Title: THE MEAT OF THE NOTES
Post by: bk on October 27, 2003, 12:52:55 AM
Well, now that you've finished reading the notes, please comment on them and anything else you'd like to discuss, as well as the topic of the day.

I'll see you all at chat, but in the meattime, let's post until the cows come home.  Yes, Virginia, I know I wrote "meattime" - that is the title of today's notes, after all.

I can't bring myself to get in the bed or on the couch. What's a boy to do? I'm tired. Maybe I'll sleep in the recliner.

What a coincidence!

I also was very fond of a dish called Chicken Alberto at a restaurant that used to be on Melrose, called Pappagallo"s. Sadly, it’s also no longer there. It was potatoes, onions and chicken and onions and potatoes in delicious spices and, all sautéed together.

But closer to home I am very fond of the Chicken Marsala at the Olive Garden. I have tried it at many other restaurants and in my opinion no one has quite achieved what Olive Garden has mastered. They give you more chicken and the sauce is wonderful!

At home I can make palatable chicken catchatore

I'm still finding it near impossible to naviagate at HHW (I'm bringing in the big guns, i.e., my so-boring but helpful computer guru) this week. But it's a bit easier to post first thing in the morning. I feel I should concentrate on major matters, so I'll start with Jason's mouse. Have you tried those hardware-store plug-ins that emit teeny noises that no human (apart from my partner's cousin) can hear, but drive mice nuts? They worked in our place. And everyone says a cat - or even the smell of one (can you borrow a feline?) - helps. You are far too young to be sleeping in a recliner.

Maya, that was a superb review. Is there any way that your constructive criticisms can reach the people who can change things? When Kiss of the Spiderwoman premiered in Toronto, we sat in the first row and were put off by Chita Rivera's sagging arms. I did write a note suggesting she wear longer sleeves, but don't know if anyone listened.

Chicken? My favorite is a simple roast chicken, with lots of coarse salt sprinkled over the bird before cooking, to make the skin crisp. I do make a mean fried chicken if I say so myself. It's from a kosher  cookbook, so there's no soaking in buttermilk. And, oddly, you dip the pieces in the flour and then the egg.

I was pleased to see that the NY Times ran an article this morning on the Boy from Oz - giving some hope that the show will survive on the strength of Hugh Jackman's performance. (The producers also ran a full-page ad in yesterday's Times, with the words "A Huge ... " appearing just below Mr. J's crotch.) I'm hoping that word of mouth will help, too, and I can't believe I'm alone in thinking the show worked well, with moments that were dazzling, and others that were quite touching.

I won't say how long it took me to post these paragraphs - even first thing, the site is sluggish for me. I just hope I won't have to press control/alt/delete to exit - as has been the case.

A good day to everyone.

I was to tired to post when I got home last night, but I had a wonderful time in Orlando. So wonderful that I am going back next weekend.

This main reason I went is that I have a friend who is an actor there and he is performing as the narrator in Hayride at Disney's For Wilderness. It is a hayride in the dark and the story of the legend of Sleepy Hollow is told. The 25 minutes was a very enjoyable theatrical experience and I recommend it for. I will not give a blow by blow description of the event as to not spoil it for anyone. If you have seen it and would like to talk about it let's do it via email.

The reason why I am off to Orlando again next week is that I have been watching the birth of a new musical over the past few year. I saw its second production at the late Disney Institute and a couple of readings since then. They had a reading/workshop in NYC this past winter and the creators were hard at work revising the show.

The musical is called HOLMES and it is a brand new story of Sherlock Holmes. My friend Mr. Gary Life is playing Moriarity a role he is has been doing since its inception through all its productions and readings. He is once again playing the role next weekend and I am looking forward to seeing the changes.

I will have a report on it next Sunday.

Well I will look over the notes for Saturday and Sunday and I will post my comments (if any) here. This new board is addictive and I missed it the last two days!

A belate Happy Birthday to JED I hope is was a happy and festive one. Good health and happiness for the year to come.

To answer Saturday's question. Although there were books written about it I think I would loved to have been there for Show Boat from its inception to the rehersals to its Washington opening and finally Broadway.

I see that DR Jay, Donna also felt this way!!!

DR Michael Barnum glad to see you got the picture thing down. I had problems too. I think it stemed from trying to preview it (which for me didn't work) and then trying to post it. It didn't work. So I attatched the photo and hit post and it usally worked.

Gave Geordie MC a Karma point for the wonderful pics of BK at his reading.

Hey, folks. Just finished the last of yesterdays notes and I sit here in a slight fog because over my very busy theatre weekend I caught a slight cold. I have a headache and I'm a little stuffed up but I'll live.

Saw the Musicals in Mufti concert of Lucky Stiff. BK got a slight mention in the program saying that he had preserved the score on a Varese Sarbande recording. It was great fun. Mary Testa is a HOOT! I'll post more later because since it's slightly after 8am I really need to begin working for my real employer instead of playing at HHW.

The Disney Institute?  What was that?  I've never heard of it, but if it had something to do with the creation of new musicals, I'm fascinated.  You don't mean the ASCAP/Disney workshop which is run by ASCAP but located in Disney's commissary in Burbank?

Best fried chicken was at Mrs. Wilkes in Savannah on our honeymoon.

My mother's simple chicken recipe: mix the same amounts of honey and French's yellow mustard, add curry powder to taste.  Drizzle over chicken breasts and cook at 350 until done.  It doesn't taste like any of those ingredients but something wholly other.

Sorry I was E&T all weekend.  I never turned my computer on since I had so much else to do.  It's a busy day at work today, but I wanted to check in anyway  When I have a little time I'll read the weekend notes and posts.

One reason it was so busy was that I saw three shows.  I really enjoyed WICKED despite a few problems.  It was a lot more different from the book than I expected, but I think it will get reasonably good reviews and have a decent run.  When I have more time I'll try and post what I feel are the problems with the show.

NYCO's 1987 new production of THE MAGIC FLUTE was the first time that they had ever done it in German.  In 2003 it is the same production only now being sung in English.  Since the whole cast seems to have taken diction lessons from Patti LuPone they still used supertitles so you could understand what they were singing, and despite the diction the voices were excellent.  In either language it's a good production of one of my favorite operas.

Mufti is in it's 14th season and I have seen every show since the end of the 3rd.  I have rarely seen such great audience response as at LUCKY STIFF.  Per the discussion group the initial production was not successful because the staging was too busy.  In this reading without the sets and all the running around the sheer brilliance of the book and score came out helped by a cast that featured many of the original performers --- notably Mary Testa --- plus Malcom Gets.  (BK - since you are mentioned in the program notes I'm sending you a copy of the program)

Tonight we have tickets for the benefit to help find new jobs for dancers who have grown too old to dance.  It's a salute to Hollywood and some of the people appearing (some dancing, some not) are Cyd Charisse, Esther Williams, Ann & Bebe, Chita, et. al.  The late Donald O'Conner was initially scheduled to appear but  he will be honored by a special award.

Oh, gosh! I'm a fried chicken junkie. I've loved it my whole life, and the miracle is that I don't have off-the-charts cholesterol because I do eat a lot of the stuff, most of which I fry myself in my very own deep fat fryer. Sorry, but I just don't care for chicken which has been fried in the pan. I have my own recipe for batter, and I do like my fried chicken. (And being a Southerner, we're known for it. I also do a mean barbecued cornish game hen, but that's another story.)

In Charlotte, there is one place that makes fried chicken known far and wide: Price's Chicken Coop. I have to admit that even they beat my fried chicken. I wish I could get the recipe for their batter.

I like fried chicken an awful lot - but not the fact that it takes oh so healthy chicken and turns it into an indulgence.

My grandmother (Baba) had a recipe for fried chicken that involved soaking it in ORIGINAL whole evaporated milk and spices and then frying it TWICE.

Now she makes a "fake fried chicken" dish that includes the soaking and the breading - but it's baked, not fried.  IMHO it tastes about the same but the texture is a little different.

Jason, we should send Micheal Moore to your mouse-filled apartment.  I'm sure he will blame US foreign policy on your violent rage. :)

I am off to school and then work but will be back later!

Ooh I am going to receive Avenue Q and Zanna Don't today from Andrea - my cutoms cheater associate.

Did we pay customs fees?  No!  Thanks Jennifer for the hint! :)

Oooh, fried chicken is my favorite! Yep, yep, yum! My mom made the best fried chicken in the world, with mashed potatoes and gravy and oh golly, it was tasty! Of course she doesn't make it anymore  :'(   now it is all that healthy stuff like baked chicken breasts, which oddly enough is what I eat several nights a week for dinner myself because it is healthy and easy to make on my George Forman grill! LOL!

Matt H. are you a fan of Jeff Richard's? I saw your post yesterday referring to him in 7 BRIDES FOR 7 BROTHERS.
I wish I had a good pic of him to post. I will have to see what I can find!

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]  :D GOOD MORNING ONE AND ALL (and also all and one)! :D[/move]

Chicken: I'm partial to the Colonel's chicken myself. Original recipe. I also had the best Lemon Chicken at Mama Rose Restaurant in Costa Mesa, CA, last month. Very moist, not a dry spot on it. Mmm...delicious.

I'm very busy right now completing the Cabaret West Calendar for November. Two items that may be of interest for some Hainsies and Kimlets are:

Brent Barrett and Karen Mason will be appearing together at Osher-Marin JCC in San Rafael on November 22. Their website is marinjcc.com. Select Performing Arts when you get there and scroll down. Word of Warning: The description doesn't mention Brent but it did a month ago. I went to Brent's and Karen's sites and neither of them list the show. Best bet is to check with Osher-Marin directly.

110 in the Shade will be at the Pasadena Playhouse here in California from June 18-July 25, 2004. Their website is pasadenaplayhouse.org.

Gotta go! Have a great chat tonight!

P.S. I guess you are aware that practically all of Southern California is burning from wildfires. The ash and soot in the air reaches all the way to the coastline. Very scary.

DR JMK, that 110 X 150 refers to the pixel measurements of the photo. Do you want me to resize it for you? I'll be glad to try if you'd like.

DR MBarnum, yes, I've always had a thing for Jeff Richards. I first remember seeing him in an MGM B-movie called CODE TWO. He got killed in that movie, and I was not a happy camper. Obviously, he was merely serving out his MGM contract to be a part of SEVEN BRIDES  since he could neither sing nor dance. Nope, that's not his voice singing "Rock 'n' Roll Tumbleweed" in THE OPPOSITE SEX, but he looks good enough to eat in that movie.

Any pics of him you could find would be met by grateful eyes on this end.

You're right, I haven't seen ISLAND OF LOST WOMEN. I think probably the title would have scared me away before watching. Sounds like a Grade Z sci-fi 1950s flick even though I know it's not. I'll keep my eyes open for a showing of it.

I don't know why Jeff didn't get a TV cop show like HAWAIIAN EYE  or 77 SUNSET STRIP  in the 1960s. He had the looks for such shows.

Good morning to all.  :D
Hmm...chicken dishes...I'm a huge chicken fan..so let's do these by category
Chinese - There's a restaraunt near the university called Happy Dragon.  They sell the best orange chicken I have ever tasted.  Nice and crispy with a dark spicy orange sauce...mmm
Thai - Oddly enough, the best Thai food I've ever tried is in the Tacoma Mall, and their Pad Kee Mao with chicken is my absolute favorite.
Italian - Chicken and alfredo pizza from the Olive Garden.  I don't know if they still have it, but they did at one point, and it was to die for.
American - Can't go wrong with a good chicken salad sandwich
Not a huge fried chicken fan, actually.  In fact, I'm not overly fond of chicken breasts or wings.  There's a very good reason for this.  When I was younger, during high school, I had a job working in the kitchen of a retreat center.  One of the cook's favorite things to make was baked chicken with BBQ sauce.  As i was working with a bunch of veggies who refused to touch meat, I was ALWAYS the one who had to deal with bags of frozen chicken breasts, pulling off the skin and fat that was still frozen to the meat.  *shudder* As a result I spent the better part of those summers up to my elbows in raw chicken.  To this day I cannot eat chicken on the bone.  I like my chicken nicely cut up and covered in sauce, and devoid of any remnants of skin, bone, or cartilage.
There's my appetizing story for the day....  :P

Yum, chicken.  My mother made a few chicken dishes when I was growing up that I remember fondly - one was your basic shake-n-bake thing with drumsticks and Season-All.  It was very tasty.  When she got bored with that, she started marinating thighs or drumsticks in white wine, with garlic, sauteed onions, and rosemary.  She also made this Chinese dish where she'd cut chicken thighs into bite-sized pieces, marinate them in some kind of soy sauce thingamajig with green onions (I don't know what else was in it) and steam the whole thing.  It was fantastic mixed into a bowl of rice.  I was always partial to mom's chicken because she was better at cooking it than, say, pasta (ecch).

I am also partial to fried chicken, especially Popeye's, but I try not to eat it too much.  When I lived in London I ate a lot of chicken sandwiches from the Colonel, as I strangely found them much tastier there than stateside.  Once in a while I'll go for chicken tenders or nuggest from fast-food joints or diners, but I was so traumatized by that news story a few years back where this woman found a deep fried chicken head in her McNuggets that it's sort of put me off that kind of thing.

I am not generally fond of dishes like chicken parmigiana, but I went to a restaurant here in NYC called Carmine's where all the food is served in enormous family style portions, and the chicken parmigiana was out of this world.  The only trouble is amassing an army to help you eat it!  :)
Title: Re:THE MEAT OF THE NOTES
Post by: LC on October 27, 2003, 08:18:30 AM
Oh, I forgot a couple (now I have really made myself ravenous) - I very much like chicken katsu, which is Japanese-style fried chicken and a very popular meal in Hawaii.  And I like the marinated chicken you can get at Korean barbecue restaurants, where you cook your own food over hot coals at your table.  So good!

And now to jump to a completely unpalatable topic.. DR Jason, I am sorry the mice have invaded your bed.  We had the same problem in the previous apartment, and my roommate didn't sleep well for a month.  She also felt that a sacred line separating her bed from the rest of the apartment had been irreparably crossed.  Also, because we had loft beds in that apartment, it was all the more appalling that they climbed all the way up there.  I hate to trap mice, but I always preferred to use glue traps instead of the poison pellets because with the latter, the mice would eat the poison and then go elsewhere to die, and you'd have to follow the awful smell to find and dispose of them.  I hope those plug-in repellent things have some positive effect.

Have you checked for holes in the walls near your radiator?  Because the radiator was attached to the wall, our mice liked to chew their way in through there.  I also suspect that they came in through the stove pipes, but could never figure out how because the pilot light was always on.

I hope your lease is up soon and you can get the heck out of that apartment!

William E. Lurie:  I would LOVE to read about your reactions to "Wicked." When you do your report on what you feel are problems with the show, I think it would be really special to learn what you find praiseworthy, too.

Chicken:  One thing I've learned in my 55 years on earth is that when someone tells you some other meat "tastes just like chicken," it really DOESN'T!

My mother's fried chicken is my favorite thing in the whole world (join the club, right?).  She removes the skin, soaks the chicken in buttermilk, and then uses Bisquick for coating it.  "Sometimes," for a change, she'll mix corn meal into the Bisquick to give the crust an extra bite.

The best "other" chicken I've had was in Naples, Italy, near the villa I rented on a lake north of Naples.  There was a stretch of road...with various shops, etc.  Alongside the road, one of the shops set up a rotisserie and was cooking chickens, nicely spiced with the seasonings Italians use in all their cooking.  I bought a nice whole chicken for Lire 5,000 (at the time, that was about $4).  It was totally s-c-r-u-m-p-t-i-o-u-s.  I meant to share it with my cats at the time, but I had a change of heart and gave them their regular cat food before tearing into that succulence of roasted bird.

But my cats would have NONE of that....they literally climbed up my legs to get at that olfactory fabulousity.  I had to give them half the chicken.

Boy!  Were we a happy threesome!  The first time was best, of course, but all the other times were special, too.

Well I believe I have joined the 21st century and successfully uploaded my strangely fuzzy pic.  It turns out Picture It, when it resizes, does not reduce the pixel count, hence the huge white border (but at least I gave us all, or at least me, some personal space).  So I had to go to another picture editor to actually reduce pixels.  There, wasn't that fascinating?   ???

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Good morning DRs![/move]

What an appetizing topic of the day...I love chicken, and have been eating a lot of it lately.  In fact, my mom cooked chicken patties last night.  I love fried chicken (especially Popeye's) but try not to eat too much of it.  A girl sort of has to watch her figure, you know?  Chicken Parmagiana, chicken in wine sauce, General Tso's Chicken (taking a page from DR Jennifer), and mandarin chicken are other favorites...though I will not turn down a good box of Chicken McNuggets or a Crispy Chicken Sandwich from McDonald's.

Sandra--(from last night's posts)  I think writing a paper on how Da Vinci was not the ideal Renaissance Man is a great idea!  Hooray for contrariness! BTW....do you really think my pic looks a little like the Mona Lisa??  This is about the 3rd time I have heard this, and I'm beginning to question the idea of looking like a famous painting, hehe.

Ben--thanks for the report on Lucky Stiff!  I do need to buy the album one of these days....and I absolutely love Mary Testa.

Dan and Jrand--thanks so much for the compliments on my "review!"  Dan, I don't know if there's any place I could send my comments, though if I did, it would be anonymously of course.  WB...it's nice to see you post again, and I hope your computer troubles are at an end.

Jason--I LOVE that you put Wonder Woman as your pic!   ;D  So funny!

WEL--thanks for telling us about the recent shows (and opera) you saw!

LC--So nice to see a pic of you!  I think you are very pretty!

Hmmm...I guess I should go and get my sociology homework done...I'll try to post later, and I should be at the chat tonight...

Ciao, bellas! (and bellos)

JMK: Glad you got your photo to work - I have to take down the border post because it changed the size of that page, which pixels seem to do - damn them, damn them all to hell.  Mr. Mark Bakalor informed me that he'll answer questions as he can but that he doesn't want to be "tethered" to the board.  I think he got burned out from working so many hours to get this thing and the site working properly.  However, I think we can pretty much figure things out for ourselves from now on.

Favorite chicken: pineapple chicken (but not breaded too much).

OMG and a huge thank you to DR George.  Apparently we were having the exact same problem when trying to post pictures.

We would use "reply" (not quick reply), we would "browse", take our photo and it would 'attach' in the attach column. But when we'd preview it, nothing would happen. And the attach column would then be empty (above it would say attach: whatever our pic was).

DO NOT PREVIEW FIRST. I can't believe we didn't figure this part out sooner (DR Mark suggested it to George). I preview everything. I had no idea people weren't previewing first.

Why did nobody else think of this? :)

Oy.

Chicken is so versatile!  My favorite chicken dishes are:

Chicken Kiev--I just love the way the garlic butter bursts out when you first cut into it

Chicken Parmagiana--Yum!

Chicken roast on a Webber grill--I love the way those Webbers produce crispy skin and moist meat

Thank you all for your kind words of sympathy and encouragement. Like I said, I got about two hours of sleep (from 6:00 to 8:00), but I still feel violated and my skin crawls whenever I step foot in my apartment. That's a horrible feeling, but I'll get over it. I guess I sort of have to.

Things here at MTI are weird. We have A LOT of people out today from the clerical dept., which is what I normally do, but this week I'm answering the phones, so I'm E&T from filing, as well. As a matter of fact, I'm the only one answering phones today. We'll see how THAT goes.

Favorite chicken dishes? Hmmm...well, I do so love chicken in nearly any form.  I love, love, love my dad's fried chicken. He used to work for KFC, you know, so he does chicken right, and my mom takes care of the yummy side dishes that she does oh so well. The only side that my dad makes to accompany the chicken is the homemade gravy. Now my stomach is growling. They always make me a lovely fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes (with loads of yummy margarine), green beans with cayenne pepper, corn (which my mom creams herself--it's FANTASTIC), sauteed carrots, homemade biscuits and, of course, the gravy with the leftover crispies from the chicken mixed in. I want to go home...

I also enjoy a good chicken piccata, chicken marsala, fettucine alfredo with grilled chicken, Kentucky Fried Chicken (again with the fried), and my absolute favorite chicken sandwich and/or nuggets in the world--Chik-Fil-A.

MBarnum:  I have decided to cancel any and all future vacation plans, and instead spend every spare moment I have searching all of Washington State looking for Cal Bolder.  I wonder if the publisher of his novel could give any help in tracking him down?

Donna:  I am happy to know that Brent Barrett is still going to be in concert in California in November.  I had heard that he was going to have to cancel, because he had extended his run in Chicago.

Jason:  I was the one that apologized for taking your mouse house situation too lightly.  I am sorry you had such a miserable night last night, and hopefully with the help of the apartment's owner, tonight will be les miserable ( No groaning)

My favorite chicken recipe is one that my dear friend,   Lorna, used to make for me called Chicken Papprykarz (or popperkosh) with lots of sour cream and paparika and served with homemade dumplings.  Yum!!!!  She passed away suddenly last year, and the recipe was apparently one she kept in her head, and not on paper.

No, DR JMK, yours is not the only pic in slightly soft focus. Mine looks like I'm hiding a face lift (which I most definitely have NOT had nor will I), also due as bk suggested to the small size of the file. TCB: Don't feel bad...I took it lightly, too, until the gross little bugger crawled into my sleeping space. It's one thing for it to be on my floor...it's a whole other situation to have it where I sleep.

LC: I've been told I should lay out glue traps once the poison pellets have been out for a day or two...that way they'll be trapped while they're still alive as opposed to going off and dying somewhere where they'll stink. Dear Readers--

I think my house is cursed.  It started last month when the gizmo on my refrigerator that lets you get chilled water through the door stopped working.  Then a huge antique mirror I have fell off the wall.  (Luckily, there was no damage.  The screws that secured one of the hooks to the mirror frame pulled out of the wood.)  Then my automatic garage door opener stopped working and needed to be repaired.  At around the same time, the slab in my garage started to lift and sink in various places and break up.  Sure enough, I had a huge tree root growing in places where it shouldn't have been and I had to have the old slab busted out and a new slab poured.  Then, over the weekend, I heard noises from my hot water heater that I knew I should not have been hearing.  My plumber was just here and he informed me that I am in need of a new hot water heater.  What next?  All this reminds me of The Money Pit.

Item the First:

I have grave concern about BK biting the bullet – sounds extremely dangerous; obviously our esteemed BK has not graduated from an Eddie Eagle course.

Item the Second:

Chicken!

The most interesting chicken dish I ever had was after I spent the afternoon shooting the rapids at Pagsanjan Falls in the Philippines. Getting to dinner was half the fun. I was on a weekend tour filled with fellow sailors. Before the tour got underway, the guide suggested we bring no watches or jewelry and to put most of our folding currency in our sock – seems as how roving bandits often holds up the bus. On this encouraging note, we set off for the hinterlands south of Manila. One hint that you are getting “away from it all” is when you notice that there is no longer and electric wires running beside the highway (read dirt track). Another sight not common in California is the sight of Water Buffalo slogging thru the mucky fields with a local following behind with a curiously shaped wooden thingy (calling a “plow” would give it a dignity it did not deserve – (the wooden thingy, not the local). We made a brief noon stop at a village, which prided itself on its woodcarvings. We were given a fascinating tour of the local factory.

OSHA ALERT! Dangerous work practices ahead!

The factory was dark and gloomy (probably due to the lack of electricity) and when your eyes adjusted to the gloom, you could see the native workers sitting barefoot on the floor while they hacked away at a log of mahogany clutched between their naked feet (somehow “clutching” seems a strange verb to use when referring to feet, but, whatever). And to my great wonderment, before we left, we were given an opportunity to make a purchase (the selections ranged from Madonnas (The Blessed Mother, not the Material Girl), through elaborate crucifixes (prop material for Exorcist or Omen), to small statues with enormous endowment, the term “tumescent” comes to mind, (prop material for the Devil in Miss Jones).

The rickety old bus then commenced a lengthy mountain climb to our destination (The Inn of the Unflushables) just in time for the afternoon festivities.

PETA ALERT! Disgusting animal abuse ahead.

For our delight we were treated to a series of cock fights (razor equipped bandy roosters in a dirt pit, not naked randy gay men in bath house).

For the evening banquet we were served not-still-living chicken. It was a Philippine version of baked road kill with roasted veggies. (This bird was so malnourished it made a free-range chicken look like a butterball turkey – think large, scrawny pigeon.) There was little meat on the foul fowl, so one resorted to stripping the bones with ones teeth (whilst singing “Henry the Eighth I Am”). Actually the meat was quite flavorful, if not adequately portioned. Inasmuch as two of my dinner companions were still concerned about the fate of the afternoon contestants, I had a chance to strip two more of god’s creatures to get my fill.

The next day was a glorious trip in a canoe, shooting the rapids through a primeval jungle gorge with cascades of orchids lining the walls. See here (http://www.aenet.org/pagsan/pagsan.htm) for details.

Since this is a chicken story, I’ll end my tale at this point. (The next day’s culinary extravaganza was a pit-roasted boar.)

So you mean I could have known this yesterday? :)

If you want to test a message, you can send another to me.

Ha, that is one of the only features here I got on the first try :)

How bizarre that people who preview (and try to make sure their posts are errorfree) would get penalized.

Actually, I think I would have figured this out today on my own. IT was something DR RonP said when trying to help me.  I asked what appeared on his screen during previewing a picture. And he said he'd never done it that way.

I'm sitting here in the library during lunch, and I'm SOOO bored. My voice is halfway coming back, this morning I boiled water and inhaled the steam for about an hour. It seemed to have helped, as I went from mute to speaking. Right now a bunch of girls who are fasting for Ramadan are giggling VERY loudly next to me and keep saying "SHHHHHHHHH" very loudly and I'm getting very annoyed. I realize that they can't eat for religious reasons, so they're coming in here for lunch, but they could at least be courteous to those of us who are...working...:)

My favorite food in the WHOLE world is mashed potatos. (If I spelled that wrong, I'm sorry. I'm in a bit of a rush.) I LOOOVE them! ANd fried chicken is OK, but it's not my favorite. I'll post more later IF I can, we'll see.

WB Sandra! I'm writing a paper on Leo too, and I'm not enjoying it one bit. I would try to make it interesting like you did, but my teacher is a royal pain in the butt, and she'd probably fail me. Not that she GAVE us the topic, I can write about whatever I want, but she grades opinions, and she's not in the greatest of moods.

Apparently, Leo DV was arrested at age 24 for having sex with an animal. In public.

Aren't I full of useful information? I'm typing really fast, so if this is full of typos, I'm sorry. Can't be caught doing non-research in the library. Librarians are evil. I'm being stared down at this very moment by one, and I feel like hiding. Scary!

Oh and I got my choir dress for show choir, and it's be-yoooo-tiful. Fun stuff.

I can handle a refrigerator konking out after 20 years (happened to me in summer of 2002) or the pipes under my sink finally needing replacing after 22 years (happened three weeks ago), but to have one thing after another happen is just SO galling. Between today's topic (and the constant talking about FOOD here on HHW), Juliana's Journal, and watching "Sex and the City", I'm constantly hungry!!!  Favorite chicken has got to be fried chicken and Sesame Chicken.  However, lately, lunch has been chicken nuggets dipped in BBQ ranch dressing.  It's heaven.

For those DR's who have listened to "Zanna, Don't" what is your reaction, content wise, music wise?  IMHO, (Internet lingo for... oh you know) while shows with gay content are always fun to have, one that is in your face as much as the music is from "Zanna Don't" is a bit over the top for my taste.

I don't care much for Zanna Don't.  It's a good IDEA for a musical, rather than a good musical.  And when your main character is an angel (or something like that) well, nothing interesting is going to happen to him.

On the other hand, Avenue Q is, as I've been saying now for four and a half years, the real deal.  A musical comedy that actually makes you laugh.  Who could ask for anything more?

Didn't see Zanna, Don't but I have to admit that when I heard about it, I thought it was not a show for me, only because it would seem the whole idea will run dry pretty quickly. I was surprised at the excellent reviews and the length of the run. I'm glad it was successful, but I still don't know if I would enjoy it.

I think I have a CD of this show!  I got it from Footlight.com and there are a couple or three live tracks in amongst the studio recording.  It's been a while since I listened to it.  I'm very interested in hearing how it goes.

About chicken dishes:  Schwann's frozen food people have a Southwestern Style Chicken Meal Kit (everything, including the chicken, is in one bag--just heat and serve) that's very good.  It has "tender chicken breast strips with long grain rice, black beans, cut corn, bell pepper strips, and fire roasted onions [and is] seasoned with a mild salsa sauce."  Very good and very low fat.  Otherwise, I like the Dairy Queen chicken strip basket.  Very bad for you, but very good tasting (when the chicken is fresh).

When I look there now I see today's date. But when I see the news about Juliana's journal, isn't that yesterday's news (cause I read them then).  Since there have been new entries everyday it's hard to know when the "news" is from today or yesterday. It was such a relief to find that der Brucer was writing about real chicken.  He wouldn't let me look over his shoulder while he was writing his post.  (If he had, there wouldn't have been as many typos, but that's something else again.   ;D)

When it comes to fried chicken, I've been having very good luck with Alton Brown's recipe. (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_15279,00.html)  I admit, the first time I tried it I didn't have any buttermilk on hand, but I did have some plain yogurt, which I thinned with milk, and it came out fairly good that way, but it works better with buttermilk.

Chicken, it seems, goes with practically everything flavorwise.  It would probably even go well with jelly beans, although I haven't tried it yet.  But there is one thing chicken does not go well with, and that is der Brucer's daughter, who will not eat chicken under any circumstances.  It's a food phobia, impossible to explain and irritating as hell.  Once, when der Brucer was cooking dinner for her family (I wasn't there, this is from his report), he was serving something totally innocent like pork chops with Stove Top Stuffing.  The store was out of pork flavored stuffing, however, so he bought chicken flavor instead.  The conniption fit she threw when she discovered that it was chicken flavor stuffing was frightening, to say the least.  "I can't eat that, it has CHICKEN in it!"  Has anyone ever explained to this demented lassie that most canned soups have chicken stock in them?  That eggs come from chickens?  That chicken is used in all sorts of processed foods, and that the only way to avoid chicken entirely is to prepare dinners from scratch, which would be healthier for her to try but she's too lazy?

Sheesh!

That's one reason I can't wait to get to the East Coast, so that I can teach her two sons what real food, and real chicken, tastes like.  Food is not something to be afraid of, it should be embraced...well, metaphorically speaking, the laundry bills get hefty when the embracing is actual.

That doesn't make the devastation from the brushfires easier to take today than from before.  From what I've read, over 800 homes have been lost so far.  Some of this was preventable; when it became clear that we were going to get little rain this year, people should have been more careful and cleared away the dead brush around their homes.  Unfortunately, too often people don't take precautions like that, and when the fires start, homes are lost.  And even those who took precautions themselves have been threatened by the fires.

I've been absolutely sickened by reports that looters have come into neighborhoods where residents have been evacuated.

The fires themselves are only the first part of the devastation, however.  During the coming winter and spring, there is a real danger of mudslides when the rains hit, because the ground cover won't have had a chance to grow in to protect the soil.  I remember this from a brushfire that hit the foothills of Burbank when I was a twig/sprig.  The street I lived on was lucky, as the rain runoff skipped us due to a geographic quirk, but many homes nearby that had escaped fire damage were hit by torrents of water and mud, bringing a second round of woe.

Here's hoping none of the DRs ever have to go though this in their lives.

So now I have a new dumb question--why is my picture fuzzy when everyone else's is sharp as a tack.  Even that pic I put in the post is sharp.  But my profile pic isn't.  This isn't a Dorian Gray type thing is it, because I am feeling a little fuzzy this morning.  :P

The user image you've uploaded is 95 pixels wide by 123 pixels tall. The forum stretches your image to meet the pixel size format of 100x150 pixels. Your photo is fuzzy because the image is stretched to meet that guidline.

Just a quick hello to let you all know I'm alive and thinking about you...haven't read any of the weekend stuff or even the notes yet, but I will, BK, I certainly will!  I've just been slapped with a ridiculous amount of work which I will NEVER be able to finish by the time I leave on DECEMBER 12 -- Yes, that's right, I've chomped down on the bit and given my notice here at the Law Firm, and as of December 12 I am selectively employed (=temping) and will be back on the market for casting in any number of theatrical productions!  But until then....grr....lots of grueling, tedious WORK, so I will be E&T for a while.

Love,
Joy

Hell DR's! I have not yet caught up on the weekend, but  am quite pleased to see that the posts are flying so fast and furious. Reminds me of the summer of 2002, when we often passed 200 posts. Of course, we used many 1-word posts at that point, so perhaps it didn't count!

DR Jay - The Money Pit indeed....sometimes I think if one part of the house gets attention, the other parts get jealous and start acting up!  :-\

Jeff Richards - I have heard that Miss Julie Newmar was upset at having him for her "brother-partner" in 7B47B because she was a trained dancer and was left out of most of the dance-action.  "He was a baseball player!" she exclaimed.

I like his scenes in The Opposite Sex and his scene in 7B47B with Jane Powell when he explains to her that he and his brothers are leaving because there is nothing for them on the farm is very well done!

I got a nice Playbill from DR DinT today1  ;D  And a couple of DVD's Swing Kids and Newsies.

and wanted to post before I go off to do homework and then go to class!  It's soo rainy here in Northern VA.  Blech.

Jennifer--Are you the non-bride in the pic?  I think you look very purty!   ;D

Jay--I'm sorry to hear about all the house woes.  Unfortunately, I can relate.  My family's house is kind of old and it seems that every month or so something goes wrong and we end up paying a lot of money to fix it.  And I won't even get into the financial pain that our friendly local HOA inflicts on us!

Joy--I wish you the best of luck for the future pavement-pounding.  I've heard you sing, of course, and I really do think you have the talent to go far!

Swishy--Glad to hear the voice is on the mend!  Feel better soon, and also find ways to keep posting!  Our Swishy is nothing if not resourceful.

TCB--"Goth Maya Lisa???"  hahahahah! Okay, it is really time for me to change my pic...I have one saved on the hard drive where I actually look happy!

Jay: Sorry about your house woes.  I really feel that when things go wrong, they always go wrong all at once.  It's like someone knows when all the warranties expired!

Jason: I would still rather throw out a live mouse stuck to a glue trap than one who's had its neck snapped in a trap.  (I got a lot of practice doing that, too.)  For some reason the dead ones gross me out more than the live ones.  I think you should just borrow my cat.  :)

I absolutely loved Avenue Q, it's been my favorite show this year!  I enjoy any show that can make me laugh that much, and I really liked the music.  I have friends coming to visit in a couple of weeks and they've asked me to pick out a show, so I'm torn between taking them to something I haven't seen yet, or going to see Ave Q again.

About Lloyd Bridges. I was heartsick that my cable service didn't add TV LAND to its channel tier until after TV LAND had run Lloyd's one season anthology series. I LOVED that show which featured him in a dizzing array of roles. Argh!

Correct, THE OPPOSTE SEX has not been issued on DVD, and I'm not expecting it any time soon. The trailer for it is on THE WOMEN DVD, but that's as close as we'll get for awhile. My laserdisc of the film features awful Metrocolor that's already pale and lifeless, and the geniuses at MGM/Turner who made the laserdisc transfer lopped off a little of the sides of the Cinemascope frame, so the framing is off, too. (MGM/Turner did similar horrendous things with their first pressings of BRIGADOON and SEVEN BRIDES on laserdisc as well. Boo! Hiss!)

Mmm... I find it hard to go wrong with chicken.  Just so good so many ways.  Love a good chicken parmigiana, herb-roasted chicken, chicken burritos with salsa verde, or a good ol' chicken salad sandwich.  And I actually find the McChicken surprisingly edible.  I don't know from Popeye's, as there aren't any in my area.

BTW....do you really think my pic looks a little like the Mona Lisa??  This is about the 3rd time I have heard this, and I'm beginning to question the idea of looking like a famous painting, hehe.

Hey, it's better than looking like Whistler's Mother, no?

Does anyone remember when they got rid of McChicken sandwiches in the US for a few years?  That was my favorite snack at McDonald's and I was so traumatized.  I was so happy when they brought them back, and as part of the dollar menu, no less.  I much prefer them to the crispy or grilled chicken sandwiches.

I went downstairs for dinner, and what was on the table, but fried chicken! Since I am obviously not supposed to be here, my mom did NOT know we had been discussing this, so it was very weird indeed. And then someone brought food to the table, and it was put semi-in front of me. Out loud, I said "What is it, fish?", and my whole family just looked at me as though I was crazy. The influence HHW can have on a person.

I am scrounging for pictures to post. There are now more pictures of me on my computer, but I'm afraid I'm being a girl and also being picky, and I hate every one of them. The new ones are from HC and they're nice, but I can't ever smile correctly in pictures (forced smiling is NOT my thing), and so I look very pained. Plus, I have red eye, and my dress is reflecting the flash (VERY sparkly). So unless my school's website puta a picture of me during HC week up, there are still none of me that I'm willing to share. You'll survive though, one of these days, I'll get one up.

DST isn't affecting me well. It's only 6:30 and I'm exhausted. My dad might not be home until LATE tonight, so maybe I'll pop into chat for a small while. If I'm awake. Now, off to do the dreaded Algebra HW. Eh.

OH! I remembered what I wanted to say EARLIER! Report cards come out at the beginning of next week, or maybe even on Friday. If my Algebra grade meets standards, I might be able to get online. "Legally", anyway. So keep them vibes comin'.

I'm finally back from work. It turned out to be kind of a rough day...everyone seemed to be in rotten moods, including myself due to my total lack of sleep. I schlepped through the rain and bought myself one of those electric mouse repellers. Aren't they supposed to emit sounds on such a high frequency that humans can't hear it? Well, I CAN hear it, but I'm not going to complain if it will help to rid this apartment of vermin and pests.

MBarnum: Where do you work to have such a cool boss?? My boss today brought me some gourmet cookies. Then he told me to put them on a plate and serve them to the guy he had a meeting with. :\

LC: I want a cat so bad!! I'd love the company, and the whole mouse-catching thing wouldn't be so bad, either. (And I'd rather throw out a dead one...if it were still alive I'd keep thinking it was going to jump off and get on me!) Where in the City do you live? We live so close and yet we've never met!

For those of you who might be interested, I was sorting mail today at work and came across a contract for a concert orchestration of "Agony" from INTO THE WOODS and who's signature was on the contract but our very own Brent Barrett's! He is apparently the acting president of some Broadway Tenors group and is putting together a concert. I should have ripped it off the paper and framed it. Or better yet...the check that he signed to pay for the contract!!

Indeed, the cold has forced me to break out the next heavier coat. I have only one coat thicker than this. Luckily, the current coat seems to be working quite well against the cold-it is down, or an excellent synthetic version thereof.

I would like to hear what a concert version of Agony would sound like-I am so used to that orchestration (not to mention it being sung as a duet.) Would one call Brent Barrett a tenor? I think of him as more baritone-y.

Per Mr. Nruce Kimmel instructions. I am posting my first of two posts fter leaving chat.

When I got home last night in the mail was a DVD i won on Ebay. It was a film adaptation of Noel Coward's Relative Values. Even Julie Andrews couldn't save the film! No wonder it was never released in the USA! It went straight to STARZ/Encore. What a waste. The weakest link were the American actors William Baldwin and Jeanne Triplehorn. A disappointment.

And Julie was costumed so  god awfu; that made her look a lot wider than she really is and the makeup person should have been shot.

The movie was shot on The Isle of Man. The only one that I am aware of.

For some reason I was hoping the talk was about Meat Loaf when I saw the title.  Aww well.  But I enjoyed the chat.  It went a bit to fast for me and for some reason, even though I have Road Runner--it kept hanging up/got stuck for me.  First time that has ever happened.  Maybe because there were so many people in the room.

The chat cut a rapid pace this evening...eighteen peope carrying on six or seven conversations and everyone managing to keep up somehow.

Folks are dropping out to eat, but there's still seven or eight folks chattering away.

Tom from OZ....YOU OUGHT TO GO IN AND SAY "G'DAY!"

You can totally do this now, yes???!!!

Patience is a virtue–possessed by none.  No one ever seems to remember the second half to that old saying.  Am I the only one?   ;)

And with that, I'm off to bed.

Have a GREAT evening all!

Wow!  Chat tonight was sooo much fun, and incredibly well-attended!  I only just signed off and I think it's still going strong (oh, a Hello Dolly reference!)

Emily--your pic is adorable

Swishy--Good vibes!  (Sorry I'm too tired to play around with smilies and fonts and things)

LC--I agree about the Piano Teacher.  Extremely difficult to watch, but Huppert tore my heart out.  It's funny how different she is in 8 Women!

And with this, I must tear myself away and do my homework!  Goodnight all!

td:  What the hell kind of food is that in your picture?  I assume it is chicken (and pasta), but it looks green.

Jed: Come on down to Tacoma sometime, and we can try Popeye's together.  We have one, not far from the Tacoma Mall, but I have never tried it.

Sorry I missed chat, but I had a really good rehearsal tonight for  Oliver.  It was an all music rehearsal, and it was all of my songs, so I was the star and I loved it.  But God, how can we still have almost seven weeks of rehearsals to go???  Couldn't we try using Munchkins instead of children.  I am sure they would learn things much more quickly than Fagin's boys.  And besides, from what I have read, they really liked to party.

So sorry to have missed what sounds like a wonderfully wonderful chat!  Ah well, rehearsal does interfere at times.

As good as chicken sounded tonight after all the sumptuous dishes discussed here today, I already had some hamburger thawed, so it was a taco night here.

According to blockbuster.com, our local store does have The Piano Teacher (a pleasant surprise, given the dismal state of their foreign section), so I'll be sure to pick it up soon.  Foreign films are a real downside to living in Eastern Washington (far from a cultural mecca).  For example, I have been unable to find Umbrellas of Cherbourg in any video store in the 3 towns in which I've lived!  Arrgghhh!!!

Addendum - Actually, now that I think back, there was one fabulous independantly-owned video store in my home town that did have "...Cherbourg," (this is how I saw the film in the first place) but that store sadly closed about 6-7 years ago after losing too much business to the evil national chain stores (which have crappy selection if you want something older than 1998).

Here's my 2nd obligatory after-chat-post:

After I left chat (early, at about 6:30--it was quite sparkling and lively and one had to be quite quick with the typing) I went to a class at the local Y, then I went to my sister's house for dinner.  Our parents were there as well, so there was a sparkling and lively chat in person.  I'm now at home and "Reno 911" (on Comedy Central) just ended.  These people (on Reno 911) are so stupid, but so funny.  This is my new favorite show.  I especially love the improvisation aspect of it.  "Life With Bonnie" is also mostly improvised and I love that show, too.  After "Reno 911" is "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" which also is pretty darned funny.

Good morning... Yes, it's late/early... 3:15a.m.-ish  (3:15 Amish?)... I was back home in Richmond for my day off, but now I'm back up in Fairfax.  I decided to make the drive tonight instead of having to wake up at 5:00, and dealing with the horrible traffic on I-95 for 15 miles!  So, now I just have to wake up 7:00, and deal with about a 5 mile stretch of bad traffic.

The baking went well... I only got one pumpkin cheesecake, oatmeal cookies and chocolate "crack-ups" done.  I had hoped to make another cake, but time and energy and motivation didn't seem to materialize.  In any case, I have plenty of baked goods.  I just hope the cheesecake tastes all right - after I put it in the oven, I realized I had forgotten the vanilla!  Horror of horrors!  I'm sure it will be fine.  At least now I'll have a chance to compare and contrast.  ;-)

As for chicken dishes - I had a WONDERFUL fried chicken breast at a great little bistro in Middleburg, VA last summer.  There were bits of lemon zest and basil in the breading.  Soooo good.  And it was a free-range chicken breast, bone-in - very flavorful.  But the extra "zing" in the breading really made the dish.

Well, I do have to be up in a few hours... So glad to see some of you in chat... And I'm so sorry I've been so errant and truant lately.  CAMELOT is going well, but I'm in the middle of editing and proofing orchestra parts - we have first read next Tuesday(!!!!).  So, time is precious.

Bonne nuit.
