Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both active and brainy, and now it is time for you to post until the active, brainy cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: OPPUGN!
-
First post after BK!
-
T.O.D.
I must confess that I am pretty ignorant when it comes to the Big Bands.
Glenn Miller
Benny Goodman
-
First post after TCB!
-
BK, congrats on getting Jason Graae for the Kritzerland show!

Thursday! I am wearing a nice shoulder bag with my chemo pump inside....until tomorrow at 2 p.m. Then I am free for two whole weeks!
-
DR JEANNE I am sorry to report that the Mercury retrograde in Leo and Virgo will continue until September 5! And of course we have the eclipse right in the middle of it.....
Try to avoid major purchases until after that date - expect computer, appliance, and automobile glitches as well. Communications will be slow or interrupted.....
But other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, the play will be great!
-
DR JEANNE my first round of chemo was 3000 mg of Xyloda a day in pill form. It was taken during my 28 radiation treatments. The liquid chemo regimen that I am now on is called Folfox, a combination of Leucovorin Calcium (Folinic Acid), Fluorouracil, and Oxaliplatin given by infusion through my newly installed port. The first two are given at the hospital in a two hour session, the third over the next 46 hours by a pump.
And that is my story and I am sticking to it!
-
Lovely notes. I feel for Mr DOUG. I go through the same thing every year with the group I have been with since 1979.....
There are so many IDIOTS.....and when I suggest a couple of shows like BUS STOP and SEND ME NO FLOWERS.....they argue and complain and gripe and we end up with THE MOUSETRAP and BAREFOOT IN THE PARK....and of course ANNIE.....not to mention BEAUTY & THE BEAST....
Oh well....maybe I will still be sick....HA.
-
Well this is quite a rant day for me.....I shouldn't get up at 5:30 a.m.
-
Great notes.....
TOD:
Glenn Miller, Bob Crosby, Tex Beneke and so many others.....
Doris Day, Jo Stafford, Ella Mae Morse, Betty Hutton, The Pied Pipers
Here's a later recording from Ella Mae that I love:

DR vixmom, what an incident-crammed day you had yesterday! I am quite happy to hear about it.

Last night I had a dream about an apartment scam, I remember little about it except that I was planning to climb out a second storey window.
I also dreamed I was vomposing music, but I think that was a different dream.

Shameless self-promo plug - Maybe they should do THE LAST STARFIGHTER musical, now that the "suitable for all ages" Family version is available

or maybe discuss doing LAST STARFIGHTER, and wind up doing ANNIE!

I can appreciate the conventional big bands (Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, etc.), but I've never felt passionate about them. Being of my parents' generation, they weren't that exciting to me, though I know the arrangements and performances are great. That feeling is a deep seated one from childhood.
BK zeros in on the single most amazing one: Duke Ellington. The music was so forward looking it still sounds "modern" and electrifying. His are masterful compositions and I'm sure I haven't heard the half of it. The score to Anatomy of a Murder is killer, and I wish he'd composed for more films. His suites and such...well, I said it before and I'll say it again...they're electrifying.

Happy belated birthday DR Vixmom!

Good morning to all

DR Vixmom that is so nice that your co-workers did that for you. You deserve it.

DR Ginny it sounds like you had as nice a day as was possible. Glad the service was nice and that so many family and friends were there.

Two!
-
Good morning, all.
-
Happy gas and vibes for JRand.
-
So, what milestone or millstone was it, Vixmom?
-
TOD
Bands:
Artie Shaw
Benny Goodman
Duke Ellington
Count Basie
Glenn Miller
Singers:
The Andrews Sisters
Tex
Ella with Chick Webb
Peggy Lee
Special shoutout to one of my all-time favorite songs: Cole Porter's Leader of a Big-time Band
And say what you will of the movie, but the soundtrack to New York, New York with Georgie Auld on sax is killer.

So, what milestone or millstone was it, Vixmom?
Psst, it's on the HHW calendar. I had to look, because I thought it was a much younger milestone.
-
Thursday morning greetings! I slept better last night than I have in a week, but still not ready to set the world on fire. Maybe I'll do a little grocery shopping today and this evening go to the August meeting of my book group.

Thank you, DR Jennifer.

Thank you, also, to DRs Vixmom and TCB for their kinds words from last night.

I am very pleased DC Nicky is feeling better.
-
I will add the Dorsey brothers, Tommy and Jimmy, to the wonderful bands already mentioned.
-
While not as great, there was Ozzie Nelson.

This would be the result, I have no doubt DR FJL.
-
DR VIXMOM I loved your photos from yesterday and your birthday commentary! It was most joyful!

Thanks for the comments everyone. So far so good today.
DR JOHN G how could I forget the Andrews Sisters!
-
Good morning
-
Back at school trying to organize my life.
-
I saw the National tour of Something Rotten last night. Very clever and fun. Act one seemed tedious, but the rest was great. Nice to see an "original" show for once.
-
I'm up, I'm up - six-and-a-half hours of sleep and have already picked up the Freshly package. The cold packs were fine and working so I suppose it's all fine.
-
I remember offering to do The Last Starfighter at LACC a decade ago. There was no interest from the authors whatsoever. :)
-
I remember offering to do The Last Starfighter at LACC a decade ago. There was no interest from the authors whatsoever. :)
That was then, this is now. :)
IIRC, we were even trying to get it done through the L.A. New Musicals Festivals back then.
Maybe it was a matter of not having the materials ready (???), because this was quite a major undertaking by the YouthPlays staff to get the materials ready for licensing once they'd accepted the show.
-
Or maybe I have the years mixed up.
-
Could have been done easily, my friend. But, that was then and now is now :) This was after the Festival, which BTW, was never a Festival like NYMF - they're still around doing the nothing they've been doing for a decade now.
-
I looked back at old emails. When the Village Theatre in Washington State did their workshop in 2008, and had an option on a production, they had originally wanted that production (if they'd done one) to be a West Coast premiere. But they never went on to do that production. Maybe that was part of the decision?
The talks with the L.A. festival were in 2009, which I remember only because the talks were at exactly the same time as B.D. had done Skip's show HERRINGBONE in La Jolla, and the Festival had tried to make some arrangement to associate HERRINGBONE and STARFIGHTER with the Festival.
-
But even in talking with the festival, that L.A. festival was just talking about doing STARFIGHTER at a high school, and we were interested in that as a step towards seeing how the show could work from a licensing point of view.
L.A.C.C. would have been much more prestigious than a high school, I would think. Or was it that we would have had to raise the $$$ for LACC?
-
Page 3 reminiscing dance!
-
Oh wait, we'd deliberately excluded California in our contract with the Village Theatre, so they just would have had the NW premiere, we should have been able to do a production in California.
Ah well, maybe we chose the Festival over LACC?
Of course, it would be great now! Shoulda, woulda, etc.
-
Well, at least that got us to page 3!
-
No, there would have been no cost to you at all. Perhaps it was the Village that was the problem.
-
Just had the telephonic conversation - it was actually very nice and surprised me.
-
Our tire arrived and, with luck, we can drive away with our car by two. The lock on our loaner is locking fine but difficult to unlock. We are sitting in the car, parked in the shade, wondering what to do ::)
-
Our tire was late due to the excessive traffic from people heading out for a long weekend to be in a prime spot for the full eclipse. We had expected to be home ahead of the traffic. Now we will likely spend the night in Eugene instead of fighting the Portland rush hour traffic.
-
Thanks for the comments everyone. So far so good today.
I am happy you feel ok.
CONTINUED FEEL FINE VIBES!
-
Back at school trying to organize my life.
Have a good school year.
-
I wish the person sitting in the car next to us was playing Big Band music instead of reggae.
-
Glad the call went well, BK

The three cartons have arrived at Miami University. Big sigh of relief.

I read that as "cartoons" - I hate these new glasses

When I was in high school, I spent a summer in Barcelona, living with a family. Their apartment was just a couple of blocks off Las Ramblas, where today's cowardly act of terror occurred. Heart very heavy now.

George, Cheryl Bentyne of Manhattan Transfer is raising money for a Sondheim album.

I haven't read the details yet. Our time in Barcelona was wonderful.

(and it The Manhattan Transfer! ;) )

Back from a haircut - was hoping I could just go directly to picking up some packages but alas they haven't been delivered yet and since it's Amazon's own delivery service, that yokel, like Ontrac, likes to wait until the end of the day.

We are in OUR car and heading north 😊

Just had the telephonic conversation - it was actually very nice and surprised me.

MR BK I am glad that the cloven hoof of negativity has been rendered down into gelatin.

Great news, Jane!

Thank you. It has not been totally uneventful but mostly annoyances. The car is not right though, which we were informed when we collected it. We have spoken to the dealership in Vancouver and they will call later to let us know when we can take it in to be repaired They are concerned it will require a good amount to of work and time.
-
Thanks George.

Picked up some packages containing CDs of Duke Ellington. I'm putting them into iTunes now - unfortunately Gracenote is down so I'm having to enter all the info myself - I went to the Gracenote site because when you try to retrieve info you get a nice notice saying it's YOUR fault and to connect to the Internet - so I wrote them an amusing little missive on their site suggesting that if I was on their site I WAS on the damn Internet and that they should learn to shoulder the blame when they are at fault. I'll wait before uploading the rest to see if it's back later. Meantime I listened to the first of them - fantastic album called New Orleans Suite - one of his later albums on Atlantic - I prefer the sound on the classic Columbia and RCA albums, but the music is great. Now playing, Ellington 66, an album of his arrangements of pop songs of that year or years close to that year. It's very outre hearing a Beatles song done a la Ellington, but I like it and the sound is amazing - originally on Reprise.
-
Good evening!
-
We have arrived in Eugene 😊😊😊😊
-
Yay, Jane.
-
Four!
-
So, I've been (mostly) listening to the DVD version of Judy Collins' A Love Letter to Stephen Sondheim (https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01M8PK4HG/), and I've got the last four songs left to go. I've noticed three glaring mistakes. One is that the back cover uses the title, "I Remember Sky," but the official title is, "I Remember." Then during her comments, she said that George Furth wrote the book to Follies. ::) And the last...interesting...thing (not really a mistake, per se) is when she sings "The Road You Didn't Take," she sings this:
You're eye-ther a poet
Or you're a lover
Or you're the famous
Benjamin Stone.
You take one road,
You try one door,
There isn't time for any more.
One's life consists of ee-ther/or.
;)
-
Yay, Jane.
😊
-
We are headed out for a walk and dinner to a restaurant we have been told has a good bar.
-
With luck it won't be be too far from Voodoo donuts ;)

The concert was nice. I didn't pay it too much attention to catch the Road You Didn't Take mistake but I caught the other two.
-
I just finished watching the interview portion. She said that the son of "Oscar Hammerstein Jr." was "Jamie Hammerstein Jr."
-
But otherwise, it was all enjoyable enough. I've seen her live here in Olympia, and what I noticed then was that she didn't have a bottle of water with her at all and she stood for the whole concert. She didn't meander around, sit and then stand, or anything like that. She planted herself in one spot and played from there.
-
I didn't mind that she used a stand with they lyrics. I figured that she probably never performed any of his songs before (except for "Send in the Clowns"), and since it's probably a one-off concert for a PBS pledge drive, she didn't need to memorize every single word. Plus she's old and been performing for a very long time. She's earned the right to look at the lyrics if she wants! :D
-
And since we're so close...
-
Gratuitous Post #100!
-
And on that note (C-natural), I'm leaving work and heading home.
Be back later.

Good evening.

As the song goes:
I say ee-ther and I say eye-ther
And I say nee-ther and I say nigh-ther
Ee-ther, eye-ther, nee-ther, nigh-ther
I've looked at words from both sides now.

Sometimes Judy Collins can sing just a bit OFF key.....
-
Sometimes Judy Collins can sing just a bit OFF key.....
I like your last line better than mine.
-
Did some viewing - finished the Hitchcock Hour set and watched some Twilight Time stuff.
-
I like both Fred and Jack's take. Though after the past week, I don't know that I ever want to hear Both Sides Now again.
-
I've got 50 pages left in my latest Balzac, The Black Sheep. Either I'll finish or sleep will finish me off.
-
Listening to the Duke of Ellington. I've heard four albums so far - they're all interesting, of course, but the least interesting are his outre takes on popular songs of the 60s, and his Mary Poppins cover. The great ones are the "suite" CDs and is "hits" CDs, whether old or new - those are just amazing. Right now listening to his RCA recording, Far East Suite - one of the most amazing-sounding CDs ever.
-
Hello all I finished my work and was out of the office about 6:30
-
Then I gassed up the car
-
Got home and cleaned it up a bit....I stopped at Walmart on my way to work this morning and bought new carpet pads for the car
-
Took out the garbage
-
Did a little laundry
-
Ate my leftovers from dinner last night
-
Then Vixdad got home and we watched Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
-
Then I took a shower and washed my hair
-
And now I'm going to bed
-
I plan to be up by 4:30 and on the road by 5:30.
-
Virginny here I come
-
I, too, must put gas in the motor car so the tank is full for the trip to Coachella.
-
Virginny here I come
Have a great trip and don't get hit by flying metal.
-
Motor car has been filled with gas and I'm listening to the Duke at Tanglewood with Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops - for a live recording, amazing. All the hits all the time, but what hits and with a symphony orchestra to boot.
-
I have to say, The Mooch is one of my all-time favorite pieces of music. I HATE to say that the first time I ever heard it was in the movie The Cotton Club. I was uneducated, Ellington-wise, and had never seen Ain't Misbehavin'.
-
Bruce, have a fantastic Friday!
-
Ella Fitzgerald is my favorite female singer.
-
I like both Fred and Jack's take. Though after the past week, I don't know that I ever want to hear Both Sides Now again.
I really like Susan Egan's uptempo version:

-
I am relaxing. Robert Yacko called and said the run-through for lights and sound went very well - he also said I'll probably want to adjust a few things, and knowing me I probably will.
-
Last week (or was it earlier this week?), my friend Kris (stage manager extraordinaire and former TAO board member) asked if I would be able to run sound for Olympia Little Theatre's next production, Silent Sky.
-
I don't have anything specific coming up, so I told her, "yes." :)
-
HERE (http://olympialittletheater.org/list_of_shows.html) is OLT's list of shows for this season. Silent Sky is the second one down.
-
I didn't know who was the director, but I just saw THIS (http://olyarts.org/2017/08/17/olympia-little-theatre-looks-to-the-stars/) article about her and the show!
-
So, I was checking out FB (it's been a while), and a friend posted this article: How A German City Found An Absolutely Genius Way Of Handling Neo-Nazis (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/neo-nazi-walkathon_us_59952cfbe4b0acc593e51ae5).
Take 2 minutes to watch the video and read the article. It's a great idea!
:))
