat about six months ago and changed out that tire then.  Then, this morning after doing an errand I noticed that another tire was really low - I took it in and it had a leak and was not repairable, so it was time to do the other tires anyway and now I feel safe and sound while tooling around on the road.

I'm about to do some more proofing and then I'm going to watch Solid Gold Cadillac.  I also picked up the third or fourth special edition of JFK - this one doesn't come out until November, but I got an early copy.  The running time looks the same as the last special edition, but supposedly it's a new transfer, and there's a second disc (as their was with the last special edition) that contains a new and long documentary, so that will be interesting.  It's the only Oliver Stone film I really care for.  I also think that along with Terminator 2 and a handful of others, that it's had more DVD incarnations than any other film.

Well, the grass is cut and trimmed, the porch and side walk is blown off, the supper cooked, dishes washed.   I’m sitting here with my bottle of ice cold water having taken 2 Tylenol, dog tired.  I think I’ll be hitting the hay early tonight.  All is right with the world.

I made one of my super easy all in one pot suppers.  You make it a can of Coke of all things!  I don’t drink Coke or wine/alcohol but I do cook with them.  It makes the meat soooo tender.   BTW.  I'm highly allergic to meat tenderizer as well.

Not a virus but wanted to know if anyone else is getting an  e-mail from someone who goes on and about being a Christian, is dying of cancer or something, states they have no children/heir and wants YOU to get the money (some are as “little” as 8.6 million to about 20 million) but you need to contact their lawyer because the money is in a Swiss Bank account or some such?

Now I know this has to be a scam of some sort and just delete them but what kind of kick do people get out of this kind of thing?

I have mixed feelings about Halloween.  Sometime I dress (if I’m in the mood) sometimes I don’t.  We’ll see how I feel on Friday. I have a pair of brown horns that blend in with my hair so perfectly that you have to really look to notice them.  I always get a charge out of wearing them because people know something is different but it takes a double take or two to see them.

I can’t speak for anyone else but I don’t take to the time changes very well.  It always takes me a week or more to adjust.    It’s 6:33 PM and already fully  dark.  I HATE that.

Just read the ending posts from yesterday.  Thank you Laura II.

Have a good evening all.

Yes, it's been quite a day!

We set new "heat" records in the Bay Area AGAIN.  I'm weary of this tropical nonsense.  If I wanted hot weather, I'd move to Florida!

Or Georgia, if I wanted a batch of gnats with my heat!

We have a slight break due by mid-week, so things should cool down a bit.  We haven't had rain since early May, and I sure am looking forward to a rainstorm or three.

I watched "Song of the South" this afternoon.  It was supposed to be a direct copy of the laser, but NO!  Missing are the standard "Sooner or Later" and a verse of the finale, the one that goes "This heart of mine is in the heart of dixie, that's where it belongs, singing a song..."

Why????????????????????????????????????

I, too, am absolutely exhausted. 5-ish hours of sleep after partying isn't quite enough for me, and I'm starting to feel rather like a zombie. Time to go to sleep.

Oh and I might be able to post tomorrow around 1:45, as thats when I have lunch on "B" Days, and I have srict instructions from my voice teacher that if I say ONE word or have the slightest bit of sugar, she'll kill me. So lunch is too tempting of a place. I'll head off to the library and surf the half-hour away.

The annoying thing is that I have choir tomorrow and I'm not going to be able to sing, and then Tues. and Thus. mornings I have All-County rehearsal. Errrr. I want to SING! My entire family is loving it, they keep commenting on how quiet it is, and how something seems to be missing, and how lovely it is. Apparently I sing too much. But pishaw to them if they think they'll stop me. I Will Not Be Silenced!

My brother's girlfriend is here. When I ever-so-pleasantly whispered "Hi Arianne", she says "Wow...you sound like s**t! That is so funny, you really sound awful!"

Isn't she nice? If her car weren't so damn pretty, (2003 BMW) I'd go out and put toothpaste on it.

Just go to www.accuradio.com (http://www.accuradio.com), click on the Broadway icon, and you can listen to an array of Broadway tunes while on the internet. Well, Laura II, I do hope you listen to our very own Brodaway Radio Hour with Mr. Donald Feltham, as it was just about the first of its kind, and in my opinion (IMO, in Internet lingo) remains the best of its kind.

First of all....

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JED!!!![/move]

What a weekend this has been for me!  WOW!   (Warning: very long post coming up)

Yesterday, I, my friend Kate and my new friend Mel went to see Bouncing Gold Wiseguys., more simply known now as Bounce.  Who was it that said that to be a Sondheim fan means getting your heart broken at regular intervals?

Okay, it was not bad.  It was just very far from being great.  We Sondheads are so used to seeing nothing but greatness from him that anything that is merely good comes off as mediocre by comparison.

It's kind of hard for me to pin down where exactly the show went wrong (or at least not right) for me.  I think my friend Kate said it best when she described it as being too "blatant."  There weren't many subtleties, many layers.  Parts of the plot were very predictable.  I mean, I'm not demanding that it be full of irony and darkness...it IS a musical comedy, and who wants to overdose on irony and darkness and excessive depth for that kind of show?  But I guess I had just expected more.  However, the show WAS very funny and there were plently of laughs throughout.  I also thought the second act was better than the first.

The sets were great, I thought...elaborate without overdoing it, and the costumes and choreography were also well-done.

Okay....now the acting.  I thought everyone did good work, but this show, IMO, belonged to....MICHELE PAWK!  Is there nothing this woman cannot do?  She took a character that could have been rather one-dimensional (the stock character of the brassy but sweet gold-digger) and just made her so funny and vibrant and sympathetic.  And that voice!  It was such a joy to see her onstage.

Richard Kind and Howard McGillin were both very good, as Addison and Wilson Mizner, although I think both of them still have room for growth in terms of finding their characters.  But they had a good chemistry together, played out the jealousy and love between the brothers well, and made their characters likeable even though they were playing con artists (one of whom is a drug addict).  McGillin has such a gorgeous voice and I didn't realize how handsome he is either.  Speaking of handsome, Gavin Creel  did a great job as Addison's younger lover.  Somehow, I liked him even better in this than I did in TMM.  And Jane Powell sounded fabulous as the Mizners' mother.

Okay...now the music.  Kate, Mel and I were joking that the score to Bounce is like the Collected Works of Stephen Sondheim Abridged.  There ARE some very good songs....among them the title song, Boca Raton and You Are the Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me, but I have to say this is not his strongest score by a long shot.  Some of the songs have an early Forum-era feel, and are more conventional musical comedy numbers, but others have the more trademark Sondheim sound.  I heard musical phrases a lot of other Sondheim shows...like when Jane Powell is singing at one point, the melody sounded sooo much like Dot in the second act of SITPWG and Mel pointed out that she heard a lot of Into The Woods in there.    And one musical phrase sounded a lot like "God, That's Good" in Sweeney.  I guess it's kind of inevitable that this should happen...I just thought it was kind of interesting.

The show really does need work before it opens, but it DOES have potential.  Overall, I enjoyed myself...I just hope they can get this together SO much...as it is now, I don't know if it would survive very long on Broadway.  I feel like saying this is sacrilege, because I love Sondheim's music sooo much, but I also didn't want to let the fact that I'm a huge fan keep me from being somewhat objective.

OH...After the show, the girls and I went to the giftshop and bought stuff.  We chatted with the saleslady and she told us that Sondheim had been in the gift store a number of times!  He had bought a couple of Degas bags!  Which led me to joke...will his next musical be Sunday at the Ballet with Edgar?  After Bounce, I slept over at Kate's house and we watched Follies in Concert and the film version of Noises Off.  It was really fun...we couldn't stop laughing about how Elaine Stritch wasn't wearing a bra in Follies in Concert...not even once!

Wow...that was long, wasn't it?  Anyway, I DID miss having my HHW over the weekend and I'm glad I'm back!

Emily--that article was hilarious!  You must never give up in your search to find a cute straight musical-loving guy!

The BK signing pics were so great!  Really enjoyed seeing those.

Sarah--I'm glad you're back , sweetie, and  ;D that you had such a good time at Homecoming!  I'd love to see a pic too!  I bet you looked bee--ooo-teee-ful!  8)

I'm sure that you are all by now extremely tired of hearing my mouse woes, and to date everything has been of the "oh, isn't that a cute/funny story" mode, but now it's really gone too far.

Tonight I spied with my little eye a frickin' mouse ON MY BED! ON MY FRESHLY-LAUNDERED BED! I have never felt more violated and paranoid in my entire life and I am over it, dear readers. Oh yes, I am sooooo over it. I called my very own landlord tonight who was, of course, not at home, and I left a very terse message with his son, who apparently agrees with me that it is too much for a person to have to deal with a mouse on his/her bed. IT'S MY BED, FOR GOODNESS' SAKE!!! It's been tainted. I haven't a clue where I'm supposed to go now in my very own home to feel safe from them. If they're on my bed with the lights on, imagine what goes on while I'm sleeping! As I type this I'm literally shaking with anger, frustration, disgust and a tinge of fear.

What am I supposed to do? I don't know where they're coming from...I don't have any food in my house for them to eat...I've not the slightest clue how to stop them because I don't know where they're starting! A person should not have to pay rent to live in these conditions, ladies and gentlemen. Can you understand how I've lost sleep over this? And now, I can't imagine even getting in that bed, what with mice crawling on it. I have to move...but I can't afford to move! What am I supposed to do? I can't live like this anymore...

BK, I agree with you. Our Broadway Radio Show is wonderful and I always listen to that first. Then I move on to the BBC and other stations.

The problem with Accuradio is that it doesn't always work. When I first discovered it at work, the Broadway station worked fine but now it doesn't work for nuttin'. Cabaret Radio also does not work. I've tried and tried and tried. Sending e-mail to Customer Service doesn't do much because they say that it may not work on every computer. Funny thing is, though Broadway doesn't work, I can listen to Swingin' Pop Standards 24/7 on my office computer. AND Broadway, Cabaret Radio and Swingin' Pop Standards all work on my home computer which is a slower, dial up connection. Go figure. At least at work I can listen to the BBC. After Donald, that's my favorite, Showtime, Stage and Screen and so many others.

The time change is making me so very tired. I can barely keep my eyes open.

Oh DR Jason I can relate to your mouse woes.  I found a dead one today laying beside my mouse trap (under the kitchen sink). I screamed.  I have not had mice problems in quite a while.  I was so disgusted. I cannot even imagine what I would have done if I had found one in my bed.

I really have no idea where they come from. But they do move throughout very easily. I once found mice droppings in the kitchen drawer. Yuck!

Happy birthday Jed!

I'm supposed to be writing an essay about why Leonardo da Vinci was the perfect Renaissance man, but since I like to be argumentative, I'm writing about why Leonardo da Vinci was NOT the perfect Renaissance man.

DR Jason:  So sorry about the mouse problem. I have had mice a time or two in my house but was always able to get them eliminated using those green pellet like poisons leading up to one of the box trap things. Worked both times I had them, but it did take a couple of weeks. I know you've been suffering longer than that, and I'm sorry.

You know, I don't mind rebuying DVDs of favorite movies if the transfers are better. A CHRISTMAS STORY  certainly was better to name a recent example, and so were THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER  and PATRIOT GAMES. I don't think I'd watch JFK enough to upgrade it, so I think I'll probably just keep the one I have. And I read one review that said the Extreme Edition of TERMINATOR 2 didn't have as good a transfer as the Ultimate Edition had. (Obviously, that person was not able to see the high def version on his computer.)

Excellent report, Maya.  It does make one wonder what normal audiences feel, i.e. people who don't need to cut anyone some slack, in other words, non-fans.  I would like to get to see it, but won't unless they bring it in.

Now, dance, baby, and we need an explosion of posts, oh, yes, we need an explosion of posts.  Unlike the last few days, getting posts today has been like pulling teeth, but this does tend to happen on weekends.  Ironically, it usually happens on Saturday, not Sunday, and yet Saturday was amazingly strong.  Now, let's have an explosion of posts, shall we?

I'd like to add ALL ABOUT EVE, AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER and MARY POPPINS to that list of worthwhile double-dipping.  And then there's THE BEGINNING OF THE END, which was previously only available as a Mystery Science Theatre title, but now, has that spiffy transfer as well as an absoring, amusing commentary track. . .
I haven't double-dipped on TERMINATOR 2, yet. . .I have the second version. . . and I have absolutely no reason at all to double dip on LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS. . .

DVD-speaking, dontcha just love Marian's line in RAIDERS?

Had a lovely day in Portland today...the weather was beautiful so my buddy Mark and I decided to make it a day and meet our friend Jeff in downtown.

At delicious food and went to some neato retro furniture stores. Didn't buy any furnishings, but was quite tempted!

I did go crazy at the DVD store and picked up BABY'S DAY OUT, CAPE FEAR  (the original, or course), THE DESPERATE HOURS  (the original, or course), THE WHALES OF AUGUST, and the horribly overpriced THE BLOB  (the original, of course)...I should not leave the house with my credit cards!

Maya:  Great report on "Bounce".  I do know what you mean about hearing bits and pieces of other shows.  I've heard those similarities in most of his stuff, even though it's always been more a stylistic effect rather than an outright reminder of another song.  In the case of "Bounce," I take it the "feel" is probably more noticeable because you don't find the songs making their own statement relative to the book.

It's interesting to read, however, that the book is so funny.  This show is an interesting one to follow, I think.

Jason:  Have you talked to your landlord?  If you have and he's done nothing, call the Department of Health and ask them what you can do.  I DO empathize and know whereof your heebie-jeebies can take hold and make life unbearable.

At least with both Jed and I on the West coast, I can get away with this late birthday greeting.  Unfortunately, he is probably already asleep, or not home from rehearsal yet.

Without a doubt, the smiley face in the blue spotlight was the BEST.

Jason:  I am very sorry about your continuing mouse problem.  I did not mean to make light of it before, but you do have a way with words.  I do hope that there is some way that you can move out of that place.  You deserve far better.

MBarnum:  Don't you just love Portland.  I lived there back in the '70s.  I still have wonderful memories of my time there.  Sadly, I don't go down there much any more.  All of my really close friends in Portland passed away from AIDS, including the friend who I always considered to be my brother.

Well, that was cheery.  Best go to bed.  Good night!

BK and Ron--I'm so glad you guys liked my report!  I hope it does go to Broadway soon so you can see it, but not before it's reworked quite a bit.  I know that I will be following its progress (and reception) very closely.

Jason--I'm so sorry to hear about what happened tonight with the mouse.  Here's an idea:

I am about to say something I never thought I would:  I just saw a movie with Jason Alexander and his tenderness in one of his scenes actually made me cry.

After all these years, I finally caught up with Love! Valour! Compassion! tonight.  I found it a very touching and life- (and love-) affirming picture.  I thought Terrence McNally's screenplay was well written and each of the actors quite natural.

Well, we've established one fact about the HHW site today, kids: if two DRs are posting from the same computer, they'd danged better remember to sign off before the other signs on.  I tried posting something earlier, and had to delete when I realized I was posting as der Brucer.  I mean, we're close, but not indistinguishable.

DR Maya:  Thanks for the comments on Bounce.  Der Brucer and I are planning on seeing it the weekend of the 8th, along with the production of Forum at the Signature.

All and all, this makes for an interesting November, as we're currently scheduled to leave Long Beach this Thursday, taking a week to get cross-country (two humans, five dogs).  Then, while I'm getting settled, he returns to the left coast.  And hopefully I'll be able to land some work before he gets back to our new home!  Like I say, it's going to get interesting...very fast!

Now, all I have to do is figure out if that's  :D or  :P.

Thanks again everybody for all the lovely birthday wishes!  Such a group as this could certainly not be found anywhere else on this here internet!

A fairly relaxed, uneventful weekend here.  A nice birthday dinner last night with my mother and sister.  Sunday spent watching football, just as I like it (even if the Seahawks did lose), and then A Christmas Carol rehearsal this evening.  As for gifts, most of my family played it safe and went the cash route (always a good route, I feel).  Also got some kitchen stuff I was lacking and the 8 Women DVD.  And in a couple weeks I'll be seeing She Loves Me with DR Ann as a gift from her.  Simply faboo!

Ooo!  And I now have 2 stars... very nifty, me thinks.

DR Sandra. Learn from the cat. The study of the ice cube has probably given it new meaning to life. A rebirth of learning. Perhaps it will now appreciate the  "I'm Melting" segment of The Wizard Of OZ. Perhaps it has learnt that if you ponder something long enough to will change form and disappear. Things could be worse. You could be having to ponder Leonardo De Caprio and the endless journey of the "Titanic".  Which bring me back to the Ice cube. I was hoping for the Iceberg to win. Nearly time for my supper (6.12pm here), but not I hope the last.

I'm an east coaster and I'm not in bed. Probably because my skin has been crawling since seeing that sickening rodent crawling on my Scooby Doo. I thought about sleeping on the couch, which I dug out of the pile of clothes and books, only to find "remnents" of rodents, if you get my meaning. Little pellets that I'd rather not think about. Apparently there is no safe place to sleep tonight.

My landlord called me back about thirty minutes after I posted and told me that he'd be in tomorrow to put out some poison. At this point, I don't care how they die, I just want them dead. I'm generally very compassionate for living things--even mice--but this has gotten so far out of hand that I'm now on a rampage and I want to kill them all. Isn't that violent of me? I hate that I've come to this, but it truly is disturbing my life now, and I'm fed up with it.

I can't remember who it was that posted a while ago apologizing for making light of my situation. Don't be sorry...up until tonight, even I thought it a bit humourous. But really, mice on the bed is too much. TOOOOOOOO MUCH! I can make light of just about any situation up to a certain point. That point was reached the moment I saw what I saw.

On a more bizarre note, Ms. Ann Miller is on a rerun of HOME IMPROVEMENT right now on Channel 2 in NYC.

I should be in bed...but I couldn't go to sleep without a quick post.
I sadly will not be at chat tomorrow night, I'll be at the first rehearsal for Pirates of Penzance.  I'm a lowly chorus member, or "daughter" if you prefer.  The good part is that I've done the show before, so I already know the score.  I'm a little nervous about the casting for this one...our Fredric, who's the lead tenor for those of you who don't know the show, is notorious for singing off key.  He must have had one hell of an audition to land that part.  God only knows what will happen now...
So have a wonderfully wonderful chat.  I never seem to make it to them these days.  I have a set 5-7 jazz choir rehearsal on Sunday nights, and now Pirates rehearsals on Mondays.  Blah, Blah I say.
This time change has my brain and body fighting.  My brain has informed the rest of the gang that it is only 11:45 (early for a college student) and there is no reason to feel so tired.  My body is stubbornly insisting that it's 12:45 and therefore time to sleep.  Since I resisted the lure of the Night Owl Procrastiation dance and actually finished my homework early tonight, I think I shall give in and get some sleep.
'night all...
